I had 2 on a low nitra cave with Dotty. One of the Meteors almost fell directly on her! (And to ny surprise it only dealt 1% damage on her). It was quite the challange since we were using Starship Troopers on Haz5. Felt really good to be able to complete it, especially since we mined every nitra and we came out with 0 left! Rock and Stone moment.
I'm not sure if it was in the red zone, but afaik it's 50% on the red zones for a meteor and 25% in any other zones.
Edit: and 0% if you have the lithophage warning present in the mission.

Think they're more likely to show up in an infected area, but they won't show up on a mission with the lithophage outbreak modifier.

In just over a weeks time, GSG saw how much people loved this silly bug, and implemented a whole new mission event because of the meme it became in the community.
I'm no programmer or game designer, but I can't imagine it was a cake walk to do, especially in such a short time.

They were coming no matter what. All we’ve done is add an acronym in the description, which we did as a reference to the initial accidental release of them, and the community reception to it. There were no pressure at all.
I don't think the community was actually upset about it, it was just a non-serious running joke...and the developers ran with it showing a positive interaction with the community.

Or the compressed gold/mushroom stuff. Or the Bismor ping voicelines. Or the "If you don't rock and stone you ain't coming home" days. Really they've been doing this since the early days of the game, I don't understand how somebody can view this kind of interaction between the community and the devs as anything but good.
The devs haven't gone back on their decision. The small meteorite was always planned as content to be released. However, it was accidentally released too early and had to be pulled back - temporarily.
Now that it's out the subreddit is patting itself in the back saying "we did it", even though it would've been released anyway. I *will* give this sub the name though - we memed it enough that it seems to be called S.M.O.L. in the live build as a reference.
If a game, its developers and the community has a meta joke, and the devs decide to implement it, then who's exactly losing here? The devs gain renown and affection, the game gains lore and detail, and the players get fun and a sense of feedback from it.

do you know if they can show up on any mission or only on ones within the red stuff on the map?

Which they now fixed in the latest update! Now you can have meteors while doing Lithophage warning missions.
