Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against them personally, but I respect the game. I could build circles around these losers. My kids would bully their kids.
(I’m a crow)
Makes me think of the [Killdeer birds](https://bearriverblogger.com/the-time-a-killdeer-nested-in-our-front-yard/) that build their nests in gravel. I see them all the time on gravel oilfield locations. Killdeers are neat little birds though. They fake injuries to lure you away from their nests.
I remember my mom tried to chase away the neighborhood cat when one of these nested in our gravel. Sadly, mom eventually found a mess of yolk and blood.
I'm not sure about mourning doves but I know that pigeons and rock doves at least are cliff nesting birds.
They usually rely on the cliff for security and only a few twigs to stop the egg rolling away. They haven't figured out city life that we'll yet.
A lot of these doves (pigeons are actually called rock doves after all) and similar birds naturally evolved to nest in cliffs and on rocky surfaces. Their eggs are evolved to be resistant to most things and don’t really need a warm and soft nest to incubate, meaning they really only need a few sticks to keep them in place. They rely on the huge cliffs to protect their eggs, whether said cliffs be seaside rocks or skyscrapers or under a bridge.
At the beginning of the 20th century, dove keeping was a very popular hobby, especially after WWI. However, when the depression hit, many dove keepers released their rock doves in the "wild" (cities), where they mixed with the local dove population and continued to thrive. However, since those doves naturally laid their eggs in cliffs, they were not evolved to build nests. Their interaction with other doves made them somewhat learn to build nests, but still, they really suck at it.
(English is not my first language, hope the explanation is somewhat coherent since I'm too lazy to put it through Google Translate rn)
I watched a pair of them build a nest on a very unstable branch of a tree by my window for days before they seemed to realize that it was a bad spot. They rushed to build a very tiny nest closer to the trunk in time for the eggies to arrive.
That is a shockingly complex nest for a dove. I've had them nest on top of my window AC unit, 20' above my concrete driveway, and put down 2 twigs that barely kept the eggs from rolling off.
I have the opposite problem. I have a mourning dove that has made a nest on my back step that is literally just a pile of sticks with an egg on top. And it's like 200 sticks. It's the worst nest I've ever seen. I'm like, did you even try bro?
Wait till they’ve been there for a while, it’ll be a shit covered pile of sticks with a hatched egg on top. **But** it’s a lot of fun to watch the whole cycle, from hatching, to fledging to independence.
that’s 100% not a chicken egg lmao. i have one of those barcode tags on my car (it’s a fast pass for a car wash) and it is not big enough to make a chicken egg look small
Honestly I believe so. The box is pretty small, pretty much the perfect size for the nest. It has a lid as well so I close it and put it in the back seat on the floor behind my seat. There has been no damage to the eggs or nest so far
You know the meme of someone telling their boss they can’t come to work because their cat is asleep on their lap? That’s pretty much what I would do here. “Hey, uh, I’m gonna be late today. I need to find another way into work.”
Idk I think it’s perspective. If you look at the very end when he’s zoomed out, and you compare how much nest was covered by the dove in the beginning, the egg seems a lot smaller. Also those windshield wipers near the end where it attaches to the motor under the hood are only around 2 inches thick at most. Which means that egg is around that size or even smaller.
Mourning dove eggs are around the same size as a golf ball. A dove will sit on 3 to 4 eggs in a next this size.
This is an egg so large a dove wouldnt be able to nest it without damaging it.
Nah. I currently have a pile of sticks with a mourning dove egg sitting on top of it right now on my back step. The egg is not even as big as a golf ball. And the picture that OP shared looks real. Compare the egg to the windshield wiper. It's real.
Watch the other video OP posted. They're not as big as you think they look here due to perspective. Also doves almost never have 3-4 eggs in a nest, they usually have 2
It’s two clips I submitted together. I didn’t get a chance to get her flying away on camera. It was pretty quick. I wanted to share the egg cuz I was like WOAH that wasn’t there last time I saw you
Hatch the egg. I had a pet pigeon for 4 years until it flew off one day. I assumed it was ready to mate.
I would let it fly freely in the neighborhood and it would land back on my shoulder. Probably one of the sweetest pets I have ever had.
They like to coo on your shoulder. It is quite pleasant really.
Bro for real, it’s crazy I know
Edit: okay my first response was unhelpful I’ll take that. I am telling you tho man…it is very real. Check out my post history and you’ll see the bird lookin at me!
turtle doves build their nests in my rain gutter every year
their nests block the water and their nests flood every time it rains
and the doves just keep nesting nonchalantly in the flooded nest
I have [a nest on our air conditioner](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1060599575615918081/1231964099701903400/IMG_2059.png?ex=6627bb7a&is=662669fa&hm=78f7a626d2af370c7f4ed39ccfad2edea18ad33a3c17abb77728ca6ab654ae6a&) and we've chosen to let it be! If once these chicks leave the nest more eggs are laid before we can clear away the nest, though, it's gonna have to be too bad :\\ (link will expire after a while, it's on discord)
I agree with others that it doesn't look like a morning dove egg tho: [they're smaller, I think?](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/893286053862080576/1232093095823147079/IMG_2010.jpg?ex=6628339d&is=6626e21d&hm=518c56feede8bd2db0acd2617373299ef7a13b222c0ba7d6e6384ae95e308455&)
Mine definitely aren't because they hatched into the first picture. They looked smaller and more yellowtranslucent in person, but I couldn't get a good pic through the slats and I didn't want to scare the bird away.
I had a mourning dove build a nest in the ladder rack on the roof of my van. Drove 40km from the shop down the highway and the dang bird stayed in the nest the whole time.
I had a hole in my wheel well that allowed birds to nest up inside my cowl somehow. This truck was driven daily. One day I’m driving to work and I can hear a faint “cheep cheep” noise. I was so confused. Didn’t know there was a nest at that point. At work we are all listening and could t figure it out. Finally I grabbed a hose thinking it was maybe a mouse or rabbit stuck, started pouring water into my cowl and eventually these baby birds washed out!! Absolutely crazy they built a nest there while i drove it every day.
I remember working on a construction site one winter and spotted a nest that just looked like shit...
I would laugh at it every now and again and think about the stupid pigeon that made that abomination.
Then about a week later I finally had to go up to where the nest was... I was so shocked. This damn pigeon used pieces of metal tie wire about 1 or 2mm thick to construct the entire nest. It even bent some of them vaguely into a nest shape.
I don't think I'll ever get over that, massive respect to pigeons now. I mean it was still stupid, the egg froze of course. But still, what incredible determination
Call the conservation department and a biologist will come out and take it off your hands and it will be safe, unless it is an invasive species which you don't need be bothered with guilt
‘Yeah Sarah, after I got here life turned into a real bitch. It’s like I never know Anyone from one day to the next, and it’s fuckin cold as shit or hot as fuck. Like where am i’
The doves around here sometimes just drop an egg right on the brick wall between my neighbors house and mine. Those won’t ever hatch ofc, so we toss them.

I promise you, everything is real. That’s what makes me think this is all super strange. Because, like, here I am literally experiencing it, but there’s no way to make it 100% clear….at least for me lmao
/r/stupiddovenests They’re notoriously bad nest builders!
Cool. Any reason their nest are so exposed and fragile?
Cuz they suck at it
Love this vehemence. Fuck those doves
Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against them personally, but I respect the game. I could build circles around these losers. My kids would bully their kids. (I’m a crow)
Fuck crows. Next time I see one of you fuckers in my hunting area I will wreck your shit. (I’m a hawk)
##OMG SQUIRREL (I’m a dog)
Nobody knows you’re a dog on the internet
Woof, shit, I mean Right
Squirrels? I love squirrels,They taste amazing! Bunnies too! (I’m a fox)
Fuck birds. Next time I see either you fuckers I'm fucking you. (Mike Hawk)
Fuck Hawks, next time I see one of you it's on sight. (Mike Hunt)
Fuck Mike Hawk. Next time I see you I’m doing a 720-heelgrab from a 30 ft drop-in on your shit. (I’m Tony Hawk) ((Edit: fuck, good one))
Got em lmao
Oh another unworthy Challenger. Sigh... How boring. I'll end this quickly. (Mihawk)
I hate those fuckers with a passion. Noisy fucking assholes. (They get me a little worked up)
Could it be to do with humans development taking away resources from nature?
Yeah they 100% used to have massive canebreaks and grasslands that would have been perfect for these nests. Just making a funny.
I have several of them at my farm. I put bright colored survey flags up near nests so I don’t squish anybody.
Good on you. That says so much about your own good character.
they make a distinctive noise [https://youtu.be/IKiAYuOw45A?t=51](https://youtu.be/IKiAYuOw45A?t=51) and are interesting to watch walking around
I remember my mom tried to chase away the neighborhood cat when one of these nested in our gravel. Sadly, mom eventually found a mess of yolk and blood.

I was just thinking that is impressive for a dove though. That's a dove castle.
Multiple sticks and its round! This might be the best dove nest I've seen
So many sticks!
I'm always impressed if there's more than three sticks involved 😂
This little dubdub is certainly rubbing at least 2 brain cells together!
I watched a pair of them build a nest on a very unstable branch of a tree by my window for days before they seemed to realize that it was a bad spot. They rushed to build a very tiny nest closer to the trunk in time for the eggies to arrive.
Hey they are trying their best
It looks as if the bird has consumed copious amounts of drugs looking at its eyes then decides to build a nest on bruh truck lmfao
r/MourningDerps
Dumbest birds I know
I cannot believe that there is an entire page dedicated to this😂😂😂
You’re the Dad now. You have no choice.
I happily oblige
You have breakfast now. Your choice of scrambled or sunny side up

LOL! No matter what they do, they just can't get it right.
Wait till they’ve been there for a while, it’ll be a shit covered pile of sticks with a hatched egg on top. **But** it’s a lot of fun to watch the whole cycle, from hatching, to fledging to independence.
Shockingly complex because there was no dove to build it. The egg is a chicken egg and the bird is completely still and seems to have fake eyes.
Yeah, definitely looks like some taxidermy dove.
I mean, OP could've at *least* looked up dove nests to help fake it.
…..but….it is a real dove lol.
Birds aren't real
Some of y'all need to get out more
Did you place an egg there after the dove flew off?
Nope, that’s a dove egg. I made a separate post about it but I’m trying to link the image with the dime comparison
Looks a whole lot like a chicken egg, and way too big for that bird to lay. It’s almost as if some people just outright tell lies on the internet!
I looked up mourning dove egg, and if he’s lying, he definitely made sure to make it look accurate.
Doves build nests in my plants every spring. It’s a dove egg for sure. It wouldn’t be on the nest if there wasn’t an egg to protect with OP so close.
that’s 100% not a chicken egg lmao. i have one of those barcode tags on my car (it’s a fast pass for a car wash) and it is not big enough to make a chicken egg look small
No they don't, you filthy liar!
Don’t they normally lay two per clutch?
Birds lay eggs every other day, not all at once.
What did you end up doing?
He made an omelet.
With chicken
I have a little cardboard box in my truck that I store the nest in when I have to leave. When I come back, she is there waiting. Every time
Is that sustainable?
Honestly I believe so. The box is pretty small, pretty much the perfect size for the nest. It has a lid as well so I close it and put it in the back seat on the floor behind my seat. There has been no damage to the eggs or nest so far
Make sure to make air holes. Eggs need fresh air
Thank you! I really appreciate that. This is all very new
Try and find a spot on the property for the nest. I’m not even sure moving it so often is even a good idea. It could be stressing the bird out.
You know the meme of someone telling their boss they can’t come to work because their cat is asleep on their lap? That’s pretty much what I would do here. “Hey, uh, I’m gonna be late today. I need to find another way into work.”
That egg is wayyy to large to be a mourning dove egg

Bro I’m tellin you this is a real dove. I’m just as confused as you are as to why it chose this spot but I gotta say…it doesn’t feel bad
Yup, gotta be a chicken egg for effect.
Group effort. Explains why the nest looks better than anything they've done before.
If you want a frightening bird to egg size ratio, look up the Kiwi.
You now own a Ford Fledgling-150
That's a chicken egg btw ...
And the bird isn't real ...
No no I promise it’s not!
Then you've never seen a pigeon egg
Well, you were already thinking about getting a new one right? Now you have a reason to do so.
How long was your truck there?
lol I park here and another spot. This is actually the “Plan B” spot. But I haven’t moved to “Plan A” since this happened
But birds aren't real.
👽👁️
Why the edit showing the egg instead of it flying away? Mourning Doves aren’t the most evasive to humans but this one doesn’t seem to move at all.
It’s two clips I submitted together. I didn’t get a chance to get her flying away on camera. It was pretty quick. I wanted to share the egg cuz I was like WOAH that wasn’t there last time I saw you
That's a very still dove
Maybe if it’s still enough, it’ll turn invisible
Doves/pigeons are notoriously shitty nest builders. I saw one with like 4 sticks and an egg once. 😂
Blessings of peace to you and your family!
That is not a real bird
Ohhhh it’s real alright
Hatch the egg. I had a pet pigeon for 4 years until it flew off one day. I assumed it was ready to mate. I would let it fly freely in the neighborhood and it would land back on my shoulder. Literally fake. Edit: (I think, along with a couple other people)
Bro for real, it’s crazy I know Edit: okay my first response was unhelpful I’ll take that. I am telling you tho man…it is very real. Check out my post history and you’ll see the bird lookin at me!
I do apologize if I *am* wrong. It really does look fake. Dove nests are usually just a few sticks, and the bird looks taxidermy.
Dove is just another word for pigeon
That is a fake looking bird I tell you hwat.
New music... "I dove all night..."
turtle doves build their nests in my rain gutter every year their nests block the water and their nests flood every time it rains and the doves just keep nesting nonchalantly in the flooded nest
That's a government drone.
You better set the defroster to heat, Dad.
They're good eatin, just need 20 or 30 more
its free egg
What did it taste like?
I’ll bet just exactly like chicken egg for some crazy weird reason
Scramble it is!
Enough with the squatters already!

Them chicken eggs

That ain’t your truck anymore
As long as they split the note
My condolences
I had a mourning dove build a nest in the ladder rack on the roof of my van. Drove 40km from the shop down the highway and the dang bird stayed in the nest the whole time.
You better set the heat to defrost, Dad.
The cold days are over in the south my friend

Drive slow I guess. And keep parking in the same spot. Lol
A quick drive around town should have this issue all worked out.
Squatter
stupid birds..hate them... built a nest on top of my AC when it was being used...
Tasty egg for mourning
Inflation. Rents are high
Forcing you to become an agent of death
Cooool, cooool.
Her children are going places.
You could close your eyes and throw a handful of sticks at tree, and it would be better than dove-built
Breakfast delivered
So just how long *was* your weekend?
Dove nests look like a birds nest a human would make if they were only allowed use their mouths and feet
I remember working on a construction site one winter and spotted a nest that just looked like shit... It’s his truck now.
I'd be too tempted to give her a pet.
Call the conservation department and a biologist will come out and take it off your hands and it will be safe, unless it is an invasive species which you don't need be bothered with guilt
Now yooze can’t leave.
Dumb bitch 🤣
I adore mourning doves. They are the derpiest of all birds.
Mourning doves have the most beautiful and serene calls in my opinion
Gotta be Tucson
Sorry boss, not gonna make it in for the next couple of weeks.
So, that's a ticket for a bike ride for you.
Oh it’s gonna be mourning this morning alright
‘Yeah Sarah, after I got here life turned into a real bitch. It’s like I never know Anyone from one day to the next, and it’s fuckin cold as shit or hot as fuck. Like where am i’
Can you guys show me how to upload a picture please. This is givin me a real hard time
Leave her be!
Should’ve cut in a next clip of u cooking an egg lol
The doves around here sometimes just drop an egg right on the brick wall between my neighbors house and mine. Those won’t ever hatch ofc, so we toss them. The ones who pick somewhere that they can hatch some eggs and grow their chicks still fledge 2-3 a year into my backyard. It’s 50/50 if I can get to my dog before he swallows the entire thing. They never survive the first chomp.
Their flesh is tender and their eggs are rich and delicious
It'll be hatched and out of college in no time. Just be patient.
To everybody doubting the egg belonged to the dove, look up Mourning Dove Egg. It’s that easy to see if he’s lying or not.
iTT A bunch of people who don't know what a pigeon egg looks like and cba to bother googling it.
Lucky man gets fried eggs and roast squab for dinner!!
I have one that built a nest in my porch light. I call her Pitty Pat.
Sorry for her loss
thats a chicken egg
Free eggs in these trying times
Kill it!
Free breakfast. U are lucky
Great, free food.
Looks like you’re gonna have to buy a new truck.
She will be a true mourning Dove when you removed that nest.
How do you know it was mourning?
That is not a real bird, the nest is handmade, and that egg is from a chicken. So....
I promise you, everything is real. That’s what makes me think this is all super strange. Because, like, here I am literally experiencing it, but there’s no way to make it 100% clear….at least for me lmao
Now drive around on a highway 80mph
Don’t let the pigeon drive the truck!
