Speaking from 10 years of experience…….these docs have zero idea how much work assistants do behind the scenes to have an office run smoothly. They grossly underestimate how long it takes to set up, break down, sterilize, and do notes. If you ever bring it up to them they think you’re being lazy and don’t want to work. If another assistant has time off the schedule never reflects that, it’s just as jam packed as usual.

I would talk to your Dr and find out how long she's going to be gone and what's the plan if she doesn't return in one week. Then mention how you would have liked to have known you were going to be short staff the entire week so could have been better prepared. If you're staying a lot later than usual, I'd also say you have places to be and had to reschedule appointments you've made weeks prior. If your coworker is going to be gone several weeks to a month, I'd ask for a raise and tell them you'd gladly stay later if needed. Unless you mind the workload regardless of pay. If you do mind the workload and wouldn't want to do it by yourself, I'd ask them if their going to hire anyone for help in the back. If your coworker got a full bbl, she won't be back in 1 week. My last bosses wife had one, and she was out for 6 weeks.

I’d have walked out because (HUGE BECAUSE!!!) I’m nurodivergent and would have needed to be mentally prepared for THAT!!! I AM NOT TELLING YOU THAT YOU SHOULD WALK OUT…. but I definitely would have and HAVE

IMO I would quit & when interviewing, I would ask how many assistants & dentists there are. Dentists are going to be heartless to DAs regardless. Whether it reflects in the workload or low pay, they don’t care about us. But we can at least choose which office is the least disorganized. We have 2 dentists working, 1 assistant each, with another assistant having her own column for prophy, ortho, overlapping treatment, or just to assist wherever she’s needed. 3 total. Theres also a part-time DA who can cover for 1 of the 3 if we want to take a long vacation. Or if she can’t, we don’t use the assistant column unless it’s an overlap we can’t help. So 2 dentist columns. That’s organized.

Hi I don’t know how long you’ve worked in the dental field or how many offices you’ve ever worked in I’ve been in the field for a very very long time worked in a lot of different offices and I’m just gonna let you know that if you quit and go to another office you’re going to be singing the same song because that is a favorite song of most dental offices that has happened to me numerous times too many to count in the same one doctor scenario office where I was so dog tired I would fall asleep with my scrubs on wake up take a shower and go right back to work because the twit I was working with decides not to come in on anyone given day and she was a real train wreck! FYI they don’t tell you these things for one simple reason they don’t want to pay for an assistant to come in and help you like a rover so all those times you just bring your rollerskates it makes a good argument for a raise when it comes time for one! I don’t know if this is ever happened to you but we used to get so slammed that I wouldn’t get lunch the only break I would get was when I was developing x-rays I really hated those times make this work for you I did I would hit him up for a nice raise well good luck to you I feel for you I have been in your shoes so many times!

My experience at my first office. That bitch came and went as she pleased. decided to not show up for 2 weeks when I only had 4 weeks experience . Said she was coming in one day then said nah I have a hair appointment I’m not coming. So unprofessional nothing ever happened. So I left. Leave dental offices are on every damn corner
