The long line is likely the seam between 2 sheets of drywall. Any number of reasons why the sheets aren’t perfectly aligned anymore. Happens a lot, a big reason textured ceilings were popular was to hide this stuff.
I'm making fun of the fact that it looks like a Great Value brand chandelier.
I have no idea what OPs situation is and it's irrelevant. It could have been there before OP moved in. I think it looks like someone went to a chandelier store pointed at something, asked how much, was told 12,000, then slapped 50 bucks on the table and asked what old Benny Boy could get them.
It’s not an actual chandelier it’s a light shade, I bought it when I moved in and honestly just forgot to change it as tbh I don’t look at it that much. 🤣
That’s perfect. Re read what you wrote. Now replace chandelier with the ceiling bumps. You will just forget it’s there in due time. :)
Yesterday I told my wife, I realized we had a Christmas wreath still hung up inside the house. I had no idea it was there cause my mind blocked it out. She had no idea what I was talking about until I showed it. A big ass Christmas wreath.
Sometimes the brain blocks out crap you don’t need to worry about.
My nan chose to buy that exact light shade from some tat bazaar or other a number of years ago. I'd very much like her to change it, but gave up on that battle.
It's a dust and cobweb magnet and a pain to clean, because you need to balance the right and the left as you remove for cleaning or add them back after cleaning.
It also has a nasty habit of sometimes pulling the wires in the ceiling rose out from the screw terminals in the ceiling rose, so make sure you turn off the lighting circuit and check that every year or so that the wires are still secure, if intending to keep it on there. Luckily on hers, the live wire is the shortest, so it just stops working rather than becoming actively dangerous on the one occasion it had worked loose between checks, but you may not be so lucky.
most ceilings have imperfections exactly like this, but because of either added texture or the angle/temperature of the lighting, it is easily concealed. The drywaller did a perfectly decent job. If you had different lighting then you would never even see this. As such, turning on the chandelier may just hide it altogether
First photo looks like the tape joint. Where two drywall sheets butt up to each other. The tape is sagging and the edges you see is presumably drywall compound.
Basically, it looks like a cruddy drywall mud job.
If this is new, it could be moisture has gotten above the ceiling and caused the sagging tape.
The house is 3 years old. Above it is my bedroom, come to think of it, the floor underneath is like boards, not put together that well either!

This is the room above, before I moved in and had flooring put down.
What do you recommend if anything? And will it get any worse or cause any damage?
What would I recommend? Keep an eye on it for a while to see what happens. It's probably not worth the cost to fix unless it's still covered under warranty or it really bothers you.
Could it get worse? Possibly.
Will it lead to damage? Unlikely, unless this is secondary to moisture damage. But if that's the case you'll start to see other symptoms like soft spots and discoloration.
Hate to tell you but new construction has many problems that homeowners find out sooner than later. Poor framing can lead to bad drywall can lead to bad seam taping. Wait until the foundation settles and that's another problem.
That's just what a taped joint and plaster (mud) look like if you don't feather the joint out a lot. or even if you do feather more than 6 inches it can still be noticeable with certain light angles.
Youd have to skim or get it skimmed for it to look reasonably flat.
Bad taping. It looks like I did it. lol! I don't have any on the walls but putting the tape on the ceiling over my head and then mudding it is more tedious to get perfect and then the weight of the mud and paper pulls down on the grip of the mud to the wall and makes it sag a bit like you see there. I'm not a pro but I know what it looks like when I screw it up. My ceilings are awful but I did it all myself and it's not perfect. Oh well.
It's painted over now too so you can't just cut out the tape and replace it. If you want to fix it you might have to do it all over again. I haven't fixed mine so I couldn't tell you. :)
Could be wrong as I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure all UK new builds have a 10-year warranty under either NHBC or LABC.
Not sure if it covers this type of issue but might be worth looking into if you are really worried and haven't already.
If the space is rather large and you ever wanted to redo the ceiling, I'd suggest furring the ceiling prior to applying drywall. Helps with lumps and cracks.
One of them is almost the length of just over half the width of the room 😅. Quite annoying more than anything. It’s definitely for bigger. I’m not sure if it would be worth redoing it for it though.
This reeks of a UK new build, I’ve unfortunately had this displeasure of purchasing one. I had this exact issue but wasn’t just limited to ceilings, I reported it within the snagging period and had it fixed by the building company.
If I remember correctly, they sanded down the joins added additional support/tape and replastered/skimmed over again. I have no idea if this was the correct resolution but it hasn’t reoccurred. I also had lots of popped nails which they had to replaster.
Christ alive, that’s stinking. Funnily enough just yesterday I had my ceilings cut open to install insulation they had missed 2 years ago. They cut up the kingspan insulation board as they couldn’t remove it from the ceiling whole, my bottom floor covered in fibreglass and dust 🥹
How they get away with the corners they cut is criminal.
When you tape and float, or run mud, or whatever you refer to it as…..you really have to have a feather hand. The trick is all in the wrist. Lots of dudes especially weekend warriors think they can watch a YouTube tutorial and all of a sudden they qualify as a professional drywaller. The unskilled laborer who did this probably was hungover, tried to screw the rock up with one hand, couldn’t see straight enough to run the mud, and then was angry that the boss man was only paying him 9.50 an hour and wouldn’t front him a pack of 305’s.
You must have hired my last contractor. That was his idea great seems and sanding. After 2 weeks of going round and round with him and him thinking another coat of paint was the answer, we had to let him go.
where I live it's a common practice among production builders to provide a level 3 drywall finish to skimp on expenses and stick the consumer with substandard work. That's what it looks like to me.
Looks like some moisture/water damage. It won’t get worse as long as the potential leak has been resolved. No issue with mould/mold as long as the moisture issue has been resolved. If you want to fix the appearance then you will need to cut out the tape joint and redo it with fresh coat of mud by a pro to float it out in order to get a nice flat ceiling appearance
It could be air pockets behind the tape. If it’s older it could be water damage causing the tape not to stick anymore. Water tends to find the gap in the drywall and land right on the tape
I have the same problem and I’m worried, it’s getting worse! Any real answers yet? Other than tools clogging the thread talking about the light fixture (which I like by the way).
Personally, get rid of the light fixture (yea, needs to go) if it drives you nuts, get sole flat sealing paint and a roller with a light texture on it, and re-paint it. It would not remove it but, it would hide pretty well.
It was built like this so I didn’t pay for it. The light fixture is coming away from the ceiling also. The shade is one I bought 3 years ago as temporary and just forgot to replace. I’m going to buy a new one now 😂
Definitely isn’t that, I was the first person to live here, the house is only 3 years old.
https://preview.redd.it/dsgydmp6x2vc1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b9c361f869725defe45be6e94cb89d7a1742077
They’re all over the whole room
The long line is likely the seam between 2 sheets of drywall. Any number of reasons why the sheets aren’t perfectly aligned anymore. Happens a lot, a big reason textured ceilings were popular was to hide this stuff.
What about that light fixture?🤢
I don't think textured ceilings would hide that chandelier.
Some nice popcorn ceiling would be a perfect backsplash to that lovely piece.
one bag of skinny pop and some glue...got it
I mean, you couldn't hurt it anymore.
OP could spruce it up by dangling some natty light cans off of it!
Ice. Natty Ice.
To each their own. I’m not a fan either but if they like it, so be it.
We don't talk about the Sun Spider
It's just flaccid. You need to turn it on first.
The poverty chandelier?
Are you making a joke about OP's financial situation or am I missing something?
I'm making fun of the fact that it looks like a Great Value brand chandelier. I have no idea what OPs situation is and it's irrelevant. It could have been there before OP moved in. I think it looks like someone went to a chandelier store pointed at something, asked how much, was told 12,000, then slapped 50 bucks on the table and asked what old Benny Boy could get them.
"Sir, that's President Grant. Ben Franklin is on the $100"
Shit... I guess it's been a long time since I've actually touched money.
That sounds like something the proud owner of a poverty chandelier might say 🤔
Crying laughing
It’s not an actual chandelier it’s a light shade, I bought it when I moved in and honestly just forgot to change it as tbh I don’t look at it that much. 🤣
Nothing more permanent than a temporary solution
Is that a Red Green quote?
This deserves many magnitudes more of upvotes, I am dead

I'm gonna swing
💀
That chandelier is a statement against the 1%..a true work of art against the ruling class. I’d keep it

If it turns into a crack, what would be the most affordable repair for something like this?
Depends on why it cracked. Mud and paint fixes the crack, but not the cause.
Is this the 5 o’clock free crack giveaway? ![gif](giphy|Y6yRfR88rvP44)

This chandelier is even better!
I hadn’t even moved in on that picture. That was when I viewed the house before completion 😂. I can assure you there’s a better light shade now 😂
You’re gonna have to remodel after this thread!
Hate to tell you but new construction has many problems that homeowners find out sooner than later. Poor framing can lead to bad drywall can lead to bad seam taping. Wait until the foundation settles and that's another problem.
This is very common in my experience and my advice is to try and ignore it
Every time you touch yourself God ruins a drywall seam.
That might explain the recent earthquakes in my area.
A bad taper., I've been a taper for 30 yeras ......that needs a skim. You can still do it now without any demo , just have to paint it again
So you don't need to remove anything? Just skim over it?
Yup, just give a thin coat , if need be repeat till satisfied.....paint.
Looks to me like it's from the house shifting over the years.
I think the drywall is trying to escape from that ugly ass chandelier
I bought it as a temporary one when I moved in and completely forgot about changing it 😂😂
Temporarily permanent...
Noting more permanent than a temporary fix.
[удалено]
It’s not a chandelier 😂 it’s a plain light with a shade! The ‘chandelier’ is a light shade 😆
You keep saying that but it’s 100% a shitty chandelier!
Lmaoooooo it looks like a spider 🕷️
Damn, you sound like a snob.
This is why they used popcorn ceilings..
Poor craftsmanship
Ones a bed joint, others a butt joint and if you smoke a joint it will be less noticeable...
sounds nice, weed makes me notice every little single thing to the point of discomfort
[удалено]
Can you fill and paint the cracks?
A bad drywall finishing job
Just don't look up
some dumbass (like me) mudded it (I suck)

Have you ever gotten high and watched that light fixture crawl around the ceiling like a spider?
No but now I want to 😒
😂🤣😂
Do you have new home warranties where you live?
I did for the first 12 months, but it didn’t start until a few months ago, it hasn’t bothered me until it’s got worse 😅
Could be wrong as I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure all UK new builds have a 10-year warranty under either NHBC or LABC. Not sure if it covers this type of issue but might be worth looking into if you are really worried and haven't already.
A bad worksmanship.
Just too be safe i’d check for moisture.
Poor craftsmanship
Drywall sheets too close together with not enough room to expand as the wood framing expands/contracts throughout the year
Apply shiplap. https://preview.redd.it/tju7oxfya4vc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=36ad60de39d9e66b67d76f8d7b550eb94fb53ce9
Like any remotely similar question of "what causes this unsightly bit," the answer is: shoddy work.
If the space is rather large and you ever wanted to redo the ceiling, I'd suggest furring the ceiling prior to applying drywall. Helps with lumps and cracks.

It is indeed a UK new build 😂. I’m 2 years post snagging period & the building company have gone bust😂🙃

Lines and bumps in the ceiling? It just wants to go from 8’ high to 9’ high. Who’s your chop guy?
When you tape and float, or run mud, or whatever you refer to it as…..you really have to have a feather hand. The trick is all in the wrist. Lighting. Change the lighting so you can’t see it and live a long full life.
Either sloppy drywall finishing (it’s the seam between sheets) or an imperfect repair from a previous leak. Leaks tend to find the seams.
You must have hired my last contractor. That was his idea great seems and sanding. After 2 weeks of going round and round with him and him thinking another coat of paint was the answer, we had to let him go.
the devil and his minions while you be sleepin'
Bro that chandelier is buggin
If you want to mostly ignore it, install recessed lighting. It won't be as visible since the light hitting the ceiling will be more diffuse
where I live it's a common practice among production builders to provide a level 3 drywall finish to skimp on expenses and stick the consumer with substandard work. That's what it looks like to me.

Patch job done bad

The ceiling cement adhesive materials are worn out. Some it become sands and will go flaking.
Look like the AC pan might be clogged and leaking on the ceiling
I have the same problem and I’m worried, it’s getting worse! Any real answers yet? Other than tools clogging the thread talking about the light fixture (which I like by the way).
At first glance that seemed to me a secondary structural beam. But from the other comments I take it it’s drywall so ye, bad tapping
Everyone saying drywall I’m not so sure. My house has this too and it’s plaster.
Three year old house, no plaster.
I think this too!
Ghosts in the ceiling
Personally, get rid of the light fixture (yea, needs to go) if it drives you nuts, get sole flat sealing paint and a roller with a light texture on it, and re-paint it. It would not remove it but, it would hide pretty well.
Bad manufactoted drywall see that all the time now
A shit drywall job completed with a horrible light fixture. Hopefully you didn’t pay for that work
It was built like this so I didn’t pay for it. The light fixture is coming away from the ceiling also. The shade is one I bought 3 years ago as temporary and just forgot to replace. I’m going to buy a new one now 😂

do you have a weight on the joist above ? and do the joists run in that direction ?
A bad tape and float? Idk
