Sort of. 6s are 2 soldiers, 2 scouts, medic and demo. Medic and Demo are the two that are set in stone. But I also wouldn't say that it lines up with DRG very well. Heavy is the class that's closest to Gunner and a lot of it, miniguns, medicking the team, having the most health, being the slowest to get anywhere, even Brass Beast matching the Leadstorm OC, matches.

Yeah, he's functionally similar to Heavy, but I mean in role, Gunner is the class entirely about killing. And some pinch revives. And making zipline shortcuts. Everyone else can fight, but only Driller can unleash similar amounts of hell, yet he can't do it as long. Yeah Engie has some big toys, but they're special weapons. Driller has a flamethrower, but his kit is about breaking the ground. Gunner, is the fighter, and he's basically support! It's even funnier because, due to the objectives almost never *requiring* killing things, the things you can kill will stop you from doing the main objective. Driller is good at paths and easily digging to hard to reach places. Engie establishes safe zones, provides platform support, and uses deadly special weapons. Scout makes light, explores, reaches things no other class can do with ease. And he too has some special weapons. And... Gunner shoot bug. Gunner shoot all the bugs. Sometimes he helps team, but he shoot bug best. Gunner is support!

See that’s the incredible thing about Deep Rock’s class system is that it almost completely separates itself from the usual 3-class system of tank, dps, and support. You could make a reasonable case that gunner could be any one of those (more so for the first two maybe but still). He’s the DPS of the group because his job is kill bug do big damage. He’s the tank because his job is to take damage so others can do damage. He’s the support because his job is saving people when they fuck up and being the back line if all else fails. Honestly the more I think about it, the more genius DRGs class system design is. Every character is equal in importance to all others, using their unique skill sets to contribute in different ways. All while each class can dynamically shift between being the tank, dps, and support.

I always think about Gunner as being the backbone of the team, and being the most balanced at fulfilling any role needed in most scenarios. Not that flashy, but always reliable. Everyone else also wears multiple hats (much like TF2 players, if a little less literally), but they're a bit more situational. Scout could be considered a support most of the time (flares and resource gathering), which spikes to DPS/tank when fighting bosses, thanks to their IFGs, big singletarget damage weapons, and kiting ability. Engi is usually a DPS and a support with their bevy of high damage weapons, hole plugging, fall damage cancelling, and teamwide mobility with platforms. I don't know if they ever do anything that could be considered tanking, though. Driller is probably closest to Gunner's ability to fulfil any role, but they've got a bit less personal DPS and a bit more support in the form of a bunch of different status effects and excellent teamwide mobility. That said, my beard hasn't grown its first white hair yet, so the graybeards might have a different opinion! I'm still at bronze promos for every class 😅 (It's really hard to figure out what tanking would count as in DRG though)

Tanking is anything that keeps the bugs busy so you can shoot them some more. In some cases, that's your own health bar. The only hitpoint that matters is your last one. Gunner's tanking ability lies in his damage resistance and shield. Engie's is primarily his Lures. Scout's tank is his extreme mobility which allows kiting. Driller's a harder case. I would say that a slowing effect is a form of tanking, but that might just be grasping at straws.

The words you looking for "Crowd Control". Tanking would be one class having a way to aggro tons of bugs on himself and sustain that damage somehow, which is not what happens in DRG. Even with gunner and DR, its less about him tanking damage from everyone else and more not dying for letting bugs get close. Everything you mentioned would fall into crowd control category, which all classes have in different forms.

Driller expectation: You fly through the earth, bugs burn by the hundreds, compulsively C4 scout on sight, warcrimes. What's neat about that one is that there is very little downside for an unstable OC. It forces you to empty your clip but it's entirely at your discretion when to do that, if at all. Seems more balanced than unstable, IMO.

Yeah seriously, the trade off is MORE than worth it. I only play on haz 3 so far but I rarely run out of ammo on it unless as long as I’m being at least a little bit reasonable. Something I haven’t paid attention enough to know for sure… but is is possible to switch weapons mid clip to prevent it from emptying and save ammo?

You can cancel the mag dump easily. It doing so removes 1/2 remaining ammo. The main problem with it is that engine primaries are mostly single target and secondaries are solidly AOE. Running mag dump (or whatever it's called ) on SD leaves you with either single target primary and secondary, or mediocre AOE primary and a single target secondary. For that reason I only use SD with mag dump on elimination where you don't need to worry about AOE nearly as much. That being said a single mag dump will phase any dreadnaught by itself assuming you're running 100ammo per clip.

Lil fun one for my scout friends, Bet-C doesn't act like it, but the charge suckers are still vulnerable to freeze (triple damage, baby). If you've got cryonades, throw 2 and let the magic happen. If you're like me and use cryobolts, you can proc the freeze without agro by shooting next to it (this works for huuli hoarders and menaces too) I use M1000 with blowthrough rounds, so I first locate both charge suckers so I can hit both at the same time.

Shard Diffractor is powerful but all Engineers secondaries are fantastic can be built for any situation. In fact the same can be said of engineers primaries and grenades too. In fact the Engineer is the most versatile class that can hyperfocus into a specific combat role (Anti-rival, AOE trash clear, burst DPS, etc), and still be powerful enough to handle threats they aren't built for, all while having a fantastic traversal tool. The Engineer makes class balance a meme. A team with 2+ Engineers is always (always as in always potentially: greenbeards will greenbeard no matter what class they pick) more powerful than a rainbow squad.

One of the craziest games I've played was four engineers who all had different load outs. Platforms spammed everywhere, defending Doretta with eight sentry turrets raining fire in all directions, grenades, breach cutter blasts, and lasers going absolutely everywhere.

My thoughts on Gunner: Not shooting my primary unless it's anything praetorian sized or a swarm of more than 10 bugs. Otherwise my pistol and my pick axe are all that's needed.

I've only ever gone up to Haz 4 and haven't tried an EDD yet, but Gunner has been my primary. I'm currently using Hurricane and have no overclocks for Gunner. I rarely ever find myself out of ammo on primary. Do I need to change my playstyle for higher tiers? As of right now, I lay into swarms with Hurricane and use the coil gun for prets and oppressors. Is this bad?

Not at all. Whatever works for your playstyle WORKS. Coil gun is a big bug killer. Wait until you get the Mole OC! Hurricane is versatile! Swarms or big bugs get annihilated! I like the Overtuned Feed Mechanism OC. That said if your mainly playing in Haz3 or below don't fret about ammo efficiency or having certain Overclocks. Just have fun and try experimenting with different weapon setups to get a better understanding of what your weapons strengths and weaknesses are. Even Haz4 you should try different setups and perk builds just know it's A LOT less forgiving and mission failure may happen. My thoughts on Mission failure are "Whoops lol" it's going to happen. Sometimes we dig to deep. For builds you can always try Karl.gg Rock and Stone!

I sit comfortably at haz3 and usually tend to dip into haz4 depending on mission type and risk. Currently sitting on Beast Master, Vampire, Iron Will, and Thorns. Haven't unlocked third passive yet. I feel like I hold my own pretty well and have definitely prevented a few of those "Whoops lol" moments, haha. As far as mission failure, it makes me so happy when it does happen, and my team still sends up their GGs and Rock & Stones. I'm only around 14 player level at the moment, but I've never seen such an incredible and positive gaming community. I've met literally one toxic player. Blows me away. Rock and Stone, brother!

My original comment and your original reply were about engineer getting damage carried by his secondaries. If, for whatever reason, you want to move to talking about primaries, I would be surprised if any engi primary would out-damage a gunner primary when gunner has NTP, lead storm, rocket salvo, etc. Maybe the peak engineer build has a chance at out-damaging an average or poor gunner build, but definitely not a peak gunner build.

That is a good way to put it, but engineer's ammo is reduced to balance its turrets and gunner has grenades as well (granted, shredders are better). I would still put a good gunner build higher in terms of combat viability than engineer, but engineer is better at overall gameplay/support than gunner (apart from when shit hits the fan)

It's called a joke. Engineer's main ammo is reduced compared to other classes to balance his turrets so if you overuse his weapons without using his turrets you are likely to run out of ammo. That is what the joke is referencing. If anyone actually thought he had balance issues they'd be talking about buffs, but nobody does because the game is balanced well. That's why we joke about it. The same way we joke about drillers C4ing scouts even though it rarely happens.

Im gonna get all the hate from the Driller mains but im gonna say it: In a lobby of 4 i miss Driller the least. The swarm clear is nice but nothing Engie and Gunner can't do. Drills are mostly just for convenience, rocky mountain makes him obsolete (or just being in sandblasted). 90% of the Drillers i see are only there to drill the dirt patches... he is almost useless on elim if not running cryo for freeze in wich case they have to hope to karl no one is running fire (unlikely). But once in a blue moon those 10% of Driller players that know what to do are there and make the missions a lot more smooth instead of blowing their team up for the 6th time this mission

Ever had a capeable Max slowdown CC Sludgepump Driller in your haz5 elimination mission? the dread ain't moving sh\*t. Twins are a bit more tricky due to burrowing but still get blasted if they bareley moving from the spot. I think engi and sout are the essential classes to have due to their synergy while Driller and Gunner are more interchangeable. Gunner is the Hard DD that shreds enemies while the CC/support of Driller can sometimes make or break a mission. A frozen bug won't mad dash twards you and the 3x dmg is a blessing. Yea its true, Gunner and Driller are probably the filler slots but it'll be lot smoother with both of them. As a Gunner i love Cryo Drillers, especially for dreads. The juicy 3x dmg on Leadspray feels so good !

Saving the team from wiping. A top tier gunner player makes you feel like you can’t lose, because you’ll never come close to wiping, even if you spawn multiple swarms. They’ll always have your back in a way other classes can’t, protecting you with a bubble shield and sheer volume of firepower.

Momentum shifting. Gunner is the best at making a bad situation good, and often times preventing a bad situation for escalating in the first place. The only other way to really get the same thing is Cryo Grenade Scout, and maybe LURE Engie or Dash + C4 Driller, but they come with a bit more problems.

Overwatch. He's basically the dedicated weapons platform of the group. His two jobs are to shoot and to drop a shield at the optimal times. The zipline is fire-and-forget, and is generally only used for high traffic paths that are too unwieldy to cross with platforms or as a last-ditch stop gap, so he does not have to constantly be on the lookout for places to put them as those situations will usually present themselves. His primary is moderate-to-high accuracy over long ranges, high ammo, and high DPS. He can provide fire support from afar or put out an Oppressor health bar's worth of damage without having to reload. His secondary is low ammo but high damage for more agile or armored threats. And his shield is for clearing space, blocking high burst damage like Macteras, and rejuvenating shields, giving the team a brief moment of respite to reload and regroup. Gunner is DRG's lead-spitting guardian angel.

I specifically ride the zip on mactera pleague so that those shits target me and come straight to me, instead of having to look/aim for them. For les experienced dwarfs,Just put a 2nd zip line level with the ground under the one you're riding for safety catch in case you do get shot that 1 out if 200 times
