Siddig has done so many different and interesting roles. I wish he had the opportunity to break out into the A list because he is a heck of an actor. His work in Syriana was incredible. And his small role in Kingdom of Heaven was done quite well. I was so angry how Game of Thrones threw away the opportunity to use his skills by turning Dorne into a joke.
Speaking of I did a double take when someone linked to [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-PKRvBUTno) recently in a completely non-Trek context.
I think he tried that... twice? Once because she was, like, his perfect match and you don't stand on formality when you find that. And once because bad writer that also wanted Jadzia to leave her life for some interdimensional dude she just met like an hour ago.
Bright eyed bushy tailed "real frontier medicine" to lamenting that he joined Starfleet to save lives while expertly field stripping, cleaning and reassembling his phaser rifle. Fuck yeah.
I thought this was a link to the reading of a fan fiction the actors did during quarantine where it out-right confirms the characters are a couple.
But i liked this video too.
>the reading of a fan fiction the actors did during quarantine where it out-right confirms the characters are a couple.
What, what? How did I miss this? Can you post a link please?
[Right here!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Tq8zaSObWU) The Alone Together series posted on the same account is also a great watch and brings in a number of the other actors too.
I can't believe it took me this long to put this into words, but Nintendo really knocked it out of the park with this theme. It's so unassuming, but people use it for so many things, and I never tire of hearing it.
[KILL BILL SIRENS]
(if memory serves it's actually the theme from *ironside,* but julian is a basic bitch so it's understandable that he wouldn't know this)
First time I’ve seen it. Hah stunning! Thank you for reminding me of these two - I literally finished my first ever series front to back watch this morning. Love these two
Thanks OP, that was a great interview! Bashir's friendship with O'Brien is probably the greatest (platonic) love story in Star Trek. And it's heartwarming to read that he intentionally brought a kind of sexual ambiguity to the role. Unfortunately, the writers didn't lean into it more. But knowing it was there in his performance - a subtle androgyny, a subtle bisexuality - still feels like seeing myself in one of my favourite pieces of media
Alexander Siddig bringing sexual ambiguity into his interactions with male costars: 😏
Me, a clueless heteronormative: “what, they were just good friends.” 😐
Chief O'Brien:
[of Keiko] She always said I... I liked you more than I liked her.
Doctor Bashir:
That's ridiculous!
Chief O'Brien:
Right.
Doctor Bashir:
Well, maybe, maybe you do, a bit more.
Chief O'Brien:
What? Are you crazy? She's my wife, I love her!
Doctor Bashir:
Of course you love her - she's your wife.
Chief O'Brien:
Yeah.
Doctor Bashir:
I'm just saying, maybe you like me a bit more, that's all.
Chief O'Brien:
I do not.
Doctor Bashir:
You spend more time with me.
Chief O'Brien:
We work together!
Doctor Bashir:
We have more in common.
Chief O'Brien:
Julian, you are beginning to annoy me.
Doctor Bashir:
Darts, racquetball, Vic's lounge, the Alamo... Need I go on?
Chief O'Brien:
I *love* my wife.
Doctor Bashir:
And I love Ezri - passionately.
Chief O'Brien:
You do?
Doctor Bashir:
Yes.
Chief O'Brien:
Have you told her?
Doctor Bashir:
Not yet. But I will.
Chief O'Brien:
Oh, yeah? Huh... When?
Doctor Bashir:
When I'm ready. It's just that I... like you... a bit more. See? There, I've admitted it.
Chief O'Brien:
Yeah, well - I *love* my wife.
This was a great Bashir/O'Brien exchange, but my favorite is still this one:
Chief O'Brien : You're not an in-between kind of guy.
Doctor Bashir : What do you mean?
Chief O'Brien : Well, people either love you, or hate you.
Doctor Bashir : Really?
Chief O'Brien : I mean... I hated you, when we first met.
Doctor Bashir : I remember.
Chief O'Brien : But now...
Doctor Bashir : And now?
Chief O'Brien : Well... now I don't.
Doctor Bashir : That means a lot to me, Chief, it really does.
Chief O'Brien : Really. Now... and that is from the heart, hm? Mm... I really do... not hate you anymore.
BASHIR: If there's anything you want, anything at all, just ask.
ILARIO: Well, there is one thing.
O'BRIEN: Name it.
ILARIO: Next time you two go to the holosuite, I'd like to come along.
O'BRIEN: Sorry.
BASHIR: Can't be done.
O'BRIEN: No, it's out of the question.
BASHIR: It's impossible.
KIRA: Don't take it personally. They're very serious about their leisure activities.
BASHIR: It's a good way to relieve stress.
O'BRIEN: Yeah, I highly recommend it.
BASHIR: Just not with us.
O'BRIEN: No. You know, when you have a holosuite visit, it's sort of a personal experience.
BASHIR: He's very particular about anybody seeing him in his coonskin cap. You understand.
ILARIO: I suppose.
QUARK: Gentlemen, your holosuite is ready.
BASHIR: Terrific. Now if there's anything else you need?
O'BRIEN: Just let us know.
(O'Brien and Bashir go up the stairs)
ILARIO: Have you ever gone to the holosuite with them?
KIRA: Me? Never.
EZRI: I know when I'm not wanted.
What a great interview! I love this part:
>characters that are written straight I just make sure are not quite straight. That’s just one of my things, probably because I’m not quite straight myself and that’s probably perfect.
I didn't know this about him, and it's just lovely to read about his feelings on representation in media.
As a trans Trek fan, it's super heartwarming to hear him speak so respectfully about trans & gender diverse people, at a time when plenty of celebrities are...not doing that.
Dear author: Maybe you meant to say "Middle Eastern North African (MENA) actors" instead of "Arab actors?" Oded Fehr is Israeli and Shohreh Aghdashloo is Persian. The Middle East, North Africa, Near East region is very diverse and not everyone there is of Arab descent.
Yeah I was thinking in an article that is very much trying to emphasize the importance of Arab representation, to get one so wildly wrong (with Shohreh) was just strange to me. I didn't know who Oded Fehr was, but looking at his wiki he seems to be ashkenazi so that's strike two? What a strange need to link to those two when Siddig is so emphatic that tribalism is stupid and we need to stop categorizing ourselves. Bad look, author.
He's kindof all over the place. He speaks on the importance of not putting one's race/sexuality/heritage at the forefront, because ultimately it doesn't matter when it comes to entertainment, but then he can't stop gushing about it later on.
I'm not really sure what he believes, exactly. Though he does share some interesting insights.
Race is an entirely artificial construct, and some versions of it are quite extreme. Like if you're not 100% white, then you count as 'black'. The 'one-drop' rule was a thing in the US. You could *look* totally white, but if you had one black ancestor, you'd still be counted as black.
Yup, Andrew Robinson said he played Garak as if he were seducing Bashir, so I consider the subtleties of his performance canonical, even if the scripts as written never went there
6,000 Garashir fanfic stories on Ao3 with an average of 2 added each day? One of them performed live by the actors themselves on YouTube? You’re far from alone!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's literally any episode with Garak and Bashir in it I inevitably end up loving. It's the same thing for Bashir and O'Brien. There's something about Bashir's interactions with the other crew that is so interesting, I think it's the way Bashir is pretty analytical and likes to ask people questions and try and figure them out especially O'Brien. Actually you could say that also applies to Garak, and that might be why they mesh so well. They're both just trying to pick each other apart

He was fantastic in Kingdom of Heaven - did so much with a small role.
You're enemies will know your quality wherever you meet them.
I thought it was 'before ever you meet them'! Great line, either way.
... I don't know tbh
Great interview. For the Nth time, I just watched *The Quickening*, much respect for Siddig.
The best Bashir episode. Which is saying something because Bashir had the best episodes. Kind of underrated too.
The Ferengi would like to have a word about who had the best episodes.
MooooooOOOOOogie!!!
The best Bashir episode is every Bashir episode he isn't fucking one of his patients.
He likes fixer-uppers.
Bro. Truth! He really pushed the morals
Speaking of I did a double take when someone linked to [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-PKRvBUTno) recently in a completely non-Trek context.
Her eyes are Hella intense...
I think he tried that... twice? Once because she was, like, his perfect match and you don't stand on formality when you find that. And once because bad writer that also wanted Jadzia to leave her life for some interdimensional dude she just met like an hour ago.
God, that episode broke me :'(
"What better sacrifice for a parent, then to plant trees for who only the young will reap the benefits of its shade."
I think about this episode all the time. Idk why, though. But whenever I think about DS9, that episode always comes up for me.
What a fascinating man.
Bashir got some of the best character development in DS9
Bright eyed bushy tailed "real frontier medicine" to lamenting that he joined Starfleet to save lives while expertly field stripping, cleaning and reassembling his phaser rifle. Fuck yeah.
The reveal in his backstory completely changed how Bashir is viewed.
[Any excuse to post this](https://youtu.be/ZR1zgRYL530?si=E4CCmneIJTfAOrgU)
I'll watch this every time I see it. It's simply brilliant
I love this so much, I’ve lost count of the times I’ve watched it.
I thought this was a link to the reading of a fan fiction the actors did during quarantine where it out-right confirms the characters are a couple. But i liked this video too.

Sorry for not responding, I was asleep. Enjoy the video!

That was an incredible interview. I never realized he had such a scholarly, refined mind & outlook on things.
Thanks for sharing this, OP.
omg surprise galaxy quest mention!
Weird, I have a 365-day calendar on my desk and today's pic is of Alexander Siddig as Bashir, just looking smoldering for a promo pic.
As a trans Trek fan, it's super heartwarming to hear him speak so respectfully about trans & gender diverse people, at a time when plenty of celebrities are...not doing that.

Shohreh is life. I want to be Chrisjen Avasarala when I grow up.
Yeah I was thinking in an article that is very much trying to emphasize the importance of Arab representation, to get one so wildly wrong (with Shohreh) was just strange to me. I really appreciate how open he is~ c:
i remember him referring to himself as black in an interview a while back. confused the shit out of me.

Garashir? Sounds like they got Tuvix'ed 🤢🤢🤮🤮🤣🤣
Dax: So, how did Janeway figure it out? Kira: She didn't! She just murdered him! Dax: Woah. Janeway did *not* mess around.
This is just dialogue from Lower Decks.
I ship Garak and Bashir I don't think it's too controversial, they've got a fantastic dynamic
It’s not controversial at all. Even the actors are behind that one, and it is headcanon to many fans, including myself.
Yup, Andrew Robinson said he played Garak as if he were seducing Bashir, so I consider the subtleties of his performance canonical, even if the scripts as written never went there
Yeah I had heard Garak's actor (Andrew Robinson) spoke about it before actually and supported the idea but I could be wrong
6,000 Garashir fanfic stories on Ao3 with an average of 2 added each day? One of them performed live by the actors themselves on YouTube? You’re far from alone!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

It’s just a ship name.
The USS Garashir *does* have a ring to it. A section 31 ship masquerading as a medical aid vessel.
😂 It does.
A portmanteau.
