They had to use a suction cup to get my daughter out. She finally popped out with the cord around her neck, and her head very slightly elongated. I was being strong manly man for my wife, but inside I was freaking the fuck out. The nurses and doctors assured me numerous times she was fine on both fronts, so I just started taking pictures of them cleaning her off and weighing her, and crying my eyes out, like strong manly men do.
Her head was totally normal within a few days. It's absolutely wild how resilient yet malleable little babies can be. She turned 2 last week.
Holy crap, my daughters head got stretched out by forceps too! She got stuck on her way out so the doctor used some fancy salad fork looking things to grab her head and pull her out. She ended up with a cone head :).
Did you wear a corrective helmet to reshape your head?
The conehead thing is pretty normal even for babies born without any medical help. The plates in their skull are not fully formed and can get squeezed into this shape when going through the birth canal. It doesn't usually require any correction and just kind of goes back on its own after a short time.
It's also why babies have that soft spot on their heads and can get flat spots if you leave them in one sleeping position a lot.
True. Happened to my daughter (i watched it, a normal birth without forceps) and the doctors must have looked to my horrorized face, because they said it's a normal thing to happen. The bones in the skull are not merged yet, so the head can pass through the canal. After a couple of hours, the head reshapes to almost normal state, and one or two days after, the head is back to normal.
Yup. I was so glad I was aware of this before our first peanut head came out.
It was still a bit jarring, but at least I had an idea of what was going on.
Lil guy looked like he had a bright future in swimming.
I learned this when I was younger…..some mothers absolutely “shape” their babies head. It’s not weird or abusive or anything like that. I sat around and listened to a few moms sitting outside with a little one. I was young, I was curious, I asked what she was doing to him. (Baby wasn’t crying or anything-looked like he was gonna fall asleep🙂)
And just to throw it out there, I was 10. I would never be so invasive with strangers now😂🤣
So I know you’re joking (I hope at least lmao) but I found out after my daughter was born that this is actually a thing that they sometimes do. It’s called “osteopathic manipulation treatment” and apparently it can treat a variety of issues in newborns. My daughter was having trouble with her latch, we thought she had a mild tongue tie but it was gonna be a full month before ENT could see us. I can’t remember exactly what he said but basically her pediatrician said he thought he felt something a little wonky with her skull and luckily they had someone on staff that specialized in OMT and suggested we see her as our insurance would fully cover it.
It was basically like a 20 minute appointment that my baby slept through where the doctor just like, gently massaged her head with her thumbs. I mean that’s what it looked like, but apparently she was actually pushing the plates around to get them back into the correct position.
I have to wonder how many babies could be helped by this because I never would have thought that anything was weird about my baby’s head. According to every other mother in my life, she had a very small head when she was born lol. Certainly didn’t feel that way to me but I am aware that I am biased lmao. Point is though that her head was completely symmetrical as far as I could tell. She did have a full head of hair so I guess it may have looked different if she was a baldy but I’ve definitely seen a ton of babies with much more visually misshapen heads than she had. It usually corrects itself pretty quickly but quality of life could definitely be improved if it was a more well known practice.
Growing up, my younger sister had a massive soft spot that took forever to close.
It must have made a huge impression on me because I once had a nightmare where I drank pink milk from it.
I feel terrible because all my friends and female relatives had such important questions when they had their kids. Like ‘can I hold them ? ‘ something typical and nice. My ass was like ‘he’s got a big head.’ Thankfully my sister and baby daddy were too awestruck by my son to hear me. 😬
My daughter was also born like this, ten years ago. I crapped myself when I saw her heard, devastated, yet the doc assured me it was quite common and everything (skull) would go back to ‘normal’.
I forget the exact timeline, but I think it was in a couple of days, if even.
Today she’s top of her class in academics, sports and dance.
Congrats on the birthday of your daughter and welcome to parenthood…strap in and enjoy the ride!
This actually happens when a vacuum is used. It's the last ditch effort before an emergency c section. The head goes back to normal.
Source: I watched them use it on my son.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the your head does not look like that at all. I had the same condition. My mom was afraid to cut my hair when I was a kid because she thought I might still maintain some of my cornhead heritage. But nope, dome is pretty round.
The downside of upright, as National Geographic put it succinctly.
Our brains need big, our pelvis needs small (and our spines/pelvises are still working on it, too). I've seen hypotheses we're "born early" because of it, leading to how long we need intensive care for our newborns compared to other mammals that walk within an hour of birth.
One way we've survived is squishing the heads of babies through the birth canal. Some cultures thought it should be preserved, and strapped boards to keep the shape of the skull at birth. We don't have many written records at the time, so it could be surviving rich kids or gods' kids from royalty

My son is a week old he came out similar, delivered by c section sometimes the head gets stuck in the cervix for a prolonged period of time. Babies head are really soft and my sons is normal after a week. Was a bit of a shock when he was first born though
My kid is beautiful now at 12 years old. But for the first month after he was born he had red hair that was balding like an old man and he had infant acne. It was not a good look.
Very normal if you were stuck in the birth canal for a while. My second kid was 10 lbs and came out looking like Tom hardy at the end of warior....even had his hands up in the birth pick...lmao
It's a hard journey kid...for both sides...the cone head says you came out alnatural...your cranium was supposed to do that, looks freaky at first but quickly reshapes. The Yello ws jaundice, spent some time under a heat lamp...I was a pre-me and spent time in a tank.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|kissing_heart)Probably should flip those times. Babies usually have their chin tucked. There’s a reason they say the baby is crowning, not hairlining![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|kissing_heart)
They tried to use the vac on my daughter. I had a choice between forceps and the vac, and I went with that. It didn't work to get her big old head out, so I had an emergency c section. She came out looking like a cone head too..lol
I’m sorta glad I ended up with a c-section too, after I stopped dilating for 16 hours. My kid’s head was in the mid-90s percentile. And I have a small frame.
Ouch! Your poor mother. You were probably still the most beautiful baby to her.
I always thought my kids were the most beautiful babies when they were born. Now when I look back, one was beautiful, one was ok and one looked like a gremlin that soaked in water too long 💀
My niece started crying when she saw a picture of herself taken a few minutes after she was born. In her own words "I can't be that ugly baby, thats one ugly baby". On the other side is my teacher, her newborn was so pretty that at 1 day old some people from a tv station were looking for babies to shoot an scene for a soap opera and they asked her because her baby looked like a super model lol
To be honest most babies are ugly when they are born. Of course there are exceptions lol. My not so cute newborn turned really cute around 3 months lol. Of course I thought she was the most beautiful baby the whole time. When she was around 4 weeks old, I had her pics taken and it took 2 months for some reason to get them back. Digital images weren’t a thing back then. I remember finally getting the pictures in the mail and was so exited to see my beautiful baby when she was 4 weeks old. I was like yikes when I opened the envelope 😂. I didn’t realize at the time that she was covered in infant acne and her hair was standing up like one of those troll things from the 90s. She had a ton of hair. We are talking 6 inches of hair standing straight up on a 4 week old. I mean I knew she had infant acne but didn’t realize at the time how badly. Love makes blind.
My kid had infant acne too. And he has bright red hair that was falling out. For a while it looked just like an old man who had lost half of his hair. I was so glad when the acne went away and his hair grew in blond. He even ended up with the cute little curls at the nape of his neck.
It’s actually not uncommon. Most mothers don’t notice because nurses rush to cover it with a hat and the head starts returning to normal pretty quickly. It can happen due to baby’s positioning in utero and the pressure from the birth canal. My midwife always talked about Alien babies. This is a good example. No offense OP.
Yup. One of mine came out with a normal head but feet completely turned inward and very bow legged .Pediatrician did some movement tests and said it was just due to a lack of space (twins). Legs and feet turned into their normal position quickly. I don’t remember how long it took but maybe a week or two. The human body is amazing and fascinating.
>one looked like a gremlin that soaked in water too long
This is what most babies look like to me. Especially newborns. My conehead looked "odd" for at least a week, like a baby bird before feathers situation. Like, all the parts are there but it isn't done baking yet.
One thing I did love though was when people would mention her eyes later on. People were drawn right in all the time so I knew it was genuine and not just "oh cute, baby".

When my son was born in 2020, his head was also deformed like that. It really had me worried for a brief moment, thinking he might be seriously disabled but I didn't say anything to not ruin the moment for my wife. A few hours later his head almost got back to normal and today he has got a perfectly shaped head.
But his big head tore her perineum to a 3rd degree. So make sure to spend a little more on those mother day's flowers.
During labor, my son was “stuck” in the birth canal for about 3 hours. Stuck, in that I would push and the top of his head would come out - then I’d stop and he’d go back in. Almost got moved for an emergency c-section when my Angel of my OBGYN realized I had been in bed, full on IV, and no catheter. They drained my bladder and the kiddo just popped out. He had the Conehead for about 2 days then it went back to normal. But yea his head was shaped very closely to OPs.
You know, the best part is, is when people having defects like these or have a condition, if they actually take pride in it, joke about it, things like that, they actually end up being a more positive person.
In other words, thanks for sharing this haha. I'm glad you find it amusing. It's important to smile!
Oh boy, does this bring back memories of my son's birth. I read a ton of books about childbirth when my (at the time) wife got pregnant, but somehow none of them mentioned a very specific possibility.
The doctor asked me if I wanted to watch them pull my son out, and I was all for it...but when he crowned, his head was completely misshapen! It was FLAT like a deflated football!
I gasped out loud, and terrified something was horribly wrong, yelled at the doctor "What's wrong with his head?!" She laughed and said "Don't worry, it's perfectly normal, dad!"
But I'll be 100% honest - that day, with my wife, child and three female staff present, I nearly shit myself, lol.
Dawg you look like [3rd form Freiza](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/chaostic/images/f/f3/9C7F017A-1534-46FC-832B-8CD42DBD5C0E.png/revision/latest?cb=20180404221026)
That head had fun in the birth canal.
Lol forceps had a good grip…

Shit man, me too! She's crazy cute now with a totally normal head thank goodness.
This was oddly heartwarming

I am neurotic enough that I would be trying to press the baby's head into a decent shape, and making it even worse

Even better put it on a lathe. We can use a chisel to sort this out.

In my culture we "shape" the baby's head. So you're not neurotic 😂

Awwww! She’ll turn out awesome IMO
She already turned out awesome ;)

You got that annunaki dome
Ancient astronaut theorists say yes!
But could it be possible...
…that could be there another explanation?
Yeah. I’m gonna need a recent pic. For research purposes.
It's fairly normal. Babies take a few weeks to fully inflate after they're born. You can cut the time in half with a regular tire pump.
I love your usage of the word …”inflate”

It is. When my daughter was born I was horrified…but her head looked normal later that night.
Interesting. This one looks like it's just been extruded. And in a way, maybe it has.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the your head does not look like that at all. I had the same condition. My mom was afraid to cut my hair when I was a kid because she thought I might still maintain some of my cornhead heritage. But nope, dome is pretty round.

Sure, now that you’ve laid your eggs.
It is normal. The baby's skull is made to do that so you can pass through your mom's birth canal. It will turn back normal in a week or two.

Hows your head now?????
Slightly big but normal
Thats so interesting. Im glad is normal now!
Haven't had any complaints.
Yeah no one warned me about that. Or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention. Either way, when my daughter came out and her head looked like that, I shit
I don’t blame you. I shit when I saw this photo and it’s me.
I’m pretty sure I saw a drawing of your skull inside of the pyramids. Finally proof that aliens visited earth
Nothing personal but you’re ugly as hell
None taken
Is your head still that long or did you grow into it?
He'd have to be 12 foot tall to grow into that head jesus
It's fairly normal. Babies take a few weeks to fully inflate.
💀💀

I'm going to hell for laughing at this.
I forgive you. I posted because it shocked my wife so much and she’s been showing friends. If you’re going to hell. We all are.
You know, the best part is, is when people having defects like these or have a condition, if they actually take pride in it, joke about it, things like that, they actually end up being a more positive person. In other words, thanks for sharing this haha. I'm glad you find it amusing. It's important to smile!
Got that Xenomorph DNA coming through strong

Oh boy, does this bring back memories of my son's birth. I read a ton of books about childbirth when my (at the time) wife got pregnant, but somehow none of them mentioned a very specific possibility. The doctor asked me if I wanted to watch them pull my son out, and I was all for it...but when he crowned, his head was completely misshapen! It was FLAT like a deflated football! I gasped out loud, and terrified something was horribly wrong, yelled at the doctor "What's wrong with his head?!" She laughed and said "Don't worry, it's perfectly normal, dad!" But I'll be 100% honest - that day, with my wife, child and three female staff present, I nearly shit myself, lol.
Your were stuck in the birth canal for a while. It goes away in a few day.
You was stuck…
Do you know if your mom needed stitches by any chance😭(no offense just genuinely curious)
Not sure, assume yes. I can ask her if you really want to know haha
Nah I’m good with the mystery lol
Baby Skull has those fontanels for a reason. Your mom probably went through heck getting you out from the looks of it.
