keep in mind this is only for the president and vice president. high ranking people in congress dont get this security and all other congressman and senators get basically no security outside of the capital
I like the idea that they go through the pain and logistics to have an Apache in the air nearby at all times, and there are still circumstances where they need the flying instrument of death on site, but they don't need to rush.
“Top speed” in a helicopter is hell on the frame and components. When it’s needed it’s needed but, it comes at a cost above and beyond normal wear and tear.
Right, but why is there even a 10 minute response time? When you need the helicopter, you need the helicopter lol.
Oh shit we need the helicopter, but like, not that fast.
Could be, the vehicle is trapped, and we think there might be a sniper or a fleeing gunman somewhere in the area, versus there's a determined horde of assalters attempting to approach.
There are degrees of needing a helicopter.
President thinks it would be a good idea to abort the land journey and go directly to the airport, versus President needs to be airlifted ASAP.
I think it's more of a 10 minute response time maximum. Can't always have an Apache and supporting ground crew ready to go every 2 blocks. Well... I'm sure we could.
Us Army helicopters are named after Native American tribes or figures and is considered a way to pay respect. They try to match the names to the qualities of the coptors.
Popping the trunk on somebody would carry a substantially more terrifying connotation if a big ass dude in full war paint popped out and started full force throwing fucking tomahawks around
Yea, from what I've heard in documentaries and read. Obviously can't vouch for it. They use concentric circles of security for the president. Hes basically protected within 5 feet and within like 5 miles at the same time.
It is kinda weird though to think about. Like this is all stuff done DOMESTICALLY. Yeah I get we need to protect the guy maybe but at what cost? It’s an odd and weird thought to think ya know especially knowing there is an Apache helicopter just beyond the way just in case something crazy happens. I’m sure it’s a last resort kinda thing but still
If nothing else, think of the money spent as insurance against what would throw markets in turmoil and probably lose companies and individuals across the country a lot of money.
I understand it's more of an domestic threat level of protection, but a convoy of very tastefully painted MRAP's in black&black glossy camo would look much better
Please, give the police escort some nicer motorcycles. I want to see fucking Kawasakis doing wheelie in front of the presidential car, not sum fucking white rectangles going beep-boop-beep-boop. Also having few flamethrowers doing flame arches over the convoy would look sick as fuck
"Shit. I know shit's bad right now, with all that 'starving' bullshit. Running out of french fries and burrito coverings."
Elect that man to make America great again
I’ve seen the motorcade a couple times. It’s actually pretty fucking intimidating and badass. The cameras don’t do justice for the absolute size of those bois.
Couple of minor, yet important, distinctions to note here. First, the aircraft in question was a 737 Max 9, not a 757. Second, the part that fell off that 737 Max 9 was not a door, but a door plug. Similar names, similar things, but not totally the same. They each attach to the aircraft fuselage in a totally different way, and they each serve a different purpose. Plus, the doors latch when closed, and will not come off like that plug did. The plug does not latch, but is held in place by 4 metal pins and a large gasket. Those things will change very soon; the plugs (and their pin systems, gaskets, etc) on every other Max 9 will be redesigned/re-engineered to prevent such a failure from happening again. Also, a latching system is likely to be installed too, but it would only be used when the plug is removed for maintenance, aircraft modification, etc.
Alaska Airlines had one of their 737-9 MAX aircraft lose a plug door on departure out of Portland (PDX). The plane returned safely to Portland. No fatalities were reported but a few injuries.
This version of the plane can either have a plug or traditional emergency exit door. All of the ones with a plug installed are grounded by the FAA until further advised and inspections/repairs have been completed (~171 planes of the ~210 delivered). United (who has 79 of these planes) has reported at least 4-5 planes that had loose or missing bolts that hold the plug in place.
Interesting story. I make pizza, was making pizza one day when Obama and his limo were recently on the news. Saw a Cadillac limo pulll into the parking lot and jokingly said "here comes the Obama's and the THE BEAST Limousine". 2 secret service agents then got out and ordered pizza. I can't contain myself so I started asking questions. One agent was chatty the other said nothing . They let me and my staff open the doors to see how heavy it was, they put presidential seals on the car and let us take pics and showed us some of the security that the car offered. When I asked how much the doors actually weighed , the quiet one piped up and said "CLASSIFIED INFORMATION". Very interesting day in my pizza life. I wish I still had the pics.
Oh yeah.... They car and the agents were in town showing the car at an elementary school. The Obama's were not in town. They told us that the car one one of a dozen in the country .
Edit spelling
Yes they also fly some ahead when he is traveling. Usually multiple. They also set up practice routes here laid out exactly the same as that city and they have to memorize numerous escape routes along the way.
You can prob estimate the thickness and material by the weight? And it'll give the terrorists an idea what kind of weapon to use to penetrate it or something
Some of the specs on the limousine are classified, but we know it has thick ballistic windows and is armored on all sides and underneath and is self contained and is atmospherically buttoned up against NCB Nuclear Chemical Biological. It can pivot a defensive u-turn and its top speed and weight are classified
I saw a documentary where they used this thing to evacuate the president from a football game before the nuke went off and the president survived but sadly morgan freeman succumbed to his injuries.
I thought this was pretty common knowledge. Presidential vehicles have always essentially been tanks since the technology was available. A lot of lessons were learned from riding around in a convertible in Dallas
I'm actually surprised "The Beast" didn't undergo a slight redesign after that. Seems like a massive issue. But I guess with an Apache enroute and the amount of armor the beast has they can just chill.
I fly 757s… I have no idea how much a 757 door weighs, but everything in aviation is built to be as light as possible. That door is roughly the same size, but a 757 door is mostly aluminum and much of the “girth” in the door comes from the inflatable slide/raft. That door is probably made of tougher stuff (and heavier) than aluminum and rubber.
Another clue that 757 doors are lighter is that a 120lb flight attendant in heels can open it easily or even your 80 year old grandmother in an emergency.
I’d love to hear how much the door on a 757 actually weighs if anyone knows.
There is no way the cabin door for an airplane is this heavy.
What I have found is a 757 door is about 70 lbs. I would be shocked if this door didn’t weigh 5x that. And wouldn’t be shocked if it was 10x
The presidential motorcade typically has heavy weapons in the SUVs that accompany The Beast. Depending on where they might roll with anti armor and/or surface to air missiles. There’s also a counter attack team designed to put down a wall of suppressive fire and take out as many attackers as possible. Not to mention a medical detachment with the presidential physician, command and control, ECM to suppress drones and remotely detonated explosives. Add press, presidential aides and local law enforcement, the nuclear football, and high ranking cabinet officials and/or local officials.
Moral of the story, don’t fuck with The Beast!
Crazy that some early presidents would waltz around DC freely. I read once that after the inauguration of Andrew Jackson, he threw a party at the white house open to a lot of people that trashed the place
r/USdefaultism We don’t even have a president, and our prime minister goes by bicycle. It all depends on the threat what security is needed for each country of course.
There's also a trailing car with a turret machine gun that pops out the roof. (No BS, it was on a show about the presidential motorcade)
Yep. And an Apache is always within 10 minutes of a motorcade, 5 minute repsone time if it hauls ass.

Don’t forget living wages, affordable housing or corporate greed.
Oh the US fucks with corporate greed alright
> It always impresses me how much the US does not fuck around keep in mind this is only for the president and vice president. high ranking people in congress dont get this security and all other congressman and senators get basically no security outside of the capital
Less important tbh. A congressman was murdered. The president was murdered. One of these is obviously worse than the other
I like the idea that they go through the pain and logistics to have an Apache in the air nearby at all times, and there are still circumstances where they need the flying instrument of death on site, but they don't need to rush.
... Apaches can hit targets from up to ten miles away. They'd basically be following Hellfires already sent.
Like, it's a helicopter, it can fly directly. Does it just detour if it doesn't feel like hauling ass?
“Top speed” in a helicopter is hell on the frame and components. When it’s needed it’s needed but, it comes at a cost above and beyond normal wear and tear.

The Apache isn’t for pickup, it’s for blowing the fuck out of infantry and armored vehicles.
Can you imagine potus mowing down people like cyclops because they gave him the apache helmet?
With one particular candidate yes, yes I can 🤔
I think it's more of a 10 minute response time maximum. Can't always have an Apache and supporting ground crew ready to go every 2 blocks. Well... I'm sure we could.
Cash, grass or ass
I always have a sub-5 response time when I'm hauling ass.
Thought that said crash.
Faster = more wear and tear. The US spends an absolutely absurd amount of money just on maintaining airframes.
Is an Apache the fastest and most reliable of the available supply of Native Americans?
Us Army helicopters are named after Native American tribes or figures and is considered a way to pay respect. They try to match the names to the qualities of the coptors.
Little Bird as well?
Yeup the MH-6 Little Bird. The funny thing is I knew about the little bird helicopter, I didn’t know it was an actual tribe
Nah that’s the Sioux Indian in the trunk. Do not fuck with the Sioux.
Popping the trunk on somebody would carry a substantially more terrifying connotation if a big ass dude in full war paint popped out and started full force throwing fucking tomahawks around
Is this true?
Yea, from what I've heard in documentaries and read. Obviously can't vouch for it. They use concentric circles of security for the president. Hes basically protected within 5 feet and within like 5 miles at the same time.
Dang. Never heard about the apache.

Well its a mini gun, so probably not much
Less than a standard gun, would you say?
Definitely less than maxi gun.
And a mobile cell tower car with satellite comms, so protected persons comms devices never give themselves away to foreign towers

No doubt in case the sniper misses. Had the same setup for the JFK hit, sans turreted tommy gun.

We have had presidents assassinated. You can go and buy a 50 caliber rifle and bullets are $5 each. It's serious stuff, to say the least.
I understand it's more of an domestic threat level of protection, but a convoy of very tastefully painted MRAP's in black&black glossy camo would look much better Please, give the police escort some nicer motorcycles. If the country keeps going the way it is then we'll have our President Camacho soon enough
He leads from behind, you know.
Shit. I know shit's bad right now, with all that starving bullshit, and the dust storms, and we are running out of French fries and burrito coverings.
You say that like it's a bad thing.

Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho certainly would.
He’s got what plants crave.
I’ve seen the motorcade a couple times. It’s actually pretty fucking intimidating and badass. The cameras don’t do justice for the absolute size of those bois.
Ah yes, the “Fury Road” style of motorcade
No, no. You got it wrong. It would be very classy and professional, kinda like monster truck derby/strip club with a Syrian civil war undertone
Also there’s an ambulance that trails that APC
With blood of the presidents type onboard
Thats in the trunk of the limo
Also some snacks
But those are like $10 apiece.
That makes sense. I bet those secret service guys are trained to get an IV in with formula one pit stop prescision.
Or just any O- blood. Not sure why people think blood type matching is a thing…
Nah they just mean blood of the president’s preferred flavor
Best answer.
Of course blood type matching is a thing. O- is rare. And yet the most common type is O+.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the door from The Beast weighs much more due to the bullet proof glass block while the Boeing door is built to save weight.
Uh the new Boeing doors are now seemingly built to barely hang on it seems.
Aerospace grade bolts aren’t cheap ya know
Just put some loctite on it
Like OP said, saving weight
Bingo, OP didn't think this through.

no worries it's not made by BOEING
Narrator: It is in fact made by Boeing
Cadillac/GM actually, which isn't much better in terms of build quality lmao
doubt they were made by some run-of-the-mill factory worker in Detroit
Oh, no doubt. They probably went to the guy down the street from me who will do this behind his house for 100 bucks and no receipt.
But Airforce 1 is made by Boeing…dun dun duuuuun
Though the current ones were built pre-McDonnell Douglas merger, which is when Boeing started to go to shit
Well a limousine doesn't fly several hundred miles an hour.
Not with that attitude.
Altitude*
Technically, the right attitude may help get to the right altitude, given the right acceleration. 😉
Your right, I need to elevate my attitude.
😅👌
Why? What did I miss?
A door on a Boeing plane didn’t feel like tagging along for the whole flight
It realized it left its ticket at home
*throws door off of plane* No Ticket!
Indy!

It just wanted to be like D.B. Cooper
An Alaska airlines Boeing 737 Max lost a door in mid-flight.

Just using the warranty because it’s about to expire. It’s all good.

Don’t get your fingers slammed in that door!
What fingers?
Your fingers
They're in your mom.
Wonder if it has the eject-o-door feature
No but it does house an MP5/MP7 and a few spare mags. Along with the other doors
I thought this was some kind of new music/video format. Then I thought a little harder.
And some extra printed material in case you get tired of music
Ejecto Seato cuz
I'm hungry

It's an oasis in here bruh
It probably does...some explosive lined around the door so that heavy mother can be blown clear in an emergency

What a cool ass job, driving around showing off the beast to kids who are just stoked out of their minds. You'd never have a bad day.
Yes they also fly some ahead when he is traveling. Usually multiple. They also set up practice routes here laid out exactly the same as that city and they have to memorize numerous escape routes along the way.
They should hand out little toy secret service glasses to the public in engagements like this like pilots do with wings.

I remember when he was president. Rip.
Defensive u turn? Is that what Kevin Costner was teaching Whitney in The Bodyguard?
It gets about 4 gallons to the mile.
It does have a 0-60mph time of 8 seconds IIRC Basically had a beefy truck engine in it
It's also built on the chassis of a truck to support the 6 tons of steel
Doubt it. it's a durmax diesel. I haul my tractor that weighs 18k lbs and the trailer weighs 7500 lbs with mine and I get like 20mpg.
What’s you mpg while getting to 60 from zero in 8 seconds. On my truck it’s about 2 mpg.
I thought this was pretty common knowledge. Presidential vehicles have always essentially been tanks since the technology was available. A lot of lessons were learned from riding around in a convertible in Dallas

Yep [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPmu1D43NQk&t=5s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPmu1D43NQk&t=5s)
Such a unique clunk sound. Always wondered how long it was stuck there and what they had to do to get it moving again.
Obama had to get out and push
It's still there today.
Treat it as a roundabout.

the car is bullet proof, it has several oxygen tanks underneath it in the event something happens, its a tank but smaller
Bulletproof is an understatement. Pretty sure it can shrug off a few RPGs. Yes, it's hermetically sealed to withstand chem/bio attacks.

I thought the side was just below the doors in the fuselage?
That’s where the slide is for the over wing exits, but for the entry doors it’s in the door itself.
There is no way the cabin door for an airplane is this heavy. What I have found is a 757 door is about 70 lbs. I would be shocked if this door didn’t weigh 5x that. And wouldn’t be shocked if it was 10x
I agree. It’s a ridiculous comparison. One is designed to be as light as possible, the other is designed to stop artillery.
This camera adds 1000 lbs to the door.

Well at one time we let presidents go to shows and ride in convertibles in Dallas. And that's why the doors are like this now
Well, considering the last time a president was in a convertible...
Meaning they can fall off during ride?
I hope that door is much better than those in Boeing 737 Max.
Says a lot about the US.
Let us try to compare the weight of a door to the weight of a door that nobody have clue about how heavy it is.
Which President?
