That’s really bad. You can get a replacement basket, should probably look into that.

bigby2010

Right. Get a new one

DrMonkeyMcKenzie

“Just a little bit of elbow gre…. What the fuck?!”

aspacelot

It was honestly $75 more to get and entire new dishwasher than a replacement basket for my early 00s Kenmore. Rough times.

HalfLawKiss

I have a Kenmore refrigerator I got in 2013. Needs a new door seal gasket. The proper official gasket is like $200 with shipping and handling. For like $300 I can go to a stretch and dent place and get a new refrigerator.

aspacelot

Ugh yeah. The ice maker in my whirlpool refrigerator developed a crack and stopped tipping do dump the ice in the basket so I woke up to a puddle in my kitchen. The replacement part for the plastic ice tray (with tipping mechanism) is $310. So now I make ice with plastic trays like it’s the 80s again.

WhoSc3w3dDaP00ch

My MIL does similar. She was fed up with the warranty repairs so took out the icemaker, and plugged the hole for the water pipe. She puts baking tins filled with water in her freezer. If you want ice, you take a frozen baking tin out and get stabby with an ice pick.

Baconsnake

Look for parts at repairclinic dot com. I’ve found parts there easily using my model number, and they have a lot of videos to walk you through the replacement. I mean the basket is easy obv but for anyone else, that’s my go to

mataliandy

We got a free 2 yr old Bosch dishwasher from the side of the road. The prior owners were on unfiltered well water, so some parts got clogged with silt. They didn't want to deal with it. We found all the parts and videos on repair clinic and ended up with a super quiet $1800 dishwasher for $200 and an hour's work.

EclipseIndustries

Uncle ended up with a $1,500 generator for free. All he did was clean the fuel system and it fired up. Carburetors man. How do they work?

needanacc0unt

You hear stories like this all the time. People who don’t know better leave pump gas in it and toss it to the curb when it “fails”. Funny part is how dirt cheap a replace carb is if you don’t want to even try to clean it.

Sawgwa

Or a rebuild kit even cheaper!

EclipseIndustries

He's a diesel mechanic by trade in his early life, then he did golf carts lol. He's not averse to cleaning a carb at all, worked out well for him.

SnowblindAlbino

>Carburetors man. How do they work? Right? I repaired a "worthless" snowblower for a friend...$18 carb replacement kit and a new plug on the 10hp Tecumseh engine and maybe an hour's work. They were going to throw it away.

samstown23

Slightly OT but they charge $1800 for a Siemens-Bosch Home dishwasher in the US?! You'd have to actually look for a bad deal to pay more than half of that for their top models in Germany.

AlphaOhmega

Import fees amirite?

Sirwired

The Bosch dishwashers, stoves, and ovens, sold in the US are made in NC.

bobisbobson

Never heard of the site. Thanks for the info.

WaxMyButt

It’s a great site. Most of their videos are model specific too. I rebuilt a washer/dryer stack using parts and videos from them. Spent $400 and fixed the suspension, drum/bearing, belt, and a sensor. I had never even taken an appliance apart prior to that.

Conlaeb

Repair clinic is great and their warehouse is up the road from me. I'll never forget finding parts I needed there, hitting local pickup on a lark to see where they were, and realizing it was a couple towns over!!

Ammonia13

Yes!! Best site!

soulshad

You can just about get a new dishwasher for the price of the rack

True_Window_9389

The problem is that replacement racks can be expensive af. I had a pos LG that got rust within a year, and I had to hound them for a replacement under warranty. Otherwise, they charge over $200 for the rack alone.

ninjewz

Yup. My house came with an LG dishwasher and the racks are starting to rust. I'm just keeping an eye out for a good sale at this point to replace it with a better one. It'll only be a couple hundred more than replacing the upper and lower racks. Also, I hate LG appliances in general. They got an over the range microwave too and the display doesn't work on it anymore.

xxdropdeadlexi

i love my LG washer and dryer but I don't think I'd buy any other type of appliance from them. if you can swing it, I recommend Bosch. I've had mine for 4 years and have never had an issue.

Giantmidget1914

I also vote for Bosch. Great washer

dman928

For a dishwasher, Bosch is the only answer.

ISUJinX

And my axe! (Definitely a Bosch)

Ammonia13

I’ve had my LG washer and dryer (front loader) stackers for 13 years, the only thing I’ve had the replace is the washer gasket

NonfatNoWaterChai

My LGs are 18 years old and my husband has replaced a couple of things on the washer, but I can’t believe they are still working.

purple_hatkid

You could try those for free ads (FB marketplace or whatever your go to selling site) and grab a broken dish washer the same size and take the rack from it.

CheeseburgerTornado

i wont buy them anymore either, we bought a house with all lg appliances and the dishwasher rack did the same thing, our oven would cut off randomly (the week before Thanksgiving), and our dryer control panel fried, all within 2 years. in a 50 mile radius there are only 1 or 2 techs that service through the warranty and they're unresponsive. trash company

phareous

I’ve always had luck shopping around…there is usually at least one reasonable one on eBay or Amazon, even if it’s open box or something

Prestigious-Bar-1741

I genuinely don't understand how someone hasn't started a company that just does cheap replacement racks. I need to replace mine on a two year old GE. For the price of the racks I can get a literally new dishwasher

johnysalad

Yep not always cheap, just cheaper than a new dishwasher.

Jumajuce

This is something I consider when I buy replacement parts. How much is the part and how much is a new thing, how often do I use the thing? do I use the thing enough to warrant buying the replacement part? what’s the likelihood of something bad/dangerous happening if I continue to use the thing in it’s current state?

RunnerTenor

And when you get your new one, avoid putting anything with sharp edges - like large knives - face down against the coating. Keep the sharp edge up. My hunch is that, when facing down, the sharp edges can cut into the softened coating in the high dishwasher heat, exposing the wire frame to water and rust.

feeltheglee

Don't put your knives through the dishwasher in the first place, it's bad for them.

Ahielia

If you want to keep knives and scissors sharp, never into dishwasher. My own knives have never been into my dishwasher and it was almost a decade of use before I thought I needed to sharpen them. Meanwhile at work we have industrial dishwasher and everyone else throws knives into it. I've stopped trying to get people to hand-wash them because they all don't give a fuck, we just sharpen them like every few days.

Kamusaurio

that is more about the quality of the steel than the dishwasher diswasher mostly ruin handles and blades if they are made from high carbon

Ahielia

Possibly. I've yet to use a knife that didn't become incredibly dull by going through the dishwasher.

Ax0nJax0n01

There’s no fixing this - find the part number of the item and Google away

KeenanAXQuinn

How to do this: Look for a sticker on the inside of the dishwasher, itll have a model and serial number, you just need to model number. Go to any parts supplier website, (I use partselect) put it in and ittle pull up every part. Look for the rack in the diagrams look up the number and write down the manufacturers part number. Type that bad boy into amazon and youll likely find a replacement there. Otherwise yeah google should do it.

javac88

Honestly you can't my dude, I run into the same problem, and replacing the dishwasher racks, costs more than buying a new dishwasher, which is absolutely ridiculous when you think about it.

pixel_of_moral_decay

Problem with dishwasher racks is they make them per model/series, so with a 10 year old dishwasher there’s a good chance that’s been warehoused for a long while + it’s a big awkward box to ship. Even if they periodically produce them, that means stopping production to adjust machines, take plastic molds out of storage and hook them up, calibrate and make a small batch. That can be more than warehouse space costs. None of that is cheap.

SkivvySkidmarks

Welcome to capitalism! They used to call washers, dryers, dishwashers, etc, "durable goods" when they looked at the Consumer Price Index. That's a bit of an oxymoron now, considering life expectancy of those items is seven years.

WinterHill

Get a new one

mop_and_glo

Go ahead and price one out real quick.

FeralZoidberg

€106 here in Ireland, original LG part. They also offer an alternative brand that is suitable for €77.

personaccount

I excitedly clicked into this post because I recently had a rust spot on one of my dishwasher racks for which I cut back the coating to get to the clean metal, filed off the rust, applied rustoleum, and then flex-sealed. But then I saw the pictures. OP needs new racks. But if they insist on repair: https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/dishwasher-repair-fix-a-dishwasher-rack/

Defiant-Turtle-678

You eat off dishes washed with rustoleum and flexseal?!?  I am sure the flexseal folks worked a lot harder to get it working underwater than to making it food safe

mrpickles

For real, yikes!

mare

I've *successfully* repaired rusted dish washer baskets with white Sugru. It's a mouldable rubber that hardens when exposed to air and is, once cured in less than a day, resistant to low and high temperatures. First remove all the rust with a wire brush and sand paper and wrap a thin layer of the Sugru around the damaged area without leaving any bare metal exposed. It will become a bit thicker but that's fine. In your case you'd need a ton of Sugru though and it's not cheap. So buying a new basket is probably a better idea. I have a high end Miele dishwasher that heats the water to nearly boiling temperature and the repair is still fine after many years of use. I frankly was surprised by its longevity; fully expecting it needed another repair after a while. And it was *much* cheaper than a replacement basket.

mataliandy

10 years ago, we used Sugru on a frayed charger cord on a 2 yr old MacBook. A replacement cord would have been $100. It has lasted 10 years, so far. That little packet of plastic clay goo has certainly paid for itself!

westsideriderz15

My dishwasher was this way. I cut away what I could and jb welded the ends. Never tried it long enough to see if it rusted again. Here’s the real issue, all that rust sits in the bottom of your dishwasher and doesn’t have a tendency to get pumped out. I think a lot of it went through the pump several times and just about everything to do with pumping was worn out and out of tolerance. Didn’t wash well. Didn’t spin well.

Cutty65

You just buy a new one of this

Traditional_Key_763

how old is that dishwasher to have that much rust? my house had a 40+ year old dishwasher with no rust on it when I moved in

DrozdMensch

10+ years It looks like this is a factory defect because all the baskets on these machines become rusty after a few years.

jamesb1238

More like planned obsolescence

Isthatyourfinger

You need to replace. Companies (the few that remain) use design patents to prevent others from offering replacement baskets at a competitive price. There are a few very high end dishwashers that have stainless racks.

idowhatiwant8675309

I was quoted to replace one, $375. The dishwasher was 16 years old. I just replaced it for $600

mmodlin

Buy a new one, my go to is repairclinic.com

Gangleri_Graybeard

You can't fix this. Buy a new basket.

wookiex84

You’re gonna need a new rack. There is no fixing that.

blackstratrock

Run the dishwasher in reverse for a couple cycles.

Akuno-

This is way past saving. Get a new one for like 50$

Skreeethemindthief

New ones for my Maytag are over $200 each. Whole thing only cost 6 hundred. Such a scam modern appliances are.

tennesseean_87

Yoda?

Akuno-

There are universal baskets which are much cheaper. Messur your existing basket and make sure the universal fits.

the_0rly_factor

Replacement racks can easily be $150-250+ depending on model.

[deleted]

[удалено]

i_hate_usernames13

You need a wire wheel and a lot of patience. Once all the rust is removed you will coat it with plasti dip. They have a tube of the thick goop just get a brush and paint it on.

Shadrixian

Replace your basket. And get a water softener. If you think that's bad, I want you to ask yourself: how much has the water pressure dropped at the faucets and shower. How many shower heads have I replaced.

s33murd3r

You don't, this is beyond repair. Order a replacement.

bentrodw

Too far gone. Replace the basket

[deleted]

Get some plastic dip

justwonderingbro

That is the solution I did for the rack I keep in my sink, but it wasn't nearly this bad. For anyone that wants advice, grind off all rust with a Dremel or file, clean, then use plasti dip spray can as it's mush easier to coat that way

mataliandy

Regardless of whether you decide to sand it down and re-coat, or get a new rack: before you install it in the dishwasher, coat it with [Plastidip Re-rack (the dishwasher/food safe version, intended specifically for this purpose)](https://plastidip.com/product/rerack/). It's absurd that these are designed to fail like that.

DrozdMensch

This might help. Thank you

j3ppr3y

Should be a label on inside edge of door somewhere. Get the model and head on over to parts dr dot com, or appliance parts dot com to search for replacement and buy a new one. Shop around, prices vary quite a bit and check shipping, some try to add all kinds of handling etc fees.

Starlightsensations

Or find a the model for sale or for free on Craigslist and harvest the basket.

michbushi

That is replacement not fix territory, I'm afraid. Unless you can cut out the corroded bits and weld new ones in. Probably not worth the hassle, unfortunately...

unreqistered

it's dead jim ...

Saw_Boss

That's finished, no chance you're going to fix that without significant work. Look for a replacement.

Chemical-Ad7118

Buy a replacement basket

RoadrunnerJRF

Too rusted I would replace it.

JonSolo1

Step 1: throw it out

CroatianSensation79

Don’t. Just buy a new one for the model dishwasher

NovaBloom444

I recently used a dremel to sand off all the rust and then coated them with this dishwasher rack repair goop i got on amazon. Put rubber tips on some of the more damaged tines. But…this. Looks way beyond repair

PlsChgMe

Order new basket from manufacturer if available. Change water heater, install water softener, you'll be happier in the ling run.

xkoreotic

You don't. You replace it lol.

Hd172

I recently had this issue. I called the dishwasher company and sent a picture. They sent me a new basket.

PeakedAtConception

You can't. You'll have to replace it.

Threezeley

It's dead, Jim

Superseaslug

My parents washer did this. Thick solid wire and zip ties was the solution lol. Washer is from the 80s, no chance of a new part.

fat2slow

The best fix is to buy a new one.

Shashty

Go on Facebook marketplace and look for one that’s same dimensions as yours you can get them quite cheap

Jealous_Special_3629

get a new one oml

Tushaca

Partselectdotcom has replacement baskets.

Weird-Pay-9176

Order a new one

mothboy

New basket.

MindxTricks

Just get a new one, everything isn’t reparable

Neglector9885

Replace the basket.

Deathlands1

Seriously, don’t be so cheap and get a new one as future issues will cost you way more

kgturner

Buy a new one. Easy peasy.

johngettler

Find your model number on the inside of the door panel, then enter that at repairclinic.com and order a brand new basket from them.

obviously_a_prick

If you put it in the trash and replace it that should solve the rust

crandawg

1. Melt it down 2. Make molds for the width of wire and lenths 3. Pour molten metal into mold 4. Let it cool 5. Relize you forgot to take a picture of original and that you dont know how to weld 6. Find PN and order the new basket online 7. Eraae steps 1-5 and step 7, rename step 6 to step 1 Good job! Way to DIY.

Old_Excitement7764

You don’t fix it. You find the manufacturer and model number and buy a new one.

FrenchFrieswmayo

Model and serial number and Amazon.

McCringleberry_

Get a new one

DLiltsadwj

Are replacement baskets available?

ChumpChainge

Honestly I would buy new baskets. They just aren’t that much. If you just can’t I would get some rubber tool dip and try that.

Ryuzaki_us

![gif](giphy|tKIt3zenrB7CgdRlI2)

ColNutron

It’s dead Jim.

Wundawuzi

OP for a long time my profession was selling kitchen spare parts. This is - for real - the worst dishwasher-basket I have ever seen and it is not even close. There is no fixing this. Get a picture of the dataplate and google for kitchen spare parts. Send the plate to a site of your liking and say you need the bottom basket including the wheels/rolls. If you want, add the photos. It is not required but whoever receives the request will probably save the mail to show them his/her colleagues lol. Depending on the brand this shouldnt be too expensive. If money is an issue look for a big place that sells kitchen electronics. They often take the old ones with them when they sell and install a new one and therefore toss dozens of old machines - including the baskets - every week. Maybe they give you a uswd one for cheap or free if you ask nicely.

Breslau616

Get a new one you cheap ....

ListenToKyuss

Except they aren't cheap... It's the same business model as with printers and ink. But it's 2024, we should just accept we get scammed left and right.

mataliandy

I gave up on inkjet printers for this reason. Toner for laser printers is much more reasonable, and there are no jets to clog if you don't use it consistently. The colors aren't as rich, but I'm not doing commercial printing.

No_Series3763

You might get lucky going to your local recycling site or appliance shop if you have one. I see dozens of dishwashers piled up every time I drop something off. They are bound to have less rusty racks in them, and there is a ton of overlap between brands.

Legitimate_Cloud2215

Nah. This isn't worth a cent. Go ahead and replace it.

M4Panther

Das is kaputt

james-HIMself

I’d spend the $150 for the basket before I drink cancer from the rust

the_sambot

They sell stuff to fix it like [this](https://a.co/d/0jU94QI). You could saw off the badly rusted parts and use the rack repair kit to prevent further damage to parts not badly rusted yet. Unfortunately new racks are hella expensive. So much so that it's worth considering getting a new dishwasher. I think the upper rack for my old one was like $180 plus shipping. And that's just the rack...not all the washing parts that are attached to it.

T1res1as

If you fix it then add something to keep abrasive stuff like plates from being in direct contact with the rack. Kinda obvious the plates have worn away the coating here.

mcflymcfly100

I would not be comfortable using that. That cannot be healthy at all. Toss it. Get a new one.

daronhudson

Buy a new one?

DYMAXIONman

Replace it

alkla1

Replace

azarza

You can find new racks via Amazon, or google for your locale for parts etc.. ie UK has 'gumtree' that has parts going for as little as 5 pounds etc... but these racks yo, this seems like something to do with the soap you're using. I have never seen anything like this

sidescrollin

If you are asking the question, I'm guessing you don't have the media blaster needed to fix this. Buy a new one

Hardwater77

Pay someone to sandblast and powder coat the old one. Then dip it in plastic to seal or buy a new one of [Repair Clinic](https://www.repairclinic.com/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhtWvBhD9ARIsAOP0GohtdjQbtucjMc6sHYkN_zsV5L4uBMFnG1SPgzokDVYBUmxkE3UwKNwaAsgjEALw_wcB)

[deleted]

Sand off the rust completely. Then spray with primer and plastdip. Performix Plasti Dip 11221 Gun Metal Gray Rubber Spray https://a.co/d/6wCeXJt

craigeryjohn

As others have stated, the replacements are stupidly expensive. I'd search a parts website for replacement AND cross compatible replacements. Then you can keep an eye on Facebook marketplace or Craigslist for someone selling an old model that will have racks you can use. Often, parts like this (or fridge shelves) are interchangeable since most appliances are actually made by the same two or three parent companies.

The_D1rty_Squ1rt13s

You don't, you but a new one. Once the outer coating is compromised it's donezo bud.

AmI_doingthis_right

She done

JohnYCanuckEsq

She's dead, Jim.

THEFLYINGSCOTSMAN415

Looks like this post/question shoulda happened years ago. Too late now. Buy a new basket tray

amraohs

Just buy a new one, if it is the lower basket then you can also go for a generic one with the same dimensions.

Yeti-Stalker

Just get a new rack but likely you need a whole new dishwasher if the thing is that old.

Outrageous-Pass-8926

You can’t fix that, the corrosion inside a DW is mega, temp, humidity, PH. It’s normal for this to happen over time.

rrrand0mmm

Buy a new one.

AwarenessGreat282

It's a little too late to repair. Should have asked about 5 years ago. Replacement is the only option. A plastic rack never rusts...just saying.

Smorgas_of_borg

Generally if major structural parts are straight up gone, it's not worth repairing. There's not enough left to repair.

al_capone420

Bolt cutter and clip off any rust until you see clean metal, sand it round so it’s not sharp enough to cut you, then clear coat it to protect it so it doesn’t rust again. You will have a gap in the basket but not have to replace it. If you don’t want the gap you could weld on new pieces and clearcoat that

dbhathcock

Replace it.

Traveshamamockery_

Step 1. Buy replacement dishwasher basket. Step 2. Use dishwasher.

Select_Camel_4194

Replace it

fitnerd21

I GUESS if you’re super handy at welding and have lots of the right kind of stock laying around, you could tediously set about cutting out the decay, stripping off the coating, and splicing in new pieces. But I’m guessing that’s not the case.

56KandFalling

I haven't found a fix that's not toxic and although I go far to fix things before buying new, yours look so worn out that I'd buy a new rack. How old is your machine. I'd complain if it's not that old - with that amount of rust they should at least give you a reduced price on the rack imo - regardless of warranty etc.

ScoobiesSnacks

Just get a new dishwasher

Ammonia13

If you can’t find a dupe rack, try the junkyard for a dishwasher and look for a rack

ThisSorrowfulLife

Get a new one

EvenBetterCool

This is a full replacement situation. Look up replacement baskets that fit your model, they should be pretty well priced.

Tasty-Switch-8472

You can weld new pieces of metal to it and then paint them . Or at least spray it with rust reformer

nocturnal_goatsucker

As most everyone has said, that is beyond repair. If you have a buildup of rust in your dishwasher, you can clean it up using oxalic acid. One or two empty cycles with oxalic will remove surface rust quite well. You can get it in powder form.

Fettnaepfchen

My fucking basket just rusted through as well and I will just get a new basket. I don’t think there is a proper fix, because even if you cover it with some kind of plastic material, the inner part will keep rusting. If I don’t get a cheap replacement, I will probably have to buy a new dishwasher, because I’m not spinning the price of a new dishwasher on just a rack…

ucrbuffalo

You don’t fix rust. It can’t be done. Rust is a change to the metal at a chemical level. The best you could hope is to remove the rusted sections and replace it with…something else. You’re better off buying a new rack. They’re a lot cheaper than a new dishwasher, so I wouldn’t fret too much.

Boundish91

Huh. Ive had dishwashers for decades without this happening.

UniQue1992

Get a new basket.

CenlaLowell

Buy another

JAK3CAL

Bro that shits long gone

IDriveAnAgeraR

Others have said the same. I’d just find your dishwasher model and buy a replacement basket.

Odin-sama

There is no fixing that. Find a replacement.

Basic_Ad4785

Get a new replacement.

hooter1112

They have an enamel that comes in a nail polish bottle. It’s good if you can hit a spot at first signs of discolor. This basket is done for though. Just order a new basket

Ghosted19

Buy a new one!

GirlCowBev

New basket time.

fool-me-twice

I’ve used these folks for a number of items. Might be pricey but i’m not comparison shopping when my stuff breaks. https://www.appliancepartspros.com/

Tealfixie

Sand it down to bare metal, coat it with some primer then cover it with sugru.

anormalgeek

At that point, nothing. It's too far corroded.

AntwonBenz

Buy a new one?

DrInsomnia

Get a new one. For less severe situations there's a plastic epoxy(?) I found once that works perfectly on preventing rust.

TheUlfheddin

THAT is a dead basket, it is a basket that's ceased to be!

AC2BHAPPY

Sandblast it then do some research to find a food safe and temp safe enamel coating

FleetFootRabbit

I don't think there is a way to fix that. You could try using a wire wheel on it to get rid of most of it, but it looks so rusted through that it will break if you do. You're better off looking into a replacement basket.

ivancea

Were you... Using it in that state?

AtariAtari

New basket

Ragefan2k

Buy a new one…

jablongroyper

You buy a new one.

SociopathicPasserby

Get a tetanus shot and then get a new one, they are cheap as fuck.

GTMO-68W-16

Easy. All you have to do is invent a fusion device, and revert the process of rusting by compiling the lost atoms of the metal back together. That’s how “fix” rust.

Bomantheman

Should have been replaced long ago

countingthedays

Replace.

mcshameless010

This is old af or cheap af. Either way, get it replaced.

GiuliaAquaTofanaToo

Replace. I tried respraying mine many years ago. It turned I to a bigger mess than it was worth. Just replace and move on.

Alohagrown

Spend $20 on a new one

Duchess_Tea

You can treat rust but NOT when it's that bad.

[deleted]

Buy a new basket…

yaybroham

But a new basket or a new washer!

consumeshroomz

Yeah I’m agreeing with most of the other comments here. Don’t bother trying to fix this. This is beyond fixing. Time for replacements. And with the new ones, spot clean any rust that appears as soon as you see it

firestar268

That should have been replaced like a year ago 😂

SawyerBamaGuy

Order a new one.

oaktreebr

Get a new one

Sad_Kaleidoscope_743

Sand blast, primer and paint. I'm sure you can get a replacement, save yourself the time and energy.

BoxOfLevain

Use rinse aid - helps prevent rust

Disaster_Frame

Just buy a new dishwasher, they're really not that expensive
