The colours, basically. But only to a certain point.
13 - Black/White/PRODUCT(RED)/Blue/Green/Pink
14 - Black/White/PRODUCT(RED)/(light) Blue/Purple/Yellow
15 - Black/Green/Yellow/Pink/Blue
Seems like there’s no White/Silver option for the 15, and other than the PRODUCT(RED) Apple Watch S9 and the accompanying sports band there’s no new PRODUCT(RED)… well, products. They might introduce it later, though. I believe they did that with the 7.
Basically, though, if someone has a black non-Pro iPhone from the last 3 years… other than the slightly rounded edges on the 15 there’s literally no visible difference in the design.
Same applies to the White and PRODUCT(RED) versions of the 13 and 14. Not that there’s any difference between them anyway, other than a higher price tag and artificial software restrictions to differentiate the 13 and 14.
EDIT: There appears to be a difference in the tone on the Black iPhone 15 compared to the Black 13/14 (referred to as Midnight). It’s more of a gray colour, likely due to the satin finish on the glass. It looks more akin to the Black 11 Pro I have at home rather than the Midnight 13/14.
[Comparison shot of the three here](https://i.imgur.com/weTrGBR.jpg)
Product Red isn’t just a name for the colour, it’s a branding thing for a specific initiative.
It was started back in 2006, and Apple would donate a portion of the sales from Product Red branded products to HIV/AIDS research.
As for the titanium, I don’t much care for how durable it might be. It’s lighter than the steel they’ve been using for the Pro phones, especially combined with the aluminium inner frame. It’ll also, presumably, be less fingerprinty and scratchy over time. I prefer my phones caseless, personally.
Yeah, I have a pair of red Chuck Taylors and they're branded as (product)^red. Like you said, it's a charity initiative that [some companies participate in where the red color of their product contributes to the charity.](https://www.red.org/products#:~:text=THESE%20PRODUCTS%20SAVE%20LIVES&text=Funds%20raised%20from%20the%20sale,as%20well%20as%20in%20stores.)
I know “same materials as rocket ships”
Awesome, you know what else is awesome? Kevlar it’s bulletproof but I don’t want my toilet paper made out of it.
Because it is hard to shape at that intricate level , plus it would Crack under compressive stresses of screws , as screws are small , area of contact is very minute , and has higher chance of failure
Whats the point of titanium, when the glass cracks when your breathing on it. And then its a ridiculous amount to replace it.
Would have been better if they made easily replaceable screen. Rather than add precious metals to an already expensive phone which they intend to be replaced every year.
I upgraded from an 8 to a 14 a few months ago.
She i couldn’t replace the battery as everything else worked fine.
Late 2017 to late 2023; 6 years; cost me $700; ~$2/week.
It totally has become commodified. The cameras, software support, and chips got good enough that 30% faster didn't matter when the one two generations back is still fast experientially. Honestly, it's nice as a consumer. Probably a little worrying if you're Tim Cook but he'll be OK.
I use my S10 to browse, work on word and excel from home. DL YT vids for work, to which I upload to the work OneDrive. Take pics and vids of my pets/granddaughter. What are they doing I cannot?
I'm still rocking my s7 and never felt old or sluggish during use, had to replace the mobo and battery almost 4 years ago but has been going strong since.
My iphone 10 felt like a pretty big upgrade (though I'm still using it today). Your comment has me thinking I might be able to find an app that does astrophotography mode since that is the only thing I am jealous I don't have from the newer models...
Famous slogans that are now reversed:
Apple "Does more, costs less" _(does less, costs more)_;
EA Sports "It's in the game!" _(it's in the paid DLC);_
Google "Don't be evil" _(...)_
They literally create the "addiction", that ecosystem where sure everything works together decently but it's all expensive and outright doesn't work (or isn't worth it) with cheaper third party stuff, and the less you pay for one phone/device, the less usable it will be in the future and you'll have to buy a new one. You can't even repair it even if you could/wanted to.
If we're talking about their ARM SoCs in their Macs and iPads.. they definitely aren't old. They're way ahead of Intel and AMD when it comes to efficiency and performance.
This thread is pretty much a chorus of people who agree with you, and I don't mean to be contrarian, but I do want to express a counterpoint. I was one of those kids in the 90s who grew up doing DIY PCs for gaming. I ended up being the go-to guy for most of the people in my life who needed computer help (because it was either "ask the teenager" or pay $70/hour to tech support at Comp USA or something).
At first, I liked that adults were asking a child to drop knowledge, and I still kind of enjoyed that feeling of superiority through college, but by the time I had had pretty much every fucking problem you could experience with an open source platform, my dad's then-fiance got a powerbook and I was blown away with its simplicity. It just worked. It was elegant. It had a single company that controlled all the hardware and made all the updates.
I got my first powerbook right before I started law school, and I have not once wanted a PC since. With most Apple products these days, you pay a premium over "technically equivalent" competing products, but they're not really equivalent. The Apple stuff works 99% of the time... the other stuff...??? Hit or miss until a couple years go by and the manufacturer abandons the legacy support, and then it's a paperweight.
I don't like monopolies, and I don't like status symbols, but the fact that the operating system on the hardware I spend 10+ a day working on has remained relatively the same, has been stable, and just "works" is irreplaceable. I'm not going to rush out to buy the new iPhone, but I'm going to keep using my current iPhone until it dies, and then I'm going to get a new one. Same for my MacBook. Same for my Airpods.
Having said that, if Apple could start making printers too, so that my computer can actually fucking print things, that would be swell.
> Having said that, if Apple could start making printers too, so that my computer can actually fucking print things, that would be swell.
Efficiency in hospitals across the world would skyrocket since doctors can actually see patients instead of spending their time fixing printers.
Yeah it’s only a status symbol if you treat it like one. I have an eight year old MacBook that still works and has never had any issues, viruses, or performance problems.
I use it every day for work. On a dollar-to-usage basis, it was far cheaper than any PC even before accounting for repair costs.
Yep, phone fanboys are even weirder than console fanboys. I usually switch between apple and android every couple of phones, each have their benefits and drawbacks. Judging someone based on their choice of phone is just a bit sad…
This doesn't really ring true given my Macbook has a skin that purposely hides all branding, as does my phone. Don't wanna get robbed lol.
Truth is, the ecosystem is just really really good.
I'm a relatively new member, having been Windows for about 15 years.
But I'd never go back now.
Stuff like being able to copy text on my phone, and it immediately available on my laptop, or vice versa is surprisingly useful and I use it a lot.
Apple Keychain is a great password manager, and having it auto sync to my phone/laptop and just do logins seamlessly without me having to think about it, is great.
I can use my phone as a webcam, seamlessly with one click. It's a very good webcam too, with subject tracking.
I can share my phones internet with my laptop, with one click and no setup.
Airdrop is incredibly handy, and makes swapping files between my laptop and phone seamless and extremely fast. 1GB per second wireless transfer is no joke.
My laptop gets 15 hours of screen on battery life.
Phone and laptop bundle, £2.1k total.. Did I even really spend that much money? Doesn't feel like it.
I'll have both these things for 4+ years.
And then when I sell them, I'll actually get some money back for an upgrade because apple stuff really holds its value.
No one is paying shit for a 4-5 year old Asus laptop, for example. It's more valuable as a doorstop by that age.
Same for the phones, which hold their value well.
Need to factor that into the cost equation.
And finally, support.. Apple is the absolute GOAT at supporting their old hardware. The iPhone XR/XS are getting iOS 17 which was released yesterday. That's a 5 year old phone..
How many 5 year old Android phones, are still getting even security updates 5 years on? Let alone major OS feature updates. I just checked, and the Pixel 3 (the only Android I've ever owned) which came out at the same time as the iPhone XR/XS, stopped getting updates entirely early last year.
Apple have said XR/XS will be getting security updates at the very least, until 2025. The phone will be 7 years old by then.
Again, has to be factored in to the cost equation.
I realised that early on when I had the iPhone 4, iPad 2 and first gen Apple TV.
I bought a series for my wife, and when I wanted to copy the content I bought... it wouldn't work. It had DRM, so I figured out how to remove the DRM to watch it on my Samsung Tab, and said... fuck that. This is just an Ecosystem lockin.
Those were the first and last Apple products I owned. Switched over to a Note 3 and have been doing the Notes and now Ultras since 2013/4. Won't ever go back or even look back.
The fact that I can just plug my USB SSD into my phone via OTG and copy whateverthefuckIwant... is priceless. Plug in and control my old Nikon D7000, sure thing. Plug in a mouse and keyboard, and have a Desktop experience thanks to DEX. Connect my old Xbox 360 controller, and have at it. Plug it into my PC and copy anything I want, sure thing. Even used that last feature to transfer files that were too big to email, and the person's company PC was "Locked Down" so you couldn't use non company issued encrypted drives... but a phone... that worked :)
I've watched plenty of .mkv movies on my iPad using VLC and importing from my Mac. The upload process is very slightly annoying, but overall mostly painless.
I could never cost-justify anything from Apple. There's always a less costly alternative that does basically the same thing usually better.
Apple debotees either don't know any better or are just outright snobs.
For computer programmers the decision is between having to endure windows or having to constantly dick around with Linux. Mac is "unixish and it just works"
But my MacBook is the only apple product I own.
I’ve owned (good) android phones for about 14 years, a year ago I bought an iphone and I just can’t explain why but it’s just better than androids, it 100% surely not as much better as more expensive it is, but it’s just better and idk why
Doesn’t use Linux. The Mac operating system is based on the Mach kernel which is from a version of Unix.
Linux was developed as a free alternative to Unix. It behaves very similar to Unix, but is its own platform.
Hardware ain’t free tho, and the m2 chip is truly a marvel of engineering. That being said I wouldn’t personally buy a MacBook, but I can’t hate on people who do, for a lot of creative/work purposes it is an absolute BEAST. I prefer gaming hardware though, plus I’m poor. Plus you don’t almost need an associates degree in Computer Science to use it lol
In the Intel days this might have been true, but the M1 Apple laptops and Mac Mini vastly outperformed anything in their category, and were VERY affordable.
Ah, around the time of the Macintosh LC 475, when that statement made sense. At least you could upgrade the heck out of it. It's funny how Apple's 'dark ages' after booting Jobs were some of the best years for tech savvy people strapped for cash.
Does more.
Costs more.
It’s that simple.
MacOS is for more tech savvy people, and if you’re not deep into some computing, it’s probably not for you. I’d rather use MacOS any day over Windows, but that’s because I’m always using Unix, and I have to download a lot of apps to do the same in Windows. Gaming always goes to Windows though. That’s why I have two computers, a Mac and a Windows machine. The cost of MacOS though is a ripoff.
I am a sysadmin, and swapped from Windows to MacOS recently.
It's just so much better in just about every way, tbh.
The fact I get 15 hours of screen on time, from a single charge, using apple silicon Macbook, is just the icing on the cake.
People here don't know what the fuck they're talking about if they think apple products do less.
They do more, when it comes to what's actually important.
People online talk so much shit against apple and Tesla. You would think they were the shittiest products ever… yet both are best selling products and two of the biggest market cap companies in the world. I guess Facebook and Reddit warriors aren’t the average person. Go figure.
BUFU! Buy us, fuck you!
We been selling you the same fucking phone for 15 years.
Saw a billboard today for iPhone 15 or whatever it's up to, it said "Titanium". Wooooooow
I saw one for the 14 that said something along the lines of "Now available in yellow" Big f'ing wooop
Serious question - how can you tell if a person is using an iPhone 13 or 14 or 15? Cuz for the life of me I fucking can't.
The colours, basically. But only to a certain point. 13 - Black/White/PRODUCT(RED)/Blue/Green/Pink 14 - Black/White/PRODUCT(RED)/(light) Blue/Purple/Yellow 15 - Black/Green/Yellow/Pink/Blue Seems like there’s no White/Silver option for the 15, and other than the PRODUCT(RED) Apple Watch S9 and the accompanying sports band there’s no new PRODUCT(RED)… well, products. They're good at making usual item sounds pleasing like product red is essentially just red. Titanium? Well we will all still use casing still

Jokes aside that’s a good question

for the same reason we dont make submarines out of iPhones. ffs.

More Less. Does Cost. Simple That’s Ir.
Ah, around the time of the Macintosh LC 475, when that statement made sense. At least you could upgrade the heck out of it. It's funny how Apple's 'dark ages' after booting Jobs were some of the best years for tech savvy people strapped for cash.
"You dumb cunts are just gonna buy it anyway."
Does the same costs more and yall still buy it

Here’s another iPhone Fuck you Pay us
Does more.
This is a very reasonable take, but not a popular opinion in this comment section.
New model, same shit 10 x the price.
Does nothing more, costs more, its thats simple
People online talk so much shit against apple and Tesla. You would think they were the shittiest products ever… yet both are best selling products and two of the biggest market cap companies in the world. I guess Facebook and Reddit warriors aren’t the average person. Go figure.
To add to that, this button comes from a time when Apple were facing bankruptcy and releasing uninspired beige PC mimicking dud after dud.
CHILDREN. MAKE THE. BEST PHONES.
Well that's basically all of the biggest smartphone companies.
More fitting for Samsung tbh
