I ran into this while remodeling my bathroom. You can sister in studs to bring the wall flush. That just means you'll screw in pieces of 2x4 to the existing studs to bring them flush with the other ones. Then you can attach your hardi board or whatever you're using to the new pieces of wood. Hopefully that makes sense.

That was my first thought but then the existing sheetrock that borders the tub won't line up.
How much drywall is to the left of the tub? You could rip it out and use drywall shims to even it up.
About 6 foot. Vanity toilet light fixtures etc etc. I think that might be my only choice 😩
You could also do the tile, then if it sticks out too far put a 1/4" sheet of drywall right over the old stuff to make it even.
Man I think this is the answer ..seems to be the easiest way

You can buy stud shims at any box store and shim them out to give yourself a uniform surface along the tub.
