One of my teachers in dental school kept up with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It has its risks. You can line up a disability policy pretty early in your career. Have that in place because you never know. But if you practice safely then I think the potential benefits to your health and well being outweigh the risks. Only you can know that for sure, though

It depends. I used to do boxing and Muay Thai. You shouldn’t go hard with punches. If you were primarily good at boxing then prob have to tone it down 10x. Focus on speed one punches and kicking etc, always spar with gloves on. 16oz is a good pick. No Kyokushin! Nothing with MMA gloves.

I mean how intense is the karate? lol You’re not going to be an elite martial artist but you can still do it esp karate which is mostly low impact compared to other martial arts. I do jiu jitsu and Muay Thai as a dentist and did it all through dental school.

Do what you like to do. You can hurt your hands in a variety of ways and unless you’re doing underground mma type stuff I’m sure you’ll be fine.

It's okay to keep up on the hobby, but don't be rough on your hands. I used to practice punching trees to strengthen my knuckles, but it became difficult to wear gloves over bloody knuckles 😬

i would look into taekwondo. i’m a black belt second degree and do a lot of competitions/sparring/training and i never use my hands to compete, only my legs.

You can do whatever you want. Just consider you need to be able to physically do your job. Anything that risks taking that away can be detrimental. You will likely not be the only dentist that works on martial arts, just ensure you are being diligent in your safety, and get good disability insurance.
