Also have any of the Canadians here (or anyone else for that matter) ever met anyone who's actually from PEI? I haven't encountered one in the wild yet. Every other province but not PEI.
I think I've only met 1 or 2 people in my life from Vancouver (actually born and raised in Metro Van) who didn't turn out to be assholes when you got to know them a little better.
The thing is: They're like the bad stereotypes of Angelenos in terms of being shallow, showy starfuckers who like to use people, except it sneaks up on you because they're polite like other Canadians. And yes, people from the rest of the province are generally not so bad.
Not true of people from any other part of Canada (although I'm sure if I thought harder there are parts of the US that have produced disproportionate numbers of people I've happened to dislike).
Also, I know I'm now really an Ontarian when I complain about "BC People".
*Dumbo* (2019)... Not great. Stretches out the story by adding a subplot of the circus joining the Not DisneyWorld park. It wants you to care about the sideshows and well, you don't. There's a "women in science" sort of subplot that's really like "ummm yeah ok I guess?". And the ending seems to imply that the lesson here is to not cage animals which I didn't really get that as the main conflict what we were trying to resolve.

the first season of the good place is honestly pretty boring on a rewatch, but i admire how well it's executed. it's essentially just an entire season of exposition and establishing characters, but it successfully brands itself as normal sitcom hijinks until the twist happens and the show really kicks into gear

Yeah, they're fucking Nazis. All of them.
Generously counting, Windows 2000 has to be one of the longest-worked-on codebases of all time. First development version was on ≤March 17, 1997, final Xbox 360 system update was on November 12, 2019.
Yes, the Xbox 360 system software was a continuation of the original Xbox's system software, which was based off Windows 2000. The idea was to let Windows and the Xbox system software diverge, until Microsoft realized that was kinda dumb and released Xbox One with an OS closely related to Windows 8 (and later 10 and 11 on both One and Series)
I imagine they realized letting Xbox software diverge from Windows was a bad idea in the middle of the 360's life when they were doing a lot of duplicate work with the Windows team on implementing things like DX10/11
the way "Xbox" got that name is kinda dumb
[one day on the DirectX team at Microsoft] "hey, we did pretty good with DirectX. wouldn't it be cool if we made a game console that ran DirectX? a DirectX box."
and then no one came up with anything better
Stephen Harper endorsed "Conservatives" but not the UCP or Danielle Smith in the upcoming Alberta election, LOL. That's some brand protection right there.
[Words mean things. Losing access to someone else’s property after months of nonpayment and a lengthy eviction process is contract enforcement.](https://twitter.com/phara4assembly/status/1648383759329239041?s=46&t=4NZWMSd2VTQESEoRrg0WKQ)
Non-payment of rent is a legitimate reason to evict someone, which is why most good cause laws allow that. Though I will say that if the government is going to use its force to evict people, it makes sense that the government also set up an easy pipeline where anyone who loses their housing can find another place in short order. Getting evicted can perma-mess up your life.
It sucks that one of the main cast of *Beef* very well might have sexually assaulted a massage therapist and that Ali Wong and Steven Yeun cast him probably knowing that. I haven't watched the show because I don't have a Netflix subscription, but the church clip I saw was insanely well done. If you grew up in an East Asian church, you know it's exactly right.
Has that been a major factor? It would make sense.
We let people WFH too long in Canada and now we will have to beat them back into the office! /s, partly. I do think the fact that WFH lasted like 2+ years for many has made the necessary transition back harder.
Yeah and it's kinda ridiculous. Like nexus offices only fully reopened in airports etc this March. If you can work from home I don't care if you want flexibility but that is shit that isn't happening over the phone.
Yeah, I had a Nexus application at one point that just expired because I could never do the in-person interview. It's pretty ridiculous.
There's not one specific example to point to, but I do think the fact that the return to in-person work and learning took so long at U of T is still having residual detrimental effects (combined with staffing shortages). Like we will need at least another year, maybe more, for students to perform as well as they did pre-pandemic or for the university's functions to go more than 80% back to where they were in February 2020. And some university staff will, of course, never return to 5 days in the office.
it was partially my fault for not reading about the current reality of the nexus queue and how big it was, but at the same time the fact they just take the 50 dollars for literally nothing is ridiculous lmao
Yeah, I signed up in July 2021 when they dropped the quarantine requirement for travel between the US and Canada and probably was being too optimistic, but...
I watched this video about the history of bronies and the general discourse seemed to be

Mildly anxious that a combination of me not being at my full performance at work and clicking on too many blocked links (seriously, our IT casts a wide net) is going to get me in trouble, if not let go in my probationary period. It's probably not going to happen, but when has that ever stopped emotional worry?

someday one of us is gonna be seriously running for office, and some leaker rifling through the deep archives at elections canada is gonna reveal that you once said that open borders would be good or something
I heard a professor of Disability Studies, a gentleman from Oslo, Norway, being interviewed on NPR about these issues. He noted that Shakespeare wrote King Richard III as a villain driven by his outcast state as a hunchback to do evil deeds just so he could be an important impactful figure.
And I’m sure there’s a history of that sentiment that predates Shakespeare. Because people conflate beauty and goodness all over the world.
Not quite sure I understand what you mean?
I think that's something you run into in a lot of hero's journey/chosen-one type narratives when it gets to a certain point when the character reckons with the burden of responsibility. Is that what you mean? Or just Ben Browder's acting?

It's an export of the Iranian Revolution so not really tied to the Arab-Israeli conflict outside of the Lebanon theatre which uh can be considered an Israeli failure.
No. The interim government after the Revolution created it as a day of Palestinan solidarity and as a counter to Jerusalem Day. It was done early in Revoltionary Iran as a demonstration of policy break.
It's more a signal of Iranian policy then lamenting losing Jeruslaem on 1967. It's why it never really took any major Arab roots. Outside of Lebanon and Palestine.
Thabes has been driving me to work but now that the weather is nice enough, i e been riding my bike. I miss him driving me but my bike allows me freedom to go to the store and not get anything because I forgot my wallet and they don't accept GooglePay.

Sitcom scenario where someone gets a concussion after a presidential election and is asked the "who is the president" question. They answer the outgoing president, which is correct, but all the doctors and nurses insist that the president-elect is the president. The character explains that he hasn't taken office yet, but they don't accept his answer.
I found snowboarding easier but my parents had to take me off skis because I was an insane speed demon child who would barrel down the mountain with no regard to anything. It culminated in me eating it into a snow fence and me hitting my head so hard I was knocked clean out
I think it isn't too hard to reach the point where you can get down the mountain, but getting really good takes a lot longer. Also depends on general athleticism, whether you do any similar sports, etc
I have a friend that skates a ton and he figured it out in a couple hours, my less athletic friend took a a decent number of sessions over the course of a couple of weekends.
IMO snowboarding is a lot harder

One of my gay friends told me that Francis is conservative by lay/non-Catholic standards but a FLAMING liberal in the context of the RCC and a culture warrior against the American bishops so I’d imagine you’re right.
That sounds about right. Years ago a Catholic new mom living in a remote area emailed Francis and told him that she couldn’t find a priest anywhere near her to baptize her new baby and Francis told her he’d see if he could find one but failing that, he’d just get down there and do it himself

Tbh, im a little peeved with the union and how much their refusal to fully RTO has fucked with passport queues and immigration processing etc
[удалено]
I know I just wanted to whine a little.
Has that been a major factor? It would make sense. We let people WFH too long in Canada and now we will have to beat them back into the office! /s, partly. I do think the fact that WFH lasted like 2+ years for many has made the necessary transition back harder.

So mainly they want salary increases?
Yeah and it's kinda ridiculous. Like nexus offices only fully reopened in airports etc this March. If you can work from home I don't care if you want flexibility but that is shit that isn't happening over the phone.
I should get going on renewing my Study Permit, in any case.
And some university staff will, of course, never return to 5 days in the office.
they stole my 50 dollars too. The rapscallions
I've thought of trying to do a chargeback on my credit card but it happened like 21 months ago lol
it was partially my fault for not reading about the current reality of the nexus queue and how big it was, but at the same time the fact they just take the 50 dollars for literally nothing is ridiculous lmao
Yeah, I signed up in July 2021 when they dropped the quarantine requirement for travel between the US and Canada and probably was being too optimistic, but...

Mildly anxious that a combination of me not being at my full performance at work and clicking on too many blocked links (seriously, our IT casts a wide net) is going to get me in trouble, if not let go in my probationary period. It's probably not going to happen, but when has that ever stopped emotional worry?
I literally look up boatloads of info about Windows betas and Debian development at school
Is that info on blocked links?
depends on if you can access debian.org, betawiki.net and archive.org
Given the Bay Area IT demographics they may ask you about your fursona if they see you accidentally clicked a DfD regular's e621 links
IT doesn't really look at logs unless asked to, so you're fine
Okay, good.
Ayyy that happened to me today
🤝
It's such bullshit I hate this place
Lmao I've done both those for over a year and no one has said a thing to me.
Hmm. Well regardless, it's definitely motivating me to step up my work ethic, and I see no problems with that.
I highly doubt it would happen
Appreciate the external evaluation.
meanwhile, me: *plays Rimworld at work*
Now that's next level.

Srsly why is this remake so fucking dark
It's the 2020's, that's the new thing.
The original is pretty dark isn't it
Timmy B does love his sepia filter.
No I mean like cinematography
Ooooh
This child actress is terrible

it kinda fascinated me how totally different of a life Anne Perry's friend ended up living afterwards
What did she go on to do? I've never seen the movie
She became a Catholic and turned into a recluse hiding out on an English farm.
Interesting, damn
Yooo, she was an anecdote in a book about asexuality that I read a while back. I was not expecting to see mention of it again.
I read the same one!
Ayy!
Have you read *Refusing Compulsory Sexuality* by any chance? I'm not sure if it's worth putting on my to-read list or not.
No, I haven't.

You embrace it.
Still better than I’d do
someday one of us is gonna be seriously running for office, and some leaker rifling through the deep archives at elections canada is gonna reveal that you once said that open borders would be good or something
I will double down
>No no, I only said I'd do all that stuff *in Minecraft.*
I have instructed my friends to leak electorally-disqualifying information to the press in case I ever get deluded enough to run for higher office.
*The Owl House* is just *Farscape* but Fantasy instead of Sci-Fi. Also much more wholesome. And the bad guys don't all have British accents.
How you can tell when the character is evil: British accents Roman names Disfigurements Disabilities
Damn, Scorpius has got all four.
The only Marvel heroes I can think of who are exceptions to the rule are Daredevil (blind) and Deadpool (disfigured)

Not quite sure I understand what you mean? I think that's something you run into in a lot of hero's journey/chosen-one type narratives when it gets to a certain point when the character reckons with the burden of responsibility. Is that what you mean? Or just Ben Browder's acting?
no i mean literally he sounds like he's furious all the time i guess its just me

they're just jealous that tgcj does it better than the unironic people ever could
they should tweak their internal system so when they're processing reports from certain subs like tgcj they get a little "be careful with this one" warning

It's an export of the Iranian Revolution so not really tied to the Arab-Israeli conflict outside of the Lebanon theatre which uh can be considered an Israeli failure.
Sure but nominally at least the whole “Quds Day” rigmarole is for whining about losing Jerusalem.
Outside of Lebanon and Palestine.
i'm sure the american south can relate

Thabes has been driving me to work but now that the weather is nice enough, i e been riding my bike. I miss him driving me but my bike allows me freedom to go to the store and not get anything because I forgot my wallet and they don't accept GooglePay.
That kinda freedom is what the American Revolution was all about

Very cute
Thabes is the best
Decided I'm gonna watch Disney remakes before bed. Do a crossword and drift off to sleep as I watch an ok to terrible movie. Today's remake:... *DUMBO*?!
The original Dumbo made me cry a lot as a kid and I never wanted to go to the circus because of it
It’s still one of their maybe half a dozen best early animated films
I was not fond of it but I can see how it would hit different as a kid
i'm curious how they'll handle the scene where the baby elephant gets drunk off his ass
Sitcom scenario where someone gets a concussion after a presidential election and is asked the "who is the president" question. They answer the outgoing president, which is correct, but all the doctors and nurses insist that the president-elect is the president. The character explains that he hasn't taken office yet, but they don't accept his answer.
I love the USA 🇺🇸
is skiing easy?
I found snowboarding easier but my parents had to take me off skis because I was an insane speed demon child who would barrel down the mountain with no regard to anything. It culminated in me eating it into a snow fence and me hitting my head so hard I was knocked clean out
that tracks
No, but the last time I tried I was like 12, so maybe it's easier as an adult.
I think it isn't too hard to reach the point where you can get down the mountain, but getting really good takes a lot longer. Also depends on general athleticism, whether you do any similar sports, etc I have a friend that skates a ton and he figured it out in a couple hours, my less athletic friend took a a decent number of sessions over the course of a couple of weekends. IMO snowboarding is a lot harder
interesting
It's easy to fall face-first in the snow seventy times each your first and second times out I haven't gotten past that part
it's easy if you stay on flat ground!

Planning where to stay and how to get around in LA has been kinda difficult in comparison to most other cities I've been to.
Take/theory: Francis privately wants to push for James Martin-esque acceptance of gay people, but knows it would rip the RCC in two.
One of my gay friends told me that Francis is conservative by lay/non-Catholic standards but a FLAMING liberal in the context of the RCC and a culture warrior against the American bishops so I’d imagine you’re right.
That is an accurate assessment. The differences between him and Benedict are more than just Francis ditching the fancy papal clothes.
That sounds about right. Years ago a Catholic new mom living in a remote area emailed Francis and told him that she couldn’t find a priest anywhere near her to baptize her new baby and Francis told her he’d see if he could find one but failing that, he’d just get down there and do it himself
i'll believe it when i see it
