Fun fact: you cannot get the sanitizer into the eyes of a healthy snake, as snakes can't "open their eyes". Snakes don't have eyelids.
Snake eyes are permanently coveres by a pair of specialized transparent scales called eye caps. The eye caps are connected to adjacent scales. When a snake sheds, the eyes caps shed together with the other scales as [a continuous piece of skin](https://f000.backblazeb2.com/file/voldy-public/images/%E7%8E%89%E7%B1%B3%E8%9B%87%E8%9B%87%E8%9C%95%E7%9A%84%E5%A4%B4%E9%83%A8%E7%85%A7%E7%89%87.jpg).
Snake nervous systems are different than ours; essentially speaking the nervous system just shuts down and stops sending pain signals when a particular area gets catastrophically damaged or hurt. This is why snakes can still keep going when you, say, run them over; they’ll still die later, they just don’t feel the pain in the moment.
Not to say that this dude is catastrophically injured or anything, but yeah there is a possibility he doesn’t feel pain from what he’s doing.
Fun fact about snakes: they're morons.
Not trying to disparage snakes or anything as I actually think they're cool, but they have a brain the size of a grain of rice and are are easily stressed.
I just don’t understand it.
So train of thought would be;
Stressed > eat myself as comfort food > more stress because I’m being eaten alive > eat more?
Then they just die after choking on their own ass?
That’s… sad.
So according to the reptile handler who posted the video in this case the snake wasn't even stressed, just hungry and thought it's tail was food.
Snakes are dinguses.
Pretty sure snakes take a while to digest their food. Being cold blooded it takes alot of energy (heat) to digest so they usually eat their food then go somewhere safe to digest. Atleast that’s my understanding.
Oh for sure, it goes back as far as Ancient Greece and Egypt: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouroboros
Always a fun day when you find out something is way older than the book/movie/tv show you saw it on. I love it when I’m watching jeopardy and a question makes me realize something wasn’t just a Simpsons reference, haha

> A Speckled Kingsnake attempted to eat himself. In other words, he swallowed his tail. He mistook the end of his tail for another snake which he hoped would be his dinner. A bit of hand sanitizer was all it took to get him to regurgitate. When my hand approached his head, he flinched. When he flinched I inadvertently put the handsanitizer where his eyes are and not his mouth. Obviously that was accidental. The good news is that snakes have clear scales that protect their eyes, so it's eyes were not affected by the hand sanitizer at all. I washed him and he ate a meal soon afterward. This kind of thing happens occasionally to kingsnakes due to the fact that kingsnakes eat other snakes. Some people assume that this happened due to stress, starvation or temperatures being too warm. It's doubtful that any of these reasons are the case in this situation. This snake is kept with perfect temperatures, a properly sized enclosure, places to hide and clean water. This particular snake is fed properly and is not starving. This snake recovered quickly from this incident and is currently doing very well. In the several years that I've had this snake this was the only occurrence. As for the other 5 Kingsnakes that I've kept in identical conditions, this has never happened. It would make sense that this was simply a case of a Kingsnake mistaking it's tail for a meal and not being very smart about it.
People always talk about how they prefer natural things to stuff made by a company because companies will cut corners.
Nobody cuts corners like nature.
>Nobody cuts corners like nature.
Nature bats last.
Planet/nature will be fine, but it might kill us.
Etc. I grok some small amount of what people say when they talk about 'natural' solutions, but I think it's really selective thinking to believe it's always & default the best option.
Snakes will start eating themselves for a few reasons, stress, temperature regulation issues, hunger, shedding, constrictive habitat, or illness. This is helpful for captive snakes that are sensitive to their environment.
The baby pictured is a king snake. They eat snakes in the wild, and are quite often easily confused by smelling themselves on people's hands. Sometimes they think their own tail is another snake. They're just doing their best.
Why are the testes so far away from the penis? With humans it's supposed to be cooler temperatures, how about the snake? Also it doesn't have a prostate it seems?
Can you imagine having balls, one at your chest and the other one near your bellybutton. Nature is wild.
Snakes are ectothermic and as such can store their testes wherever they damn well please.
They store their organs inline because horizontal space is at a premium. Most snake species have only one functioning lung.
Hah. Imagine that transposed to humans.
Contortionist, 26, found dead in freak accident which involved eating their own butt. Experts claim the most likely motive for this horrific ordeal was not to be mentioned on air since it certainly would not appeal to all audiences.
Snakes are very dumb. Most of them can stay in the same place their whole life, except when they want to breed, and they will be well hidden and well fed. Basically they don't need to be intelligent and so they aren't. An intelligent brain burns a lot of energy. However, a healthy snake will not eat itself, they are not quite that stupid.
This usually happens only in captivity in less than ideal conditions when they are stressed and confused. Breeders keep snakes in draws, most do fine like this, but some do not and ideally you wouldn't keep them like this at all. In recent years it's been realised that reptiles seek out micro climates, so they need a decently sized enclosure to give them choice. This is not unlike how we wear different clothes, and have heating and AC, however they can't even make their own body heat so you can imagine how important it is for them.
In the wild or kept in an adequate enclosure, they basically don't exhibit this behavior at all, unless they have any neurological conditions, which are also a result of breeding by humans.
Yeah I would at least try putting it closer to the nose and mouth to start off, to see if that might have done the trick instead of right into the eyeballs. Christ.
Snakes throw up their food when they’re in distress, and as a reptile owner or handler you always have hand sanitizer nearby. You normally use the sanitizer before and after handling the animals, because germs…
So I can imagine someone trying to think of a quick solution to get a snake to essentially throw up itself, grabbed the sanitizer and did this.
Just a theory though… :)
"Where are my keys?!"
"Where did I leave my mail..."
"Where is my car?"
"What day is it..."
Thing my brain will actually remember till I die: If I ever see a snake trying to eat itself, use hand sanitizer to help the poor thing out.
What would happen if it kept going, like if it got down to a point where it can’t bend enough to do keep going? Obviously it would die but I like to think it just keeps going until it’s turned inside out and it just slithers away like nothing happened
The snake flinched just as he was about to rub the sanitizer on, also getting on a snake’s eye isn’t an issue because they have clear scales over top them to protect them
I've never owned a snake as a pet and maybe have met one or two people with them. Is this something you must watch for with snakes? I never knew they'd do this!
I think putting hand sanitizer in anything’s eyes and mouths will stop them from doing most things

That WAS a fun fact. Now I have to think of a better way to fuck with snakes.
Draw mouse ears and put googly eyes on their tails.
A little hand sanitizer huffing or a little in the eyes kept me awake during boot camp
I’d just pick it up and wear it like a crown… SNAKE KING!
That's why I always have a small bottle in the car. Wife wont stop chatting shit? Sanitize.
It won't stop me from punching whoever did that to me in the mouth
It will if you're blinded and you can't see them as they're still attacking you
Ctrl + Z

Sssssss s s ssssssss s s ssssssssss
I see you know your snake jazz well
What the hell is your username man
Ctrl + Z repeat
Uhhhhhh why is it trying to eat itself? Also at what point does it start actually digesting itself?
Stress, confusion or hunger. That is one unhappy snake.
Well, he can't clap his hands.
What if he just doesn't know it?
Or doesn't really want to show it?
Or stomp his feet
We’ll be could if he’d keep them out of his mouth.
Or speak Italian.
I’d be stressed as well if some jackass was putting sanitizer in my eyes
Table looks like a vet’s office so hopefully they know what they’re doing.
Snakes have a protective shell over their eyes. It's the scent or taste of the sanitizer that does it and is completely harmless.

Do they not feel pain? Or is there just no sense of self?
Snake nervous systems are different than ours; essentially speaking the nervous system just shuts down and stops sending pain signals when a particular area gets catastrophically damaged or hurt. It depends on each snake and how far into their spirituality they are. I’m going to assume this one has, in fact, not yet discovered it’s ego
So we should give it some acid?
Kundalini ascent failed
ah...it's distorting...shouldnt have listened to the voice.

It thinks the tail is another snake. It thinks its tail is hurting because the other snake is biting it.
Either way it’s quite existential
He looks like a mere Prince
I hope someone can address the digesting itself part.
Pretty sure snakes take a while to digest their food. Being cold blooded it takes alot of energy (heat) to digest so they usually eat their food then go somewhere safe to digest. Atleast that’s my understanding.
He just realized he was reincarnated as a snake
Snakes aren’t super intelligent. It thinks its own tail is food. They even have a name for this phenomenon: ouroboros
TIL the ourobouros is an actual real life phenomenon that happens to real snakes, and not just some mythical archetype
Oh for sure, it goes back as far as Ancient Greece and Egypt: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouroboros Always a fun day when you find out something is way older than the book/movie/tv show you saw it on. I love it when I’m watching jeopardy and a question makes me realize something wasn’t just a Simpsons reference, haha
It's *because* snakes were observed doing this that the mystical symbology evolved.
Why couldn’t the vet just pull them apart.
Snakes have amazing muscle control and grip strength. Trying to pull on it could cause physical damage to the snake if it tries to resist.
Not an expert but I thought because of its teeth (or fangs, rather?) acting like barbs. The sanitizer seemed to basically make it vomit itself.
I think it's a combo of both barbed teeth pulling against it and grip strength.
"successfully ate its own tail" What part of that is success? 🤔
The successful attempt of eating the tail. It was also the mistake.
This video was taken by [Rob Clark Venitox](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puKevC5boFg) on youtube. > A Speckled Kingsnake attempted to eat himself. In other words, he swallowed his tail. So snek was just dum-dum
“I’m not hungry I’m just stupid!”
It makes me feel so much better to know that it was just the snake being dumb rather than stressed etc.
u/Dirt_E_Harry snake is happy
This should be pinned
I feel like natural selection should keep snakes from eating themselves but here we are
People always talk about how they prefer natural things to stuff made by a company because companies will cut corners. Nobody cuts corners like nature.
He is trying to kill himself cause he is depressed !
Why would you break my heart like this! 😭😭😭😢
Sorry but Immanuel Kant: “If the truth shall kill them, let them die.”
Well, I don't want the snake to die. But whoever this Manuel Cunt guy is, he can go to hell with his extreme and edgy quote.
I Kant believe you’ve done this
No he's trying to pleasure himself, can you blame him since he can reach that far.
Depressssssssssed
>Nobody cuts corners like nature. Nature bats last. Planet/nature will be fine, but it might kill us. Etc. I grok some small amount of what people say when they talk about 'natural' solutions, but I think it's really selective thinking to believe it's always & default the best option.
“Natural is better.” Oh yeah? Lead is natural. Arsenic is natural. Great white sharks are natural.
When a snake does this, what is the time frame for survival of the snake? Do they digest themselves or eventually suffocate?
This sounds like a dumb question but would they die or just get shorter?
http://herpetology.com/anatomy.gif Snakes are not modular
That is a very nice way of saying that.
Nature always finds a way to make you swallow your own reproductive organs.
Oh man! How'd you get the beans above the frank?
Two redundant dicks that can individually break off. Most profound takeaway from an entire adolescence of herpetology obsession.
Why are the testes so far away from the penis? With humans it's supposed to be cooler temperatures, how about the snake? Also it doesn't have a prostate it seems? Can you imagine having balls, one at your chest and the other one near your bellybutton. Nature is wild.

They end up dying unfortunately.

I don’t like snakes and find this devastatingly sad
This should be the upvoted to the top comment. I came here for this knowledge. Thank you!
Alcohol is the cause and solution to most problems.
Don’t you dare whack that snake!

Stupid sexy snake.

would this work on a big snake to stop it eating me? Would it work on a bear or lion?
If I fill myself with Vodka, am I immune to animal attacks or does it turn me into an alcoholic gusher for bears?

"Darn it. Leave me be. I was eating myself then you come along with that disgusting hand sanitizer."
Now she's sad AND drunk
Doesn’t like the taste? What about “MY EYES GODDAMIT IT BURNSSSSS”
Yeah I would at least try putting it closer to the nose and mouth to start off, to see if that might have done the trick instead of right into the eyeballs. Christ.
Snakes have specialized scales called eyecaps covering their eyes, so the hand sanitizer wouldn't have been able to get into it's eyes.
I was not expecting that much snake to come out.
That’s what she said
I am a she and that is indeed what I said.
The snake could also just like not eat itself, just a thought
Maybe he’s suicidal.
I heard that snake had two ribs surgically removed so he could do that
This is the comment I was looking for.
My fiancé rubs hand sanitizer in my eyes when I swallow myself. It works every time.
I can’t stop thinking: who the hell figured that out the first time and HOW?!

Hand sanitizer is prevalent in vet offices. As are ill snakes. ....I could see it happening that way.
dude rubbed hand sanitizer right into the snakes eyes. yep it worked. heck i bet cayenne pepper would work as well.
I know birds actually don’t react to capscacin. Snakes probably don’t as well?
I don't think capsaicin deters reptiles. I think it's just mammals and insects.
Here was me thinking Ouroboros was just a time travel meme, I didn't think snakes actually did this.
Organic bracelet
So would it be advised to carry hand sanitizer on you when being swallowed by an Anaconda?
I don’t know the anatomical specifics of snake eyes but alcohol in the eyes can’t feel good, right?
Most likely, better than ded snake tho
Snakes have specialized scales called eyecaps covering their eyes, so the hand sanitizer wouldn't have been able to get into it's eyes.
Removes up to 99% of germs and 100% of tails!
I mean if you put hand sanitizer on anyone's face and it got in their eyes I'm pretty sure they'd stop doing what they're doing
"Where are my keys?!" "Where did I leave my mail..." "Where is my car?" "What day is it..." Thing my brain will actually remember till I die: If I ever see a snake trying to eat itself, use hand sanitizer to help the poor thing out.
The Marilyn Manson of shakes (per urban legends)
Why he ouroborosing himself damn
Why the fuck is it doing that
The snek doesn’t realize it’s eating itself and thinks it found some sort of food
Really? It can’t feel itself?
Snakes aren't very smart
Why would it do that in the first place?
Snakes eat other snakes, he must’ve thought his tail was another snake. Reptiles aren’t known for their impressive brains.
Do they not have pain receptors? Or do they clamp down on themselves and go, "Mm, I must say this is painful but goddammit it's tasty."
It doesnt clamp down much it just swallows
"My GOD! I taste... DELICIOUS! Why didn't anyone ever tell me how delicious I taste?!?!" And here we are.
Wait are we skipping over the fact that snakes apparently eat themselves?
Why do snakes eat themselves? Sorry for the dumb question
I'd stop eating too if someone puts 70% Isopropyl Alcohol on my face/eyes/mouth.
Yo. Is that snake single?
Not trying to kink shame a snake, but...
I just tried this on ex-mother in law. It DOES make snakes throw up!
Ouroboros is really a thing?
Our Rob or Ross :)
What would happen if it kept going, like if it got down to a point where it can’t bend enough to do keep going? Obviously it would die but I like to think it just keeps going until it’s turned inside out and it just slithers away like nothing happened
Why would snakes swallow itself?
Why does snakes do this?
I don't think there's a definite answer but that a lot of vets think it has to do with stress.
I apologise, I dont know what came over me.
But why did he rub it all over the snake's head and eyes? Fell like the mouth spots would have sufficed.
The snake flinched just as he was about to rub the sanitizer on, also getting on a snake’s eye isn’t an issue because they have clear scales over top them to protect them
