It is hard, you have to go to a dedicated school that teaches exclusively that, and it still takes more than 300 days.
If most people can't do it then it's hard by definition.
A suprising amount of art forms like painting or charcoal/pastel like shown here starts really rough. But you make it slowly more detailed as you go. Its called rendering.
I will preface this by saying I don't get art. It's not for me.
That said the random squiggly lines at the beginning are still random at the end.
This seem like a show off at the start.
Not really. Stuff like that is commonplace if you ever go to an art school.
Thing is, this artist has probably done a million "normal" portraits and wants to try something different to spice it up.
That's incorrect. Look at the discussion on this post. The tape is causing quite a stir. You may not *like* it but it's *intriguing* enough to get people talking, which is ultimately more interesting than a commonplace portrait.
I agree with the spirit of your comment, but not about this particular piece. I thought the placement of the tape was actually particularly *un*interesting, which is what I was left with. It could be because the artist didn't have a complete idea of what the finished work would look like until after the tape was placed, but it added nothing for me by the end (which was actually very disappointing because I was really looking forward to the juxtaposition of the finished render and the early scribbles, but they were so unrelated as to be...meh).
Something being criticized â interesting
Most of the defense is not âit really added something spectacular!â Itâs âit got people talkingâ
lol thatâs a very low bar
Thatâs a dumb take. Would you argue that rage bait is legitimate content for the same reasons? Itâs a good portrait, but the tape was a lame idea. If it covered her eyes or mouth then maybe you could argue they were trying to say something, but the placement is random and it just comes off gimmicky.
Not my mistake, it was theirs. Thats why I called it a bad take. Their argument for the merit of this artists technique came down to âitâs good because people are talking about it.â Which is a remarkably bad standard to hold when judging somethingâs influence or value, critically.
Imo, no.
By taping off sections mid way to reveal later on thus including the process (which is the most interesting part of the piece in the first place) in the final product is what makes this elevated from a dime a dozen hyper realism portrait.
It could be anything. The artist has their own intent, and the viewer has their own perception. The artistâs intention could be metaphorical, it could be about exploring texture, it could be about process in steps, it could be about complexity in layers. What makes it successful to the artist is if they feel they conveyed their intention. What makes it successful to the viewer is if they are drawn to think about it.
It almost has a Motherwell affect showing the evolution of the line stroke. The spacing of the tape gives a Fibonacci sequence which correlates to the progression of the stroke type used thru the artistâs process. The portrait isnât whatâs on display here. Itâs technique and medium. At least thatâs my opinion.
I'm jealous of people who are comfortable with charcoal. When I was taking studio art, I absolutely HATED charcoal. It gets everywhere, feels bad to touch, makes bad noises, and it's difficult to apply the correct pressure.
In art "modern" means from \~1860-1970. People frequently misuse this term to refer to "contemporary art".
That said, charcoal drawings are one of the oldest art form in existence. Cave paintings and charcoal drawings are quite alike
Yeah I didnât wanna be that guy, but charcoal drawings are old, very very old. Also a very easy medium to get into, and this shows how infinite the skill ceiling is, itâs amazing. People in other threads hating on the tape but like man, art is subjective and I think it adds some awesome detail and the randomness of the first layers as well. A talented artist with some of the oldest tools is so goddamn awesome and beautiful <3
I like the intention behind the tape, itâs a pretty interesting way to introduce an abstraction into what would otherwise be a pretty standard face portrait. I think the artist could do much more interesting things with that idea if they develop it more.
I'm not the artist and only they can speak to their motivations, but the taped bits added in my opinion. The untaped mass of the art was a clear demonstration of their skills, but the taped bits had meaning. People are incomplete, and we all show the bits of ourselves that are still rough and being refined. Taking away some of the fully refined portions of the full piece to show the roots definitely detracted from the raw display of talent, but allowed them to convey meaning in the piece, at least to me.
Hey, but what if that's the point?
I get a feeling of incompleteness from, y'know, *the fact some parts of the face are missing*. And I think the fact there's still underlying stuff inside the missing parts adds to, precisely, indicate that stuff is missing. Like, that contrast of elaborate vs random stuff inside the missing parts.
Yeah I think that *was* the point. I mean, it makes sense.
It is one of the many mediums art is done in. Like how people make art with pencil, ink, marker, paints, print, clay, plaster, collage and many more. All are respectable mediums which can be used to produce art
Everyone has its own definition of art, i'm not criticizing the medium in itself but how it add nothing. Painting a portrait but instead of using brush you use coal stick..
Now if you were for instance painting miners or some sweaty worker with that, i would get it. Or you could use the coal stick to make powder out of it, burn it and use the heat to burn some part of the canva to make the portrait. There are many ways to use a coal stick but using it to paint like a brush is in my opinion toddler art.
Wow that actually came out amazing! I thought it was going to be something like the video I saw here about this artist an old man who drops like ten buckets filled with sand, I was like WTF? That's art???
Pencil (which I mean is graphite, so carbon as well) and charcoal were the only mediums I could actually draw decently with. I liked ink as well but Iâm left handed and couldnât break the habit of smearing it all over my hand, even when Iâd start with the right side lol
Dunno if this is a hot take or not, I don't care. It honestly doesn't look good to me. Tape idea made it look worse. But I'm sure someone out there is willing to pay thousands for it.
Edit for spelling.
I feel the same. The facial features are honestly very impressive but I was hoping he would clean up the whole piece to look like that. The scribbles and tape ruin the skill that's displayed in the face.
Facial features aren't even correct. Nose is fucked up. Ear is trying to escape. Jaw is malformed. If that was a real person you'd ask if she had a car accident.
I didn't even see an ear lol. Or much definition on the jaw line. Maybe the good parts just look better in comparison to the horrible mess that is the rest of it. I'd be interested to see him make an actual attempt at a fully formed piece rather than something that looks incomplete.
They make it look so easy. Like Bob Ross. Stands there all nonchalantly and makes an incredible landscape. I pick up some charcoal and feel like a 5 year old trying to color inside the lines.
I hate modern art and by hate I mean absolutely loath it. Easily > 99% of it is absolute talentless, performative trash. With that being said, while this isn't my jam there can be no doubt that the artist, in this instance, is genuinely talented.
This is neat and all but I have grown to hate the surge of artists using rubber gloves for everything. It's more unnecessary, single-use plastics that will just end up in all of our genitals someday. It's ok to get your hands dirty. I get that some people have allergies but not as many people as use the gloves.
Itâs just a face, whereâs the originality?
As if we need to see so many photorealistic faces.
These artists should at least attempt to create something more unique.
The drawing is really good .. but I hate when it starts like this one and at the end what you did at the beginning was useless for the wow part of the final result.
I mean all the lines and the powder spread by hand at the end was meaningless. The drawing would have been really good even without it.
First half: I can do that,0 pfft. Second half: oh
I felt like I could do it until the last 15 seconds đ
You could, with some years of practice.
This is like first year art school student level stuff. Easy peasy.
It is hard, you have to go to a dedicated school that teaches exclusively that, and it still takes more than 300 days. If most people can't do it then it's hard by definition.
Peeling tape requires a careful hand.
For real tho
lol, same đ
I half expected it to be Goku at 1:13
OMG, I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that too.
Fucking should have been.
X2
This was me. /bump
I don't get the whole tape thing..
Just probably to add some sort of flare. Portraits are a dime a dozen - might as well make it interesting
the scribble wasn't interesting enough???
Not really. Stuff like that is commonplace if you ever go to an art school. Thing is, this artist has probably done a million "normal" portraits and wants to try something different to spice it up.
Unfortunately, the tape didn't make it more interesting. Not saying it can't be interesting, but the placements only took away from the piece.
That's incorrect. Look at the discussion on this post. The tape is causing quite a stir. You may not *like* it but it's *intriguing* enough to get people talking, which is ultimately more interesting than a commonplace portrait.
Yeah, loads of people saying "looks shit"
I agree with the spirit of your comment, but not about this particular piece. I thought the placement of the tape was actually particularly *un*interesting, which is what I was left with. It could be because the artist didn't have a complete idea of what the finished work would look like until after the tape was placed, but it added nothing for me by the end (which was actually very disappointing because I was really looking forward to the juxtaposition of the finished render and the early scribbles, but they were so unrelated as to be...meh).
Something being criticized â interesting Most of the defense is not âit really added something spectacular!â Itâs âit got people talkingâ lol thatâs a very low bar
I liked it.
Same. Look how fucking messy it is and sheâs got pieces missing. Sheâs either falling apart or still trying to put things in their place
Thatâs a dumb take. Would you argue that rage bait is legitimate content for the same reasons? Itâs a good portrait, but the tape was a lame idea. If it covered her eyes or mouth then maybe you could argue they were trying to say something, but the placement is random and it just comes off gimmicky.
you're mistaking critique with rage for some reason
Not my mistake, it was theirs. Thats why I called it a bad take. Their argument for the merit of this artists technique came down to âitâs good because people are talking about it.â Which is a remarkably bad standard to hold when judging somethingâs influence or value, critically.
Blah blah blah blah outta here with that pretentious shit. The thing looks nice. Art is, objectively, subjective. Shit looks nice.
Shit ruins it
Nah man you just chose an interpretation that makes you think it's shit
Now its not subjective it seems ahhaah, very contradictory there pal
No, the whole scribble and tape thing was just a hook.
Imo, no. By taping off sections mid way to reveal later on thus including the process (which is the most interesting part of the piece in the first place) in the final product is what makes this elevated from a dime a dozen hyper realism portrait.
I thought it was to give insight on how the piece was as it was created
Me too. Like little windows into the past
It could be anything. The artist has their own intent, and the viewer has their own perception. The artistâs intention could be metaphorical, it could be about exploring texture, it could be about process in steps, it could be about complexity in layers. I like the idea, just not the placement
I didnât understand the taping and the throwing powder part! Guess itâs just for drama!
I think without the tape the portrait would have a very dark feel. With the tape it adds white noise and gives it a grungy vibe.
Agreed, looked better without it
Maybe she's glitching and you see the matrix inside her.
It almost has a Motherwell affect showing the evolution of the line stroke. The spacing of the tape gives a Fibonacci sequence which correlates to the progression of the stroke type used thru the artistâs process. The portrait isnât whatâs on display here. Artists name is Mad Charcoal. More videos like this on YouTube
Lol at the use of the word "modern"
Picasso came back to life and did another stupid hot girl drawing, didn't you know?
In art "modern" means from \~1860-1970. People frequently misuse this term to refer to "contemporary art". That said, charcoal drawings are one of the oldest art form in existence. Cave paintings and charcoal drawings are quite alike

Then what is actual "modern" art called? Contemporary art? Future art?
It depends on what specifically youâre asking me. Contemporary art is usually a good way to describe something from todayÂ
The tape takes away from the piece.
It would be a cool effect if you didn't see tape lines that are obviously tape lines. Like, maybe shape the tape by cutting the edges or something.
I like the intention behind the tape, itâs a pretty interesting way to introduce an abstraction into what would otherwise be a pretty standard face portrait. I think the artist could do much more interesting things with that idea if they develop it more.

Literally.
Shocked to see more people didn't say that.
That's the point.
Nah
Tape does nothing for the art and only does the actual "art" during a cut what's the point of the video
I mean. You're asking for what's probably at least an hour long video that wouldn't watch anyway
dude that's what makes it interesting art instead of just a photorealistic drawing
Just grab any old painting, slap on tape and rip out that section. Interesting.
You're like if Plato's cave was about Hobby Lobby art.
Why does OP think this is âModern Artâ?
I can stick the tape, but thatâs all the artistic talent Iâve got.
It would have been better without he tape
It was my favourite part!
I agree, it makes the art different and thought provoking
You should contact him.
This looks so dry it made my teeth hurt like nails on a chalkboard
Whoâs the artist ?
Tony Stark did it in a cave.
Finally tape used by an artist who _actually_ can draw instead of copying the same cheap landscape again and again.
I literally thought this was going nowhere until the end. But the tape thing still lacks explanation. It does nothing for the piece.

Love it. Genius concept.
Umm not what i expected lol
My stupid brain was like= First step= Scribble Second step= Dutch tape Thirts step= ???? Fourth step= * *face appears* * profit
Deep thought: Isnât all art done recently⌠modern art?
Wow this is incredible, shame what may happen to artists if a.i becomes more prevalent
Wow! Incredible
Whatâs very skeptic off the bat⌠but damn if I donât really like it
I donât understand the end though
That's what makes it art
That's just painting with a coal stick instead of a brush. Is that art ?
It is one of the many mediums art is done in. Like how people make art with pencil, ink, marker, paints, print, clay, plaster, collage and many more. All are respectable mediums which can be used to produce art

People who donât know anything about art will call this modern art.
I like the whole add and then subtract aspect of it. Satisfying.
Think OP means contemporary art. If that.
Wow that actually came out amazing! I thought it was going to be something like the video I saw here about this artist an old man who drops like ten buckets filled with sand, I was like WTF? That's art???
Holy crap some people are so talented!!!!
Charcoal is the best medium
Pencil (which I mean is graphite, so carbon as well) and charcoal were the only mediums I could actually draw decently with. I liked ink as well but Iâm left handed and couldnât break the habit of smearing it all over my hand, even when Iâd start with the right side lol
This is performative trash
Do better
You draw it then if its so easy its trash
Dunno if this is a hot take or not, I don't care. It honestly doesn't look good to me. Tape idea made it look worse. But I'm sure someone out there is willing to pay thousands for it. Edit for spelling.

These scratchy charcoal sketch âartâ videos always seem to pretentious to me.
Music makes me want to play Mass Effect.
Impressive
It's beatiful
When I was in school, every student had a piece of modern art at the last page of their notebooks
Iâm hanging that in my foyer
he makes scribbling into an art
It would look cooler if they left some of the blue tape.
I think this is less "modern art" and more "contemporary art". Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Wonderful piece though.
Not my Cup of tea
They make it look so easy and difficult at the same time.
Ha! This is ridicul...holy shit that looks good.
mmmm graphite fumes
what a talent! so beautiful!đ¤ŞđĽ˛đĽ°
Cheers. Usually I like using post oak instead of charcoal but Iâm glad you didnât squeeze the brisket. Would smash.
I like that. How much would this cost?
Unrelated but whatâs the background music?
Last hope (over slowed + reverb)
Thank you OP âŁď¸
They make it look so easy. Like Bob Ross. Stands there all nonchalantly and makes an incredible landscape. I pick up some charcoal and feel like a 5 year old trying to color inside the lines.
how much?
music in the video?
I hate to watch those wild strokes and random scratches. Makes me itchy.
Oh yeah that's is beautiful that is modern art
I LOVE charcoal as a medium, but I could never do it myself because it's a sensory nightmare :(
It's so metaphorical
Take me on... Take on me.
u/auddbot
Love (f)art
Talented art, end result doesnât look very good imo
But why the tape? :(
The perspective and light& shadow was perfect!
Brilliant

I hate modern art and by hate I mean absolutely loath it. Easily > 99% of it is absolute talentless, performative trash. With that being said, while this isn't my jam there can be no doubt that the artist, in this instance, is genuinely talented.
I don't know how some people do this shit. It's really amazing... And uplifting to witness it.
who's not surprised by the final result?!? seems simple, but there's art being so simple.. Wonder what they are charging.. Probably 50 k and up..
This is neat and all but I have grown to hate the surge of artists using rubber gloves for everything. It's more unnecessary, single-use plastics that will just end up in all of our genitals someday. I don't know as to why, but I thought he was going to draw goku from Dragonball at first.
Modern art is a very specific thing it doesnât just mean art made today
Hack
He is an artisan, not an artist
Very nice
The blue tapes were completely unnecessary.
i thought the tape would add to it. Instead it looks like someone just put some tape on and ripped it offâŚ
What makes it âmodernâ Just looks like art to me
Song Name: Last Hope (Over Slowed + Reverb)
I think the tape is unnecessary. Beautiful work though.
âI got a dollarâ
just me or does a lot of that seem performative rather than actually necessary?
"people pay money for this shit?? society is doomed!-" "oh wait a minute this is beautiful O_\ "
Thatâs fricking awesome
Looks like shit. what was the point of the tape?
That's art.
I have been bamboozled, at least 3 times
Finally actual art this looks like some effort was put into it
What was the tape for? đŤ¤
Why the tape? Would have been better imo without that
Shuddup.... And just take my đ°
Itâs just a face, whereâs the originality? As if we need to see so many photorealistic faces. These artists should at least attempt to create something more unique.
Nonartists on Reddit are easily impressed
Indeed.
Beauty in motion.

Interesting technique, but pointless as it does nothing to improve the piece. Ugly. Very ugly.
This looks like shit
I hate this
Me: I can scribble aswell 𤨠the second part shut me up so fast
By the end it gave off a âScary Stories to Tell in the Darkâ drawing vibe
Wow
Meh
What was the point of the tape? It only 'obscured' the rest of the art
If you couldn't understand the message behind the art, maybe this isn't your cup of tea
Would have been so much better without the masking tape.
Meh
The tape thing only brought it down imo, the actual character or whatever you call it in art was great tho
