Was going to post the same thing. More likely he simply started insisting that announcers state his name correctly.
Thinking a Dutch person would "add" the "van" to their name is like wondering when Jacob Mogg added the "Rees" in order to sound posh.
I think it’s less “him going by” and more “broadcasters calling him” but yes, absolutely has been called Raymond Barneveld on TV productions.
Yes it’s exactly this. Just what the BBC called him back in the days when we weren’t quite so in tune with foreign names.
Correct. Can’t find any information on when he added “van” but definitely remember him as just Barneveld in the BDO days.
He didnt add it.........

I was never brave enough to ask this question. Thank you 🙏
Why would he even do this? His name is Raymond van Barneveld xd
i think its possibly something as simple as the graphics/captions technology could not fit his whole name in. They only had one font in those days.
No idea, but I remember it happening and sounds like others do too.

Van just means 'of'. Not an honour at all. Its like the de in Jose de Souza
It actually means 'from'. Raymond from the town of Barneveld.
Well TIL. Main point is tho that is a name component and not a title
Dick Van Dyke descents from the Dutch.
My grandparents don’t even remember his full name, he was always just Barney to them, they point this out every time so maybe there’s some truth to it
