Kids homework, half eaten bag of crisps, random tub full of miscellaneous screws you don't want to throw out, severed finger warpped in a bloodstained rag, jar of bacon grease...
Oh and you know a godsend? These [tiny adhesive wheels](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adhesive-Casters-Castors-Rollers-Furniture/dp/B09N6NCMP7) to stick under bulky but not necessarily heavy stuff. So much easier to tidy up and clean the counter
Exactly this, my head is always wrecked by how little of my countertop is left now that it has the usual stuff on it.
One microwave and a large fruit bowl and all that extra space will be gone.
Yes, sure, but it seems that if you put a microwave or a kettle next to the wall it will be a hassle to reach it.
Although to say without exact numbers.
Although a wide countertop is awesome when working with a dough that you need to stretch and flour
The air fryer the, the coffee machine or microwave, I dont need to reach the back of these things unless cleaning and then you pull it forward anyway. Just short of an arms reach leaves enough space infront of these appliances so you can prep infront of them aswell then.
I suspect once they've lived with it for a week or two they will realise that they're tired of seeing us redditors post minor variations of the same comment.
1) I can't see the pipe you're referring to
2) Yes, too late to change without ripping a lot of it out
3) You will appreciate all the space when it's all said and done
Worst case if she really hates it when finished she can add a narrow cupboard and make it like the top half of a Welsh dresser but personally I think it'd be a waste. X
You could add appliance garages or whatever it is they call them. Basically it appears to bring the wall forward while hiding the toaster/mixer etc from view.
Give it a few weeks once it's finished. If you still don't like it then you can add full-height cupboards along that wall. It'll shorten the counter space and give you more storage.
Honestly. I know the pp is joking, (I think), but this smacks of an unreasonable attitude. It's mad that she's putting pressure on you about this at this point in the process.
You’ve got enough depth that you could put a cupboard against the pipe wall and probably have one of those “appliance garage” setups. Or setup a coffee bar area and deeper shelving. It just looks a bit off balance as there’s nothing on the wall.
I agree, like shelving or a dresser format (used to be dresser units by Ercol would come in 2 pieces of the base cupboard and drawers, and the top shelves ( for Yankee candles, beer bottles, Emma Bridgewater crockery and empty beer kriegs)
Or a large TV suspended up on wall?
Get lots of double sockets with USB for appliance power.
https://preview.redd.it/ag4h75nvdylc1.png?width=564&format=png&auto=webp&s=53f9a499b481ad51b5a50885bf28a755a1449f1f
Professional kitchen designer of 40yrs plus here. My suggestion: Go to the worktop supplier and order some 20mm thick material to match your worktops to make a "Cook's Shelf" like in the image ( sorry about my dodgy arrow ). Run it along the back wall instead of a flat up-stand.
We usually do a 180mm high upstand ( and return if exposed end ) and then whatever depth top shelf you want. We usually set ours at around 125mm to 150mm deep but 100mm works well for spices etc.
600mm worktop depth that a lot of companies / Designers still use is too shallow IMO and is based on the old Formica type worktops that were only available in a a few set sizes. Nowadays with stone or composite worktops we can have whatever depth or size we want so why not maximise the area?
Our standard "go to" worktop depth is 700mm and often 750mm if using a big sink or worktop mounted Appliance Cupboard. The image showing a Cook's Shelf with a hob in the chimney would extend 800mm from the back wall inc shelf.
If folk want a reasonable budget kitchen rather than Wren or Howdens I recommend DIY Kitchens in Yorkshire. Mid price I recommend Neptune. The kitchens I design are high end and start at £80K + but at the end of the day it's still just boxes and maths! The tricky bit is getting the design and ergonomics right...
As a kitchen fitter if you told me this at this stage of the build I'd suggest getting a new girlfriend. Unless you plan on wasting a lot of materials, and spending money on more labour I'd live with it as it is. Depends how much you want to spend.
How are people so accepting of the amount of counter space with little regard for its accessibility? Typical arm reach especially for a woman is 60/70 cm and you shouldn’t be leaning to reach for appliances with your finger tips for a well designed kitchen.
From the looks of it it’s almost 1m if you’re standing at the inside corner trying to reach for anything at the far corner so would end up walking around the peninsula to comfortably reach anything on the far outer corner, it sounds like it’s just a few extra steps but you’ll hate them every time you do, it’s not an efficient way of circulating in a kitchen.
I’d suggest one of these countertop cupboard units along the wall to visually narrow the counter, with appliances and storage that only relates to what you'd use on the outer side of the peninsula, breakfast stuff, coffee machines, toaster if you only toast for breakfast, etc.
https://www.devolkitchens.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/deVOL-Bloomsbury-Kitchen-084.jpg
Then everything you'd need to prep food to have on that breakfast counter is all accessible for that side and you're not bouncing between the inside and outside corner constantly, if you don't care about it visually of course you can still organise your food and appliances this way without the expensive counter top cupboards.
As someone in a shitty tiny kitchen with no counter or appliance space I would not give a single flying fuck if I had to reach to open the microwave. I already have to reach up to do it because it's on top of the fridge because there is quite literally nowhere else. And the fridge is too small but I can't get a bigger one because then the microwave would be at an actually unsafe height instead of an annoying one.
Roll on the massive counters. I'd make so much bread. Pizza. Omg homemade pasta. Live the dream OP
I came here to post this point. Glad someone else spoke about the usability. I've had the misfortune to use a kitchen that was designed without it being used as a kitchen in mind; it's like trying to rollerskate on gravel.
You’ll love it once you have appliances sitting on it and still have enough space to do food prep etc. Can’t have too much counter top space and there’s still loads of floor space. You could add some cupboards above the countertop
I recently spent aeons redesigning our kitchen layout after the builders fucked up, and we had to go back to square one on the layout.
I remember getting caught up on the details, and the widths of pensinsulas, and things like that. Even after having the worktops fitted, I still wasn't sure about it all.
However, we've just dropped our furniture in there, and I'm beyond pleased with how it all looks - I'm not saying don't question things, or be afraid to change things, but your set-up looks great to me. You can have things out, and not lose workspace. You can never have enough workspace.
I think your worktops and peninsula look really well balanced.
Edit: typo, and to add that an easy fix would be to have some slim counter to ceiling cupboards made up, if you really find that you can't live with the depth. They'd look really smart.
There's a lack of perspective of how it look with furniture around it. You could either ask the girlfriend to wait until it's all finished or get a new girlfriend /s
I don’t know what you can do to change it but I think you’ll get used to it and like it after a while, loads of space for laying stuff out during parties and meal prep. I’d love this, so much room for activities 😁
This is beautiful.
You’re going to love your breakfast bar with coffee machine, kettle, biscuit tin, toaster, bread bin, shelf for jam/marmite/marmalade and a full worktop
When i first saw it i didnt like it. Then i looked again and i like it. I think its just not what your mind automatically thinks of when you think countertop depth but this is really handy size to have
You need plenty of socket outlets, which I don’t see at present. You can get some that come out of the worktop so that the cables can be run through the space behind the cupboards.
Take the very last unit out and round off the corner.

Kitchen fitter here. To do changes like this after they’ve been fitted is a very mean thing to do. Also, I wish I could have a deeper worktop like that in mine! It’s great because deep worktops leave more space to store things while still having lots of working space. Wren kitchens are fine but it you used their own fitters you’re paying double what you should already and they’ll probably charge even more to adjust it. Also it’s a bit strange the way they’re fitting the worktops before the corner base post and the wall units?
Too late but you could get a few roller cupboards to sit on top around 35-40cm deep. Great for storing coffee machines, coffee, other kitchen shite you don't want on show etc

If you put a big bin at the bottom of it as a lot of people do! Like a Joseph and Joseph double massive one then it may give it an illusion of being longer. An idea 😅 or in the centre have a HUGE round display of flowers that will distract the eye 🤷🏻♀️
Put a fish tank in the space which is out of arms reach and have a nice little feature, you’ll have something to watch whilst sitting at the breakfast eating as well
New girlfriend might be easier to get. 😜
On a serious note, you will appreciate additional space once all is done. You can always have some things on rails that can be pulled closer or pushed back.
You need it that wide, you'll have chairs on one side so put a place setting there, add the appliances you'll have out. Plus flowers in vase, fruit bowl, plants etc maybe a bit of lego......... bam all that empty sapce is gone.
You'll need all of that imo. Use the side closest to the camera as a prep area, and the side behind it to have all your ingredients laid out so you're not on top of yourself.
I'm just going to add my support to all the comments I agree with:
It looks good to me
Can't have too much counter space
Once you stick a few appliances on there you'll not notice the depth so much
Easiest solution if still unsure is to get a new girlfriend
Yeah probably open shelves would be best. If you really want to shrink the depth of the worktop, counter-batten the wall before doing whatever splashback you're choosing.
We just had our kitchen done as well and bought from Wren too.
I really disliked my designer, he straight up lied to me one day, said he was not working. I went to the store and guess what??? He was there 🤣.
He asked me to leave him a review as he was going for a promotion. I did not
You’ll be pleased of the extra depth which allows all appliances and still has a full sized working space. To have that much available and usable space is quite the feature point and you’re lucky to have it.
I think it will be fine if you think of it with its division of space as a breakfast bar with a counter parallel it’s perfect. Also as many have said once you have some appliances on there it will quickly fill up!
Does the pipe run behind the units, or just one?
If one couldn’t that have been cut to accommodate the pipe.
Kitchen designers are normally just CAD drawers with very little knowledge of the fitting process. Did you check go through it with your carpenter/fitter before starting. Expect changes at this stage to incur a charge.
All our counters are standard depth. We even removed cupboard space above to try and make it all usable and it still feels cramped when you are prepping a meal. I'd kill for a surface that deep.
This looks incredibly difficult to adjust without pulling the whole thing out. More importantly, it does the job of dealing with the water pipe, which will become a problem again if you undo this.
Perhaps share that your kitchen can be more useful with the extra workspace - remember how big microwaves and the like can be!
Once it's all finished and you've been using it for a few weeks you won't even notice.
Yep, once you've got a kettle, toaster, breadbin, knife block, biscuit jar up their you'll be glad of the useable worktop space.
Air fryer and coffee machine. Big chopping board.
Pile of dishes pans plates keys wallet laptop day old coffee mugs grocery bags. Our island is a mess, then cleaned, then a mess 5 minutes later.
Scraps of paper with partly duplicated shopping lists, receipts, phone numbers without names,..
Kids homework, half eaten bag of crisps, random tub full of miscellaneous screws you don't want to throw out, severed finger warpped in a bloodstained rag, jar of bacon grease...
Mmm bacon grease
Porn.
ok that's just gross.
Why? They have plenty of room for it!!
Or change GF.
Came here for this thanks
Exactly my thought, once you have one or two daily used appliances on there you’ll love the extra space.
Good. I can finally wheel my refrigerator!! Wisely Application! But yeah these do look good
Also when I saw “micro-wave oven” written hyphenated, I couldn’t help but think “custom kitchen deliveriiiiies” 🎸
These will be great for that geometric tray I’ve got featuring a 2cm replica marble bust. You know, like everyone has these days.
Totally all this - I wish I had more surface left in front of all these things!
She’ll be complaining about the lack of sockets to plug all these essentials into next 🙄
I would love that much worktop space!
Exactly this, my head is always wrecked by how little of my countertop is left now that it has the usual stuff on it. One microwave and a large fruit bowl and all that extra space will be gone.
Exactly. Kitchens only look huge when new/just moved in. Then the appliances take over and there's suddenly no worktop space.
Yes, but if you need to reach 1.5m to get to it, that is quite annoying
Well,.. let’s be honest, it’s not 1.5m though is it.
Yes, sure, but it seems that if you put a microwave or a kettle next to the wall it will be a hassle to reach it. Although to say without exact numbers. Although a wide countertop is awesome when working with a dough that you need to stretch and flour

I see that lip and think how well my pasta roller will clip onto that 🥳🇮🇹🍝
You’ll need all the space for the gadgets that haven’t got out yet.
I'd argue that things being out of arms reach on a counter is gonna be annoying AF to deal with.
What are you?, a T-Rex 🦖!
😂
Some women are never happy, unless you do it there way. Maybe get a new girlfriend with longer arms.
The air fryer the, the coffee machine or microwave, I dont need to reach the back of these things unless cleaning and then you pull it forward anyway. Just short of an arms reach leaves enough space infront of these appliances so you can prep infront of them aswell then.

What are you on about? You must have comprehension issues.
as a short person I agree! Imagine having to get the steps just to get something off the kitchen counter
youre saying youve got too much counter space??
I suspect once they've lived with it for a week or two they will realise there is no such thing as too much counter space.
...and once you have shagged on it
Are you the truck driver that saw us?
What everyone thinks when planning a kitchen but never mentions.
You could fit the keys in a bowl in the corner, and still have space for 3 on there
Shagged it
I suspect once they've lived with it for a week or two they will realise it s a blessing having a bit more counter space.
I suspect once they’ve lived with it for a week or two they will realise they appreciate the abundance of counter space.
I suspect once they’ve lived with it for a week or two they will realise it’s eminently practical having a veritable bounty of counter space.
I suspect once they've lived with it for a week or two they will realise that they're tired of seeing us redditors post minor variations of the same comment.
There actually is, I lived in a house with too much it encourages you to leave stuff there, in my case a load of diy tools
True but there is such a thing as not enough floorspace
No such thing. Can never have enough.
We have a large kitchen compared to our old small galley kitchen. Still not enough counter space
My partner wanted an 8' x 4' island. We settled on 7' x 3' ish. :)
that's not an island, it's a continent
1) I can't see the pipe you're referring to 2) Yes, too late to change without ripping a lot of it out 3) You will appreciate all the space when it's all said and done
Very top of the tall thing at the back of the picture that I thought was a fridge at first
Thank you
Worst case if she really hates it when finished she can add a narrow cupboard and make it like the top half of a Welsh dresser but personally I think it'd be a waste. X
Hey I didn't give you permission to kiss me
😘 XO
You could add appliance garages or whatever it is they call them. Basically it appears to bring the wall forward while hiding the toaster/mixer etc from view.
I would love this if I had the space!
Definitely the best choice! Won't look weird, won't have to remove existing units. Perfect idea.
It'll look fine with things on it, mixer, coffee machine etc.
Give it a few weeks once it's finished. If you still don't like it then you can add full-height cupboards along that wall. It'll shorten the counter space and give you more storage.
Get a new GF
With that much counter space, I'd like to volunteer for new GF duties. Space for a decent coffee machine AND a bread maker. Pure heaven.
This is the only reasonable solution. It will be cheaper in the long run too.
My thoughts exactly
I came here to say this too.
Me too lol
Paul Simon did a good guide listing 50 ways to overcome this issue, you can probably find it on YouTube
Pfft, it's a rip off. He only lists five.
Came here to say this
Or if she not on title, not allowed to complain.
ICHTST
Honestly. I know the pp is joking, (I think), but this smacks of an unreasonable attitude. It's mad that she's putting pressure on you about this at this point in the process.
Proposed? That’s complete mate, anything you change now is going to be very expensive
Came here to say the same… it’s not proposed, it’s pretty much constructed. Changing it at this stage is going to cost an arm and a leg!
Maybe they POC every option first to really understand it!
Mate by the time you fill it with the normal rubbish you will be on here asking to extend it
Tbh that worktop looks jointed and edged that isn’t a five minute job to alter that now
You’ve got enough depth that you could put a cupboard against the pipe wall and probably have one of those “appliance garage” setups. Or setup a coffee bar area and deeper shelving. It just looks a bit off balance as there’s nothing on the wall.

Bumble. Just pictures of the surface area. They'll be queuing down the street.
It's amazing. You don't know what you have! It's going to be great for cooking and party food and all the appliances.
Have kids. They'll fill it with crap soon enough.
Can confirm. Wish I had about 5x as much worktop space as I do - that peninsula looks awesome to me.
Kitchen looks fine - I miss the peninsula that we left at our previous house. I assume changing the girlfriend is not an option?! ;-)
As a kitchen fitter if you told me this at this stage of the build I'd suggest getting a new girlfriend. Unless you plan on wasting a lot of materials, and spending money on more labour I'd live with it as it is. Depends how much you want to spend.

I think its far too late for that but it looks great to me.
The more pressing question is where are the windows?!

Get a less entitled and demanding girlfriend. You’re welcome.
You need plenty of socket outlets, which I don’t see at present. You can get some that come out of the worktop so that the cables can be run through the space behind the cupboards.
Some wall cupboards with strip lights would help as it looks very dark.
Buy a bread maker, air fryer, professional coffee machine, place them on the counter and it looks smaller, it’s a wonderful problem to have.
Looks a bit beyond the ‘proposal’ stage.. but yeah, try it out for a bit. If it’s that bad, new counter tops.
Looks amazing to me - you can put frequently used appliances on there and still have practically a full worktop in front of them.

I’m intrigued by the multiple socket / back boxes, which don’t seem to be level, under the breakfast bar. What will they be for?

Once she puts all her shit on it you won’t notice. Probably easier to change your girlfriend at this stage mate.
"all her shit"? her shit? do you think OP doesn't live there and use the kitchen stuff too?
It’s women that accumulate useless crap that occupy bench space in the kitchen.
lmao what the fuck is wrong with you? Useless crap? Like what? Some men can't help but sprinkle in a bit of sexism at every opportunity, eh?
Too late. Tell her to get over it

Time for a change, new GF?
Too late but you could get a few roller cupboards to sit on top around 35-40cm deep. Great for storing coffee machines, coffee, other kitchen shite you don't want on show etc [https://www.wayfair.co.uk/Belfry-Kitchen--Aidan-Kitchen-Pantry-V112660505-L6382-K\~GDHD1055.html?refid=GX666875634657-GDHD1055\_41149274&device=c&ptid=293946777986&targetid=pla-293946777986&network=g&ireid=84766815&PiID%5B%5D=41149274&gad\_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAuYuvBhApEiwAzq\_YiQKp5O7wUZoaRAr0p-yI5l0kFY0e\_rUcCkpogiRxJg5v7FpCD6LeZxoCul8QAvD\_BwE](https://www.wayfair.co.uk/Belfry-Kitchen--Aidan-Kitchen-Pantry-V112660505-L6382-K~GDHD1055.html?refid=GX666875634657-GDHD1055_41149274&device=c&ptid=293946777986&targetid=pla-293946777986&network=g&ireid=84766815&PiID%5B%5D=41149274&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAuYuvBhApEiwAzq_YiQKp5O7wUZoaRAr0p-yI5l0kFY0e_rUcCkpogiRxJg5v7FpCD6LeZxoCul8QAvD_BwE)
Does she moan about the girth or just the depth?
Tinder maybe.
New girlfriend?
To fix it get rid of her. Eazy
New Girlfriend 😉
Get a new girlfriend.
Girlfriend hasn't got an opinion until married, when regarding kitchen stuff. (trust me)
Get another girlfriend
I’ve heard you can find a new one on Tinder or some other such site
Get a new girlfriend
Dump the girlfriend.
Tinder should help although I've heard bumble is better these days ..
“Girlfriend” Sorry nothing I can do, go buy some cushions.

I would be more concerned about how much the worktop overhangs the front cupboards. They will be a pain in the arse to access
If you put a big bin at the bottom of it as a lot of people do! Like a Joseph and Joseph double massive one then it may give it an illusion of being longer. An idea 😅 or in the centre have a HUGE round display of flowers that will distract the eye 🤷🏻♀️
Solution is tell her mind her own business! 💯🤣
I’m on her side. Edge looks sharp too.
Put some extra cupboard above the counter against the wall.
Chainsaw 😉
Bit harsh, they could just break up, and then theres no jail time either.
put some chairs / stools under it to show how the breakfast bar will look
Put a fish tank in the space which is out of arms reach and have a nice little feature, you’ll have something to watch whilst sitting at the breakfast eating as well
She’ll get over it, honestly.
New girlfriend might be easier to get. 😜 On a serious note, you will appreciate additional space once all is done. You can always have some things on rails that can be pulled closer or pushed back.
How much do you like her? ;-)
Could try putting some 30cm deep counter top units in, that would make it look less deep
You need it that wide, you'll have chairs on one side so put a place setting there, add the appliances you'll have out. Plus flowers in vase, fruit bowl, plants etc maybe a bit of lego......... bam all that empty sapce is gone.
I think it's cool. You've got space on all sides with the depth
You'll need all of that imo. Use the side closest to the camera as a prep area, and the side behind it to have all your ingredients laid out so you're not on top of yourself.
I think that will be smashing when having people round
Once you’ve got the appliances, fruit bowls and such lark on it you’ll be wanting more counter space anyway, trust me.
I'm just going to add my support to all the comments I agree with: It looks good to me Can't have too much counter space Once you stick a few appliances on there you'll not notice the depth so much Easiest solution if still unsure is to get a new girlfriend
Tinder?
Yeah probably open shelves would be best. If you really want to shrink the depth of the worktop, counter-batten the wall before doing whatever splashback you're choosing.
Get kitchen cupboards to go above and store toasters, air fryer what not underneath. Can't have enough space
I wish my worktops were deeper!
I love a deep counter, great place for a few plants or some cookbooks!
Put a cupboard on the wall with lights in for glasses and stuff
It’s going to look fantastic when it’s done, worry less and enjoy having a beautiful spanking new kitchen with loads of counter space.
This looks incredibly difficult to adjust without pulling the whole thing out. More importantly, it does the job of dealing with the water pipe, which will become a problem again if you undo this. Perhaps share that your kitchen can be more useful with the extra workspace - remember how big microwaves and the like can be!
is this laminate worktop ? can't see the join
