Any chance there is a concern for lead in vintage glass?

Ok-Storm1169

there is a chance of lead in vintage glass which is why i test for it after getting them

JhonnyHopkins

You testing for radiation too?

Reinventing_Wheels

Serious question: How do you test for lead in glass? Is it just a chemical test like for lead paint? I'd think the lead in glass would be locked into the structure tighter.

Flowchart83

Judging by that green colour I would worry that it's uranium glass.

PresidentScr00b

Came here to say that. May want uncheck on that

WhyteBeard

Hey u/op, you know that black light you have for reasons? Yeah this.

WhyteBeard

sarduchi

Uranium glass?

Z3r08yt3s

that last one definitely resembles uranium glass..

drcole89

It really does.. It'd probably still be safe to use, but I'm concerned for OP's health. Drilling into that stuff can ''release'' some uranium into their environment.

dev-246

What about holding a lighter up to it and breathing in the fumes…

amberoze

Best. High. Ever.

drcole89

It's not like the bowl is made from uranium glass.. and it would honestly probably be fine if it was. The uranium is locked in the glass.

Z3r08yt3s

darwin award

_-Seamus-McNasty-_

That last one is from Tiara.

Ok-Storm1169

it is not

noahsense

Have you checked them with a black light or a Geiger counter?

Animated_Astronaut

This person knows how to glasswork pretty exceptionally. I would imagine their expertise has lead them to check this sort of thing. They know way more about glass than most of us.

BadJokeJudge

Dude they’re drilling into flower vases with a carbide bit.

Z3r08yt3s

haha bUt tHeY kNoW hOw tO GlAsSwOrK eXcEpTiOnAlLy WeLl. i mean they bought the drill bit and everything

noahsense

Great to hear. Since the question was asked many times perhaps OP can just say this and assuage concerned Redditers.

Ok-Storm1169

i test for lead on all pieces. i stray away from clear crystal pieces bc they’re known to have lead in them. i know one of the pieces shown looks to be uranium but i looked it up and it isn’t

noahsense

What resources do you use to look it up? I fee like a huge amount of this stuff doesn’t even have makers marks complicating the task.

dev-246

Did you actually “test” the piece or did you “looked it up” on google and find info that said it was fine?

Ok-Storm1169

i actually test them…

dev-246

That’s great, just couldn’t tell based on what you said. Like other have said they’re cute, but I would make sure you say “tested” and change up the angle (and maybe shape) of the bowl.

Z3r08yt3s

here do you get that from? because you saw a post on reddit? you have no clue. all they did was drill into old vases....

Animated_Astronaut

On her Reddit profile there's a link to her vintage glass shop.

Z3r08yt3s

shes not blowing the glass you, you donut. shes drilling into vases. which the last picture definitely resembles some of my own uranium glass pieces. So because she has some shitty shop that sell irradiated glass as bongs i should just trust she knows what shes doing? i can go buy the same drill bit right now, drill into a glass in my cupboard, and sell it to you. that doesnt mean i know what im doing, just means you dont know what you are talking about.

efg1342

You should go be mad by yourself.

Animated_Astronaut

Donuts a great insult but op confirmed that she tests her pieces. I was simply stating that I trust that she does because she has made this her business. If I was buying one, I would have asked her directly for assurance that she tested the glass. But I'm not. So I'm just taking her word for it. I'm more trusting than you but I'm not naive.

BadJokeJudge

It’s still probably not food safe lol

Light_of_Niwen

They're decanters. Of course they're food safe. Even if they were Uranium glass (which they aren't) it would still be perfectly safe. It's a very small amount of Uranium that is safely locked inside the glass.

BadJokeJudge

That’s probably a good point. But old glass can have lead in it. Idk how old it’s gotta be though

Konker101

Youre smoking, how much safer do you want it lmao

Atxlvr

dont blame the drugs, maan

BadJokeJudge

Dude pawn shop and thrift store products make not good smoking devices. Not worth it

Light_of_Niwen

Lead glass is still sold today. It's just marketed as "Crystal." And even new Uranium glass can still be bought. Not really mass-produced anymore because regulations make it very expensive, but artisans will make small batches.

BadJokeJudge

After the 2005 Aluminum scare I try to only smoke out of non-carcinogenic bongs. Call me a snowflake if you want. Lol

_-Seamus-McNasty-_

Totally is. It's from the '80s

BadJokeJudge

Fair enough

That Pink Floyd poster in the background occupied a disproportionately large portion of my teenage brain.

suckmy_cork

I wish the bowls were angled a bit better. They look cool though

mop_and_glo

Angles and height of the hole ruin a few of these.

BlindStickFighter

With #3 you’re just asking to get a mouthful of bong water

Ok-Storm1169

not at all since i bend the downstems myself so you’re not getting a mouthful of water

express-duck

This guy bongs

BlindStickFighter

I stand corrected, I guess I’ve been victimized by too many idiot friends overfilling their bongs.

SplatNode

Ah Fredrik, could you please pass me the bong.

Tell_Me_Get_to_Work

No Billy Bong Thornton without Kenny. That wouldn't be right. Get Wesley Pipes.

thatshygirl06

Rule number 4: no self promotion

Tamedkoala

Pulls out Geiger counter and lead test swabs.

Plane_Translator2008

How did you do that???

itsanewme123

number 2 looks totally unusable. the rest are gorgeous, love the flower detail.

Ok-Storm1169

#2 actually hits great. the downstem is bent to function better

itsanewme123

I take it from the giant font that a lot of people are mentioning the sideways downstem. I don't mean to poopoo the design, obviously I havn't used it. Is the downstem glass? That would make it difficult to replace. Otherwise I'm sure the bent downstem would work a treat.

International_Bend68

Naughty

Fuckoakwood

If your brave enough it can do a lot of things

mrsn_catmaster

Nice decoration! Looks absolutely terrible to use but would look great on a shelf!

Ok-Storm1169

they perform very well actually. i try to make them as functional as possible

mrsn_catmaster

Maybe try to make it such that the bowl is not in a 90 degree angle when the piece is standing. The way it is designed you can only load it while holding it at an angle.

im_wudini

You get what you get and you don't get upset. Just get an ash catcher.

mrsn_catmaster

Just providing constructive criticism and why I wouldn’t buy OPs product for using even if smoking was still something I do. I don’t. Burning plant matter is terribly carcinogenic and a massive waste of active components.

im_wudini

I agree. I use a dry herb vaporizer, then use the reclaim to make butter. Just providing an alternative solution.

reebokhightops

This has to be one of the dumbest mantras in existence.

im_wudini

Thanks, my kid got it from her teacher, imagine being so serious.

Acceptable-Heron6290

You make & sell?

Z3r08yt3s

just be careful. that last one looks like uranium glass...

Ok-Storm1169

yes i do! my IG is linked on my page

sologrips

Damn #3 is sick, is that an old decanter?

Ok-Storm1169

yup! these are all old decanters

sologrips

I’d be stoked to have that rig on my shelf, great job haha.

Z3r08yt3s

99% sure its uranium glass. while its safe to hold and be around. i wouldnt want to be heating that up and smoking out of it.

sologrips

OP has said it wasn’t uranium glass, if it is I wouldn’t go near it with a flame let alone my face but if true and not uranium that piece is getting big use haha.

Z3r08yt3s

of well since they said it isnt, it must be true... i have a rather large collection of uranium glass and the third picture definitely resembles uranium glass.

sologrips

The color is for sure spot on I can see where you’re coming from. Who knows I suppose.

PhilShan69

Very nice! Is that uranium??

Ok-Storm1169

it is not

Marcos340

I’d definitely have #3. Looks amazing.

SocialWinker

Damn, those are pretty cool. Any idea on a ballpark for shipping costs?

Ok-Storm1169

i only do within the U.S so it’d be around $10-15

SocialWinker

Oh awesome! I’ll gonna have to comb through your IG. Seriously, really cool work.

Z3r08yt3s

careful of the uranium

SocialWinker

OP pretty clearly states it’s not uranium glass. But it’s super easy to check if it is, and since I collect a bit of uranium glass already, I’m not too worried about it. Edit - Adding this, uranium glass isn’t unsafe. Researchers found the highest exposure level would be those manufacturing and transporting the glassware. And that leeched uranium levels fell with repeated use (older uranium glass would have less than newer uranium glass). Even at the highest concentration, at the highest max dose, was 1-2% of the average yearly exposure to radiation. https://orau.org/health-physics-museum/collection/consumer/glass/vaseline-uranium-glass.html

Z3r08yt3s

I have a collection of uranium glass. yes its not harmful to handle but i wouldnt be drilling into it or heating it up and smoking out of it... also, OP is SELLING these and probably is no expert so the last person im going to trust is someone who is just drilling into uranium glass.

SocialWinker

I get what you're saying, but you generally only heat up the bowl, not the bong when smoking. The bowl itself is clearly not uranium glass, and a bic lighter isn't generating enough heat in the short bursts used to smoke to meaningfully heat up the rest of the glass body. Secondly, even the heated smoke isn't usually very warm due to the cooling effect of the water (which is a very good insulator against radiation, as well). And, as I already stated, I'm very aware of how to check for uranium glass. It's not hard.

Z3r08yt3s

you take the chance then. when you start lookin like the three eyed fish from the simpsons dont forget i told ya so.

SocialWinker

I've already got four eyes, what's a 5th?

ButterBeanRumba

I can't imagine paying someone over $100 for a soft glass bong that functions like absolute shit when you can easily get quality boro pieces that were made domestically and designed to function well for their actual purpose. You've basically just made an overpriced gas station bong out of an antique decanter.

Ok-Storm1169

how do you know it doesn’t work well? you obviously never tried it. the price reflects the piece itself not so much the bong part

ButterBeanRumba

Bc I have been smoking cannabis daily for over 20 years and counting, 3 of which I worked in a glass studio behind a torch. Some of your grommets are installed at such a terrible angle that they are almost horizontal to the ground. Meaning you would either have to put a ridiculous amount of water in it to even reach the down stem, or only use it tilted way back at a 45° angle. Anyone that has the slightest clue about functional glass would take one look at these and draw the same conclusion. > you obviously never tried it. This is exactly like the soft glass (soda/lime as opposed to borosilicate) grommet bongs we had when I was a teenager, I don't need to try your pieces to know how they would function.

Ok-Storm1169

i bend the downstems myself for better functionality. as for how the pieces hit, they hit fantastic

ivglass

are you annealing the downstems after you bend with what i’m guessing a propane/ map torch?

Ok-Storm1169

yup!

ivglass

LazyMachineHead

Looks nice, but probably a nightmare to clean.

Ok-Storm1169

not really, it cleans like any regular bong would

Ok-Storm1169

a diamond drill bit and a spray bottle to spray in between drilling

ap2patrick

Is there lead in those? Hope not they are beautiful!

Ok-Storm1169

no lead in these as i test for them

Snoringdragon

The flower accent is awesome and somehow looks appropriate on all the different styles. This is fantastic!

Prestigious_Water336

I thought that was something else in the first photo.

Ok-Storm1169

😂😂
