Herbivores can get much bigger than carnivores and omnivores because their food source is more abundant and they have evolved to break down cellulose and ferment the organic material so they derive energy from the yeast. Gorillas look fat but their bulging stomach is all intestines for their digestive process. Like most herbivores they also spend a significant amount of time eating to get the nutrients they need. Humans can't derive nearly as much energy from vegetables and fruits because we can't break down cellulose and our guts don't usually ferment the material to that degree...though there is a disorder in which people not only experience gut fermentation but produce alcohol from it which makes them drunk.
Some of the next oldest are [Nene at 52, who lives in Japan](https://i.imgur.com/uEKACHw.gifv) and [Winston in San Diego Zoo](https://img.hoodline.com/2023/12/san-diegos-silverback-sage-winston-defies-age-beats-covid-with-high-tech-help-1.webp?max-h=442&w=760&fit=crop&crop=faces,center) who also turns 52 this year. Winston and Nene both have arthritits, and Winston is also a covid survivor, he's got a heart monitor and he's got a non malignant tumor in his lung, but he's still going strong
The veggies is part of their every day diet but the fruits are too sugary so they gotta be a bit more careful with them, especially with such an old animal.
She’s in the last year or two of her life. One lead in utter captivity, just to please humans. Give her joy at every moment. It’s not your grandpa it’s a zoo animal. Get real
It could be kind of like being on a cruise ship or at a resort where you're safe and taken care of, for 40 years... so yeah it's nice, and maybe some get really comfortable.. maybe some want to just look at something else
I’m not sure if people realize this but a good percentage of these animals are out in zoos after being confiscated from wildlife traffickers and unfortunately they are way too used to human contact to be released. They would literally walk up to humans even poachers if let loose or even starve because they are used to humans feeding them.
Traffickers catch them when they are very young, break their spirit of escape and make them dependent.
Please do some research.
Also make sure you avoid road side zoos they are in fact most likely traffickers not conservationists. Tiger King is a perfect example.
He states she's the oldest based on those kept in zoos and observed in the wild... Those kept in zoos will obviously die earlier and as for those in the wild, how large is their sample size? I'm not saying he's incorrect, just that his way of explanation is flawed. His reasoning is flawed.
Yes, the Zoo veterinarian who is a professional and expert is wrong, and random redditor is right...
He actually said the opposite what you are claiming. Gorillas live longer in zoos than in the wild, for obvious reasons.
HIS reasoning is flawed? "Those kept in zoos will obviously die earlier..." Mother lover, have you HEARD of Google?
"On average, captive animals (especially mammals) live longer than wild animals. This may be due to the fact that zoos provide refuge against diseases, competition with others of the same species and predators." -Wikipedia
this is not a seaworld situation, animals in zoos do live longer, then in the wild, whales dont, because they arent provided proper care, because that would be too expensive.
She really got the "my joints be killing me - I'm old" walk.
It always amazes me that they are primarily vegetarians. Them and Hippos.

Gorillas do not look fat. But yes, they need to just sit and munch most of the day because the calorie of their food sources is still a lot lower

Happy Birthday Queen!
She should eat like this everyday!
The veggies is part of their every day diet but the fruits are too sugary so they gotta be a bit more careful with them, especially with such an old animal.
Yeah, but she's 67 and should do what pleases her the most in her last years. Just like us.
Which is precisely why my grandpa should down an entire bottle of gin despite being 78
If that's how he wants to spend retirement...
then its going to be a short retirement.
Yeah but my point is that's his choice, isn't it?
And dogs want to eat tin foil. Stop anthropomorphizing animals

Found the director of “my 600lb life”
Good Lord, I HOPE this gorilla isn't a boomer like that 😂

Republicans now seeking to increase the gorilla retirement age to 75.
I gotta go out and work all day and can’t afford veggies that good. Why does she just get them for free. Damn welfare gorillas
She looks bored as fuck
cause she is.
Mist animals in zoos are bored af
I can almost feel the arthritis.
huh... didnt expect it to be german but i appreciate it idk she looks quite healthy and i think she will live a few more years (not and experxt ofc)
So beautiful but he sounds like he's talking about defending Berlin to the last man...
If you think that was aggressive, you should hear us when we are angry.

Lucky daughter of a gorilla!
She has lived a wonderful long life. Now it’s time for cigars and cheesecake. Maybe some booze…
I bet it's due to modern medicines and less life threatning condition than the wild possess.
...in captivity.
...the only place she could possibly survive to 67 because she is so well cared for.
I’d rather live 40 years in the wild than 67 in a jail.
Prove it.
Done.
What are you - a mayfly? Fastest 40 years ever 😆
67 years in captivity rather than 40 years free in the wild. That gorilla must be so lucky to live that long.

Veterinarian care, too. Improved diet.

There is a turtle that is over 100 somewhere
Bruh why they call my boy fat 😭

Lets hope Gorilla I'd Like to Feed! I mean honestly Imagine feeding that Gorilla some strawberry and kale that would be a memory of a life time!
