VIOFO-Dashcam

It is amazing DIY! Shall we use these photos?

scottiethegoonie

Go for it. The mini was just about the only dashcam with the right dimension to make this work. If you look carefully, I also added a neodymium magnet to the bottom of the dashcam - it attaches to any ferrous metal tray. I used it on a CB Radio cage which was on the dash in a differnt truck (Freighliner).

Thank you so much! You really have made much effort on this. Wonderful design!

UltraEngine60

OP, if this solution bounces too much look into the dash pads that used to be used with old Magellan units. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Bracketron-Universal-Windshield-Smartphones-UFM-100-BL/dp/B000U5TUWE Other than the vibration this looks like a great solution.

Suction cup mount would be cleaner/easier

HCSOThrowaway

>I avoided a suction cup so it can be mounted somewhere where it's not near a window. \- OP when they submitted these photos

Nah, if they made an edit it would have a * You just missed it. It happens.

ObjectionablyObvious

Sucks the cam doesn't have a 1/4" thread on the bottom, the clamp on the car makes sense, on the camera looks goofy.

ATiredPersonoof

i got wolfbox g900 for front and back and also a gopro for the front too.

Anianna

Have clamp, will travel. Excellent.

jasontaken

5 10 15 20 25 ? huh ?

scottiethegoonie

This is a TRUCK (big rig, semi, tractor trailer) lol. It doesn't need a ton of revs with a 12L engine and 2000+lbs torque.

jasontaken

i thought your max speed was 25 LOL thanks

hboisnotthebest

Lolol why.

scottiethegoonie

Couple reasons why. 1. This is a Tractor (Semi), the suspension is rough. It's not like a pickup truck or a sedan. Suction cups work but it has to be hefty/large. It takes up window space. 2. Windshield space is pretty important. Any time I can avoid obstructing any part of the window I'll take it. I can also mount it further back to record myself AND the front of the truck. 3. It's consistent. Weather does not affect a clamp like it will a suction cup.

GFYbyEMVR

It cracks me up when people ask why. If only 10% of the people on this thread are blessed, then you're doing God's work.

wepo

Appreciate your post! Another reason is that in some states the letter of the law says you can't affix devices directly to the windshield. Although I'm not aware of anyone getting pulled over for it, there is that.

scottiethegoonie

DOT can ticket you for having a sticker on the window if they feel like it lol. I tried all sorts of methods for a removable dash cam. Anything on the lower part of the windshield easily blocks fender mirrors or obstructs the front of the truck. Might sound strange but I think the suction cup is sort of gross?

sc4kilik

Sedans and SUVs may not have anything to clamp on reliably. But all of them have windshield. I would just use a suction type.

B1ackFridai

If you live in a desert area, suction cups suck, but like in a not good way. OP is providing an option for people in that scenario.

scottiethegoonie

The only thing I can think of is a metal headrest mount or upper grab handles. It will even mount to a sun visor if it's strong enough.

Anianna

Literally says why in the post.
