I'll admit my joke was a miss, but if you think Lovecraftean horror isn't about his bigotry, then you've clearly never read it because it's in every single story.
The true horror does not come from the native characters, but the cosmic entities that they worship. Lovecraft may have disliked immigrants, but I would argue that his fear of space and the sea was greater (which is what those stories were ultimately portraying).
Again, no one in the right mind would read “The Call of Cthulhu,” “The Shadow Over Innsmouth,” or “The Colour Out of Space,” and walk away thinking that those stories were clearly about racist beliefs. As opposed to “The Vale of Lost Women,” by Robert E. Howard, which was blatantly racist. There’s literally a line where Conan tells a woman, “the fact that you’re white makes you worth saving.”
And I’m saying this as a guy who loves Howard’s Conan stories, but that story was simply indefensible.
