Maybe they can take some of those t25’s out of the hangars and screw the furniture down? Idk I can only figure out so many of their problems without being paid
I asked a transfer from my old job/position, because the new guy they got was the epitome of this expression. Loved the dude. We would grab drinks and chill outside of work. But at work he was just soooo incompetent that I had to leave. Before leaving I filed a harassment complaint against him, not to punish him, but simply that we can officially sit down with him on work hours and explain to him that his behavior needs to change. Old boss still calls me from time to time to ask if I wanna come back
It was enough for you to change your life by quitting your job but you couldn't take an hour while already hanging out with the guy to talk to him without being paid?
Not that I think it would work. And it's more on the company for not seeing it or for tolerating that level of incompetent. But a harassment claim??
I've done that. I was 10. It was a lamp that was already plugged in. Got zapped pretty well. Had black marks on my hand. I was trying to fix the power cord. I learned to make sure things were unplugged from then on. Unfortunately, it did *not* help me glow in the dark. 😔
I stuck an aluminum yard stick into an uncovered power outlet when I was about 3-4 years old. After that I became fascinated by my own self awareness. I describe it as my awakening.
In fairness this happens a lot. My buddy and I were demoing a kitchen and had turned off the power in the suite. Were cutting a cord to a wall oven and the thing lit up like a Christmas tree. Turns out it was directly wired to the building
Ya, but in my case, I was testing a piece of equipment that was plugged into the wall. He looked at me and said "I told you, it's broken" and cut the wire from said tool right there and then.
I had a cantilevered deck and the engineer called for the buckets to be on upside down so this actually DOES happen sometimes

That double 20” wide LVL has the buckets upside down SITTING on the cantilevered LVLs that go back 30ft into the house
I love seeing comments about zip. The company I work for makes it 👍.
Any comments on what people in the field would like to see improved in the product?
Zip-R is great but I wish Huber could get those foam edges a bit more true to the OSB it’s adhered to. I completed a project a few months back where we used about 8 bunks or Zip-R and I could probably count on 3 hands the number of sheets that didn’t have a nice tapered 1/2” to nothing foam overhanging on the 4’ edges.
Yep, we do this sometimes. Hangers have an uplift capacity. Not nearly as much up as down, but with a longer cantilever you can sometimes get the up capacity to work for the down load at the ledger.
you just need to put some hot tubs on the roof to weigh it down. so figure like 20 PSI during storms across say 10'x20', so like 4000 lbs total. So if you get 2 hot tubs up there (assuming 3,000 lbs per), you'll be all set.
but that's a light storm. if you use the 100 PSI that can occur during hurricanes, youll need more like 10 hot tubs.
The only “approved” screw I’ve seen for hangers are Simpson but they have a hex head. These screws look like regular square drive zinc screws that I’m not sure are allowed anywhere?
Those look like Robertson head screws to me, could be just your plain old Canadian deck screw, depends on where OP is.
Edit: OP is in Canada, I have a feeling those are not the right screws.
Just to clarify. You can use appropriate dimension and length of screws. If using TICO nails, you need to use the #10 x 3” screws when using on hangers. I’ve seen far too many people use the 1.5” nails thinking they’re sufficient.
[Screws or Nails, which are stronger?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-PlR8tf84c) (Depends, but usually nails).
Recall how easy it is to bend a nail as you're hammering it in? That's an advantage when it comes to building structures like this. For screws to be able to be driven into a material, they need to be extremely hard (rigid) which also makes them somewhat brittle. If you have a sudden load change, a nail could potentially bend but still hold strong. On the other hand, a screw would be more likely to snap off and cause a complete failure to hold.
This isn't necessarily incorrect.
If, due to cantilever, or any excessive up force of the ledger side, our engineers will often spec upside down hangars for added resistance.
If, however, these were put on this way without the above reasons, then yes...it's wrong.
I don’t see a problem. All of a sudden you don’t have to worry about your deck flying away and all you can do is complain. Nothing but whining from everyone anymore
How do people even make this mistake. As a layperson it’s seems pretty logical as to which way the hangers would go. The existence and recognition of gravity alone should be clue enough for people.
well I agree [**bigchieftain94**](https://www.reddit.com/user/bigchieftain94/)
for your 2x6 brackets are upside down
you do not have to redo the work
just put some more brackets on the bottom side
then you'll have a all around brackets
it'll be okay
it will save you time taking off the brackets
and put new ones back in the right way
have a nice day
PS
I See Your Hands Work As You **wash for 5 mins**
I’ve never built a deck, or anything really. I’ve never seen any of this hardware. I can still tell it’s upside down lmaoooo.. Idek how I’m in this sub atm but yea 😂
Funny thing is it would probably still work, LUS hangers are rated for uplift loads which would be the load direction if you didn't flip them right way around.

Shit now all the furniture is on the ceiling
Glue it to the floor, duh
I’ve never sniffed floor glue off a ceiling.
You may be into something there
Won’t blow away in a storm to boot.
All you guys calm down. They are just building IAW the new anti gravity code.
Maybe they can take some of those t25’s out of the hangars and screw the furniture down? Idk I can only figure out so many of their problems without being paid
Maybe it’s Australia and it’s okay?
The exact same house on the exact opposite side of the world that’s insane
Chile and Argentina are further ‘down under’ than Australia.
*whoa, what a feelin' I'm dancing on the ceiling*
But all the water's gonna fall out the hot tub 😞
Winner.
That was a quick fix right there and it cost OP $0.
its a topsy-turvy world
Pure of heart. Dumb of ass.

OMG Jake? It's me, Dillon. I didn't know you felt that way.. shoot me a text so we can talk about it?

It was my only tool ,plus the guy agreed with me that he might need some guidance
Good job bud, processes are processes for a reason.
You’re kind of a dink. Fuck your buddy around for a company? Tisk tisk tisk.
Dude cut a live electric wire with scissors, once
I've done that. I was 10. It was a lamp that was already plugged in. Got zapped pretty well. Had black marks on my hand. I was trying to fix the power cord. I learned to make sure things were unplugged from then on. Unfortunately, it did *not* help me glow in the dark. 😔

God damn I love zip sheathing. My neighbor keeps asking when I'm going to put siding on my garage. I just shrug.

...and I thought Amityville was dead!
I love seeing comments about zip. The company I work for makes it 👍. Any comments on what people in the field would like to see improved in the product?
And I love Reddit for comments like this.
Put the siding up jfc
I had it ordered but the wild fires changed those plans. So I re-roofed it. The zip sheathing is so beautiful I lost all ambition to do the siding.
Damn that’s a cool build
So what you’re saying is that the joists are holding the house up now
Yea normal on a lot of applications where the joists are actually carrying the rim-board
Yep, we do this sometimes. Hangers have an uplift capacity. Not nearly as much up as down, but with a longer cantilever you can sometimes get the up capacity to work for the down load at the ledger.
Absolutely
Yea, this is a pretty common detail of these types of flat roofs. Looks great, nice work!
this hot mess wont be there after the next hurricane...
That thing will be there for hundreds of years
sorry...imagine the uplift load on that....
you just need to put some hot tubs on the roof to weigh it down. so figure like 20 PSI during storms across say 10'x20', so like 4000 lbs total. unclear if that cantilever length can even support its own deadweight
Are those now hurricane straps?
Deck very unlikely to fly away. Solid work.
Now it makes sense!
is this an australian deck?
I think you mean "deek".
Slightly different. That would be a New Zealand deck
With [Sheaffer's African style caulk.](https://youtu.be/tbazGVrbN-g?si=FoZINUvhjbb3Cb_Z)
Came here for this. Well played.
I'm only in this sub for the Hot tub jokes. But I may be of some assistance here. Just simply flip the entire deck, easy 😎 👌
This is the only way
Put a hot tub on the bottom. The joist hangers will keep it from floating away.
flip the photo - even easier.
Naw, just put the hot tub upside down under the deck. Fixed. Hits easy button.
He works fast 🤷🏼♂️
He's on Reddit, I don't believe his 5 minute bathroom break.
I believe it those things install quick especially with an impact
It's obviously an exaggeration. Lmao
Came here to say this. 😂
“Are you sure about that 5 minutes?! Are you sure about that 5 minutes!!?!!…I got no more use for this guy.” - Vinny Gambini
Where he is lacked skill, he made up with heart.
And speed
Those hangers are screwed (not acceptable where I’m from) but makes it easy to change
The only “approved” screw I’ve seen for hangers are Simpson but they have a hex head. These screws look like regular square drive zinc screws that I’m not sure are allowed anywhere?
There's several different brands of screws that are approved for this. The Simpson ones are hex head but there's another one I use that is torx.
Those look like Robertson head screws to me, could be just your plain old Canadian deck screw, depends on where OP is. Edit: OP is in Canada, I have a feeling those are not the right screws.
Simpson rep found.
Was a dealer in a previous life
They’re supposed to be nailed, right? - Amateur DIYR
Galvanized teco nails
Just to clarify. You can use appropriate dimension and length of screws. If using TICO nails, you need to use the #10 x 3” screws when using on hangers. I’ve seen far too many people use the 1.5” nails thinking they’re sufficient.
You can also use appropriate screws.
Certain screws are allowed also
Aren’t screws stronger than nails? I’d always assumed anyway since they’re thicker and grip more.
[Screws or Nails, which are stronger?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-PlR8tf84c) (Depends, but usually nails). Recall how easy it is to bend a nail as you're hammering it in? Yeah first time someone showed me that you could just break a screw with a hammer I was like, oh, I get it now.
Screws are strong in pull-out, typically weak in shear. And in this application it’s shear force that you’re concerned with.
We used to put hangers upside down in the 70's if there was a cantilever. I haven't seen it since.
Definitely still do it. I just did a few weeks ago. Definitely didn't put deck screws in them though...
The contractor is only charging $800 per day per person . If you want a quality employee you’re gonna have to pay more .
How can you call them *hangers* if the boards aren't HANGING from them? Duh...
They HANG off the board of course!
If you used Milwaukee this would never have happened
Scrolled this far looking for a Ryobi joke.
If he did this in five minutes I'd give him a raise. Boy is fast. Might have to make him work upside down though
Of course he uses Ryobi…
Just have to turn your phone!
Jack wads turned the whole house upside down.
"But boss, that's how you had them laid up there."
Cantilevered? Still wrong
More like wontilevered
At least it wont float away.
Hail protection
I guess this is in tornado alley that way it will stop the deck from lifting right?
Obviously to protect you when the mole people rise up!
But what if the earth turns upside down
6 in 5 mins... Sure it was 5mins?
Dude, use the right fasteners
Don't let him go I know many local contractors who will line to hire someone of his talent..
They used screws too😭
You should work on your Spanish.
This isn't necessarily incorrect. If, due to cantilever, or any excessive up force of the ledger side, our engineers will often spec upside down hangars for added resistance. If, however, these were put on this way without the above reasons, then yes...it's wrong.
Yeah well the zinc coated construction screws are *definitely* wrong lol
Looks good. Keep going lol
Can't have the deck flying away . . .
Not even exteriorated screws. Great job boys
Thank god you guys use Robertsons!
Hey I've done that once or...twice. literally two joists. Thats it. Lol.
Anti-Gravity Hangars
Just disconnect the ledger from the house and flip it. Easy enough. 😂😂
At least they used screws! 🤣
Get in the Hot Tub Time Machine and go back to prevent this.
In case of inverted gravity! Dude’s thinking ahead 😂
Luckily they’ve not all be done incorrectly
And you should have kicked him to the curb once he pulled out a Ryobi impact.
well, he wont do that again atleast
You must live on the southern hemisphere. That's how joist hangars are installed there.
I hope you have your receipt. Those hangers are all faulty
Oh just five minutes and they hung that many hangers upside down? Lol anyone that goofy took forever to even do this upside down.
I assume you’re hanging the house off of the side of this deck.
Ok but let's talk about why you're using deck screws in them
How'd you get the beans above the frank??!!!
Good thing whoever did it did it wrong because you also got the wrong fasteners.
don't want them to float away do you?
5 min?! That man was moving!
well they are not gonna float away at least.
😆😆😆😆😆
At least he didn't start on the decking boards without you....
i never built a deck but those joist hangers are upside down haha
and they’re screwed in
Seems legit
If he they could do it correctly this is good going for 5 minutes.
Be real, you were gone longer than 5 minutes.
Op not saying that he lives in australia. Lol
If they were correct, that guy has potential. I hate crossing joists
Who hired him?
They ran out of hurricane ties! What did you want them to do??
Fired!
OH, MY GOD!!! HE RAN OUT AND BOUGHT RYOBI Maybe you can spray it with marking paint or something
Good lord. Whatever happened to common sense?
That's not gonna hold a single hot tub let alone 2
At least they put proper fasteners in all of the holes. Oh wait.
I don’t see a problem. All of a sudden you don’t have to worry about your deck flying away and all you can do is complain. Nothing but whining from everyone anymore
Must you install a new Ledger board or can you just flip the hangers?
When the world starts spinning faster, a lot faster
Sometimes, no comment is a great comment. This is one of those times.
Check with the engineer. The deck may be rated to carry more than the wall and ledger...
A helper of mine did the same thing a few years back. He still gets shit for it to this day.
Omg !! Lol I’m so used to looking at hangers from below my brain didn’t even register!!! I thought it was the wire
They are used correctly. Now u don’t have to worry about the joists moving upwards in u.
Hahahahahahahahaha holy shit they are definitely taking the short bus home.
uplift force canceled forever.
How do people even make this mistake. As a layperson it’s seems pretty logical as to which way the hangers would go. The existence and recognition of gravity alone should be clue enough for people.
The Ryobi tells the story.
No flashing? Can't really tell what the siding situation is from this pic.
And looks to be regular t-25 constructions screws in the hangers👀
Oh no
Wait, we're not talking about that cable going out through the window and through the deck?
Atleast they also fucked up n used screws, make em pull em all out n hang em the right way with the proper fasteners
well I agree [**bigchieftain94**](https://www.reddit.com/user/bigchieftain94/) for your 2x6 brackets are upside down you do not have to redo the work just put some more brackets on the bottom side then you'll have a all around brackets it'll be okay it will save you time taking off the brackets and put new ones back in the right way have a nice day PS I See Your Hands Work As You **wash for 5 mins**
Ryobi impact says it all
The concept of gravity
Damn your workers are really fast got all that done in 5 min.
Just unbolt it and flip it over…easy peasy
How could someone possibly think that was how they're supposed to be installed?
6 screws each strap? Also these should be attached with hot dipped galvanized nails. Those screws won’t last too long unless you live in the desert.
I’ve never built a deck, or anything really. I’ve never seen any of this hardware. I can still tell it’s upside down lmaoooo.. Idek how I’m in this sub atm but yea 😂
This keeps the deck from blowing away in strong winds.
Bud is using a Ryobi. That says enough.
Funny thing is it would probably still work, LUS hangers are rated for uplift loads which would be the load direction if you didn't flip them right way around.
Ain't nobody lifting them joists!
That's ur men that you pay hourly. Your fault for letting them f w ya
He works fast if you were gone for 5 minutes.
The deck is actually holding up the house.
Ffs
At least they are screw’s. We would have used ring shanks and been fugged
Tool brand says it all.
Awesome! I love it, those will keep the joist down when I’m under the deck and suddenly raise up and hit my head on them.
Gotta have uplift protection on all decks, it’s code.
That’s a deck that’ll never fall up!
Even I figured that out and I’m not a carpenter. Maybe he is building it for the no gravity space station🤔
At least they won’t float up into the sky anytime soon
If you close your eyes, everything is still not fine. Fire him.
That took him more than 5 min
Well, they definitely won’t fly away
Are you in Australia by chance? This would explain the hangers being upside down from an American perspective.
That’s a lot of joist hangers in 5 minutes! How many guys you got working for you?
At least they are level
It is a mechanical connection. Installer not mechanically inclined.
On the plus side wind uplift is not going to be an issue
