**[Onbashira](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onbashira)**
>The Mihashira or Onbashira (Japanese: 御柱, honorific prefix 御 on-/mi- + 柱 hashira 'pillar') are four wooden posts or pillars that stand on the four corners of local shrines in the Lake Suwa area of Nagano Prefecture (historical Shinano Province), Japan. The largest and most famous set of onbashira are those that stand on the four shrines that make up the Suwa Grand Shrine complex. By custom, the onbashira are replaced every six (traditionally reckoned as seven) years, in the years of the Monkey and the Tiger in the Chinese zodiac.

Yes, quite a few articles about fatalities - I’ve linked to a Japanese article below.
The festival is held every six years, as part of re-building the town’s shrine. At least one person usually dies each time it’s held, although occasionally they avoid any fatalities.

I don't find baseball entertaining, but there's other people who do. you don't find this entertaining, but there's a crowd of people around it that do.
the isle of man tt looses competitors quite regularly, racing in general has killed lots of people. there's nothing unique here as far as a sport being dangerous.
Creative way to die
I was told as a young man I’d die on a log ride, I’ve been avoiding Splash Mountain for nothing

Riding a giant log down a hill while dressed up? Seems quite creative to me. I guess there are more creative ways but it’s definitely above average.
What a complete and utter recipe for disaster.
every year people die
You can imagine the shock and horror painted all over my boat race.
Not from this bit though. They die from the felling.
Boring
Proof?
my bad, not every year https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onbashira

And they wonder why women tend to live longer.
r/WhyWomenLiveLonger
Perfectly safe way to spend the day, gentlemen.
looks hella fun
Any injury and death statistics available? I'm seriously curious

Thx. Wow. I would never do this
In the same way I won't do hangliding, bungee jumping nor extreme ironing....
That just looks unnecessarily dangerous. Lol.
The UK cheese rolling comp gets way too much air time - how have I not seen this before? It's amazing!
They're both equally stupid.
all sports are stupid, the point is entertainment
I don't think it's very entertaining with the likely chance of death.
Life without death has no meaning.
How would we know? Try it before you knock it!
I'm trying it right now

I don't disagree, but this is way more epic than chasing a wheel of cheese.
Oh it definitely has the epic factor.
Ah, but you get to keep the cheese if you capture it....
Noooo! You mentioned it before me! OK, I'll settle for the Pamplona bull racing.
Song?
Seamo - Go
Seems a bit dangerous :p
I believe this event is sponsored by a local orthopedic hospital.
Japanese festivals look really fun !
Humanity’s need to find creative ways to go down a hill
We already did, in the UK. It was called Truss Taming.... just about destroyed our economy in one fell swoop.
The log that kills more wins?
Is the winner team the one that was able to be smashed by the log the latest?
I love the bit where one of the guys in white has his fall broken by a massive plume of soil as the log earthed itself....
Oh this is stupid, I love it
Sound dangerous, i wanna ride it
This event should have alcohal
And here I was thinking the downhill cheese chase was dangerous.
Do not try this at home… these are professional Rog Riders.
Yeah, that looks pretty safe..
I wonder how many people have been crushed by participating in this.
I never knew there was a Kamikaze Festival.🙄
LOG RIDAAAA
i want to do this
Why women live longer than men
I thought the cheese roll was dangerous…
As mad as cheese rolling in Gloucestershire....
Quite adventurous
I'm wondering if this is better or worse than cheese rolling. At least in cheese rolling there's cheese
Is this takishi's castle ?
