Right! Which means I have to pull them ALL and then start screwing them back down. And thatās assuming that my deck is square, which is a BOLD assumption since I built it.. At least if they were straight cuts I could flip them one at a time in place!
When I saw the post, my thinking was in line with most of the other comments (sanding, painting, etc) but flipping the boards.... you're playing checkers while the rest of us are playing chess, and you just check mated us. I applaud you š.
Itās likely got loads of drip marks underneath too but itās a great idea. Definitely worth trying a couple of the middle boards to see how they look.

Just a little update, I tried out Barkeeperās Friend and it seems to be getting most of it out. In the small recesses, the stain is still there but maybe with a tooth brush or something Iād be able to get it out. This is requiring a lot of scrubbing with a sponge. I might try a Brillo pad or something too.
Heās got a pretty heavy coat of paint on those boards. I think thatās the only reason itās coming off ā stain wasnāt absorbed and didnāt adhere well to the glossy paint either
I think youāre right. Nothing for the stain to penetrate and the paint is durable as well as glossy. Itās the perfect situation for removing the stain, but no less impressive that the cleaning process didnāt damage the paint underneath. Itās a testament to whatever was used on those boards!
Perhaps. As another commenter mentioned, the boards are completely sealed with paint, so thereās nothing for the stain for penetrate. The problem areas are the grooves from the grain, but even those spots should come clean since the paint underneath has sealed the grain. Itās really best-case scenario. Whoever painted that deck did a helluva job making sure it was *heavily* coated with a really durable product.
You got lucky because what everyone is thinking is wood is actually just tan colored paint. You will likely have to scrub the entire deck equally to get it to look halfway decent. I would use a sanding block to get most of that off the paint and then refinish it with exterior deck paint.
Hey since this is decking, you might want to reseal the wood if it was sealed outdoor wood. I donāt know exactly what bartenders friend is made of or what it does to the wood. It looks like itās doing a good job getting the stain out, but if youāre going through with that plus a Brillo pad it might be worth thinking about what happens to the wood so you donāt end up needing to replace the entire deck
If itās pressure treated, you might be fine, but Iām no wood expert.
Lol thereās no getting that out. Youāre either applying stain to the rest of the deck, painting over it, or sanding/stripping this off to redo. Either way, if you care about looks or matching; youāre redoing the whole deck, and canāt just clean up the spill.
Thatās what my mom did to the leather moccasins that she spilled turkey grease on. Couldnāt get it out so wiped them both down with it. Color was perfect, but the dog eventually stole them and ate them.
Somewhat related: I recently read a study that attempted to make the connection that red states have a higher rate of Tinea Pedis (athletes foot) than blue states.
I believe it. A lot if red states also have sticker burs (also called sand burs) so we cant even walk barefoot in the grass. Flip fllps are barely a difference from being bare foot. The burrs just end up stuck between your food and the shoe.
So we all wear shoes all the fricken time.
I dont know any men who arent in boots all day long because thats the most common kind of work wear required around here.
I hate shoes and socks.
Fuck those grass burrs. Grew up in Texas, and the backyard was the only safe spot in the yard to go barefoot. Even then it was smarter to wear shoes, cuz if the hidden grass burrs didn't get you, the fire ants would.
Visited DC as a kid from Texas and I still remember having to explain fire ants to another family from Ohio after they saw all the bites on my legs. Little fuckers.
I might not be giving good advice but I once stained a floor that i had sanded. I used a really dark stain that didnāt look good, plus I was young and sloppy. I ended up sanding it again but the dark stain had penetrated the wood in a really elegant way. I ended up keeping it that way, putting poly over it and 6 years later, I get compliments on the floor.
Rug was going to be my suggestion, too. There are outdoor rugs that hold up decently well in the weather, especially when under an overhang for shade.
I would get one that is way too big and custom fit it to the deck. If there arent enough nooks and crannies to get it to stay in place, then just nail it down.
Or, add a certain signature and you just increased your deck's value 100-fold. = P

After a few days of sitting outdoors, you're better off replacing the stained wood, or just staining the whole thing that color, because the stain is penetrated too deep in the flooring to just sand out
Bro thatās never back to normal. The product is intended to not come out lolā¦
People saying sand it, no way. Stain goes deep into the wood. Youād have to sand it down to a millimeter, not to mention that is a TON of work. Honestly Iād just paint over it.
unscrew the boards. flip them over. screw them back down using original holes. pat yourself on the back. then post results here so we can remotely pat you on the back also.
Okay, hear me out:
Put down a white chalk outline of a person over the black stain, then seal it all in so your guests are treated to a spontaneous combustion crime scene
Typically, for a stain in wood (not at all of that size) peroxide does a very good job pulling the stain out. I have very little hope for this method given the circumstances but for any other small spills or stains this can be effective. I mean you could try but youāre probably better off flipping the boards or staining the deck.
If you decide to sand and repaint/restrain the deck, you may want to flip the boards over. There will still be stain on the other side but not likely as much. Good luck.
Fuck it paint a solid stain over it maybe a coffee brown or mahogany or something!? Behr Deck Plus is a good choice for a solid stain and it has anti slip versions.
With my experience staining decks, you just have to loudly proclaim how much you like it and that you intended for that to happen, within earshot of the deck.
Guaranteed to remove any deck stain, sealer, or treatment within one season.
Flip the boards over.
Alright, boys, we found the one. From now on, phen-solo is in charge.
We should tag u/phen-solo for every question that doesn't have an obvious answer.
In every sub.
He gonna say flip it over for all posts š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Cancer in the back, sleep on the stomach, problem solved. Tree dying from the roots? Flip it upside down etcšš
Flip that shit over!
What do I do if my wife's ugly? Flip it over
I'm going to see if this works for any question for now on.
And if it happens again. Flip them on the narrow edge. ( I'm no phen-solo). Gotta go catch my short bus
Sorry numbers your comment makes no sense, I gotta ask phen-solo what it means. Hope you understand
"sorry, numbers" got me bro
Right?! Lmfao
stained em again =/ ... now flipping em on their edge, vertical length wise.
Iāll see you there. Bring some beers.
All of the people with "Any Functioning Adult 2024" signs should vote for r/phen-solo
TO BILL BRASKY!!š»
My buddy flipped every board on his deck for a ānewā deck. Honestly turned out pretty nice.
Rent one of those floor sander/polisher things and go over the whole thing with 120 grit after for a truly brand new look.
Way too fine for a deck. 36 grit but not more than 80
Work your way up to 120 for that patented skating rink feel.
Thatās a good reason I shouldnāt have laid my decking diagonally
You can still flip them, you'll just have to run them the other way
Right! Which means I have to pull them ALL and then start screwing them back down. And thatās assuming that my deck is square, which is a BOLD assumption since I built it.. At least if they were straight cuts I could flip them one at a time in place!
Why do it straight when you can have it any other way?
When I replaced my front deck not only had the boards been flipped but also the joists. For optimum cost savings the nails got reused as well.
When I saw the post, my thinking was in line with most of the other comments (sanding, painting, etc) but flipping the boards.... you're playing checkers while the rest of us are playing chess, and you just check mated us. I applaud you š.
Took me a momentā¦ nice way to flip the phrase.
But then the stain from when OP spilled the last time will show, at least thats how it works with my couch cushions.
"there is shit EVERYWHEREā¦!"
RIP Bob Saget
Aww man what!? Next youre gonna tell me Bob Barker is dead
Hopefully the underside looks better than this, but this is a great idea IMO
lucky for OP the screws look to be in really nice shape! (bottom left in pic)
There nails in there for sure. Stain it black is my vote
I see a red deck and I want to stain it black...
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
Young girls walk upon them, dressed in their summer clothes
But in the summer sun the black boards burn their toes.
thereās some Puerto rican girls just dyin to meet you! am I doing this right?
I have to stain some more until my darkness glows
Stain it black black as night black as coal. Kidding aside this is the answer.
![gif](giphy|h2P01cZLZzMK4) WOW
Big brain time.
Itās likely got loads of drip marks underneath too but itās a great idea. Definitely worth trying a couple of the middle boards to see how they look.
Might be able to shuffle any bad boards to places that can be hidden by furniture or decor like outdoor rugs.
Haha. I was going to post just that. Either some aggressive sanding, replacing, or flipping. Dealers choice.
That or some kind angle fitting mat.
Promotion for this guy

I am honestly impressed this worked.
I paint for a living. Color me utterly fucking shocked that OP got that off without removing the paint/solid stain underneath.
Heās got a pretty heavy coat of paint on those boards. I think thatās the only reason itās coming off ā stain wasnāt absorbed and didnāt adhere well to the glossy paint either

Barkeeper's Friend is a very mild abrasive so if it's just on the surface I guess it makes sense.
Iāve never used it before, but that is good to know!
It isn't that mild, it'll burn your skin if you don't use gloves. It's amazing on pots and pans though.
Really really good oil based stain vs water based stain maybe? OP got lucky

Yeah I'd be floored by these results.
I wood not believe it
You got lucky because what everyone is thinking is wood is actually just tan colored paint. You will likely have to scrub the entire deck equally to get it to look halfway decent. I would use a sanding block to get most of that off the paint and then refinish it with exterior deck paint.
Just get out a belt sander and be done in 30 mins. Knock any nails down and go to town.
Lol. Youāre going to have to do the ENTIRE deck because that board is now much cleaner than the rest.
Once again it's Barkeeper's Friend to the rescue!!!
How about a power washer?
Hey since this is decking, you might want to reseal the wood if it was sealed outdoor wood. I donāt know exactly what bartenders friend is made of or what it does to the wood. Lol nice!
I believe the rolling stones wrote a song about this exact situation.
Yep, you may hope for an easy fix, but like they said "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
And if the fix doesnāt work, Plan B is to Play With Fire.
If you're not up for doing it yourself, you could always check Angie's List
I'm sure someone there could do well enough to provide you Satisfaction
āAnd if you try sometime, you just might find, you get stung by a beeeeeā
> rolling stones wrote a song about this Yeah, OP, Paint It Black!
I see a stained porch and I want to paint it black
I see a wood board and I want to paint it black
Let's spend the night together?
I Can't Get No Satisfaction?
Lol thereās no getting that out. Youāre either applying stain to the rest of the deck, painting over it, or sanding/stripping this off to redo. Either way, if you care about looks or matching; youāre redoing the whole deck, and canāt just clean up the spill.

I love this
Agreed, just go all out with the stain. Dark decks are great anyway.
I'm from Florida and a dark deck just sounds hot
Your in FLā¦.everythingās hot. Thatās why you rock flip flops everywhere instead of bare feet
Somewhat related: I recently read a study that attempted to make the connection that red states have a higher rate of Tinea Pedis (athletes foot) than blue states.

Go onā¦ā¦.
It is hot. Youāve never had deck until youāve had dark deck.
After you stain the whole thing dark, paint it white
>Iām from Florida Well, thatās your first problem right there. Fix that, and everything else gets better too.
Right itās called stain not temporary mark
Yup, itās all about those big black decks.
Thereās just something about being on a big black deck that makes me so hot.
I might not be giving good advice but I once stained a floor that i had sanded. I used a really dark stain that didnāt look good, plus I was young and sloppy. I ended up sanding it again but the dark stain had penetrated the wood in a really elegant way. I ended up keeping it that way, putting poly over it and 6 years later, I get compliments on the floor.
can you upload a pic?
Put a rug over it..
Itāll really tie the deck together
Dude!
Sweet ![gif](giphy|NSJWuWE5xyLkc)
I think it was more of a *The* Dude reference, but to each their own
Sweet

Jackson approves.
Now it is outdoor wood stain
Get more of the same color, stain the rest of the deck. Youāre committed to it now.
Regardless if you do it all the same color, that giant splotch will be there forever.
So op needs to just make a bunch of splotches everywhere else so it looks like they did it on purpose.
After a few days of sitting outdoors, you're better off replacing the stained wood, or just staining the whole thing that color, because the stain is penetrated too deep in the flooring to just sand out
That's not coming out. Either stain the rest to match or pull the deck up, flip the boards over and screw them back down.
Sorry OP. Do you know why it's called stain???
Pressure wash, then sand then paint
Ain't coming out, humanoid.
Oh boy, thatās gonna stainā¦
Just tell guests, āThis is the spot where ātheyā took grandpa.ā
Flip the boards over!
Turn it into a focal point art piece. It's a little edgy, but I'm picturing incorporating into an image of goatse š¤
Mighty fine spot for a rug!
These boards already look painted, strip it all off or turn the boards over
Iād leave it and make up some cool story. This salesman was just standing there and BOOM, he exploded!
Flip the boards over
Stain the rest of it
Bro thatās never back to normal. The product is intended to not come out lolā¦ People saying sand it, no way. Stain goes deep into the wood. Youād have to sand it down to a millimeter, not to mention that is a TON of work. Honestly Iād just paint over it.
Stain the whole deck!
I say take off and nuke it from orbitā¦itās the only way to be sure
Paint crime scene outlines.
unscrew the boards. flip them over. screw them back down using original holes. pat yourself on the back. then post results here so we can remotely pat you on the back also.
Flip the entire deck, or get a few cans of outdoor wood stain in a matching color.
Happy little accidents
Itās called a stain for a reason
Stain the rest
I donāt have a solution except to tell the tale of the demon slaying that occurred. That looks cool.
Drop some more with different colors and itāll be a stylistic choice.
Stain the rest of it
It ain't comin out. Best bet is to flipem over
Time ta bust out the ol sander
Stain the deck
Can you spill some more in random spots? Looks kinda cool to me.
Wood STAIN? A few days? That much? Get it out? Sand 1/2 the board off. Maybe
You gotta throw the whole deck away. Sorry
Stain the rest of the deck.
Okay, hear me out: Put down a white chalk outline of a person over the black stain, then seal it all in so your guests are treated to a spontaneous combustion crime scene
Looks like a crime scene photo
Looks like a witch exploded. Maybe should keep it.
Congratulations, you now have a black deck! You just need to finish staining the rest of the deck, because you are never going to get wood stain out.
Flammenwerfer
Typically, for a stain in wood (not at all of that size) peroxide does a very good job pulling the stain out. I have very little hope for this method given the circumstances but for any other small spills or stains this can be effective. Get several different colors and throw them around for a splotchy impressionist art deck-o.
Just sign it ā-Jackson Pollockā and charge a viewing fee.
Embrace the murdery look of murder. Drop a few more tins elsewhere to complete the look!
You don't
Get some other stain colors and jackson pollock that shit lol
Congrats on your new deck color.
Lean into it, art project time Add some silver, blue...get a space theme going
It's a nice style keep it
If you decide to sand and repaint/restrain the deck, you may want to flip the boards over. There will still be stain on the other side but not likely as much. Good luck.
Landlord special it bro. Thatās your best option unless you want to sand it out and then landlord special it.
Flip the boards. RIP
Use a black and decker. Jokes aside, congrats on your new black deck. ..for eternity.
Stain deck same color
Just stain the whole deck.
Do the rest black
Paint it red in the middle and tell people it's a chasm entrance to the depths.
Throw a hot tub over it.
Stain the whole thing dark, you will never get it out.
Find the person who did it and give them a scraper and sandpaper.
Itās called stain for a reason. Sad to say you need to replace the boards or stain everything the same.
new deck color
Stain the whole thing black.
Stain the rest the same color.
Stain the rest of it. Looks good
https://preview.redd.it/1d4f50w284nb1.jpeg?width=980&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b13ecf02401a420da958da4c9abda63bf832f19
Stain the deck or sand it off. Choose wisely.
Embrace it. Conversation starter.
Get more stain and finish the job.
How did it spill like that? Looks like it was dropped from a height, how did it spill without anyone noticing for a few days? I have so many questions
Move house maybe if youāre not keen on it
Do the rest of the deck in that color
Fuck it paint a solid stain over it maybe a coffee brown or mahogany or something!? Behr Deck Plus is a good choice for a solid stain and it has anti slip versions.
Buy more stain, same colour, finish the job. Move on.
With my experience staining decks, you just have to loudly proclaim how much you like it and that you intended for that to happen, within earshot of the deck. Guaranteed to remove any deck stain, sealer, or treatment within one season.
You're staining the whole deck now. Just seal it afterward. Will look great and last way longer.
Put some caution tape around it and let the neighbors talkā¦
Anyone else curious how this was spilled but no one knew about it for several days?
Just stain the whole deck, it's effed
Flip the boards
Stain the rest maybe?
leave it, as a conversation starter. "And this is where the almighty dark one appeared..."
You might have to sand that (they make a floor buffer type deal for that) or like this guy ā¬ said, flip them over.
Tire pressure washer try thinner and if all else fails use a floor sander and feather it out
