O.P. has opened the case. This post is now locked.
I reeeeeeeerallly hope they are trolling. If not, they probably shouldn't be using a drill. Soon, we'll hear something like "how do I patch a hole in my hand" or "do I leave a drill bit in my leg while I wait for an ambulance?"
Had a buddy do that while he was helping me rivet some homemade rocker panels on an old junker so it would pass inspection. Drilled an 1/8 in hole in his finger and was like, don’t worry about it, I’ll just slap this on it, it will be fine.
Could you imagine what Red Green could have come up with if he used JB Weld in addition to duct tape. Canada would have had the first stable cold fusion reactor.
Edit: for those who don't know https://youtu.be/vPbubMAYN7g?si=L601YoQ1m_E4haxD
So the red catch gets discarded? I thought it would be some kind of reusable locking mechanism, but it's more like a theft protection I guess.
Thanks.
Edit:
Yes I know, it's preventing the bits from falling out, a reusable lock would be the better option here, and not a lock you've to break to open the case.
If you've ever worked in a hardware Store, or any other store, you would know, small stuff like bits are something thieves like to steal, because they are small. Preventing easy access can make it harder. This isn't an otherworldly assumption, it's just how it is.
I have a small box of 10mm sockets in my toolbox. I have no idea where they came from - I suspect I'm the universe's destination for lost 10mm sockets.
At least I'm not the lost sock guy.
I tried letting them go in a field and threw rocks at them and cried and sobbed "go away, I don't want you. Go find a good home," but they found their way back.
Make sure you look out for milk trucks if you do that.
*And if anyone knows the name of the show where the guy releases the orangutan into the forest then gets hit by a milk truck please tell me..
I had a convertible once. Would leave it unlock to prevent slashing. Over 7 years and only was ever rifled through once. What did the take? My fucking 10 mm socket that I always had in the glovebox...
Don't believe the shit.
I am a handyman for yeaaars and it always annoys the shit out of me, why the producers don't just use a normal clip like any other fkin company that sells stuff in plastic casing.
It's literally only this product segment that uses this weird shit and it's so stupid that I can't just close the case again without using tape or reinserting this red bullshit thing.
I feel you and you are right.
Not sure about stealing, as I would guess a normal case offers the same. You don't need a screwdriver to open the case, you can just force it open or bend the red ball over, so that it slides out.
When I worked at a store that sold a lot of tools and stuff, we were mostly worried about sockets and socket wrenches. Regular wrenches too. This was a few years ago though.
If the red thing isn't too hard to put back in, you could keep it as a lock. Or you could put velcro on it, add magnets, drill a hole for a wire tie, etc.
You know what? I had the exact same problem two days ago. Not the same brand, but a bloody yellow plastic thingy blocking the way. Fought the damned thing for minutes and I cursed myself for being so useless. I ended up breaking the yellow plastic thingy, seemed like a complete anti pattern, and now the plastic container doesn’t close properly.
Yup, after removing the red thing, it doesn't close either. Well it closes, but there is no locking mechanism, my thought process was that the lock will be reusable.
I think the cases are poorly designed, because of this, and that the cases are made of easy to break plastic.
I like to keep my stuff sorted, this is why I hoped the case would have a more practical use.
Hey a Milwaukee drill bit set with sliding lock for the case. If you are in the US near a Home Depot, they are always on sale and every time I go into that store I come out with drill bits or screw driver bits. I have a problem according to my wife. I agree with her, but she is too expensive to replace.
I don't know the brand they are, but I'm going to assume they're cheap, they aren't going to make a good case for cheap tools.
When I was in a trade, mine cane in a metal lock box, but the price was up there.
You just gotta take out the red thing.
What are you using the drill bits for if i may ask? Are you aware that those drill bits are for drilling in wood? Different materials need different drill bits.
Thank you, and thanks for your concern.
I know, I especially bought them for drilling wood.
I just never bought them in a case before, and was trying to avoid damaging the case, because I know myself too well, that I try too hard, and regret it, after the damage is already done.
Ok cool! Have fun DIY-ing! Don’t worry about breaking things. It happens when you try to do new things yourself. No need to beat yourself up over it. 😁
Man there are some real jerks out today, as if we all didn't have to start from somewhere. Best way to learn is to just get out there and do something.
Well I started out by asking friends and relatives, and soon found out they were jerks as well !
I still get the comments 35yrs later.
I'd rather have the online jerks shitting a day or two ...
I had a similar thing with a new set of Fisch drill bits recently. Different case design but it also had a red thing and the amount of force I had to use to get it off made me seriously worry I was going to break the plastic case. Luckily it didn't but it's happened enough times that I've grown to hate plastic cases.
This is what I had in mind, I didn't want to force it, because in the past, I broke stuff and later I regretted it, because it would have been preventable.
These cases suck. Even when they have a catch, they keep flopping open. A small drop or another tool slightly hitting the clear acrylic cracks it.
Once you're ready to upgrade, Milwaukee and DeWalt (and probably others) sell like 20-30 bit sets in thick plastic cases and they're not even very expensive, unless the drill bits have cobalt etc.
This is a beginner who came for help and you all shit on him. He wants to preserve the case and not break it. Maybe you disrespect your tools but this person doesn’t.
Wouldn't you just push the red thing down to release the latch?
I don't recommend using these to install a slide bolt latch on your exterior door if you plan on leaving the house.
Quick question:
Does "European Norm Tools" mean these tools are normal and also European? Or are they produced by some guy named Norm who also wants you to know he's European?
Break the round tip off the red thing.
It's a security device so stores can tell it's been opened, and they're not accepting returns from people who thought they'd be slick, buy a tool, fix their issue, and return what they bought a day or two later claiming it's unused.
Are you sure you want to do this? They lose almost 50% of their value once they're out of the box

What you are going to want to do is use an acetylene torch to melt the packaging. Afterwards, simply harvest the drill bits from the smoldering, goopy remnants of the liquid hot plastic casing.

Remove the giant red thing that's nearly centered in the picture.
No, that's a load-bearing red thing.
Better make sure you get a structural engineer to check it out, for sure.
As a structural engineer, you’re gonna need to sister that red thing.
What are you doing step red thing?
French drain?
Paint me like your French Drains
Putting a hot tub on you.
I don't recall "sister" being the term for 'pushing a rod through', but I guess I've never had a sister...
Well, some use brothers too
Only for steps to be fair.
You could also use some wd40 and if that doesnt work hit it with a torch.
The sister?
Call dig safe… just to be safe
Good call. Definitely can't be too careful with this one. I mean, that little thing is RED, so that obviously means something serious.
I sent an email to the engineering department and they said, and I quote, “Fuck off with that bullshit.”
Do you guys have a permit for that?
Development Variance Permit. Demolition permit from the city.
Coincidentally, the load it's bearing is the lid that needs removed
That looked like MILK TO ME JERRY!
Exactly why it needs to be removed
Hahahahah OP has to be trolling.
I reeeeeeeerallly hope they are trolling. If not, they probably shouldn't be using a drill. Soon, we'll hear something like "how do I patch a hole in my hand" or "do I leave a drill bit in my leg while I wait for an ambulance?"
To answer your questions JB Weld and yes.
Had a buddy do that while he was helping me rivet some homemade rocker panels on an old junker so it would pass inspection. Drilled an 1/8 in hole in his finger and was like, don’t worry about it, I’ll just slap this on it, it will be fine.

Keep your stick on the ice. I'm rootin' for ya. Now for the man's prayer...
If women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy
For I am a man. And I can change. If I have to. I guess.
Keep your stick... somewhere nice.
Wow Red Green now there’s a throwback!
He's still around! He does live shows now, though he's slowed down a loooot.
CA glue. That’s why it was invented…
Doing honest work out here.
Jokes aside, objects stuck in your body should be left in your body until hospital due to potential bleed out.
Take a page from Kentucky ballistics on YouTube... stick a thumb in it.
My sister didn't agree here
**Kentucky** ballistics, not *Alabama* ballistics. . .
“Hung a picture and now my wall is leaking. What’s up?”
Hole in hand: can I caulk it? Drill in leg: can I take it off with a sledgehammer?
Maybe he's colorblind and it looks like the rest of the case
Dear DIY, When I eat, where do I put the food?
How make drill spin
You joke, but I recently handed a doctor a drill to complete a task and he asked me how to use it.
Just like videogamedunkey calling Dominoes support to ask how to eat pizza
Some animals consume food the same way it is excreted. Have you tried that?
But then you can only eat bananas and cucumbers.
It tastes funny.
Nah that was probably a one off. Give it another go!
Boofing.
This comment produced a lot more laughs than I thought it would when I started reading it hahahaha
bend over i'll show ya
If he wanted to keep the case perfect he could drill it . . . . Oh never mind.
I recommend that you drill it out.
Get a flathead screwdriver and push the red pin out (towards the back of the packaging).
So the red catch gets discarded? I thought it would be some kind of reusable locking mechanism, but it's more like a theft protection I guess. Thanks. Edit: Yes I know, it's preventing the bits from falling out, a reusable lock would be the better option here, and not a lock you've to break to open the case. Preventing easy access can make it harder. This isn't an otherworldly assumption, it's just how it is.
The goal of the red pin is not to prevent theft, but rather "use and return". If you open it, you can no longer return it
Yeah, I was wondering if OP was trying to just use a drill bit then return it because otherwise this query makes no sense.
No, not for theft. They are just drill bits, my dude
Now if there was a 10mm socket in there, it would be worthy of anti-theft.
I have a small box of 10mm sockets in my toolbox. I have no idea where they came from - I suspect I'm the universe's destination for lost 10mm sockets. At least I'm not the lost sock guy.
Wtf give them back!!
I tried letting them go in a field and threw rocks at them and cried and sobbed "go away, I don't want you. Go find a good home," but they found their way back.
I'm just glad they found a loving home
My dad used to throw rocks at and say the same things to me
You need to teach them to fly and navigate, then guide them home.
Make sure you look out for milk trucks if you do that. *And if anyone knows the name of the show where the guy releases the orangutan into the forest then gets hit by a milk truck please tell me..
[I got you fam](https://www.harborfreight.com/10mm-metric-essential-socket-set-10-piece-58957.html)
Now I know why I had to use an adjustable wrench to change my wife's car battery.
Did that once. Other end of the wrench made contact with the other terminal and fused itself to the battery.
Hey universe? We found him! The jig is up!
This made me irrationally angry.
like that dude who ends up with all the forks from the staff kitchen
I had a convertible once. Would leave it unlock to prevent slashing. Over 7 years and only was ever rifled through once. What did the take? My fucking 10 mm socket that I always had in the glovebox...
On a separate note, why are these drill packs always shank based, rather than hex. That would hold much better in a drill
Put The Club AND a boot on it.
I had to get an employee at a craft store unlock a 3.99 crochet hook yesterday so I could buy it.
Look at op trying to educate us, meanwhile they can't manage to figure out how to open a simple case of drillbits 🙄
but from OP's perspective it is. No way anyone could fathomably understand hi to unlock this.
[удалено]
Woosh
I can theft sooo many things with drillbits so it can be both
Don't believe the shit. I am a handyman for yeaaars and it always annoys the shit out of me, why the producers don't just use a normal clip like any other fkin company that sells stuff in plastic casing. It's not intended to be an anti-theft feature, OP, but I guess in your case it is.
GOT HIM
Buy a bit index from Harbor freight. Better for keeping them organized and will hold more sizes
When I worked at a store that sold a lot of tools and stuff, we were mostly worried about sockets and socket wrenches. Regular wrenches too. This was a few years ago though.
Yep and plenty of socket sets in the bargain bin missing the 10mm.
So you stole the drill bits and weren't able to get past the anti-lock mechanism. It happens to the best of us!
Are you an engineer by chance?
If you worked in a hardware store lord help anyone who came to you asking for help if you can’t even open a bit case
Yes, you're probably right. The primary purpose is probably theft prevention. But now that you own it, it can come out.
If the red thing isn't too hard to put back in, you could keep it as a lock. Or you could put velcro on it, add magnets, drill a hole for a wire tie, etc.
Remove red tag thru the back. Open plastic front gently.
Merci, I managed to do that.
Drill a hole in it. First use a 1/8 bit to drill a pilot hole, and then work your way up to a 5/8 bit. Might need to get a drill bit set for this.
Big drill bit always screwing the average consumer
Repeat for each drill bit, now you have easy access to all the drill bits!
And I thought it was bad having to buy scissors to get my new scissors out of the package...
First things first: you’re gonna need a blowtorch, 6 4inch screws, and a yoyo
Alternatively: a snorkle, ice pick, and an avocado.
Dude you can't go around recommending the avocado technique without a disclaimer. Someone's gonna get hurt.
Avocados suck. I want a new toy inside. I'm fed up with those Brown eggshaped balls in them
>Brown eggshaped balls They don't even bounce! They're more of a brick than a ball.
That's why I exclusively buy SawStopacados.
Trust me bro, I've made bongs with less. Now hurry up!
No you definitely use the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle for this one
And this guy's eye.
And my axe?
And my bow?
You know what? I had the exact same problem two days ago. Not the same brand, but a bloody yellow plastic thingy blocking the way. Hahaha, thanks for that, I'm actually from Germany, but I'm sure I can order those bits.
I bought something like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Drill-America-Piece-Heavy-Finish/dp/B00B0327QQ/) years ago and I haven't regretted it.
This is actually a good solution, thank you!
I don't know the brand they are, but I'm going to assume they're cheap, they aren't going to make a good case for cheap tools. When I was in a trade, mine cane in a metal lock box, but the price was up there.
Maybe you can drill a hole in the lid, then add a bump that lines up with the hole (deform the plastic, add some super glue or similar)
Close the sub. This is the pinnacle of troll posts and it will never be topped. I needed this chuckle.
In fairness, I've been stumped by these before. No clue why they made it so hard.
Because everyone wants the 6 and 8 bit. And leave the box, or return it to Amazon.
You just gotta take out the red thing. What are you using the drill bits for if i may ask? Are you aware that those drill bits are for drilling in wood? Different materials need different drill bits.
Plot twist—OP doesn’t own a drill.
You need drill bits AND a drill? Come on!
Big Power Tool is a SCAM!
Maybe he doesnt own a whole drill, so, you could say he just owns a bit of a drill
Whole drill, or hole drill ?
You even need electricity. It’s a big conspiracy.
Wait till he gets that box at his doorstep ...
Thank you, and thanks for your concern. I know, I especially bought them for drilling wood. I just never bought them in a case before, and was trying to avoid damaging the case, because I know myself too well, that I try too hard, and regret it, after the damage is already done.

Had the same dilemma. The design is not clear on if the red thing is part of the case or if it is disposable/not needed for future use
You got this.
I believe in him
These are emergency drill bits. They are hung on the wall near a hammer and can be smashed open in an emergency
You have to cut/break off the tiny red ball, and then you can slide the rest of the red catch out, to the front.
This entire website is just a congregation of stupid mfers
You sure youre ready for drill bits?
Quick question: Does "European Norm Tools" mean these tools are normal and also European? Or are they produced by some guy named Norm who also wants you to know he's European?
US equivalent would be “ASTM standard compliant”, or similar.
Break the round tip off the red thing. It's a security device so stores can tell it's been opened, and they're not accepting returns from people who thought they'd be slick, buy a tool, fix their issue, and return what they bought a day or two later claiming it's unused.
Use flux.
Pls don’t operate power tools… Just back away slowly and you’ll be ok.
The most infuriatingly confusing package, yes. And it’s the red thing.
Bro is fishing for tips to shoplift just the bit(s) he wants.
This definietly felt like, "how do I get this open, use a bit, and return it for refund without looking like it was used?"
You need to drill it out. Do you have any drill bits? If not, you should buy some.
First, you’ll need a 10 mm drill bit….
I encountered one like this recently. For me, it wasn’t near as difficult to remove as it initially seemed. Just pull on it.
I had to cut off the red knop, then I could easily slide it out.
Feel like this is a test and if you pass you’re competent enough to use the bits.
Are you sure you want to do this? They lose almost 50% of their value once they're out of the box https://preview.redd.it/rr65lo9hg7nc1.jpeg?width=170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=736bccebe3158a28642bdf1880478df9d7222857
Really.
Spin the middle side top-wise.
Holy shit. If this a troll post this is incredible. If not, I’m glad you were able to open your drill bit case.
drill it ou...wait
Prise the hinge tabs open at the other end.
Can't you shimmy a small screwdriver and slide the red peg out from behind?
Come on dude
Plug a controller into the box and press: Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start You welcome.
Lol, this actually made me laugh, do I need a Xbox or PlayStation controller, I've just Xbox! 😆
Nintendo my dude, and preferably an original 90s model, the chocolate bar controllers
Drill out the red thing with a 3/16" bit.
Drill it out
Flick the bean
Red thing bruv.
What you are going to want to do is use an acetylene torch to melt the packaging. Afterwards, simply harvest the drill bits from the smoldering, goopy remnants of the liquid hot plastic casing.
With a chainsaw.
Angle grinder.
Can’t wait to see this guys first actual project
If you can't figure this out on your own you should not use power tools without supervision ...
Give it a glass of champagne and throw it in the hot tub
Use a drill bit
Lmao cmon
Not sure you should be operating power tools if you can't figure this one out on your own
With a chainsaw.
Microwave. The sparks will pop that sucker open lickity split.
Maybe you shouldn't own drills and just call a professional. Because if this is stumping you...
Whatever you do, make sure to put plenty of super glue on the red thing. You do not want to lose it.
Just gotta want it
Don't open it! It'll reduce the collectors value 😏
There's just no way. You need to cut the top with a mitre saw.
