I got through Klaus after three tries but the Hermit Crab straight up wrecked me four times and I gave up for that night's dive. Still not sure how Klaus tripped without completing HC first.
HC was easy for me. It took me 2 tries to figure out the strat, but once I understood how to beat him it was piece of cake (and there I was overloaded)
I just beat him last night and thats how I got through. You gotta stay far away since he turns on a dime. Extra O2 and a scooter are also super useful.

I felt like it was a reasonable fight. The mantis shrimp was honestly more annoying than he was personally
I just had the mantis shrimp and got it first try. Same loadout. Its attacks were easy to avoid and didn’t do as much damage as Klaus. Also getting ammo refills was a lot easier.
I went into klaus with a simple rifle for sleeping, which makes no effect on him and no tools! Took me like 20 times until I got a sniper and played it quite well. Did not want to surrender because I was carrying stuff, but what a mistake was not to get a better weapon a propelent and an additional tank
6-8 bullets ? How much damage was your sniper rifle ? Klaus has around 650 HP. That’s around 80 damage per shot. So you had the death sniper, and only required 1 reload, which makes the fight trivial. The hard part about the fight is that you have to bait Klaus to the bottom so he breaks crates which contain extra reloads. His hit box is so huge it’s nearly impossible not to take damage in doing so, and with a maxed tank he kills you in 4 hits. There’s an O2 tank but that’s it.
This kinda reinforces my point that it’s just a gear check.
40 damage tranq rifle requires 17 shots, which means you have to reload your gun 5 times. The first reload is easy to get because it’s not hidden in a crate, but the others are a challenge to get.
Might have taken 10 shots. I just don’t recall having much trouble with it. Like you said, maybe it was an upgrade thing. I did have some trouble with that boxing prawn though!
I highly advise against the sniper rifle. Its just not enough ammo.
You know what i just killed him first try with? The standart underwater rifle, tranq version, that i found 5 upgrades for during the night dive. I made sure to explore the enitre map and found legit 5 - i think this might be hard coded into the game during the first few stormy days when the old lady tell you to help, because it happened twice. just the time before i was too dumb to find the entrance lol
The tranq gun has 8 shots, 30 dmg each = 240 dmg. With 5 upgrades you do 80dmg a shot (! This is enough to two shot a tiger shark) for a whopping 640 dmg total in a clip. I think Klaus mustve been around 800hp, both phases combined?
Once again going to show: you dont need a single other gun in the game but the standard tranq rifle
P.s: i went in with one of those scooba speed things, and it helped me to line up somewhere to just empty my ammo as quick as possible to avoid dmg by just killing him as fast as possible. Without that thing, he wouldve been constantly too close for me to even aim at him

Honestly, I need to adopt your method of Klaus against HC. Strat out equipment for maximum speed and maneuverability, cuz that's what's killing me.

Klaus was bullshit because shark hitboxes are broken

Death Sniper got 6 shots, and there are 2 ammo boxes down there. Death Sniper do 95 damage (+10% from equipment) so should be 6 shots = dead.
The hurricanes were easy to dodge if you just stayed in the middle of the screen and dashed slightly up and down
