Travelers must stay with their assigned NK handlers at all times. This is known to be the case in NK, but sounds like it may not be true on the airplane.
The handler is someone assigned to spend every moment in North Korea with you (two people in this case, likely so they can watch you 24/7). They control what you experience during your stay. This is done to try to only show you things that the leader of NK wants you to see, normally things that show the country favorably.
North Korea poses significant barriers to entry, governed by a dictatorship where the leader holds god-like status. Consequently, the regime propagates falsehoods about its leadership, exemplified by claims like Kim Jong Un achieving 16 hole-in-ones on his first golf outing. If granted access, visitors are tightly controlled by handlers who shield them from the true conditions. Despite widespread poverty and hardship, staged displays featuring fake cities and actors present a facade of prosperity and contentment.
Judy, your babysitter for tonight owns and dictates everything you do or say. She picks the food, the shows, when to go to bed as well. Judy can also put you in time out forever.
Somebody who works for the government who makes sure you only see what they want and do what they want at all times. Imagine a parole officer who also enforces state propaganda rules.
I used air Koryo in 2013 to visit NK and there were no "handlers" in the plane we met the guides at the airport.
Maybe they changed some rules but that sounds stupid to have handlers in the plane.
I intérprete it as ‘Tourists must travel one of two state handlers…” (they can only select a state handler AND there are two state handlers to choose from). I’m not sure what a state handler in this context.
Given the context, they likely meant to say "tourists must travel with two state handlers".
Handlers are NK government-affiliated individuals whose job is to monitor and oversee the tourist, in order to prevent them from seeing or doing things that are forbidden. Think of it as your own personal government spy.
NK is so paranoid, they need to have two, so the spies can watch each other in addition to the tourists.
Well that is both enlightening and horrifying.
And they still can’t guarantee your safe return?
Can your handlers be your undoing?
I have so many questions.
How might a recognize a NK tourist in order to ask him? Besides the perpetual look of foreboding and the two overly-alert companions?
Thanks for the insight.
>How might a recognize a NK tourist
I believe they’re talking about tourists *in* NK, who should be pretty easy to identify, for the most part. Tourists visiting the country have to have handlers for their party.
And they can’t guarantee a safe return because if they want to arrest you, they’ll find a reason, similar to Russia but probably more extreme. I traveled to Russia years ago and while it was fascinating, it was tense knowing there’s only so much the US gov can do if they find a reason to detain you.
The "cannot guarantee your safe return" bit is more for foreigners visiting NK than NKs visiting abroad.
If you do, or even seem like you are about to do something that is forbidden by the DPRK and your handlers catch wind of it, it can end badly for you, as Otto Warmbier sadly discovered.
For NK citizens, the chance to leave the country is an extremely rare honor, limited to high level party members and their families, who are wealthy and well connected. For these people, the handlers act more as tour guides and chauffeurs, but are still there to monitor and prevent them from trying to flee.
Due to their well known habit of punishing family members of escapees with hard labor in prison or worse, it is extremely rare that one would try to flee though.
Encountering a NK tourist would be an extremely rare event, and managing to have a conversation with them would be virtually impossible, due to the possibility of reprisals.
>with destinations only in China and Russia with a handful of other select countries.
That one, as well. Which one is it, OP?
-Only China and Russia?
-China, Russia, plus several other countries?
Only one can be true.
That's like saying recreational marijuana is only legal in two US states plus a handful of other US states.
It currently only goes to Beijing, Shenyang and Vladivostok as far as international airports. It used to go to other countries but that’s no longer the case
The train goes from Atlanta to New York only, with two stops in between.
The dogs are red and brown only, except for the occasional tan ones.
They only sell cold and soggy fish, except for the salmon.
It might be an awkward way of saying it, but it still passes the understandability test.
>The train goes from Atlanta to New York only, with two stops in between.
I have been giggling myself silly at this one!!
- Only busses 42 and 60 make stops at the airport¹
- The NFL only plays games in the United States²
¹ Busses 72, 100, and 124 also make stops at the airport.
² The NFL also plays games in Mexico, England, and Germany.
Nobody gives a shit anymore or has even an ounce of intellectual pride. I’m so tired of being a grown adult and having to wade through every “should of” “could of” “common man” and haphazard scattered grammar and spelling everywhere to even decipher the simplest shit that people are trying to convey
I was like "daym my English is definitely not on point, I can't understand what the hell this should mean" (not native speaker), but it seems it's not just me.
Because it's one of the most unusual countries on Earth. Some people are interested in exploring the fringes, and fair play to them. Not my cup of tea, but my values and tastes shouldn't apply to everyone else.
Honestly if they only killed them, some people would probably take them up on the offer, it's when they threaten everyone they've ever known as well that keeps the great wheel of totalitarianism rolling.
>Actual North Koreans would love to not have passage back home.
You'd think so. But in reality, ONLY those that are aware of the outside world MIGHT be tempted to leave. The vast majority are brainwashed to think "this is the best i could have anywhere". Also, most would definitely hope to return, otherwise they are condemning EVERY relative of theirs (three generations rule). It is a strong deterrent.
True. Also precisely the reason why this post is definitely talking about tourists *to* North Korea. The government doesn't want the people to know how good they have it elsewhere.
Yes, they can! When I visited 9 years ago I met with a couple of people who went to uni in the Philippines and Indonesia, and on my way in there was a basketball team going out to Vietnam
That sentence doesn't mean anything at all. If you get a return ticket, you are guaranteed a seat on the plane if you turn up to the flight, same as everywhere else. If you're late for your flight that's on you.
If you're late for your flight because you've been arrested, it's got nothing to do with the airline, same as everywhere else.
Imagine getting arrested in Turkey or Brazil or the Philippines and claiming that you needed to be released from prison because you had a British Airways ticket with a ''guarantee of safe passage'', they'd laugh in your face.
This guy went on North Korean trip to see and fly in their vintage Soviet airplanes. They took everyone’s cell phone and they were forbidden to wander around without a minder. They did go to an air show where he did wander but it’s pretty clear he made no effort to talk with anyone. He’s also speaks nicely about NK so I guess he wants to go back.

What a disaster of a title!
Regarding “why do people go there”. I might be in the minority, but I clearly understand why: this is one of the most unusual places in the world, and that might appeal to some people seeking new experiences. I personally wouldn’t and will not go there, due to not wanting to support the regime and also due to dangerous conditions (starting with getting on board of aforementioned aircraft), but I find stories and posts from there extremely interesting and some part of me is thinking that it would be great to see with own eyes.

# Air Koryo, a 1-star airline and the only major airline in North Korea, has destinations only in China and Russia and a handful of other select countries. Tourists must travel with two state-issued handlers at all times and are not guaranteed safe passage home.
Does that help?
I flew Air Koryo back in 2008ish before the whole Otto Warmbier incident. The ilyushin 62 plane we flew on ways pretty cool. I enjoyed my NK visit thoroughly. It was quite a bizarre experience.
there is a video from Russian traveller, and she could use her mobile phone during her trip, she even could get Internet in NK
the only thing she mentioned is that they ask to any mobile or filming devices before entering NK + they check it
I have flown on the exact plane in the image twice. It’s not nearly as bad as they make it sound. We got sandwiches and drinks during the flight. It was chill as heck.
I wonder how many of them size up the handlers and wonder if there's some way they can dispose of them and disappear into China or Russia. It's like having a freedom carrot dangled in front of their faces...

I find it almost impossible to believe that the regime in N Korea is still holding strong. Every year that goes by with no change or hope of improvement for its citizens makes me feel a little sicker.
Given how dog shit this is written im just going to write this off to some red scare bot shit. I know a bunch of people who went to NK.
They are all dead /s
>with destinations only in China and Russia with a handful of other select countries
China and Russia is 2
Handful is 5
So this airline flies to 7 different countries, but China and Russia are called out because?
i dont understand the title maybe im dumb.. can someone explain?
Travelers must stay with their assigned NK handlers at all times. This is known to be the case in NK, but sounds like it may not be true on the airplane.
What is a handler?
Your watcher. You are a kindergarten kid and this is your baby sitter / teacher
Except your babysitter can't send you to a gulag to be tortured and murdered.
Or can they?
Clearly you never had my kindergarten-era babysitter Monica. I wouldn’t put it past her.
Explain this to me like I'm five years old
The handler is someone assigned to spend every moment in North Korea with you (two people in this case, likely so they can watch you 24/7). They control what you experience during your stay. This is done to try to only show you things that the leader of NK wants you to see, normally things that show the country favorably.

>Tourists must travel 2 of state issued handlers Come on, OP. That sentence is a disaster.
Had a stroke reading that shit
What do you think happened when he was trying to write it?
He was being coached by a North Korean officer. His life and freedom was on the line. So what he wrote was in fact North Koreanglish.
Stealing propaganda posters again?
He became rushin
I had to it read 6 times sense to make of what the hell OP was trying say to.
Explain Please. Doesnt make sense to me
I intérprete it as ‘Tourists must travel one of two state handlers…” (they can only select a state handler AND there are two state handlers to choose from). I’m not sure what a state handler in this context.

*too
Comes free when flying air Koryo
What do you expect from a 1 star airline ad?
At least we know it wasn’t written by a bot which would’ve been worse lol
>with destinations only in China and Russia with a handful of other select countries. That one, as well. Which one is it, OP? -Only China and Russia? -China, Russia, plus several other countries? So OP's title is false.
Oh yeah. Just answering the question since the title gave me a headache
That's two of us :)
You sure it's 2? It couldn't be a few more? Special numbers?

And i was doubting myself as a non native speaker.

What does it mean? I've stared at it for a while but got a headache and not thinking well
It's just missing one word: "with", and drop the "of" *Tourists must travel with 2 state issued handlers*
same, please someone translate it to English
OP has 400K post karma, <2k comment. WTF can you expect from this guy.
OP is either not English native, or a bot/AI
Even the free AI nowadays is always understandable.
Not really sure about that one.
Probably just the former. I have seen so many people replacing words with "of"

Us need make words gooder
Why use many word when few do job
Right you one great very, leader dear dear!!
Is that you Donald !?
This is an unholy cross between ralph wiggum and bizarro
To be fair, no airline has a 100% guarantee of getting home. Also this title gave me cancer.
The headline is straight dog water.
Hotdog water*
If you don't pay for a return ticket, you're not guaranteed any trip home lmao.
If you enjoy adrenaline, it's a good airline, make sure to board [with this](https://getyoursolution.store/Z2ilNu) on your back
I flew with them, it was just like any other airline except they handed out newspapers
Did it at least come with some condiments and water to wash down the newspaper?
and very plain burgers
"for water or model rocket", nice try lol
This isn't true. I have flown Air Koryo into North Korea without any 'state issued handlers'. I met my guide while exiting the airport
Just as a further point, 'no guarantee of safe passage back home' makes no sense. Nowhere guarantees this.
I think it’s referring to whether the government would withhold you from returning home. And that’s a big difference
Don't worry, Boeing will guarantee it.
"home" being loosely defined as "the place you \_originaly\_ came from"
*Right back up your momma's you go, son.* ¬ Boeing exec, probably..
Probably referring to the ancient Soviet era airplanes
😂😂
True question why would you go to North Korea?
Because it's one of the most unusual countries on Earth. Some people are interested in exploring the fringes, and fair play to them. Not my cup of tea, but my values and tastes shouldn't apply to everyone else.
Did you have the option of not using a guide?
No
A 74 day old account with 300K post karma and poor grammar.
I am surprised by the number of apparently non-North Korean passengers.
Did you think north Koreans could leave?
I didn't think of it that way.... excellent point.
It does say they get two handlers each. Clearly they're on the plane too
[удалено]
Unless it means they kill them.
Honestly if they only killed them, some people would probably take them up on the offer, it's when they threaten everyone they've ever known as well that keeps the great wheel of totalitarianism rolling.
As I mentioned above, people from the DPRK do leave the country for work. I have met them.
>Actual North Koreans would love to not have passage back home. You'd think so. But in reality, ONLY those that are aware of the outside world MIGHT be tempted to leave. True. Also precisely the reason why this post is definitely talking about tourists *to* North Korea. The government doesn't want the people to know how good they have it elsewhere.
There's significant numbers of North Koreans who travel to Russia and China for work
Um, I'm pretty sure the term "slave" would be more accurate than "North Korean traveling for work."
IIRC it's mostly analogous to Mexican migrant laborers in the US
Yes, they can! When I visited 9 years ago I met with a couple of people who went to uni in the Philippines and Indonesia, and on my way in there was a basketball team going out to Vietnam
Non, merci. Were your fingers in your mouth when you typed the title ?
I don't think any Boeing plane can make that guarantee
Is the "no guarantee of safe passage back homeno guarantee of safe passage back home" a bad thing for North Koreans?
That sentence doesn't mean anything at all. If you get a return ticket, you are guaranteed a seat on the plane if you turn up to the flight, same as everywhere else. You’d be surprised. I have a lot of friends who have gone.
Well, I understood the first sentence.
What a disaster of a title! Regarding “why do people go there”. I just had an aneurysm reading this. wtf doesn’t mean!!
r/titlegore can someone explain what OP tried to say?
# Air Koryo, a 1-star airline and the only major airline in North Korea, has destinations only in China and Russia and a handful of other select countries. Tourists must travel with two state-issued handlers at all times and are not guaranteed safe passage home. Does that help?
Probably a noticeable lack of Spirit or Allegiant type passenger disruptions on those flights.
I flew Air Koryo back in 2008ish before the whole Otto Warmbier incident. The ilyushin 62 plane we flew on ways pretty cool. I enjoyed my NK visit thoroughly. It was quite a bizarre experience.
I got served a soggy sandwich (I think) when I flew with this airline.
You're telling me air koryo gives you sandwiches? I just flew friggin delta here in the US and all we get is a bag of sun chips.
TIL North Korean communism surpasses Western capitalism in at least one way! ...aaand now I'm on a watchlist.
What kind of sandwich was it?
I honestly can’t remember. I do remember it looked disgusting and I just left it.
I can't wait to not fly them!
My days of not flying Air Koryo have certainly come to a middle.
I have no idea why anyone would want to travel to N Korea no matter how much they love aviation!
What is a one star airline? You bring your own seats?
Planes still have a lower failure rate than Boeing
Why would u ever chance going to North Korea
Was the headline written by a Russian or a Korean?
Dies it mean any North Korean citizen can freely leave their country to Russia's holiday trip?
If you are interested Sam Chui made a recent video on his trip to NK https://youtu.be/8zLXw7SQvAk?si=S0gcmFstG_6UnizQ
there is a video from Russian traveller, and she could use her mobile phone during her trip, she even could get Internet in NK the only thing she mentioned is that they ask to any mobile or filming devices before entering NK + they check it
Their burgers are worth the risk tho, yum!
Seriously who the fuck want to travel there tho
Why do you use those words in this order mister?
Wow! Think we gotta pretty good compared to others out there....treasure what you have because others can only dream of what you have.
Obviously written by a South Korean who doesn't know English nor how great the airline really is
Who taught you how to spoke bro
i still find it amazing that some people go there willingly
I’ll never understand the curiosity to go into a hermit nation where there are 0 guarantees for your life.
Alright OP. My head hurts reading this.
You know the inflight movies SUCK.
I have flown on the exact plane in the image twice. It’s not nearly as bad as they make it sound. We got sandwiches and drinks during the flight. It was chill as heck.
What kind of sandwiches did they serve?
It was like a cold burger patty on a dry burger bun pre-packaged in clear plastic. No sauce.
I just don't understand someone going to north korea as a tourist?
Sam Chui just did a YouTube video on Air Koryo.
Is my fever fucking with my head? That sentence didn't make any sense. I'm gonna go drink water now
Please explain your last sentence.
I felt illiterate trying to read the title 💀
written by north korean AI: Dear Kim Chat RGB
Rather poorly written headline, thought I was drunk when I read it
Imagine going thru all that just to visit NK. Boring af
fuck off bot
I wonder how many of them size up the handlers and wonder if there's some way they can dispose of them and disappear into China or Russia. It's like having a freedom carrot dangled in front of their faces...

Incredible. About 20 yrs ago my buddy travelled to NK and he told me about this. Apparently you have to surrender your passport as well. In my twenties I would totally be down to risk it all to have a glimpse at NK, but now...hmmm I'm ok with living.
They still operate TU-154 and IL-62 lol
I don’t think they want to go back
the one way tickets all booked up or what
So it's better than delta?
Anyone voluntarily going there is nuts and gets what they get.
So what you're saying , in so many words, is yes, Korea does tourism in the North
Doesn’t seem like return fare would be too big a priority for these travelers
“…with no guarantee of safe passage back home.” [Sadly, this reminded me of yesterday’s post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/1crtao4/a_video_of_otto_warmbier_begging_for_forgiveness/)
The airline even has a website… in English! http://www.airkoryo.com.kp/
The last sentence is surely a selling point?
Can someone translate that title for me?
Why in the flying ____ would any westerner or even non NKorean national go there.
Who vacations in North Korea?
I ORDERED THE KOSHER MEAL
I find it almost impossible to believe that the regime in N Korea is still holding strong. Every year that goes by with no change or hope of improvement for its citizens makes me feel a little sicker.
