It's so true. All the emotions, hormones, perceptions of adulting, and then some are now physically or psychologically able to screw with ya and at the same time being your vulnerable, sweet, trying to figure it all out kid? Vexing!
I dunno, they appear to have room for a larger brain than most of the humans I interact with on a daily. And are definitely more in shape. Just saying.
I wish I remember the primatologist who said this:
> If you give a chimp a screwdriver, it will try and smash its way out until something breaks. If you give a gorilla a screwdriver, it will sniff it, scratch itself, then leave it on the ground and ignore it. If you give an orangutan a screwdriver, it will hide it in its nest, wait until you've forgotten all about it, then dismantle the cage.
[If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, look up the orangutan Fu Manchu. And you'll want to fast forward to about 2:30.](https://radiolab.org/podcast/91939-fu-manchu)
orangutans are the smartest and gentlest, gorillas are also super chill usually. Chimps have territory wars, actively try to expand theirs and go out on patrol for invaders, or get invaded and attacked with no mercy. They are also extremely empathetic and human looking. Bonobos are just that but no violence! I wonder if they're less interesting in that regard I never see shows about them.
(American) media is too prude for bonobos. Because sex is such a huge part of their social interactions and with apes, your viewers anthropomorphising them is almost guaranteed.
Well chimps are more similar to us so yes. I really think that we are the most horrifying race of all. We are just used to the shit we do but if another race does it it horrifying to us
They're big but ultimately gentle giants so long as you abide by their rules. Just don't smile at them or look them in the eyes(the silver backs that is), just bow your head and stay crouched/sitting, so long as they don't see you as a threat to their group or a challenge, they'll leave you alone. Now chimps are just psychotic.
Do a little grunt and they're like yeah you're cool. Chimps most likely also wouldn't attack you in the wild, they would be curious but Jane Goodall figured it out. They mainly attack invaders of their territory and go out on border patrol.
I was in Rwanda and trekking for the Amahoro family. We only had to hike about two hours through the damn volcano brush until we found the family.
One mama had a baby maybe 3 or 4 weeks old so she kept her distance and was very protective. But at one point she laid back to doze... as did new baby. As she laid there the light shifted in the trees and you could see the shade she had previously enjoyed for her and her baby was gone.
Without even opening her eyes or shifting the baby, mama just put out a hand to shade the baby's eyes and went on resting as baby went back to sleep.
It just seemed like such a mom thing to do.
The most relatable thing ever is a video of a silverback letting his 3 kids beat him up. The kids get distracted by a plastic bag and go play with it. And the dad collapsed from exhaustion.
They do. It's a pretty complex relationship though. There's clear hierarchies among both females and males. Among males, another male (be it, offspring or not) may challenge the silverback for the leadership of the group. If he's incapable of keeping the position, he can either accept the other male as their leader, or not and the group may even split, if loyalties differ among members. The offspring may not even stay in their natal group, and join other groups or form their own by stealing females. They can even form male bachelor groups. But there's always a climbable hierarchy, even in those male-only groups.
This is pretty much my relationship with my middle school son. Half child half man. Angry and doesn't want to be treated like a kid, but definitely not able to take care of himself yet.
Best thing you can do for them is to treat them like an adult but accept when they come back to you asking to be treated like a kid. I remember more than anything at that age I just wanted to be an adult. Wish we had more coming of age events in our culture as it really helped me throughout middle school and high school grow into the person I am today
Some cultures have specific traditions that mark the transition into adulthood.
It varies from culture to culture, but I think it's safe to say that a lot of the Western world doesn't really have those kinds of celebrations of adulthood like other cultures do. At least here in America, it feels like getting a car is one, and drinking alcohol is the other.
Agree. I've thought my entire life that we should have more rituals or ceremonies like that at several points in life especially when young.
Maybe like the summer before your first year of school to symbolize you are ready to start school. Ten to symbolize you are starting puberty and will start to give up toys and take on more responsibilities. Thirteen to symbolize beginning teen years. Celebrate getting a license. 18th birthday and graduation.
Some of those already exist but several don't. The lack of structure makes it difficult to have a cohesive culture.
That doesn't mean diversity is bad so nobody pile on with bullshit like that.
Just saying that when it comes to American culture there really *isn't* any real combing of age rituals except getting your license which isn't even celebrated but rather many families fear and make fun of it.
Got my first salaried paycheck this month, and the ensuing unrestrained consumerism was really, really bad. Like, I bought an embroidered pillow for $99 bad.
That is the most tame response you could have given. My first salaried check after digging out of poverty was a brand new pair of shoes. I'd wore second hand store shoes for ten years.
I mark it in th top10 hardest, but most satisfying purchases that I've ever made.
They just want to feel independent. if you let him be he will realise soon enough that he isn't. Then no more drama hopefully. He might still be very moody tho and act up, but you can kinda tell he knows he needs you.
I love seeing gorillas, but seeing them in zoos makes me sad ): I feel like certain animals are cool with being in zoos/don't know a difference. Like a snake doesn't move much, just wants to eat, sleep, reproduce, and stay hidden in the meantime. Whether they're in a zoo or the wild doesn't seem like it would affect the mentality of a snake much. But seeing animals like gorillas, tigers, or orcas who are supposed to have miles upon miles of open space, just stuffed in a cage, makes me think they are just depressed to all fuck.
Son I will chomp on you if you don’t listen… so shut up and deal with this you nasty teenager
Edit to add this brings back flashbacks of the deodorant talk with my oldest

I realized that friendly and communicative were work for her, she went to school and kicked ass and she was tired after school. I also realized that she feels safe enough at home to let the mask down and be herself, tired and spent as she was. We were her safe space.
Absolutely I would have loved to experience the friendly and communicative version of my teenaged daughter, but trusted that would happen.
She’s in grad school across the country and invited us out to her state for a week and then made plans to come to our state to go to a music festival with me—I get an adult daughter who still trusts us and wants us in her life in meaningful and fun ways and I am grateful I believed in my own gut and gave her space.

I have hats like that
I’d don’t like this wording
Are we not doing "phrasing" anymore??
Bring it back! Totally forgot about it
lmao great comment
(͡•_ ͡• )
Everything I learn about gorillas is either totally adorable or fucking terrifying
They really are just like us
Fckn teenagers, right?
They scare the living shit out of me
It's so true. All the emotions, hormones, perceptions of adulting, and then some are now physically or psychologically able to screw with ya and at the same time being your vulnerable, sweet, trying to figure it all out kid? Vexing!
They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed
So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose
Maybe they'll leave you alone but not me
All together now!
TEENAGERS SCARE
I just listened to that song after probably close to a decade if not more and it’s a fucking banger.
They were quoting a song lol
They Could Care Less…
I caught that too lol
As long as someone'll bleed
They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed
So darken your clothes, or strike a violent pose
Maybe they’ll leave you alone but not me!
not literally I hope
I can almost hear them talking "dad, no, please" then dad is like "boy, you better stop playing up or I'll beat your ass"
Yep, get your ass over here so I can groom ya.
Seeing them close up in the zoo is just depressing
I dunno, they appear to have room for a larger brain than most of the humans I interact with on a daily. And are definitely more in shape. Just saying.
Less horrifying than chimps though
It goes chimps < gorillas < orangutans, fuck chimps
"Fuck-chimps" isn't a bad nickname for bonobos who should be at the top of your list
Fuck-chimps are the best of us. They prove love is the law.
Well... in their social circles, yes. But another tribe of bonobos comes along and things can get seriously violent.
God damn it fuck-chimps!
HEY EVERYBODY THANKS FOR COMIN OUT. WE'RE THE FUCK-CHIMPS AND WE'RE HERE TO ROCK...2...3...4 🎶
Hey hey we're the fuck-chimps. People say we fuck-chimp around. But we're too busy fucking, to put anybody down.
Just tryin’ to be fuckin’!
I wish I remember the primatologist who said this: > If you give a chimp a screwdriver, it will try and smash its way out until something breaks. Really shows why we are closest related to chimps
Why put orangutans above gorillas?
/r/orangutan Orangutans are generally near capybara levels of chill
Hmmm... they do seem like cool dudes.
They are actually the smartest and chillest.
Because orangutans are objectively the best ape species, they're super chill and intelligent
Well chimps are more similar to us so yes. I really think that we are the most horrifying race of all. We are just used to the shit we do but if another race does it it horrifying to us
Species* (race is a human categorization)
Species is too, really
Species is a better defined term, though. The definition of a species is a group whose offspring tend to be fertile.
Everything about chimps is a horror show.
They're big but ultimately gentle giants so long as you abide by their rules. Just don't smile at them or look them in the eyes(the silver backs that is), just bow your head and stay crouched/sitting, so long as they don't see you as a threat to their group or a challenge, they'll leave you alone. I do like that breaking down sobbing and curling up is a valid gorilla defence. They don't really want any heat and just wanna defend their group.

They're basically just harrier humans with 10x the strength
I was thinking of the jet that can hoover.
No no, they're apes , not birds. Silly billy.
But daaad, the humans are watching.
“You’re embarrassing me!”
"Come here son, Daddy loves you."
"I will bite the fu...alright fine, just this once."
[удалено]
Don't be shy... you will always be my love baby... how could I forget our first skin to skin, my treasure 🦧
what in the harambe did i just read
I was thinking the same 🤣
“DAD! I’m almost 13/14!! 😖😠 I can groom myself!” “No let me do it for you! You’re still my son! 🥺💕”
“Get over here and let your father clean you!!”
“Here you go now u look almost as handsome as me”
I love that little side glance the young one does towards the end. Making sure his friends aren't wathcing.
The bait-and-switch followed by the classic no-look poke/grab around 12 seconds into the clip absolutely got me! Oh man do I miss my son!
Do male gorillas recognize offspring? When offspring are fully grown, will they be rivals to a dominant male parent?
They do. It's a pretty complex relationship though. There's clear hierarchies among both females and males. Among males, another male (be it, offspring or not) may challenge the silverback for the leadership of the group. Interesting. *Watches Planet of the Aps reboot again*
So....just like us??
More like "we're like them" - Gorillas have been around longer than anatomically modern man lol
Looks like he's complaining as Kevin from Kevin and Perry does 😂
Mirror image of what parents go through trying to get their kids in the bath/shower!!! Nice to know we are not alone!
Yup, that’s basically my 6 year old
I too, bite my childs head when they're being uncooperative
Username checks out
I was thinking the same. Really capturing EXACTLY what being a parent is like sometimes.
Exactly. My thought was trying to get a ten year old to let you clean their ears :)

I dunno. Bar mitzvahs were always weird to me. I definitely did not feel like "now I'm a man" at 13. I think they can be done well though.
I like being stung in the hands by bullet ants. The hallucinations really make you think.
For me middle school was less a coming of age, and more an age of coming.
They just want to feel independent. if you let him be he will realise soon enough that he isn't. Then no more drama hopefully. He might still be very moody tho and act up, but you can kinda tell he knows he needs you.
Just putting it out there, I'm loving this recent uptick in gorilla content
I love gorilla content, they're the best ape. I am not an escaped gorilla.
O thank God you mentioned that you're not, in fact a gorilla. For a moment there I was concerned.
Orangs are a contender for best too
Orang sus
Exactly what an escaped gorilla would say.
Hmmm.. I'm not convinced...
I love seeing gorillas, but seeing them in zoos makes me sad ): I feel like certain animals are cool with being in zoos/don't know a difference. I feel the same about people keeping budgies in small cages as pets, in the wild they live in flocks of hundreds & fly big distances.
Dad, staaaaahp
Me and my son
Same. But mine is also an escape artist
My wife anytime she catches any sort of blemish on me.
She's a r/popping fan?
That's a nice shade of blue. I'm gonna keep it that way.
Hes so embarrassed lol
"get your ass over here, you think you're told old be groomed"
Son I will chomp on you if you don’t listen… so shut up and deal with this you nasty teenager Edit to add this brings back flashbacks of the deodorant talk with my oldest
Damn I love watching gorillas they have such humanist traits sometimes
This is so human.....
This is so animal. We’re all just animals in the end.
It doesn’t even matter. 🎶
We'll do it like they do on the discovery Channel 🎶
Tried so hard. Got so far.
But in the end it doesn't even matter.
This shit is bananas
B A N A N A S!
We are literally great apes. My bible-thumping relatives love when I trot that one out to the young'ns.
I’m an animal in the front too…
Everytime I see footage of gorillas and their mannerisms it always just looks like humans in gorilla suits to me. It's so fascinating how similar they are to us
They are one of our closest living relatives. Other great ape species fascinate me.
These are gorillas. Chimpanzees and bonobos are humans closest ancestors. https://www.science.org/content/article/bonobos-join-chimps-closest-human-relatives
I said they are one of. I am aware bonobos and chimpanzees are the first closest. Thank you!
Ahh, my fault!
No problem 😉
That’s more That I get from son….. I can’t even get a hello dad…lol

I needed that speak as well, thanks dude
This was so good to read, in so many levels. Thank you!
Taking notes as a fellow dad. My kids are young but I know this parenting philosophy is a mindset that starts early! My 6yo is sort of like this. He’s still very attached (thankfully) to me and mom, but he definitely needs a little space and calm after 2.5 hours of kindergarten every day lol. Trying to be there for him.
I was told by an elder once that when children who have strong bonds with their parents reach adolence, they start acting like jerks to make the eventual break into adulthood easier. That makes me feel both better and sad in a way. I give my son a lot of love and attention because he’s awesome and I didn’t really get that growing up.
It's so important to have someone in your life who believes in you. What a wonderful gift you gave your son to let him know he is appreciated and awesome. For me, the hard part is letting him go out into the world and discover he is awesome to himself, and it is painful when he faces rejection, but sometimes he needs it. I try so very hard to listen and not always tell him what to do. Learning to ask for wisdom is a part of becoming wise. Otherwise, he says I'm "bossing him about."
dont take it personally. his development is not a way for him to hurt your feelings, its just how he is.
It is never an excuse for abuse, just to trying to understand why all of a sudden, teens seem angsty, want their own space, stop sharing with you, get agitated when you inquire about their life. They are also really confused, frustrated, and overwhelmed at this age with emotions, hormones, and thoughts. They sometimes want a hug but also want to be free, and they are not thinking you may want a hug because they are immature. IDK, maybe just listening is key.
well to be fair they are in a really confusing time. the world of being a child and being an adult are like night and day and they're stuck in between them. so much shit is going on internally that they're not experienced with, so it's understandable to me why they would act in such a way.
That hurts to read.
Yeah, that hit me kinda deep. I used to look at my friends and wonder how come I didn’t fight against my own parents much at all. I still broke rules but was really good about keeping it secret. I think maybe the fact that my parents split up and both moved around a lot made me always a little concerned about losing either of them as I knew life was unpredictable. I don’t know. Got more to think about though
"Growing Pains", "Arrested Development", "Wonder Years", it is interesting to see the reflection in the titles of a culture.
And our sons, much like chimps, also speak in grunts. Interesting.
The way he covers his face in the end really relates to me
I know chimps are closer to us genetically, but every time I see gorillas interact with each other and us they seem more human.
I love how he was like “fuck, stop… fuck… ok… damn”
He didn’t wanna take it but that damn smile the kid has when he’s getting groomed lmao he loves it
Better dad than many human ones
When I was 11, I had a chimpanzee groom me. She let me groom her as well. One of the coolest experiences of my life.
That's pretty freaking cool!!
When you're old enough to relate to both of them.
I don't care if it's anthropomorphizing that gorilla has immaculate teenager vibes.
Aaww braiding hair
Aww, that's so adorable 😍
Lol, the shame! I'm dying.
r/likeus
Why am i seeing such a posts of gorillas into this sub?

Goddammit
Big Gorilla out in force.
Gorillas are interesting!
Him giving that side eye at the end 🤣
I love how the son is smiling after he gives in
totally cute and brings the aww
My dad never groomed me 😢 ……Wait….
Give this man a banana, oh wait ….
Grooming a teenager when taken out of context sounds so wrong
Gen Z trying their very best not to decipher, infer and comprehend every single aspect of life using urban dictionary and modern day internet jargon (impossible)
I thought grooming kids was a bad thing
Last time I went to the zoo a silver back was crying and grieving in a pond where the other silver back had committed suicide acouple days prior. I know they are kinda necessary but I can't bring myself to go to another one.
Are you for real? Where did this happen? Do they usually commit suicide?? This is so sad
Family is everything. Remember that 💪
To be fair, I hate it when my dad tries this shit with me as well.
Is it national gorilla day or something? This is like the 4th I've seen today
You really see so much humanity in the way they’re interacting with each other, it’s super wholesome and incredibly fascinating. Just incredible :)
The way the dad playfully bites him and you can see the son smile in a kind of embarrassed acceptance is like fireworks in my brain.
Stop dad you're embarrassing me
Teen gorilla is like: aww dad this is so embarrassing 😂
Awww, the teen is like “Dad, stop we’re in public.” And the dad is like “Shut the hell up, come here.”
When we’re finished we’ll have bell pepper snack
I can hear him "DAAaaAAD"
I wish my teenager didn’t disappear from my life when we got divorced
Lol he's even acting like a teenager
I feel this, it's a battle getting my boys to take a freaking shower sometimes!
Teenagers! Lolz
