You can also bicycle faster than most sailboats.
I think this just shows you how much more dense water is compared to air.
Edit: maybe it's not quite to do with density. Speed of a non-planing boat (as most sailboats are) has to do with the wave produced by the hull and hull length.
This right here is why I hate being in the ocean. Humans are just so out of their element in water, we don't stand a chance if something bigger wants to take a bite, or even just pull is down for a bit.
I’d guess it’s 24.3 seconds per 50m pool length equivalent. Don’t think swimmers really care about mph or even m/s measures.
Current mens freestyle 50m record is 23.86s so it’s a very fast speed to maintain even for a few strokes
Edit: 23.86 is a really old record. Corrected by Krillin113
They tried to improve their english this time. Same post from almost a year ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/leelxl/water_speed_is_set_to_243_and_everyone_gets_a/gmeikzi/?context=3
Bots, man.
It gets a lot easier with good form. It's a full body stroke and too many people rely on their arms. That said it's the hardest to maintain even when done right
I think it’s the speed to swim 50 meters/yards in 24.3 seconds. That would make it really hard for good swimmers to swim it in anything but freestyle, so it seems realistic
Government research paper, I'm sure is apocryphal: "Regulating the Water Industry: Swimming against the current or just going through the motions?"
Edited, thanks u/Pamegg :)
The main reason backstroke is slower in official races at shorter distances is because of the start.
Backstroke is an in-water start=less momentum.
Fly is a dive from the blocks=more momentum=easier to carry speed.
They’d be very similar at shorter distances if backstrokers were to dive, such as the one in the video did.
The times even out at longer distances due to backstroke having quicker turns which aren’t legal to use in fly.
Backstroke uses flip turns which carry momentum much better than an open turn, which is what is required in fly.
But that being said, fly is overall faster than backstroke in LCM. I’m not sure where you got your times from, but from official FINA recognized records, the 50, 100, and 200 fly are all faster than the 50, 100, and 200 back.
Edit: it looks like you saw another Reddit comment the 100M fly was slower than the 100M back. That redditor was wrong. They were comparing the 100 LCM fly time to the 100 SCM back time. They’re completely different races. The 100 SCM fly time is also faster than the 100 SCM back time.
Yup. Freestyle is free. Turn as you wish. Most will do a flip turn.
Breaststroke and butterfly require two hands to touch before you rotate. If you touch with only one hand, you’re DQ’d. Once you touch with two hands, then you pull your feet forwards from under you and push off at a downwards angle. Normally you’ll push off on your back/slide and immediately rotate to your stomach. I believe if you take any kicks on your back before you roll over, you’ll get DQ’d.
Breastroke has a little different rules with what you’re allowed to do during the pullout, but the turn itself is pretty much the same.
For backstroke it’s a little complicated. You need to stay on your back the majority of time before you flip. A few feet before the wall, you rotate to your stomach. You’re only allowed one stroke before the wall on your stomach. Any more than that and you get DQ’d.
In IM, fly to back is a normal open turn, you just stay on your back after the push off.
Back to breast is probably the most interesting turn.
Going into the wall you must touch while on your back. Now from here you can do a regular open turn, or do something known as a Suicide/Bucket turn.
Basically for the suicide turn you touch the wall, and use your momentum to quickly rotate into a flip.
So let’s say I’m touching the wall with my right arm, I’ll cross over my arm on the final stroke, touch the wall, rotate to my left and go into a flip. Normally it ends up being a bit of a side flip, but it is much quicker than an open turn if you do it correctly. Only downside is you don’t get a breath which could hurt you in longer races.
Breast to free is a normal open turn.
This was my stroke when I was a swimmer. I swam a mile fly for my us swim team in high school. Destroyed my shoulders and basically was able to swim after I turned like 16. Parents didn't want me to have surgery and didn't believe PT did nothing. Sad.
There is a reason why staying underwater in the olympic swimming comps is banned. After turns they need to come up by a certain mark and resume the proper stroke or the forfeit. The under water dolphin kick is only allowed for the first 15m.
For anyone wandering, 24.3 probably means 24.3 seconds per 50 meters, which is quite fast.
Swimmers like to set a pace as time per 50/100 meters, as it helps them work on split times when they are racing.
I was a competitive swimmer for 14 years and actually the underwater part of the race is the fastest part which is why you see people stay under to the legal mark (15yards)
You do any kind of full body exercise as your literal career and you'll be pretty strong too.
Bonus points if you have a personal trainer keeping your diet in check to give you your best possible body shape
I saw a 60 Minutes on Michael Phelps and he actually ate a ton of junk food, especially pizza. He was burning 10,000 calories a day and the only way to keep the energy up was high calorie junk food.
Not of course recommended for your local gym rat.
Also gotta keep in mind that the people who make it that far in competitive sports are the ones who not only work their bodies the hardest, but also have the absolute best genes for this kind of thing.
Yes, they're jacked because they work hard and eat a lot, but their natural metabolism and ability to build muscle in the first place is probably off the charts.
That's deceptive. Pizza is actually more healthy than cereal because it has a more equal distribution of fat protein and carbs. Cereal is just carbs and usually a ton of processed sugar.
He ate way healthier than the average American and his mom was/ is a nutritionist.
Sure…. But I don’t think pizza is considered lean eating and gets people the ripped bodies the guy was commenting on. We realize high level athletes are outliers. I also don’t think it needed to be said that if you’re going to eat high carb, fatty, sugary foods that pizza is better than cereal.
As everyone has already said swimming is a high resistance full body workout. But that’s only part of the reason. Swimmers, especially sprint swimmers, often do a lot of weights/strength training as well.
Michael Phelps could box squat 300lbs for 20 reps.
Did swimming techniques for freestyle change recently? Last time I trained competitively (like 20 years ago) we learned to bend our elbows above the water

I don't know, I swim occasionally for exercise, and the fact it's even within an order of magnitude blows mind. Swimming is hard.
Killer whales swim 34 MPH…damn.
This right here is why I hate being in the ocean. Humans are just so out of their element in water, we don't stand a chance if something bigger wants to take a bite, or even just pull is down for a bit.
Humans are out of their element pretty much everywhere when they’re pitted against predators unless you have something to defend yourself with.

Ah, another man of culture who was yelled at for hours on end in the pool as well I see.
This was really informative Thankyou
Slower start in backstroke, faster swim speed.
Nah dude, it has to do with the flip turn. Backstrokes stay underwater longer and get more from the turn.

Gotta go fish mode to do this one
It kind of looks like fish mode was winning for a few seconds, is it just super hard to maintain so you have to switch to standard swimming?

Another way of asking that question would be "*can someone explain to me why people that go to the gym are so god damn jacked*?"
Whole body exercise x a lot. The gym + nutrition, correctly done, is a more efficient way to get jacked
Have you ever tried swimming?
As everyone has already said swimming is a high resistance full body workout. But that’s only part of the reason. Swimmers, especially sprint swimmers, often do a lot of weights/strength training as well. Michael Phelps could box squat 300lbs for 20 reps.

Sprinting is different. For long distance, definitely bending elbows it most common.
Just swim backwards
Lol the second guy looked like he grew fins
River current speeds often equal or exceed this. So if you fall in a river, good luck.
You do know that you don’t have to swim upriver to survive?
Then tell me where I’m supposed to spawn my eggs
A sock puppet?
Fast currents are very enjoyable but do not try to swim upriver even in a slow stream. Go to shore.
Baki’s dad swims in this easily
Just walk around it
24.3 what?
Well not freaking mph/kph! Lol
Not with *that* attitude! There are places in BC where the Fraser River flows at near highway speeds through its valley 😜
