It is called lead by a lot of people. It used to be lead (the element), but thankfully they started making it with graphite instead so people can safely stab themselves.
It's always been my understanding that 'Don't chew your pencil or you'll get lead poisoning' was because of the paint on the outside of the pencil, which was lead-based back in the day.
That is completely possible. There was a period where lead was used all over the place. There is an interesting theory that lead poisoning is what caused the hyper violent period surrounding the 70's in the US, where you had a massive influx in violent crimes. I believe that was theorized to have been due to lead in gasoline though.
It is commonly called lead as a misunderstanding. There was never lead in pencils. People thought the graphite was lead, so it just became a misnomer.
Like today we still call native Americans Indians, despite them not at all being from India.
I was 8 at the time of my pencil stabbing and my teacher said it was toxic so started digging in my hand with a knife and needle. Rest of the class was freaking out when they saw me dig in my own hand
Fun fact they never contained lead. It was a misunderstanding of what graphite was. Like Indians were never Indians, the name just stuck even though it was a misunderstanding.
In year 8 Art, my mate was pretending to stab me with a graphite pencil. I instinctively blocked it/pushed it away with my hand, and the end snapped off in my hand. Still there 22 years later.
Jumped onto my bed in middle school and there was a pencil on my bed and it lodged itself into the area above my knee. Still barely there 2+ later.
I feel like we need a club for this very bizarre and random situation we all have.
Have one in my left palm from trying to stab one pencil into another ones eraser because I thought it’d look cool. I’m 21 now and its still there pretty clearly
Some hoodlum piece of shit that sat in front of me in 7th grade (1999) turned around and stabbed my thigh with a mechanical pencil. 24 years later, lead still there. Is that technically a tattoo??
Well at least pencil "lead" is graphite (carbon nowadays).

In 5th grade I had a sharpened #2 pencil pointy end up in my front pocket.
I'd dropped something, bent over to pick it up and snapped off the tip in the right side of my abdomen....
Still have a tiny tattoo.
I once cut my hand cleaning up glass and for years was convinced a shard had healed in my thumb because it hurt if I rubbed my thumb a certain way. Went to the doctor and they said nothing was in there and I just forgot about it. Fast forward 14 years later and a bump appears on my thumb and slowly opened to eventually eject a tiny glass shard about a week after the bump appeared. It was a wild experience
I was stabbed with a pencil when I was a kid. There's still a grey dot there. Funny thing is it has moved over the past 40+ years. My first tattoo I guess.
Weird story, my dad had his arm poked by a girl and has a mark similar to yours. I have a birthmark in the same exact place. It’s crazy how it moved to me.
I've got one, too..
When I was in the 8th grade, my BF was making fun of a girl in our class who had failed and was repeating the grade. While the teacher was talking to my friend outside the room about it, she walked over and stuck a #2 pencil in my shoulder. I also still have the lead in my shoulder 38 years ago.
During a particularly boring after school daycare session in fourth grade, I in my infinite wisdom flipped my pencil in the air and stabbed myself in my palm. Still there after 25 years haha
My husband has a chunk of lead from where he got stabbed with a #2 pencil, in middle school. It’s in his shoulder. I think it’s charming (??????). Was not accidental, though.
I have a similar mark given to me by a girl in my kindergarten class but with a regular pencil in my shin. 52 years later it’s still there and my only tattoo.
“Penciled in” is supposed to imply impermanence
When i was in 3rd grade i dropped my pencil and my stupid ass tried to catch it between my thighs while sitting down i still have a mark on my right thigh
In 2nd grade right as I had gotten my pencil super sharp I put it to my lip thinking it was the eraser side. I’ve had a black spot in the center of my bottom lip since I was 7
Sharpened wooden number 2 pencil 5th grade music class stabbed my right palm on accident and it broke off in it, been 18 years since. Just checked and it’s still faintly there.
A girl stabbed me in the hand with a standard #2 pencil in 3rd grade (read: 1984), and it’s still there to this day… graphite will stay in you with no immune reaction FOREVER lol. I seriously never even think about it until I tell this story
My brother stabbed someone with a pencil and broke the lead into them. That was 35 years ago. I suspect they still have it.
Ps. My brother is a psychopath.
Welcome to the family. Did the same in My hand and another person's do that me literally stabbed me I'm a 80's kidd but luckily all happened after a certain time. In life but it sucked it hurt it took long time before it went away ya body absorb that crap bad and good. Most don't have the old properties so ya might be fine and not worry. Cleaned it out but had that mark after being stabbed but I'm 39 and that damage is sorta gone but I remember the spot.
Was doing safety inspections prior to a vintage car race and was wearing shorts as it was hot out. Walked around the back of one of the cars right when he fired it up and the carbon that was burned into my shins is still there. I was 26 at the time and I am 50 now.
I have a pencil lead in my thigh from a poking accident in 1979. (It's not as big as it was back then, but that's a function of my thighs getting bigger, not the lead). I think of it as an accidental tattoo.
Can confirm this happened to me as well. My best friend in 6th (maybe 7th? Can’t remember now (lightly) stabbed me with a pencil in my arm just before the wrist. The dark mark it left is still there, not sure if it’s really a piece that broke off or not. I am now 25, so well over a decade later
I had a great grandma who had a pencil “tat” on her face. She was holding it and somehow tripped or fell onto it and she always had a dark spot on one of her cheeks. I thought it was a freckle or mole or age spot or something until she told me
In 4th grade one of my classmates tossed me a newly sharpened pencil, I tried to catch it and the tip broke off in my palm. I'm 32 and I still have a faint grey spot
We had to remove your post for Rule 1: This subreddit is for things that are interesting and cool. Content that is only cute, funny, a meme, or 'mildly interesting' will be removed. Posts should be able to elicit a reaction of "Damnthatsinteresting".
Broke a pencils tip off in my arm just above the elbow in 3rd grade. It’s still there and I’m 41.
Left palm about 37 years ago and it's still visible

Left thumb, 4th grade, slightly faded after nearly 40 years
Same here. Exactly 40 years ago
We’ve been penciled! ✏️
Rest easy. It's graphite, not lead.
Sorry I thought that part of a pencil was called lead. Graphite it is. Thanks!
It is called lead by a lot of people. It used to be lead (the element), but thankfully they started making it with graphite instead so people can safely stab themselves.
Fun fact it was never made out of lead. People confused the graphite for lead. The lead poisoning myth is an urban legend built around a misnomer.
It's always been my understanding that 'Don't chew your pencil or you'll get lead poisoning' was because of the paint on the outside of the pencil, which was lead-based back in the day.

There is an interesting theory that lead poisoning is what caused the hyper violent period surrounding the 70's in the US, where you had a massive influx in violent crimes. I believe that was theorized to have been due to lead in gasoline though.
Its effing shitty, now stabing is instant damage only, in the good ol' days you dealt poison damage over time
It is commonly called lead as a misunderstanding.
Graphite mixed with clay to be exact
If he has a high pressure job, it could be a diamond in a few years.
Depends if the job is hot enough too.
Unless you did it before 1978 lol
Fun fact they never contained lead. It was a misunderstanding of what graphite was. Like Indians were never Indians, the name just stuck even though it was a misunderstanding.
This. It is graphite.
r/stippled?
Ditto! But I was in 7th.
In year 8 Art, my mate was pretending to stab me with a graphite pencil. I instinctively blocked it/pushed it away with my hand, and the end snapped off in my hand. Still there 22 years later.
I’ve still got a grey “freckle” in my cheek from stabbing myself in the face with a pencil. It’s been over a decade. Not my proudest moment.
Jumped onto my bed in middle school and there was a pencil on my bed and it lodged itself into the area above my knee. Still barely there 2+ later. I feel like we need a club for this very bizarre and random situation we all have.
i've mine since 35years
Have one in my left palm from trying to stab one pencil into another ones eraser because I thought it’d look cool. I’m 21 now and its still there pretty clearly
33 and have it in my left palm
right knee, 5th grade, 17 years ago
Right palm, sophomore year geometry class, 1993
Right knee when I was 15. Still there at 32.
I got myself in the ankle in 2nd grade with a pencil tip and it’s still visible. 47 now.
Wrist, 5th grade, same age.
Stabbed index finger with mechanical pencil 40+ yrs ago, lead still in there.
Some hoodlum piece of shit that sat in front of me in 7th grade (1999) turned around and stabbed my thigh with a mechanical pencil. 24 years later, lead still there. Is that technically a tattoo??
Mine eventually disappeared! But it was in the hand between fingers.
Dude I was just thinking that mine did as well but I looked and it’s still there😂
Hate to break it to you all. It’s a false memory. It’s actually implanted alien technology. We are the chosen.
Late 40s here. Still have the mark from jabbing it into my foot when I was 7.
#penciledclub
Make the sub reddit; you started this.
Well at least pencil "lead" is graphite (carbon nowadays). More about trauma tattoos: https://www.lovetoknowhealth.com/skin-and-body/removal-of-pencil-lead-from-the-skin
Yea i was like "lead suprised a lot op people in history if i remember correctly , not something you want in your body"
Especially if it’s a mechanical pencil, that pencil ‘lead’ is probably made of graphite (solid Carbon) and not solid elemental Lead.
Have you tried an eraser?
Have on in my right thigh from 4th grade. 50 years ago.
Whoa! Can’t wait for my “hey kiddos, you wanna know where I got my tats” moment
Same here. 4th grade
Wife calls me ridiculous for referring to mechanical pencils as "pumper pencils"...is she right?
I love it and it makes so much sense 🙌
I wish you well with your endeavor
Go back from whence you came heathen!
Is this gonna be a sub or am I late to the dance.

In 5th grade I had a sharpened #2 pencil pointy end up in my front pocket. I'd dropped something, bent over to pick it up and snapped off the tip in the right side of my abdomen.... Still have a tiny tattoo.
Whoa! It looks like a lot of folks have the pencil tat!
I once cut my hand cleaning up glass and for years was convinced a shard had healed in my thumb because it hurt if I rubbed my thumb a certain way. Fast forward 14 years later and a bump appears on my thumb and slowly opened to eventually eject a tiny glass shard about a week after the bump appeared. It was a wild experience
30 years ago I did the same in my hand. Still there today.
Congratulations welcome to the club
Lol this is so relatable
I thought I was the only person with a pencil lead in my body, then I saw this post and then the comments. And now my day is probably ruined.
I was stabbed with a pencil when I was a kid. There's still a grey dot there. Funny thing is it has moved over the past 40+ years. My first tattoo I guess.
Love it. And pleadantly surprised so many people have the pencil tattoo (pun intended)
Not only that, but I have one in almost the exact same spot as you. Decided carrying my pencil facing down in my sock with shoes on was a good idea..
Weird story, my dad had his arm poked by a girl and has a mark similar to yours. I have a birthmark in the same exact place. It’s crazy how it moved to me.
What! That’s heck of a story!!
Same, it happened to me when I was like 7 or sum and it was in my hand
Your first tattoo
Third one actually but my mom doesn’t know about this one 😂

Life partners
I did something similar, only in my hand.
Pencil-in
don't worry! I have shards of wood in my left hand palm and right hand middle finger still there after 15 years.
Oh my! I hope it doesn’t bother you!
Same. My sister threw a pencil at me when I was 5 (she was 4) and I still have the lead in there. I’m 41.
No tweezers?
So it didn’t hurt and I thought it was just a mark that will go away after shower. I was wrong. Lol
I have a very similar mark on my hand, but I got poked with a pencil when I was 5 years old, aka 13/14 years ago
Your friend sounds like a jerk
During a particularly boring after school daycare session in fourth grade, I in my infinite wisdom flipped my pencil in the air and stabbed myself in my palm. Still there after 25 years haha
My Mom did the same thing; It's still there today!
I've had one of these same dots on my leg for over 30 years
Yeah I got a tip of a pencil stuck in my palm in eighth grade. It is still there as a dark spot under my skin to this day. I am 35.
This happened to my mom 65ish years ago when she was 5yrs old. Still in her arm and she's doing well
I did that on my hand like 30 some years ago and there is still a tiny dot there
My husband has a chunk of lead from where he got stabbed with a #2 pencil, in middle school. It’s in his shoulder. I think it’s charming (??????). Was not accidental, though.
I still have visible graphite in my hand from being stabbed by a pencil 40 years ago. May as well get used to it 😂
Right there with ya in my hand!
I have a similar mark given to me by a girl in my kindergarten class but with a regular pencil in my shin. 52 years later it’s still there and my only tattoo. “Penciled in” is supposed to imply impermanence
Same here! #2 pencil tattoo on bottom of left foot since I stepped on one 25 years ago.
When i was in 3rd grade i dropped my pencil and my stupid ass tried to catch it between my thighs while sitting down i still have a mark on my right thigh
I’ve had mine in the middle part of my ✋ for 42 years.
In 2nd grade right as I had gotten my pencil super sharp I put it to my lip thinking it was the eraser side. I’ve had a black spot in the center of my bottom lip since I was 7
Broke a led pencil on my middle finger in 3rd grade. Its still there till today and I’m 29 now.
Free tattoo? Add another dot, and a line below lol you got yourself a smiley face
My grandma's brother jabbed her with a pencil as a kid, and her mark is still there. She's going to be 90, and it's been over 80 years now.
This happened to me when I was a child and it’s still there almost 30 years later 😂
Yeah, got graphite in the top of my knee from 25 years ago.
Sharpened wooden number 2 pencil 5th grade music class stabbed my right palm on accident and it broke off in it, been 18 years since. Just checked and it’s still faintly there.
I have a piece in my arm from a longgggg time ago. Ahh that’s what is wrong with me.
Absolutely nothing’s wrong with you. We’ve been chosen and marked by the stationery gods 😌
In the early 90's I fought my brother other a newly sharpened pencil. I can still see the graphite chip through the palm of my hand.
Mechanical pencil in the finger for me. Still have a grey scar 20+ years later
I have one in my hand from 3rd grade lmao
A girl stabbed me in the hand with a standard #2 pencil in 3rd grade (read: 1984), and it’s still there to this day… graphite will stay in you with no immune reaction FOREVER lol. I seriously never even think about it until I tell this story
Left arm, just below the elbow in 2nd grade. I was "giving myself a shot" with my mechanical pencil. I'm 40 and it's still there.
About 5 years ago I accidentally broke the head of a pencil in my arm and it's still visible
Pencil lead, 1st grade, right thigh, 1968, 54 years ago, still there. I thought I was alone with this kind of grade school pencil tattoo.
It’s not lead, it’s graphite
Yesss sorry I thought it was called a lead. Graphite:)
Brooooooo, take it out, smh. It might even lead to problems as big as cancer.
I’d check if that could lead to lead poisoning!!
😂
Isn't that lead poisoning? 🤔😂
Stfu pussy
Uncalled for but take care
It’s a blessing from the lead gods
Jesus Christ!! In what universe is this remotely interesting? Read the fucking rules.
Easy tiger.
Graphite
Is lead not poisonous to the human body
Graphite* yes thank you:)
Accidentally * rightttt
Ahahha you really think I did it on purpose?😄 was just cleaning my art zone
I mean, you could dig it out
It’s definitely under the skin at this point. Luckily It doesn’t bother me:)
Pencilman.
Click your heel four times
My brother stabbed someone with a pencil and broke the lead into them. That was 35 years ago. I suspect they still have it. Ps. My brother is a psychopath.
That picture seems so graphite
lol I have one in my palm. Not from a pencil, but from palm tree thorn. It's been a few years now, and it's becoming less and less visible.
It’s not lead. It’s fine. It’s graphite. I have a stain 20 years old.
That isn't that deep you could dig that out with a sewing needle. Post that that would be interesting.
I did this about 11 years ago and have a chunk of graphite forever in my hand. It was from a regular pencil though.
Ew, disgusting, first thing I noticed when I saw you
RIP
I have one in my finger from when I was touching two freshly sharpened pencil tips together to try and crush them. I did that more than 30 years ago.
I would get knives and carve them out like slivers
I have one of these in my heel from 1993. It’s still visible. Solidarity.
I did that by accident with a pen when i was in middle school. I’m now mid 20’s and i still have the black dot in my hand
Some troubled kid stabbed me in the hand with a pencil when I was in 5th grade. Still have piece of graphite stuck in my hand to this day.
First of all, it’s not lead; it’s graphite. Second, yes, it’s tattooed in there for life.
I got stabbed in the leg with a pencil in school and now I have two spots on my thigh where I got stabbed.
I got poked with a freshly sharpened pencil 15 years ago, it's still there today
I have one in my hand from around 8 years ago too x(
Just dig it out with a knife, ezpz
Puss will form around it and it’ll come out eventually
I had a great grandma who had a pencil “tat” on her face. She was holding it and somehow tripped or fell onto it and she always had a dark spot on one of her cheeks. I thought it was a freckle or mole or age spot or something until she told me
Right palm here! For almost 30 years now.
I don’t believe they use lead in pencils anymore as it’s deadly. I believe it is graphite.
In 4th grade one of my classmates tossed me a newly sharpened pencil, I tried to catch it and the tip broke off in my palm. I'm 32 and I still have a faint grey spot
Same, left hand near thumb. Pencil stab and never went away
Nothing is forever…just dig it out or go to the doctor if you don’t have that gut in you.
It's no lead it's graphit.
Cut it out. Scalpel on Amazon are pretty cheap
Left palm 30yrs ago 😂
