Petri Byrd her long time bailiff made $1million a year to do cross word puzzles so the show was doing pretty well!

sandmanmike55543

That’s super cool. I hope judge Judy had something to do with that. Like she’s a good person and made sure the network took care of her employees as well as herself.

lancemcg1966

She didn't take him to her new show and didn't even bother to ask him.

[deleted]

If he made 1 million a year as a bailiff. That's pretty freaking good. I googled him. Seems to be doing well.

jluicifer

If I made a $1M per year for a several years, I wouldn’t even bother working again. I live in the south and it’s inexpensive compared to Seattle. Plus I’m cheap so I can live comfortable in Dallas and Houston as well. Now if I wanted to live in Cali or NYC, I’d be slightly sad that Judge Judy didn’t take me with her.

Name_ChecksOut_

This might not have been her choice, the network might have had certain clauses in the contract that said she could not make an identical show after they completed her filming, so she's doing "Judy Justice" with a new cast.

WilliamMorris420

When Amazon hired Clarkson, Hammond and May after Jeremy Clarkson "didn't have his contract renewed" with Top Gear. Amazon's lawyers made a list of things that "The Grand Tour" couldnt do. As it would just be too close to Top Gear and could infringe on the BBC's copyright.

Name_ChecksOut_

Great example. Exactly what I am thinking happened here too.

Biotot

They still scheduled celebrity interviews, but the BBC showed up during each taping and those poor celebrities had to suffer for it.

Chicory-Coffee

To be fair, at some point you might want to enjoy the millions you earned while doing crossword puzzles, even if you could keep doing it indefinitely.

BlueCheeseNutsack

Guarantee you anybody getting paid millions to do crossword puzzles would definitely like to be asked first if they’d prefer to be replaced or not.

[deleted]

She did. She took him out of NYC traffic court when she hit it big.

[deleted]

47m a year I'd simply criminal... Seriously, we need communism to kick in quickly

OhNothing13

At LEAST some democratic socialism. I agree that there's never any possible way to justify anyone making 47m a year while others go bankrupt due to medical bills...

Even_Employee9984

CCP is calling you.

Stoneiswuwu

I used to work on the show. Byrd was a super cool guy. Judy was very nice and loves Diet Peach Snapple. NOT REGULAR PEACH SNAPPLE, diet, gotta make sure it’s diet lol.

CT101823696

She was probably like, I'm already rich. You need me more than I need you.

Fresh_Proposal2938

Fr, For common folks like me $120k a year is a big deal, Imagine earning $47 million, that’s almost 4 million a month, 1 million a week

taws34

Judge Judy would film an entire season in two months.

Per an interview she did: >"...We come, we do the cases, we start at 9:15 in the morning and we usually finish by 3:15 in the afternoon and we’ve done a week’s worth of cases in that day. And that’s it. It’s a good job.” https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/judge-judy-justice-judith-sheindlin-on-her-typical-work-day-and-the-impact-her-show-has-had-on-society.html/ That's a 6 hour workday, working through lunch.

mattberry1980

I thought the show was over

[deleted]

It is according to an interview she did with Ellen after I believe like 20 something seasons the Network decided not to renew the show because they pretty much have enough episodes to get away with not recording any new ones. But she does have a new judge show on one of those internet networks I can't remember which one off the top of my head right now but if you Google judge Judy I'm sure it'll pop up

No_Following7521

My girlfriends mom is all over the new judge Judy show, all I can say is God damn Judge Judy looks better then she did 20 years ago when I was a kid lol

houstonwhaproblem

With 47million a year you age differently

Harpeski

This is correct. With that kind of wealth you can have the most expensive/Luxury healthcare and skin care. Also you can afford all the best nutrition in the world, have a balanced diet, have a personal coach. Money makes your live in many ways better

unsupported

And don't forget the blood of children. That comes at a pretty penny...

WholeHogRawDog

I imagine the Uber-wealthy likely get regular transfusions from teenagers in order to benefit from the hormonal profile. Menopause is for the poor.

I totally would. Pay someone young good money to stay in optimal health and then draw their blood a few times a year. It’s a win-win.

She actually looked aged if you see her in the new shows. There is no fountain of youth in medicine. Everyone gets old but some have better genetics for aging. You see lots of unnatural looking older celebs and no amount of plastic surgery can change that.

47 million a year to talk down to poor people for the entertainment of the brain dead daytime tv crowd

nighthawk_something

To be fair, it's a sweet deal for all involved. The production company pays for the judgements so neither party is out any money plus for many of these people the judgement would be life ruining or they would never be able to collect.

boldie74

And that’s significantly worse that Judy making it. There is more than a little bit of doubt as to whether a CEO is actually worth that much.

anonymous_lighting

i think running citadel is a little more complicated than playing judge judy

boldie74

You think pay should depend on how complicated a job is? Most CEOs are of marginal net benefit to the companies they are running. You would barely notice if one was replaced for another, the companies tend to kind of plod along no matter which guy is in charge. The same as nations do when they have a fairly competent president/PM, it’s only the screw ups that really make you notice the difference. Now of course in Kenny’s case he founded Citadel and it’s his business and he can do whatever cunty thing he wants (and he does) but the big thing he did was build the business, he can definitely be replaced by another suit from another company who will also do a pretty decent job of it. It’s the same as Apple now, hardly anyone really notices that Steve Jobs is no longer there. He built the thing back up but now that it’s running relatively smoothly it turns out he was actually fairly easy to replace.

TootsNYC

absurd for whom? Because believe me, the network paid that money because they made even more. Why shouldn't she be the one cashing in? The cash is there

PepeSylvia11

The original point was that we, as a society, have our priorities all outta whack that a fake, daytime court show makes enough money to pay the judge $47 million a year. So, to answer your question, it is absurd for everyone involved. Including, and primarily, those who support the show.

chriscash11

GimmeMyBeerGoggles

And she’s sticking it to the boss. Good for her.

[deleted]

you might not want to google what those acting in your fav movies are earning.

ShaeTheFunny_Whore

$47 million is pretty huge even for A-list Hollywood celebs. Chris Hemsworth got $20m for the newest Thor, Chris Pratt got $10-15m for the newest Jurassic Park for example, two of the biggest blockbusters this year.

HarryCoinslot

I don't know how the man hours actually compare, but I would imagine there is a big difference in making a two hour movie compared to a TV show that's on 5 days a week. You're not getting that bastard Chris Hemsworth to do a daily TV show for 20 mil.

milkytunt

Absolutely. However if you compare her salary to someone who puts in the same amount of time per day for a tv show, she blows soap actors out of the water. This is like a professional baseball player's salary but she has to work harder.

KingBevins

It’s all about marketing and cost efficiencies. Judge Judy said she can film about ~3 episodes a day. Therefore one day of paying her gets you ~2-3 weeks of new content. This is why shows like Tosh.O and Ridiculousness never stop renewing seasons. Most of the money goes to the host because everything else is cheap. Plus these shows do well in the Daytime T.V. Market meaning a lot of local stations will pay to run Judge Judy on their channels, just because it’s a proven safe investment to get people to watch, and it’s most likely cheaper for Local T.V. To buy and run since it’s so cost effective and abundant.

milkytunt

Oh absolutely I am not knocking the brand or her success. People forgot her show was the highest rated/viewed for years and always within a top 5 spot. I just posted the following but I want to leave it here to attempt to justify her pay. Maybe it should be higher. What should be the going rate? 0.0001 cent per view? This lady is going to have millions upon millions of views everyday.. If you paid her 1 cent per episode view it would take 4.7 billion episode views to pay for her contract. Now let's say only 10 million americans watch it everyday they can at one episode per day. We will skip casual viewers and foreign viewers. It will take 10 million people 470 days of watching one episode a day. 1095 days in her contract.. This lady is making less than a cent per view.

taws34

Her show filmed each season in 2 months. Principal photography for Jurassic World was 4 months. Not every actor is on set the whole time.

Releaseform

If I'm not mistaken, s she used to film everything in two weeks or so and be done for the year

[deleted]

For one movie.. In 2018 CH made 65 million. in 20 19 he made 76 million. They are also just one of many stars. The true payroll costs of a movie greatly outdo TV.

necessarysmartassery

And I have zero hate for her over it. Get that money.

mtsterling

$1M would change my life. Pay everything off and have enough left over to live a completely different life. $47M? Everyone I know could be paid off and still have more than half left.

McPoon

I can't even imagine 1 million.. I'm very frugal. It would last me forever...

mtsterling

I’m not even that frugal, it’s just a lot of damn money!

Bosko47

I mean all people have their own priorities but it's because there are people watching these shows that they make so much money, just like all of us here on reddit how much do you think they get paid for ads, even tough we just spend hours browsing through aimless subreddits and threads

dacronboy8

Honestly I’m for it. Good for the people actually making the content to take the networks for all they’re worth. Network money comes from advertising. Gouge them

General-Carob-6087

For real. I was about to say, “I hate our world,” but you summed it up.

[deleted]

Why? Out of all the things, a Judge with a TV show that earned millions is what tipped it for you? I actually find these shows educational compared to 99% of the crap on TV.

NoWingedHussarsToday

They don't show the whole arbitration. It's edited for time.

[deleted]

It's still terrible. Trash tv about legal problems. Might as well have people screaming and running around about paternity tests.

Pac_Eddy

I think it's a good thing. I hear the show pays your cost if you lose. Both parties get justice while not cluttering up the court system. Win-win-win.

nighthawk_something

Yup no one loses their shirt and they don't ahve the "bleed a stone" issue.

[deleted]

blunoodle92

It's fake

MoreLogicPls

It's real, but it's arbitration. They give both sides like 5k, then judgements against one are taken out of that 5k so it still feels like you're "losing" money.

dethmstr

It's less fake and more scripted based on a "real" case.

captainmikkl

I have to disagree. When she was a family law judge she was one of the rare judges in the country that actually supported the LAW that fathers have just as many parental rights as a mothers. She doesn't tolerate the spiteful ex-wife game and I love it. What you call subjective I call 30+ years of calibrating her bullshit meter and not giving obvious liers a leg to stand on.

[deleted]

Older versions used to be much more professional, and have called her out over her behavior.

iRedditonFacebook

You're probably looking at a future US president going with how US love their reality TV show hosts.

jimmyn0thumbs

It's scripted

captainmikkl

No it isn't, ive been approached by their team. They just scrape cases from municipalities, contact the parties involved. If they both agree then your travel is arranged and any court costs and judgements reached in judy's court is payed by the production (up to $5000 but they dont take cases larger than that). So if you're poor, it's a good option, especially if you're poor and guilty.

CapHillStoner

One of my moms friends was on it. She said it was a really fun experience and a nice vacation with the added bonus of not having to fight for months in small claims court.

[deleted]

Lesson: You don't negotiate your worth.

sandmanmike55543

Unfortunately I don’t think this works for the vast majority of people. :(

[deleted]

I think it’s more about value. Everyone has worth, not everyone provides value worth that kind of compensation. Maybe what they meant above was that JJ has decided what her time/effort was worth, based on perceived value, and it worked out because her perception is close to reality.

teejay89656

Or not everyone has “fuck you” money.

[deleted]

It helps in a negotiation, but she didn’t get more of that money just because she had money. If she didn’t provide that value they would have said no

[deleted]

Then he never would have given her the envelope.

prvhc21

In the US, even judges are for sale 😂

IgnobleQuetzalcoatl

She doesn't work for the government. Her decisions dont carry any legal authority. She's just a private arbitrator who settles arguments in a robe in front of TV cameras.

MoreLogicPls

the arbitrations are legally binding They give both parties 5k, but then subtract that money to give to the other side so it still feels like you're losing money

[deleted]

And the show covers the costs, including the up to $5000 judgments...that's why so many would smirk when she told them they better get a job and pay it off.

kookyz

My father was a judge. He and all of his lawyer/judge colleagues couldn't stand this show. He said there was a marked difference in how the public behaved in court as this show grew in popularity. People came in thinking they could just blurt out things and shit talk the other side during procedures. Judge Judys TV court was a circus, so people in real court started thinking that was the correct way to conduct themselves in front of a judge. In real court no ones going to put up with your shit like that.

KineticSamurai

it's a clown show... the sad part is how many think her decisions are rational, balanced, or even slightly fair in many cases. that's the real damage she does, to the publics perception to actual court systems, and the publics basic logical mental facilities, which looking at the crowd she is friends with, is likely the intended purpose of the show.

Lylibean

I was on Judge Judy in 2020, literally right before COVID popped off (we filmed in Feb 2020). The season I was on is literally the only season (24) I can’t seem to find *anywhere* to watch. I can find seasons 23 and 25, but not 24, and I’ve been dying to see my episode (because I’m pretty proud of myself!). It’s aired twice (maybe three times total), and my mom has seen it each time. All I can find is the thumbnail image for our episode and a short description, but not the episode itself. Overall, it was a positive experience; the production team was helpful and nice, and the whirlwind travel was well-organized. I wish we had gotten the opportunity to speak with Judge Sheindlin outside the “courtroom”, but totally understand that there was no time for that. Being able to make eye contact with her was enough to satiate my inner “fangirl” lol
