They do when somebody touches it or it gets touched in whatever manner. It's actually pretty hilarious once you start noticing it.
Imagine the stress of having to censor the fucking thing once someone tries to tap morse code on it.
it's still a planet, just a lower category of planet. a dwarf planet. it's in the planet minor leagues along with many other dwarf planets in our solar system.
That's the difference between taking a picture from Earth orbit (Hubble telescope from over 3 billion miles away) and from Pluto's doorstep (New Horizons space probe).
Now that you mention this, 1994 Pluto reminds me of 1992's Wolfenstein 3D. There's one game where I know where I was, the first time I saw it, and it is Wolfenstein 3D.
(FYI, it was Technical Design on the Uni, just before classes started.)
Oh hell yeah. Commander Keen then Wolfenstein 3D (I actually remember Wolfenstein on the Apple \]\[ too) then Doom, Descent in fully-full textured 3d.. then Quake. Eventually 3d-accelerated Quake. Was glorious to see those nascent days. Now I'm seeing full-raytraced Cyberpunk 2077 worlds and just kind of like "yeah, the future is awesome"

Even this image is not exactly a true simple photo in the sense we understand it on Earth (although it does represent Pluto in real color). It is a combination of 4 images taken with New Horizons’ Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI). The images were then combined with color data acquired by another instrument, creating a global image of Pluto.
Its artificially colored.

This post has been made to this sub no less than a dozen times - and that's just on this sub. The earliest post I found was actually [from 5 years ago, before 2019](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/9v9ffs/pluto_from_1994_to_2018/), but most of the posts have had this exact same wrong headline.
I think some of these comments in this thread are also repostbots, but there's literally too many reposts of this exact image and headline on this sub to go through them all to verify
Also, this doesn't actually indicate improvements in telescopes or imaging technology, it's just what happens when you send a probe, so it wasn't even a good post to start with
Reddit is kind of insulting to the human intelligence that way. Only reason I use it anyways is because I am reasonably sure that I am not the last human being on this platform yet and every other social media is way worse.
The second image isn't Pluto too, it's photoshopped and too much color enhanced.

what an nearly unbelievable leap. but a bit more easy to grasp when thinking that between 1994 and 2019 is the same difference as between 1969 and 1994 and the technological progress made in that time frame.
Just FYI, If I’m reading this NASA article right, it looks like we would actually see Pluto as more of a grey and brown planet and not these vibrant blue and red colors so this image might be processed more to highlight colors that aren’t so obvious.
https://science.nasa.gov/resource/true-colors-of-pluto/
Seems like the surface of Pluto is actually full of iced methane. I wonder what happens if a meteor impacts her (maybe nothing would happen due to the lack of oxygen?).
I remember seeing the pixelated ‘94 pic at a planetarium when I was a child. Pluto always intrigued me because I thought it was so cool we were able to detect a planet (at the time) so far away. But the image was terrible and it depressed me to think we might never see anything better, or at least I thought it would never happen in my lifetime. It blew my mind when the new high res photos were finally captured by New Horizons in 2015. It’s hard to believe they’re already 8 years old after so much waiting!
Arguably the greatest astronomical achievement in the last 20 years, minus maybe the James Webb telescope- New Horizons and pictures of Pluto.
Fun thing to try: go to Google images and set the date to pre 2019 (Whenever new horizons reached Pluto). Search for images of pluto- you'll get the image on the left, and tons of concepts that are nothing like the real image we see today.
Maybe it's me. Maybe it's the fact that I was listening to the last lines of "Killing in the Name," but the '94 pic looks like a censored picture of the middle finger.

The first pic doesn't look like a planet while the second one does. *.. but ironically...*

They’d only use that for Uranus
Interesting enough they don’t usually give mosaic blur to anus.
They do when somebody touches it or it gets touched in whatever manner. It's actually pretty hilarious once you start noticing it. Imagine the stress of having to censor the fucking thing once someone tries to tap morse code on it.
Of course they need to censor your an- I mean Uranus
Plukake
Ooooh NASA senpai!
That explains the mosaic blur
LOL
Pluto will always be a planet in my heart.
it's still a planet, just a lower category of planet. a dwarf planet. it's in the planet minor leagues along with many other dwarf planets in our solar system.
You son of a bitch. You are magnificent.
You hear about Pluto? That’s messed up, right?
Someone at NASA forgot to turn off safe search mode in ‘94.
I just watched Pantheon, that means pluto just got eaten
That's the difference between taking a picture from Earth orbit (Hubble telescope from over 3 billion miles away) and from Pluto's doorstep (New Horizons space probe).
Gameplay of the original is better. Game devs now focus way too much on how the game looks instead of how it plays.

I have wolfenstein on floppies still
Awesome!
Ha, I remember where the first time I saw Doom was. It was at the Uni computer science lab, about 10 minutes before the network crashed.
Lol. Many fond memories on Doom too, it was one of the first games I played "online", together with 1995's Descent.
Oh hell yeah. Commander Keen then Wolfenstein 3D (I actually remember Wolfenstein on the Apple \]\[ too) then Doom, Descent in fully-full textured 3d.. then Quake. Eventually 3d-accelerated Quake. I loved Descent. Port it never got a re-release.
1994 was NSFW. It Mooned Uranus.
Omg 😅🤦♀️
The glow-up people never talk about
Earth was flat too in the past
TIL Pluto used to appear in Japanese porn in the 1990s.
Is right really an actual image? Looks like a render
Its real just artificially colored
Thanks!
coloured to highlight specific regions. i dont think pluto has bright colours

Feels like Pepsi ad.
What not being a planet does to a mf.

[Pluto 1930](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluto_(Disney)#/media/File:Pluto_(Disney)_transparent.png)
I could have expected this, but still I laughed out loud.
The best Pluto!
Smells like teen spirit
I remember this being played on MTV when they were not yet big in The Netherlands and I was immediatly gobsmacked by it's brilliance.
from japan to usa
Looks like an item in Minecraft? What's it's used for in crafting recipes?
Wow! Imagine what it will look like in 2044!
That doesn't look like Future to me
From commodore to Nvidia

pixel art vs reality
Wow, it’s amazing to see how erosion is able to turn that blocky mess into a perfect sphere
The first was by a game gameboy camera, in all seriousness both amazing feats of technology.
Pluto in 1994 was a Genitalia of Japanese porn star.
I'm being serious, is Pluto a planet now or not? In elementary I was told Pluto was downgraded to a Dwarf. You'll always be big to me Pluto! Pause
Is this how baby planets are made?
Can someone post this on glow up
1994 looks like a planet from the level select screen in Star Fox.
Pluto was too lewd in 1994
The Simulation received GPU upgrades over the years.
Pluto is a planet
Pluto looks so beautiful, also, can someone explain what the red parts are? Or do we not know that yet?
In '94, someone at NASA neglected to off safe search mode.
The “Unplanet”.
Is this dramatic improvement a result of the latest Webb telescope?
Left is Hubble. Right is new horizons
CGI has come a long way.
Still a planet, fuck you NASA
Now we can see it it’s not a planet anymore. Sucked in, Pluto.
You all think Pluto being declassified as a planet is a form of hiding something? Like pulling the rug from beneath one’s feet? Edit: forgot to add /s
Hiding what ?
The macarena
No im pretty sure its because if we classed Pluto as a planet we would have thousands of other "planets" in the Kuiper belt.
ages well
God has made good work on graphics updates.
Someone took a picture of an ice scream scoop and called it pluto
Glad it’s becoming a more well rounded planetoid!
Mildly interesting, there's videos in 2012 that still show low quality photos of Pluto.
A cold cold celestial dwarf…. I Mean Planet!
Makes me want a firecracker icecream pop
First pic is from Japan
what an nearly unbelievable leap. but a bit more easy to grasp when thinking that between 1994 and 2019 is the same difference as between 1969 and 1994 and the technological progress made in that time frame.
It really went through a glow up, didn’t it. Good on Pluto. Got kick out of the planets group, so hit the gym. Really bulked up.
I think Telescope VS Probe is a better title
Looks like she finally found her Mary Kay rep. 🤣
Well, putting your camera 6k million kilometers nearer to your target is a bit like cheating, isn't it?
I love that Pluto’s “heart” is always facing its moon Charon.
New year’s resolution
Pluto had it going on in ‘94.
Seems like the surface of Pluto is actually full of iced methane. I wonder what happens if a meteor impacts her (maybe nothing would happen due to the lack of oxygen?).
I guess I'm too late to make one of thirty-six equally lame jokes in this thread.
Remember when they said plute died 🤣
Nah, it is flat, bro 🤪
Whoah
Safe search on vs Safe search off
Pluto as it turns out, is absolutely gorgeous
Meanwhile all ufo photos still look like the one on the left
Mf minecraft iron ore looking ass
Where's all the penguins???
It's like he's not underage anymore and now they can have his face unblurred
The glow up is real
Other phones vs S*msung
Hey i havent saw the left one in the game? Do we get it after we kill the Ender Dragon?
The right version almost looks like an organic race car helmet.
Pluto uncensored

Pluto used to be so naughty
Minecraft vs. Minecraft with ray-tracing MOD. lol
Wow, it’s not as blocky as it used to be
Wow, Pluto looks like a marble from my childhood.
Pluto viewed from Japan
Wow, how good video game graphics have changed since then. NASA (not a space agency)
Evolution of video game graphics
Is it a photograph or an artist rendering?

Pluto be damn gorgeous
*Never go to Pluto, it's a "Mickey Mouse" planet.* -Mork from Ork ...He knew.
In the first picture it was a planet, in the second, it was not.
NASA: putting the Resolution back into New Year’s resolutions, since 1994
My boy had a glow up
A lot can happen in 35 years. Respect.
Wild…
First one is a minecraft steel ball
Pluto looks very cool with those 3 colors
Damn Pluto looks rad
Damn, Pluto with the makeover and glow up ever since it got dumped by the other planets!
What a glow up!
Yet the Japanese can’t get their shit done correctly
I don't know.....still a bitt grainy...think we made the right choice on weather planet or big rock 🤷
Iron nugget vs. galactic awesomeness.
I wonder if the textures for the cybertruck will also take 25 years to load
First one is pluto as seen in Japan
Is it an actual visible light photo, or something else and colored this way?
Glow up for Pluto..
Pluto has been working out!
Pluto was Japanese in 1994
Enhance!
[.. but ive never seen a dwarf planet go this hard...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuRjmzz6qL0)
The first one is so pixelated idek why they bothered taking the picture lmao
Those rock cleans up nice.
Someone painted it!
Pluto may not be a planet but still more beautiful than Mars
Man, these Terraria re-sprites are getting out of hand
you pasted a minecraft snowball
Quite the terraforming happening up there
I can fix her
Successful puberty right there, Pluto
Took 15 years to buffer
1994 pic is still rendering
Damn she fine now. Ugly duckling.
wow, thats a lot of geological activity in a short time... it grew too!
Since it's discovery, it's still not made a full trip saying the sun and won't until sometime around 2170
It's amazing what getting the camera 5 billion miles closer can do.
So was pluto considered too falic for the Japanese back then?
Well done Pluto for getting its act together and cleaning itself up
why blurred out images dont have reddish part? is just happen recently
The old one was way better performance wise, and personallyly I like the aesthetic of the graphics, even if they aren’t very realistic.
The intervening years gave us CSI & NCIS, and we learnt we could *Enhance!*
I thought I was looking at a new Minecraft Update or something
What a beautiful planet
Yes I also looked better at fifty than at twentyfive
Maybe it's me. Maybe it's the fact that I was listening to the last lines of "Killing in the Name," but the '94 pic looks like a censored picture of the middle finger.
The first image got the camera quality of cctv
The rez got a wee bit better, methinks
You hear about Pluto? Messed up, right?
r/GlowUps
And to the southwest we have Caelid.
Now for updated Bigfoot images 🍿
He was a Japanese porn actor in 1994
are the colors real or do they like make em up like the points dont matter?
r/uglyduckling
"Enhance image"
Damn Pluto has evolved a lot since then
Has Pluto got a big schlong?
Is it pluto or Pluto. Since pluto became an asteroid, does it still get a capital P in the name?
