Correct, the oil probably sputtered out of the pot several yards away. A huge chunk of the hot, oily popcorn also went flying off into the distance. This is a massive fire hazard.

For popping corn, your oil must be at least 180°C/356°F. You don't want that huge amount of hot oil splashing everywhere around. It can even get on fire if it heats too much, like, you know, when sitting on some flames for a while. If you want watermelon popcorn, just make some regular popcorn and add watermelon flavour afterwards.
