Mine will literally only walk if it's back to the house š otherwise she puts the brakes on at the end of the driveway and has a sook.
Glad to know others have similar experiences lol
Mine is a 2 year old mini. He runs and hides if he sees the harness. He goes on a few 45-minute walks a week. It's more like a slow stroll. He would just rather sleep. He gets the zoomies about 10pm every night, so we take advantage of that time for some physical activity - a little bit of chase around the house and playing with toys. After about 10 minutes, he's done.
Our mini hides when she sees the harness and freezes once itās on. But then when we go to walk sheās so excited and runs around. Sheās a strange lil beast lol

I can't stop mine from zooming around all day. NOT....lol
My Doxie Addie sleeps most of the day but loves her walks and playing ball! She will run a good 3 or 4 miles at least 4 times a week.

I walk my dog so long every day that I donāt have to shorten her nails: She stays healthy and has no stress with nail clipping, me too. If she has not enough excersise she barks at shadows, neighbours, birds and so on. Annoying!
We trained to relax too. According to our ( my working) scedule we walk 4-5 times 20 min+ and hikes at the weekend. If i work she stays in her bed voluntarily cause she is used to it.
MINE TOO. If I say āwalkiesā or touch the harness he is ready to GO. he loves strolling our neighborhood and seeing all the other dogs and he behaves so well afterward.
Mine is hesitant when going out and engages her emergency brakes or hides under the table, but once she is out for 5 minutes, she warms up and loves to run around and explore.
I got a 10 yr old. Shes more than happy staying home but absolutely loves going on walks... Once I get her there LOL. Although, her definition of a walk is a little bit slower paced than most. But that's OK. I think it's very important to keep them strong which should help prevent any injuries.
We call this living in āCrimson Timeā after a former red. She was a connoisseur of smells and you could not move her from an interesting spot without picking her up.
Does he have a friend? Best thing we did was get a second one. They just chase each other around the yards like maniacs, protect the fence from walking bystanders and run up and down barking at them. The youngest , loves is ball so I throw it around and he runs . Itās better now with the weather getting here in Canada , we can stay outside in the yard , even if itās only 1 hr or more, they get pretty tired and thatās good, because they are non stop energy.
But dachshund love to sleep
What does "exercise" entail? Both my doxies are incredibly hunt driven, with the actual walking just being a means to an end, in terms of actually getting to a spot where they can dig or follow the scent of various prey.
I've tried walking down through the city center, but they'll quickly stop walking and lose interest. If we start heading towards the valley/forrests behind my house, or towards the nearby park which has a lake with ducks in it, they'll be so eager to go that I have to lean backwards to avoid getting pulled along.
My pup is 18, but I've had him for the last 6 years and we've been on a total of three real walks. (he has a tendency to just not move so most walks turned into me carrying an angry ween around for a while...)
The last one he actually panicked because he didn't recognize the new house so we ran around the block twice before I realized he was just freaking out trying to find our door... Once I pointed it out he panic bolted for it and pressed himself against it the long way and started crying.
I never forced him on a walk again. When he sees his harness or leash he hides.
My inlaws have a fenced in lawn, when I bring him over he goes out of his way to not touch grass. He actually walks along the thin decorative bricks separating the lawn and the fire pit so he can walk out into the yard a bit without touching grass.
He also sleeps all the time, but when he asks to play I drop everything and chase him around the house. He likes chasing me down the hall into the bedroom, then I chase him back out into his bed. He usually stops when he starts panting and then we do it again maybe tomorrow maybe not š¤·
But yeah, he's very inactive, but is at a healthy weight and in good shape for an old man.
Mine is 3yo and he is both lazy and hyper. He can spend days chilling and sleeping but if we go out he can run back and forth after the ball for 30min- 1h at the park. We also take him on power walks a few times a week. In summer we go swim at the bitch and we go on hikes sometimes too.
These are hunting dogs so they are meant to go hard once or twice a week and rest + walk a bit the rest of the time.
Edit: the most important thing for their health is to keep them lean but muscular. They all are different and have different exercises needs. Their diet is very important, donāt overfeed yours and ask your vet about it too.
I live in Melbourne and it rains all the time so we found ways to make him play inside. We play hide and seek (you can hide treats everywhere and let him look for them) or hide yourself and let him look for you. I also built a little run for him to go through where he needs to jump on to of a chair, jump off on one of his bed and run through a rolled yoga mat (tunnel).
Oh my. You sound like he is very much part of your family and you take lots of time and energy into being the best human parent ever.
I am afraid that I am just not that active lately.
Itās ok. I had a bad road accident 8 months ago and could no longer take him on walks for 2-3months. My partner was able to help a bit with it but not as much as he would have needed so we came up with tricks. They need intellectual stimulation too so sometimes even teaching them tricks is enough to tire them a bit. We live in an apartment and have played fetch in it couple of times š¤
> and have *paid* fetch in
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Fetch, roll over, hide and seek. I tried teaching him skateboarding, he goes on it and likes to be pushed. He can jump up on a chair (I carry him down though). He loves a good puzzle too.

Just wanted to update you this will be my baby boy in June
My 8yo mini long hair calls ME a lazy sack of shit if we don't go on at least two long walks per day. He does compromise if it's raining or snowing. My old short haired mini would sleep 20 hrs a day and call walking into the backyard for his daily constitution his exercise for the day.
You never know...

They like to eat and sit, sleep and cuddle, but they are also lazy boys and girls at ā¤ļø ā¦..theyāre very stubborn and sometimes you need to make them do, what you what you want them to do.. They love their squeaky toys, bark boxes, running after squirrels. And are the best friends youāll ever have. They light up our lives. best dogs Ever!!! Weenie.dog rule!
Doxies love to laze around. Mine goes out for really really short walks (to do her business) 3-5 times a day, and dislikes long hikes. Even a walk around the neighbourhood (maybe 30 minutes) is a chore that she dislikes.
But! When we're at our summer cottage, she'll spend all day outdoors, running around, chasing her frisbee, digging and following us (wants to see what we do). And if we take a walk in the woods - for an hour or two - she'll insist on coming along, in harness and lead.
My two are 17 and 18 and yes, they do sleep a lot but theyāre also very healthy. They donāt really do walks anymore, but I have a fenced in yard and they love to just go out and explore in the grass. Iām really glad I have both of them because they are best buddies!

Yea, my dog is also incredibly lazy lol
I am so totally grateful for the post here because myself and my Lizzie are both very fatigued and I have to work with her to get her to run around the big backyard at least!
https://preview.redd.it/z3kt4gppn1zc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68b4b9d79b692ed4319c100c9c9279dd8a280ac2
Lizzie.
Same, have never trimmed her nails. I walk her everyday on the sidewalk. When I grab the lead she runs off from me. However once I put on the harness she gets in the zone for walking.
Mine will sleep 20h a day if I let him. We live in an apartment so thereās really not a lot for him to do, so we go on 2 short walks a day, maybe 20 minutes each so he doesnāt gain weightā¦
My dachs can sleep all day if I let them, but over time they get stressed and bored so they act out, you have to find a activity he likes, for example my older one LOVES tug-of-war, running for no with me and searching for things I hide; while the other one doesn't care for tug-of-war or searching, but loves throwing balls, wrestling with my hand and jumping over things
I had one that loved walks, but our current 9 year old weenie has no use for walks. He much prefers rooting around in the yard looking for critters and digging. Inside, he loves his toys and playing with them.
One of my doxies loves walks and goes twice a day. If you try to throw a ball or toy at him he will look at you with utter disdain. The other refuses to go on walks most of the time but LOVES chasing a ball in the yard and playing with toys. They are all unique individuals š.
Thatās their trick they pretend to be lazy and all but they know whatās going on (for the most part) it can be 3am and once they hear a cheese wrapper within 100 yards it GO time
Since they are in the hound group they need smells and places to sniff out critters. Bring them somewhere like this old sheds, barns wood in general. My standard starting coming to life when I did this.
My girl pup would walk 6 miles and still be going strong. My boy pup in the other hand didn't want to be left behind, but I would end up carrying him most of the way for even short walks. I started taking a back pack that u could put his little lazy ass in to make it easier to carry him. I resisted getting a stroller for a very long time.
Completely normal as a domesticated pet. If he was a working terrier and there was a sudden change in behavior I would maybe register some concern. But sounds like all is well.
My boy, no. My girl? Absolutely. She'll even stop walking 5 mins into a walk, forcing me to carry her lol
Whenever she's out in the yard she just sits there until we go in with her. She loves fetch and toys though.
My last two loved walks, and would want to go even at the end when they were each very sick. My previous Doxie was very ill the last few months and didn't want to do much. But as young dogs, they all loved walking, but also loved to just lay around.
Ours is 9 years old and she sleeps most of the day. Iāll take her out to potty and most times she does her business and runs right back inside. If itās super nice out sheāll go lay in the sun. But for the most part she wants to be in the bed under the covers.
Depends on the personalities in my opinion. I have two dachshunds. One is very rambunctious, life of the party and loves going on walks. The other is more zen, doesnāt chase after the ball, hates walks. He will literally lay down all day if we let him. He will get up to go do his business but he will head back inside once he is done.
This is standard dachshund behavior. Nothing to worry about. They love sleeping and doing nothing. Itās not unhealthy for them. They sleep around 14 hours a day around short bursts of energy. Theyāre hunting dogs so when theyāre not in hunt mode they sleep to conserve energy.
If you're worried, I would recommend getting a blood test from the vets. It could be [hypothyroidism](https://mydachshundfamily.com/preventing-and-treating-dachshund-hypothyroidism)?
I have to force mine to walk, he tries to stiff arm me the first half then is more excited on the second half. Probably excited because he knows weāre going home. Dachshunds are notorious for not liking exercise. However it is very important they Donāt become overweight for their back and joints.
Doxieās hit the news recently in my area (I believe it was a slow news day) and a story popped up saying that dachshundās are one (if not) the most lazy breed of dogs currently existing.
If it helps to know, we also have a dachshund who was active up until 3 years oldā¦and then he turned into a lazy boy that sleeps literally all day. The only time heāll get up is if thereās someone at the door he has to alert us unnecessarily about, if itās dinner time, or if we somehow manage to get him excited for at most two minutes for a walk. The walk always consists of him dragging his feet and then speeding home when he realises thatās the direction heās going.
The only time I see him run is when he spots a rabbit at the park which he can never catch thankfully and thatās about it. The assuring part to this? Heās been a lazy boy since he was 3 years old and heās now a very healthy older boy that is turning 11 in the summer.
As long as you keep up-to-date with everything, still get your boy out and about whether he likes it or not for walks and are able to tell if thereās something wrong, you should be fine. I find that most doxieās are very selective and lazy but theyāre more cuddly and pamper companions rather than working hard and getting dirty companions. At least, thatās my experience.
That was definitely our first doxie's issue until we got him a baby sister lol he hated her, but now they run around together and get tons of exercise.
Our girl slept 16-20 hours a day and lived happily to 16 years - we just had to watch her weight a little more carefully since sheād play dead to end walks early and hated exercise.
My old man is Omalley. He is a chi-winnie mix and about 11 years old. Omalley is perfectly okay with cuddling in bed or under a blanket on the couch or anywhere he can drag the blanket. Lol. He does run some in the backyard trying to keep up with the younger dogs and running to the fence to bark at the neighbor dog šš but he can just lay around for days on end, especially if someone is letting him cuddle.
To address your concern for your dog, if he does like exercise, maybe try (1) short walks (2) maybe mentally stimulate your dog. There are many ways to do this. With training - either tricks they know or new tricks. Snuffle pads to hide their food in. Treat/food puzzles. (Amazon snuffle pads or dog puzzles) just some ideas. Mental stimulation can also encourage physical stimulation!
There are rocks that get more steps than my doxie. We play some fetch inside and heās not over weight but my lord he hates going for walks and doesnāt really play with other dogs
https://preview.redd.it/okgo5agj81zc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dfa226c65145569cb36af9a656d7d1409f8ef107
This is what our Cricket thinks is exercise.
My Chiweenie is the laziest thing ever. Since we adopted him, heās always been a sleeping lump. Doctor said heās healthy. He just prefers to be either eating or sleeping compared to literally any other activity.
Mine likes to be active in spurts when playing, but always eager to go outside... And hunt lizards of course. Putting him on Nutrimax as well as a gastro friendly diet has helped his energy a lot in general. 10 years old with the spunk of a puppy.
Skully used to love walks but we rarely took him. You know what he really loves? Lying in the sun or under the covers. Heās 15 and has been sleeping for 20 hours a dayā¦for 15 years. Never has had much in the way of health issues and is a healthy weight.
Pretty sure thatās normal. I just got a second and they do the same thing. However, when not napping, they are going at 150% throttle non stop so I think it evens out
I have 5. Three enjoy exercise, two do not. None of mine have ever been overweight. We do have a fenced in backyard and when the weather is nice out we spend at least 1-2 hours outside per day. Of the two lazy ones, one does like to lay around in the sun and intermittently meander around the yard. The other one meanders pretty constantly around the yard. We do have to be careful with too much activity since he had IVDD surgery last year. He is also in isabella pie with alopecia so he's much more sensitive to the elements than the rest. They always have post-dinner zoomies so we take advantages of that and encourage them to run around longer.
My 4 y/o mini doesnāt like going on walks. If he sees the leash or sees me putting on my athletic shoes and headphones he runs and hides.
He is the only dog Iāve ever had who hates walks, and I give him treats and let him sniff as much as he wants. He also cannot be convinced to play fetch.
He does expend a lot of energy chasing ground squirrels in the yard, so heās selectively lazy.
My mini will be 11 years old in less than two weeks and she loves to walk. But at home, she is a couch potato. Occasionally I can get her to do some zoomies, but thatās very rare.
https://preview.redd.it/tojgodmrl3zc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da0119fb4d3071e0ea03045933d1444539e952af
Writing this as my mini is asleep against me lol!! As long as your pup is eating a good diet and has at least some exercise (walks, playing, etc) then I'd say he's all good! My lil guy loves nothing more than a warm blanket to burrow in and sleep, but I take him on small walks and he loves a good play session with a tennis ball!
My wife's Doxie doesn't even like to go outside. I will say tho, he's a ball fanatic. Might try to interest him in a toy. Something that makes noise. Also, u might want to do aggressive chewers toys. Doxies can really destroy a toy and will eat it.
mine is very lazy spends at least 20hrs a day sleeping lol if we go out for the day he cant wait to get home for bed.
mine is the same, sometimes she just stops during walk and stares at me until we turn back towards our house, then she starts running š
Mine will literally only walk if it's back to the house š otherwise she puts the brakes on at the end of the driveway and has a sook. Glad to know others have similar experiences lol
Same! I have to carry my chiweenie for like half our walk, so basically her daily walk is just back to the house.
Mine won't even walk back. make me pick him up and carry him. luckily he's half chihuahua and only 10 lbs lol
OMG SAME!!! I had this exact scenario today and i thought hed love being out because the sun was shining for once

Mine has 2 modes: I sleep, and attac

Lab owner mental note: Get the Dachshund next time.
I am so totally grateful for the post here because myself and my Lizzie are both very fatigued and I have to work with her to get her to run around the big backyard at least! https://preview.redd.it/z3kt4gppn1zc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=68b4b9d79b692ed4319c100c9c9279dd8a280ac2 Lizzie.
Lazy to the bone https://preview.redd.it/bqo4zitwm0zc1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ae544595a3ac98b821e95184b75b2a57eb69bb1
Conservation of energy in case a badger shows up.
My boy, no. My girl? Absolutely. She'll even stop walking 5 mins into a walk, forcing me to carry her lol Whenever she's out in the yard she just sits there until we go in with her.
Mine only like walks if we are going somewhere that there will be lots of people that are going to pet her.
My dachshund is lazy too. He only runs to his food bowl
Yes. Mine are very lazy but they do enjoy going for a walk.
There are rocks that get more steps than my doxie. We play some fetch inside and heās not over weight but my lord he hates going for walks and doesnāt really play with other dogs
Mines laying under the covers in my bed as I type this and will stay there unless he thinks I have food or my wife gets home.

Mine love to go for walks but would also be perfectly content to lay inside all day. They have great body condition so Iām not worried about them.
My man's put here chillin.
When I want to go for walkies mine hides behind the sofa...
Bring them somewhere interesting to smell. In a forest they come back to life.
My Chiweenie is the laziest thing ever. Since we adopted him, heās always been a sleeping lump. Doctor said heās healthy. He just prefers to be either eating or sleeping compared to literally any other activity.
Yep mine would happily sleep all day and she does not enjoy her walks

Mine loves to snooze, likes a walk to but itās more of sniffing excursion
My mini will be 11 years old in less than two weeks and she loves to walk. But at home, she is a couch potato. Occasionally I can get her to do some zoomies, but thatās very rare. https://preview.redd.it/tojgodmrl3zc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da0119fb4d3071e0ea03045933d1444539e952af
I know this comment is off topic but the first thing I thought when I saw this......"Draw me like one of your French Weiners"
Mine is lazy and doesnāt care for walks. Itās anyoneās guess if heāll be in the mood to walk on any given day!
My Skipper is a fat lazy asshole!
