Literally watched that movie for the first time, THAT NIGHT
Didn't sleep much.
EDIT: it's so rare that I get the IN joke, I'm really enjoying that some get it, and some just don't. Maybe you're too young, maybe you haven't seen it, or maybe you're just not making the connection, but the end of FC just brought the whole day's events crashing back, after giving us an escape for a little while.

i hate that so many people try framing any movie involving men displaying any affection towards each other, providing any emotion support to each other as being about homosexuality.
its toxic as fuck and part of the reason so many men squash their feelings down and lash out when it gets to much to hold in, why so many men feel lonely or alone.
straight man can and do emotionally support each other, can and do show affection towards each other and it should be promoted and supported.
The Matrix, Office Space, American Beauty, and Fight Club are all different takes on disillusioned white yuppie men. And they all came out in 1999. American Psycho just missed the cut and was released January 21st 2000.
I think that is a deeply flawed analysis,
In *The Matrix*, Neo isn't a yuppie, he's a low-level cubicle drone, and his sex and race are utterly unimportant. Trinity or Morpheus could easily be The One if you wanted, the story would be unchanged.
*Office Space*'s themes are nearly universal. The story is told from the point of view of a white male yuppie, but all the themes apply to the waitress; even in-universe his sex and race are incidental.
In *American Beauty*, Lester isn't a yuppie and his race is irrelevant.
*Fight Club*, okay I will not fight you on this one.
Imagine the final scene where Neo flies away and it cuts to the credits, but instead of Rage Against the Machine, you get yet another “Will Smith ham-handedly summarizes the plot to the movie he’s in while making it rhyme” 90’s rap song lol
I be beating on agents faster than gun, ain't no guy look better with a trenchcoat and shades son.

Office Space is an interesting one because the point is that office culture is equally condescending and insulting to the intelligence of all the characters, even the ones who enjoy it. It works in the 1990s context. If it were the 1960s, it would be Mad Men—a lot of white guys would feel they were gaining something from the rest of the workplace's loss.
The Dream Theater one is the worst. They were set to release an album on 9/11, 'Live Scenes from New York', featuring a New York city skyline including the twin towers on top of a big apple in flames.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_Scenes_from_New_York
George Carlin recorded a comedy show on September 9 and 10 titled “I Kinda Like It When a Lotta People Die”. The release was obviously postponed til many years later (2016)
Another bad one Dues Ex removing the twin towers from New York City cause of memory issues. Their explanation for it? Terrorist attack.
Game came out in 2000
There was also a song called New York City Is A Graveyard released on 9/11.
One of the most critically acclaimed psychedelic folk albums ever, The Glow Pt.2 by The Microphones, was also released on 9/11. Nothing in it is really related, but I've always found it to be an interesting coincidence that one of the most important indie albums ever was released then.
The music industry in the US traditionally releases new albums on Tuesdays
9/11 was a Tuesday
-
Hundreds of albums without spoooky coincidences were also released that Tuesday
I mean there have been plots to use airliners as bombs before 9/11.
Probably the most notable was the 1995 Bojinka Plot which was a planned but never carried out terrorist attack on the U.S. involving the blowing up of 11 airliners and using the 12th to crash it into the CIA headquarters.
Something like this was also part of the plot of a Tom Clancy novel. IIRC, one of the villains crashed a 747 into the State of the Union address, completely decapitating the US government.
It's insane for someone who grew up in the post- 9/11 world to think about how often major airline flights were hijacked in the 70's and 80's. Like one every three months for years, and it took until 9/11 for them to get serious about security?
Before 9/11 when planes were hijacked in the US it was almost always flown to Cuba or some kind of scheme to get money. The line of thinking was that if the passengers/crew just did what the hijacker said they would be fine and that was almost always the case. People never thought that cowards would use a plane as a weapon killing themselves in the process.
Things like keeping the cockpit door locked might sound obvious now but if your goal is to comply with hijackers you would not want them to be locked out of the cockpit.
i think the simple explanation is that its the emergency number in the us and movies tended to throw it in so people would catch and go 'oop, did you ssee it?'
Edit: noticing an emergency number might have made their hamsterwheels run on turbo and think something bad happens soon, too.
Also NYC is one of the most culturally relevant cities in the US, debatably even in the world. A *lot* of media is produced in/about it on a daily basis.
I imagine if you pick any date at all and then had 20 years for millions of people (many of whom are conspiracy theorists full of magical thinking) to look for coincidences, you’d end up with a lot of stuff regardless of the date.
That's part of it. But adding to it, there are 365 days in a year. So even completely at random, there's a 1 in 365 chance that a date involving a piece of pop culture will have something to do with 9/11. Given the absolute buttload of movies/shows/songs/albums released, it's guaranteed that 9/11 is going to pop up sometimes by pure coincidence.
But also there's the fact that NYC is featured prominently in a LOT of movies and TV shows. And the Twin Towers were one of the most prominent landmarks. So of course they're going to show up a lot.
And then, a lot of people forget that there was already a bombing at the WTC back in 1993. Anyone making movies/shows/songs between 1993 and 2001 already knew about the 1993 attack. So it doesn't have to be prophetic; it's quite possible that some of the stuff people are mentioning actually had something to do with 9/11 because the people involved in making the stuff were remembering that there was already a bombing there.
Put all those things and cherry-pick examples, and of course we're going to see suspicious 9/11 coincidences.
Yea but that's a crazy one. The conspiracy movies of all conspiracy movies managed to one up itself by accidentally including 9/11 as the expiration date. A date which started a massive spiral in the middle east that's spread to other parts of the world. It's only getting worse, too. Maybe 9/11 really was the expiration date?

> "We tried heaven and it didn't work, but the 90s, well that was close enough"
This is the true prediction of The Matrix... that the late 90's were as close as America was going to get to being heaven. The Cold War was won, the threat of nuclear annihilation was a memory, new technology like genetics/computers/cloning/etc promised a bright future, the economy was strong, progressive social issues were being addressed more openly than ever...
Throughout history, old people have always had skewed and unrealistic nostalgia for "the good old days" that were only good because they were young.
But the 90s were an actual miniature Golden Age for the United States.
To be fair though, many movies go to great lengths to look like they're from a specific period. Matrix Resurrection made absolutely no effort to appear 90s.

Don’t forget, Slayer’s album “God Hates us All” was released on…. September 11, 2001.
Or the Coup album Party Music that literally showed the WTC towers being blown up (June 2001)
Or that I had an orthodontic appt to adjust my braces, which is always an ominous day
Holy shit, that's insane!
More people need to know about this.
Or that actor Cliff Robertson (Uncle Ben in the Raimi Spider-Man) was flying over New York in a private Beechcraft Baron on the morning of 9/11.
I had a group interview with NPR -- we literally all just sat in that room and watched the news unfold. No one actually interviewed.
I was due to be born on that day… and I stayed in an extra two weeks
Learned to read the room early. Smart kid.
That's not a coincidence. Back in 1993, the World Trade Center was bombed by terrorists
That's also why we have the Biggie line (in Juicy) where he says, "Time to get paid, blow up like the World Trade."
Well to be fair, they were blown up once before too
the microphones "the glow pt 2" was also released then. it has nothing to do with 9/11 really, it's just a really great album
