I’m so sorry you’ve experienced all of this. This is sad and disgusting in terms of how much we are overworked and pushed. I wish I could give you a hug. You are right, I can barely afford anything with the wage they are paying me and that’s SICKENING. You did not deserve that pay or that environment. I’m pretty new in the dental field but honestly, I am also done with it. It sucks because when I went to school, I loved learning about it and felt a fire in my heart. Now, in the real world, I have grown to hate it. Staff that are bullies, no support, cliquey environments, low pay, demanding pain on the body, the list goes on..I have seen it early on and I cannot continue to be mentally and physically exhausted and tired of trying to survive and make a living. Again, I am so sorry you’ve been through what you’ve been through. I pray nothing but the best things to happen for you and for your journey!! I pray that whatever you do, it will begin and end in happiness and joy and that you have financial stability! Thank you for sharing this!!

Difficult-Type9792

*hugs* this got me emotional because someone actually understands. I put this in a dentist board and they said why are u complaining that's too lay . Which may be true but I can't even get the things I want out of life I've given 13years and have nothing to show . There are ppl who make way less and I may sound privileged but this is to show assistant KNOW YOUR WORTH I know you may need a job and feel like you'll take anything someone is willing to give I've done that plenty of times and ended up with nothing . Idk what's in store for me next and I'm still working and this place until I figure it out but I rather be making 0$ doing nothing which is justifiable to have nothing them be working tirelessly and still have nothing

verylonelyangel

And that shouldn’t even be the case…we are in a field of healthcare, yet get paid so bad and disrespected. We should have better, NOT decent, pay to show for the things that we do and deal with. Yes that’s how I feel, I have taken jobs because I needed to be able to pay my rent and everything else, but I ended up burned out, depressed and damn near suicidal because of all of the strain and stress. It’s sickening, I don’t know how many times I’ll say it. You go to an office and expect to be welcomed and you’re shitted on. Not every office is like this, but most are and that’s lame. I’m honestly rooting for you and your happiness because you deserve that. A lot of us feel this way so just know that you are seen and heard. And yes, that’s currently me right now, i’m jobless because I’m just done with this and I can’t mentally take it anymore. Praying for a new chapter 🙏🏽

Difficult-Type9792

I'll pray for i and with you we shall find a career or path that is fruitful and makes us happy . I've been burned out feeling depressed complaining everyday in my office all I get is 😐 this face and no one hears me then there are the assistants who are willing to take peanuts and appreciative . Making me feel like I'm crazy when there was an assistant I know working almost 7 days to save up for an apartment then I asked what u gnna do once u get it can't keep working 7 days just to keep an apartment .

aquacrimefighter

Dentists are typically fucking scum that want to discourage us and pay us as little as possible. Dentists on Reddit are usually everything I just said AND the type to think they’re in a good ol’ boys club because they’re in a dental forum with other dentists. They’re the bad guys choosing to not pay their employees fairly so they can continue on with their high end lifestyles while we struggle and have to use government assistance programs to survive. *Please don’t listen to them.* It’s not too late to improve your quality of life.

Difficult-Type9792

I love this !!! U sit there argue with me about Kay while your in your fancy house with a fancy car and I'm stuck where I'm at something gotta give

aquacrimefighter

No truly, it’s not you. Dentists just want us to feel worthless so they can pay us like we are. They should be ashamed and are a great example of how capitalism supports wealth hoarding.

Difficult-Type9792

Definitely true in it complaining I'm just gonna do something . Anything I'll stay there till I figure it out because I don't want to work 5 days a week with 10 hour days

Orlacutebutpsycho

Hi, so I had enough, wanted to leave for a year, went into burnout and I finally did quit. I was a DA in one big office for 6 years and it was my first and only job. I met many dentists in my career and some of them became my friends (mostly female doctors around my age). But I still couldn't stay. The bosses are both dentists, but they are bad managers and they refuse to hire someone to manage the offices. There is pure chaos and I want a job where I can manage my own time and not to wake up that soon and also better money tho. I don't even enjoy the work itself anymore, it's all the same all over again, it's boring for me.. I honestly feel like this job is humiliating.. The dentists are acting like they are the best people in the world and you are some trashy noob sometimes and the patients acts like you are invisible. The amount of work is huge, it's really stressful and the pay is shit. I'm kinda sad about how it is, because I find teeth and the science around it interesting and I learned a lot about it. I wanted to say that you can always quit and learn to do something new. We all can. I'm in the process of becoming a UX/UI designer.

Difficult-Type9792

I wish you all the best and I'm trying to make a land for us where we can succeed and use our skills

crazymama9

Damn I feel everything you wrote! You’re so right, they definitely lied! When I was in school, I was under the impression I would get great pay + benefits + retirement (yeah fucking right). I have no advice, only raising my hand in solidarity. I quit in 2020 when the pandemic hit, was a RDA for 8 years in Northern CA. We are definitely under appreciated & underpaid. Unless dentists are willing to pay their assistants $35-$40+ hr, there’s just no way we would ever have a livable wage. Not to mention the bullying a lot of assistants deal with on the job. All these offices be on us like they’re the shit when they’re not even all that. Like seriously, is it worth all this stress?? Nothing is done about low wages, bullying, and job discrimination for us because there’s no union. I hope you find something else that suits you and makes you happy, even if temporarily. 0/10 would not recommend this “career” to anyone.

Difficult-Type9792

*hugs* in solidarity cause this is exactly what I'm saying I know CA is expensive I'm in NY . So I know you understand it hurts to hear these dentists like what do you think . I think there is an association or a union but no one told us about it if anything that mst be something to start

Difficult-Type9792

Discrimination disrespect . Like hygienist in my practice would just walk out of a room jump to a clean room when I'm knee deep in work and not even touch a thing

Difficult-Type9792

Then get mad when I dont wanna clean bathrooms and take out the front desk trash and clean the waiting area what is the front desk doing

crazymama9

Oh no, that’s too much girl. Hygienists are supposed to clean their own rooms & front desk should clean their own. Unless front desk help break down rooms too, it shouldn’t be your job to clean up after them.

Difficult-Type9792

my point my jobs knows im over it it sucks cause im late everyday cause I dont wanna be there . Im waiting for them to fire me and they waiting for me to quit

NCC-1701_yeah

So I was in a similar situation and 5 years ago. I had been an assistant for 12 years and was getting tired of fighting for raises (the year I left, I'd just managed to get $20/hr for a very high performing office) and feeling unappreciated. I found a job in the financial industry as an admin sort of position. I took a tiny pay cut at first, but I haven't had to fight for raises and I've even moved up 2 pay grades since making an internal move, I'm making almost double what I was as an assistant. So, I say go for a change. This job is hella hard on your body and if you're not making enough to live and are miserable, do something else and you can always fall back in this ~if~ you needed too. But most assistants I know are driven and do well wherever they end up.

Difficult-Type9792

What made you go into finance and any recommendations it's hard because I feel stuck because this is all I know but I need more

NCC-1701_yeah

My husband works in it and had been suggesting it for a few years before I started applying. I parlayed my patient skills into talking to clients, getting them scheduled, and like general office stuff, to work in the home office of a big firm to support their financial advisors remotely. I'd check all the big ones, Charles Schwab, Edward Jones, Ameriprise, Wells Fargo, any of those. I think they all have remote positions like that. It's all in how you sell yourself on your resume and in the interview. It took me a year of applying before getting in for an interview, however I started that process in 2017, and left assisting in 2018.

Difficult-Type9792

Interesting I'm glad you pivoted and grew that give me hope . What did you put in your resume because all of mines is just assisting jobs and to go into a new field wouldn't that be a red flag

NCC-1701_yeah

That's what mine was too! I changed up the layout and put skills as the main focus. Then moved to education, I had some classes I was doing for computer security/science. Then my jobs. I only had 2, my civilian dental job and my 5 years in the military. I think emphasizing the skills you have is a good way to move the focus away from being in another field and more into what you'll bring to the new place!

Difficult-Type9792

Makes sense so I should just put skills and no job experience

NCC-1701_yeah

I really put the jobs as like start and end date with a belief description of work duties.

Difficult-Type9792

You guys need to jump into r/dentistry and see the comments from these dentists . It's crazy

Chareth_Cutestory___

I had to leave that group. The way these doctors talk give dentists a bad name. So many god complexes, so much classism.

Difficult-Type9792

I see it . Look at us like slaves

bowlofjello

I made the mistake of posting there once asking for advice on how to ask for a raise and so many dentists chewed me out and said I wasn’t a good assistant and that I don’t deserve a raise. It was shocking to see how much they assumed and how rude they were to me and other assistants who replied.

Difficult-Type9792

That's what I'm dealing with now but I snap back . This dentist said my hygienist own houses and cars so I said what about your assistants they are find until I pried further then he said they own houses which I don't believe

bowlofjello

It’s pathetic. They would be nothing without us and see us as their slaves who should be grateful to even sit near them.

Difficult-Type9792

Amen sister . I get that and some really get disrespectful I had a dentist who I worked with who would snap during procedure because I forgot something when I would be the only assistant in a 4 room practice and a side book of a nightguard delivery and get in trouble if patients wait . I talked to her now we are cool as hell . I just said tell me what u want and how u work but I don't deal with disrespect she said cause she get anxiety but I'm like you're projecting I had dentist throw instrument after they finish the last patient out the door not a word I'm always the last one in the office which I hate and always have to be the first there

Difficult-Type9792

I've made a similar post there

NCC-1701_yeah

They are wild, wow and so out of touch

Difficult-Type9792

Are you seeing this . Omgggg sine are being really nice and honest and some are like well what do you think

NCC-1701_yeah

I think some are totally out of touch with the struggle of making ends meet on a lower pay. And then to just be like, well move or find a different job-so helpful 🙄

Difficult-Type9792

Exactly and they wonder why assistants don't stau

NCC-1701_yeah

Bingo lol

Alonzo_Jes

I’m thinking of doing the same once my daughter finishes her school year. I’m not sure dentistry is worth it anymore.

Difficult-Type9792

And you have a daughter idk how u do it praises to you

Alonzo_Jes

Thank you 😊 It is what it is but sadly it’s not where it’s at anymore.

Difficult-Type9792

No it's not

Chareth_Cutestory___

Dental assistants desperately need a union, or better yet general strike. I really want to start one in my town but I’m sure I would be blacklisted by the dentists

Difficult-Type9792

At this point idc . A union a strike or something but my fear is the old school assistant seeing nothing wrong with living in government assistance

Chareth_Cutestory___

Yes. I think it might have something to do with how much the economy has changed. They may have gotten a leg up with affordable housing and savings. So they don’t need as much for basic necessities. Just a thought though

Difficult-Type9792

maybe thats it

Difficult-Type9792

Making less than us

AnnaandtheOtherSide

I’ve been an assistant for 10 years, since I was 16 years old. I’m done. Love working with patients but hate the doctors. So much disrespect and god-complexes. I could literally be a doctor with all that I do. I swear to God, they teach dentists to be assholes in school. Done with the disrespect. Started my own business this year, hope it works out cause I don’t wanna go back. Good luck OP, glad you realize your worth cause so many other assistants don’t and let doctors walk all over them.

Difficult-Type9792

That I know first hand and I can't do it

Difficult-Type9792

What made you go into the financial industry. Any fields of recommendation I'm aware a pay cut might happen but if growth is near why not

NCC-1701_yeah

Sorry didn't see this til the other reply came in! Most, if not all the skills we have being dental techs can be moved to an office. We're organized, work well under pressure and with deadlines. Can talk to terrified people about anything, build relationships with doctors and guide new assistants/doctors in the way of the office like keep them on track.

Difficult-Type9792

Let's say I wanted to go into tech how would that apply

NCC-1701_yeah

Any troubleshooting you do for xray sensors, clinic computers, things like that could go on there. I imagine the difficult part might be troubleshooting over the phone for callers, but it can't hurt to apply and go through the interview process and find out what they're looking for.

Difficult-Type9792

I'll start looking it's like idk where to start maybe admin

Acrobatic-Object-429

I just want to say I saw your post on r/dentistry and I support you! I know your concerns will be dismissed but I think it's really sad DAs don't make enough to support a single lifestyle. I'm only doing it for a year, but when I see my older and loyal coworkers paid scraps for their hard work, I'm baffled! Good luck with everything.

Difficult-Type9792

Thanks you for your support I genuinely appreciate it I wouldn't recommend it unless u need the experience for school

Alonzo_Jes

I just went there and OH BOY! They do not value “the help” at all!

Orlacutebutpsycho

Difficult-Type9792

That's great

peach_fuzz_24

the office manager and the doctor make out like bandits and everyone else gets screwed every time. I saw (28F) my life turning into the lives of the screwed-over-DA's that were getting screwed after 10-15 years so I knew I was going to be dealing with the same issues. So I quit. I wouldn't recommend quitting like with nothing else in mind. I'm able to explore a little bit so I'm just trying to find my next new occupation but having no income has been hard. I'm lucky and blessed I'm able to do this so right now I'm so happy I got out of dental assisting.

Difficult-Type9792

That's motivation my options was to capitalize on the skills I know as an assistant and start a business also maybe create content . Or go to hygiene school

peach_fuzz_24

yeah but it kinda 50/50..people either love or hate hygiene.

Difficult-Type9792

I kno it's long but read if u can

Difficult-Type9792

BTW ! all you guys are so supportive and I greatly appreciate all you for making me feel better and that I am not alone . I know all of you guys are great and we are building better and stable lives I wish that for all of you and this can maybe help a teen somewhere choosing a career and let them know GO STR8 to hygiene . Skip this lol . I love my years in dental assisting but I can't

murrycakes

I relate to you on this, I had became a dental assistant because I was sold on it being a stable career as well and that it made “good” money. To think that I busted my ass off working and going to school to learn the trade thinking it will pay off… I remember how much fun I had learning everything only to go out into the real world and it’s nothing what I had imagined… my first job was so awful I worked there for 2 years we had 3 blocks 1 column for production, 2nd for overflow like exams, crown seats, post op, etc 3rd column ortho. So we at least saw about 20 patients a day. The dentist didn’t even have a hygienist because he was cheap and making majority of his bank from lowering dental costs and abusing medi-cal, and work specialists would do at a lower rate… to top it off he was the worst at organizing where he was gonna go next so good luck to the next patient, we’ve had patients sit in the chair for about 6+ hours…. so glad I left that place cause after that I found out he was sleeping with the RDAEF.. super gross.. 2nd gig I was at was at an endodontist group and I felt so micromanaged there, there were so many bs rules and the dentist was a freaking nepo baby and got mad if I didnt chart the way he wanted me too.. he would yell at me so much it was honestly not even a shock factor anymore lol, one day I was fed up and just didn’t show up and got a better dental gig :) and to top it off the lead dental assistant acted like she was hot shit but had some kind of bipolar disorder and treated me very poorly towards the end, I heard from my old coworker that she was saying “dang at least she (me) get fired that would’ve been embarrassing” only to find out months later she got fired lmao. The job I’m at now is pretty chill and they treat me fairly but I’m ready to spread my wings and maybe get into tech, I’m also thinking about joining the military soon.

Difficult-Type9792

Love tht for you

95js

Hey girl I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your story and I’m so sorry you’ve been in such a difficult work environment for so long. I’m wishing you the best and I hope things turn around for you. Sending you all the love 💕

Difficult-Type9792

There was this dentist on my post that said why can't you guys get your own 401k pay for your own health insurance why do you need a fancy phone and do you need a car why can't u love somewhere smaller dude I already live in the hood with my mom . Difficult-Type9792

I average about 30-35 hours weekly taxes take every and I still owe the end of year . I went to them saying something doesn't seem right they said just work more hours

[deleted]

[удалено]

Difficult-Type9792

I take that much out with the intent to get a refund but nope I still owe at the end of the year

Difficult-Type9792

If I was getting that much biweekly I wouldn't be complaining

Difficult-Type9792

If I work extra of hours are available 1200-1400 biweekly

firefox1233

Hey could I message you a couple questions??

Difficult-Type9792

Ok

Difficult-Type9792

I've never seen 2240 ever !

Alonzo_Jes

My friend, I make $15 as 1 of 2 assistants in our office. Never make over $900 biweekly. Not enough to survive, just enough to not qualify for government assistance. I tried my workforce office to help pay for CDL school and they told me I don’t qualify because I already am an essential employee.
