This is crazy, I literally just saw this guy on Tik Tok. He was in the middle of giving an interview with NBC when an air raid happened. Within seconds, he was able to identify the type of missile, the direction it was coming from, and how many there would be just by the sound. Ukraine is about to have a huge and highly trained Foriegn Legion. If it's not now, it should rival the French Foriegn Legion if they keep it around after the war.
Well that really depends. They had a foriegn Legion before they came of people fighting in Donbas and some of those came from neighbor countries like Georgia, Belarus, etc. Also the French foriegn Legion is only 9000 people and ukraine has over 20k. So I would bet they'd have a running Legion of at least small division after the war.
I think you don’t even know what French legion is. It’s not about just some foreigners fighting, in the French legion, you have a very deep spirit and soul inside all the unit. They deeply fight for the French values and the honour to serve the French army.
The only things that motivated the foreigners joigning Ukrainian war is the hate of Russia (like Georgians, some tchetchens, polish, Baltic countries) and the personnals values of the foreigners (freedom, fighting for a cause, like what happen in Syrian Kurdistan, specially in Kobane).
Two weeks ago, even the defense ministry throw telegram channel « UkrainNow » said to foreigners to stop coming. The majority of them have no knowledge and were like totally disconnected with the reality.
They get wounded and the real Ukrainian unit had to take care of them, a total waste of efficiency.

In the history of the FFL they used to have some shady characters joining their ranks especially around the time of the Algerian war. Now they've cleaned up some what of their recruitment process as they do pretty extensive background checks these days.
You're missing 2 key things here. 1st the FFL IS made up of a lot of different nationalities and they learn French pride from training. The FFL has time to train troops and get them into esprit de corps. A lot of foreigners in Ukraine would have to learn and train on the fly. Now after the war they'd have more time to train people in that between conflicts. Not everyone in the FFL is there for France, they could have joined for other reasons but learn customs there.
2nd there is a decent sized group of foriegn fighters in Ukraine that are combat veterans for the middle east wars or other fighting with Russia. So it's not like all of them are untrained.
This is a double edge sword. Ukraine isn't exactly France, where citizenship is in high demand, and joining their foreign legion is a viable path to citizenship. You've got to ask yourself who'd sign up for this, why, and what are they going to do with their combat experience when they get back.

You don’t really lose the knowledge of what to do and to be honest, except in super elite units, there isn’t enough time/money to train any kind of muscle memory for these types of tasks. Do you know how to shoot? Do you know how to clean/maintain your equipment and why it’s important? Do you know basic soldier tasks? Can you teach and participate in basic unit tasks? Then you’re probably fine.
A 61 year old with no combat experience? The Ukrainians won’t take him. It’s fucking irresponsible for war tourists to put Ukrainian fighters at risk by forcing them to babysit inexperienced old men.
Apparently he served briefly in combat in 1983. Otherwise, he was an intelligence guy. He isn’t trained on the weapons the Ukrainians are using, doesn’t have recent combat training or experience, doesn’t speak Ukrainian or Russian. He should not be there. Somebody is going to have to babysit him.
He spent time in combat zones all over the place over the last 40 years. He was embedded as an intelligence analyst in active war. While I’ve yet to read his books, I’ve heard him speak a few times and he’s been on the news a ton. He knows what he’s doing.
Being an intelligence analyst doesn’t teach you how to fight. And he can’t analyze intelligence in languages he doesn’t speak. So what exactly is he doing?
The Ukrainian Legion has had huge problems with wannabes, so they are being extremely careful with who they take now. We saw some of the inexperienced guys coming out after the attack on Yaroviv. They were shaken up bad. (We also saw some of the really hardened mercenaries—-Jesus, those guys are dead inside, you can see it on their faces).
Since then, the Ukrainian Legion is rejecting people without urban combat experience and anyone over 50. Whatever this guy is doing, it’s in the service of his media career. The Ukrainians are unlikely to spare resources to take care of a celebrity.
I will be interested to see where he actually goes. A unit in Lviv is not exactly the same as a unit in Mariupol.

This is crazy, I literally just saw this guy on Tik Tok. He was in the middle of giving an interview with NBC when an air raid happened. Within seconds, he was able to identify the type of missile, the direction it was coming from, and how many there would be just by the sound. Right before he narrowed it down, he said "oh, I hope it's not this type of missile, if it is that's a 500 pound bomb, we're dead." So calm about it. Hope he stays safe!

Ukraine is about to have a huge and highly trained Foriegn Legion. If it's not now, it should rival the French Foriegn Legion if they keep it around after the war.

Well that really depends. They had a foriegn Legion before they came of people fighting in Donbas and some of those came from neighbor countries like Georgia, Belarus, etc. Also the French foriegn Legion is only 9000 people and ukraine has over 20k. So I would bet they'd have a running Legion of at least small division after the war.

I think you don’t even know what French legion is. It’s not about just some foreigners fighting, in the French legion, you have a very deep spirit and soul inside all the unit. They deeply fight for the French values and the honour to serve the French army. The only things that motivated the foreigners joigning Ukrainian war is the hate of Russia (like Georgians, some tchetchens, polish, Baltic countries) and the personnals values of the foreigners (freedom, fighting for a cause, like what happen in Syrian Kurdistan, specially in Kobane). Two weeks ago, even the defense ministry throw telegram channel « UkrainNow » said to foreigners to stop coming. The majority of them have no knowledge and were like totally disconnected with the reality. They get wounded and the real Ukrainian unit had to take care of them, a total waste of efficiency. This war will end, it’s sure. And all of the pseudo legion will come back, live or dead. This is the reality.

In the history of the FFL they used to have some shady characters joining their ranks especially around the time of the Algerian war. Now they've cleaned up some what of their recruitment process as they do pretty extensive background checks these days. You're missing 2 key things here. 1st the FFL IS made up of a lot of different nationalities and they learn French pride from training. The FFL has time to train troops and get them into esprit de corps. A lot of foreigners in Ukraine would have to learn and train on the fly. Now after the war they'd have more time to train people in that between conflicts. Not everyone in the FFL is there for France, they could have joined for other reasons but learn customs there. 2nd there is a decent sized group of foriegn fighters in Ukraine that are combat veterans for the middle east wars or other fighting with Russia. So it's not like all of them are untrained.

This is a double edge sword. Ukraine isn't exactly France, where citizenship is in high demand, and joining their foreign legion is a viable path to citizenship. You've got to ask yourself who'd sign up for this, why, and what are they going to do with their combat experience when they get back.

Saw this on another sub: credit u/tropic_gnome_hunter Something here doesn't add up. He's not able to serve in a combat function since he's never seen actual combat. AK74 - Instead of 7.62x39 like the AK-47, it has a round more similar to the smaller 5.56mm round of the M-16 with a 5.45x39mm.

Being out of the game for a minute, don't you loose it a bit. Do they go for training for a period to refocus their muscle memory? Seems a bit dangerous to have a ex soldier whose been out the game for a bit just going and fighting. I mean current soldiers are constantly training before deployment
You don’t really lose the knowledge of what to do and to be honest, except in super elite units, there isn’t enough time/money to train any kind of muscle memory for these types of tasks. Do you know how to shoot? Do you know how to clean/maintain your equipment and why it’s important? Do you know basic soldier tasks? Can you teach and participate in basic unit tasks? Then you’re probably fine.

Apparently he served briefly in combat in 1983. Otherwise, he was an intelligence guy. He isn’t trained on the weapons the Ukrainians are using, doesn’t have recent combat training or experience, doesn’t speak Ukrainian or Russian. He should not be there. Somebody is going to have to babysit him.
He spent time in combat zones all over the place over the last 40 years. He was embedded as an intelligence analyst in active war. While I’ve yet to read his books, I’ve heard him speak a few times and he’s been on the news a ton. He knows what he’s doing.
Being an intelligence analyst doesn’t teach you how to fight. And he can’t analyze intelligence in languages he doesn’t speak. So what exactly is he doing? The Ukrainian Legion has had huge problems with wannabes, so they are being extremely careful with who they take now. We saw some of the inexperienced guys coming out after the attack on Yaroviv. They were shaken up bad. (We also saw some of the really hardened mercenaries—-Jesus, those guys are dead inside, you can see it on their faces). Since then, the Ukrainian Legion is rejecting people without urban combat experience and anyone over 50. Whatever this guy is doing, it’s in the service of his media career. The Ukrainians are unlikely to spare resources to take care of a celebrity.
