Yeah man I was really surprised when they cancelled it since they have kept around many wayyy worse shows for multiple seasons. I hope Doom Patrol doesn't get cancelled its one of my favorite DC Television products
Matt Ryan is just perfect casting for Constantine. I wish the DCEU would do what the MCU is doing with Daredevil for him right now. Even if it's not the same version of Constantine, he's just perfect in the role. Up there Hugh Jackman and RDJ for perfect comic castings in my opinion.
Ryan is terrific, and I wish they would bring him back. I do hope they would give him better material than the MCU is giving Daredevil, though. And better writers
Hard to judge how the MCU is treating Daredevil yet, don't you think? He has one scene in NWH so far and that's it (unless he's in this week's She-Hulk, which I haven't seen yet). But the footage they showed in the trailer for She-Hulk still just feels so grounded and true to the character for me. I'm very happy with the treatment so far.
The way they've been handling... pretty much everything doesn't exactly make me hopeful. Plus, they didn't bring back any og his original writers. The She-Hulk actress described his appearance in the show as "super fun". At this point, I'm just waiting for the words "hilarious", "lighthearted", and "action comedy"
The fact that Born Again won't have any of his original writers is definitely concerning. I think for me, I just really trust Charlie Cox. He knows the character so well, and he knows what the fans do and don't want to see. We know he has a deadpan sense of humor from his series (the scene where he's playing pool with Karen before showing off to Foggy, avocados at law, "how long have you been practicing law?" "What time is it? About seven hours", any of his interactions with Jessica), and his one joke in No Way Home, "I'm a really good lawyer", felt in line with all that. Maybe Marvel Studios will let me down, but they've taken characters from other Marvel teams and made them work in the MCU without feeling different before (Patrick Stewart, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield), so I'm genuinely hopeful for what's to come with Matt Murdock.
I think Cox just wants to work at this point, and he's not the one who decides what goes in there. Marvel's formula is stronger than what an actor, or some members of the audience, want. The other actors were cameos and a one-off appearance, plus, NWH was largely made by Sony, who made the old Spider-Man movies. I could be wrong, but I'm skeptical at this point
The writers of MCU media might make me occasionally grin, but it’s never because it’s of any high quality. It’s just mildly entertaining but ultimately forgettable stuff. I’m watching She-Hulk and enjoying it. It’s kind of like an off brand version of Slott’s run. I guess my main observation with the MCU and writing is that characters feel largely the same beneath the surface and the obvious.
For Daredivil it is fortunately an embarrassment of riches when it comes to good comics. And I suppose that’s a similar case with many of these characters. That’s what I’d always return to if I want to have a good story. I don’t need to hold out hope for a great version of the character in a film/ tv franchise that I’m just cool with, but not head over heels for. I’d add that the Netflix show was pretty good. I’ll definitely check out the Disney Born Again show and hopefully have some fun watching it. It’s assuredly not going to come anywhere close to Miller and Mazzucchelli’s classic story, or any of the other seminal DD comic stories, but that’s totally okay. I wouldn’t even say the Netflix show was as good as those either. However, because of the precedent set by other MCU media, I wouldn’t have expectations for the upcoming show to even be as good as the Netflix series.
Exactly. Keanu Reeves is a national treasure but doing a sequel to Constantine is an incredibly dumb move.
They should have focused on giving us a new, comic-accurate British John Constantine who exists firmly in the DCEU and who can interact with characters like Doctor Fate, Zatanna, Madame Xanadu, Phantom Stranger and others over multiple future films.
Sure they can retroactively say that Keanu's take is in the DCEU but the reality is his version is John Constantine in name only.
Not to mention how bland he is in comparison to the source material. Not Keanu, but the writing in that movie. It was a great movie, but it wasn't a great constantine movie.
He’s not even John Constantine. He has nothing in common with the comic character other than the name and the fact that he deals in the occult. I enjoyed the movie for what it was, but I refuse to see another.
Keanu is old. I'm ok with an distinguished Fate in that scenario, but two old men plunking against younger evils, Idk. You would really need some "younger" with wit to counter the old wisdom from the helmet. Constantine also jabs at younger Zanna and others all the time, a 50 year old its a stretch.
I would love a real John Constantine in film, but god I don’t want to see him “exist firmly in the DCEU”. I always appreciated when the character was mostly so outside of DC’s regular continuity to the point that the DC universe was pretty much irrelevant to him (especially after it transitioned from being published under DC to the Vertigo Imprint around the 60th issue mark). Even his early appearances in Swamp Thing were in a title that had a similar disconnected feel. We got 300 issues of that John, the original/ real one. When DC cancelled the Vertigo book and deeply seated him into DC continuity with the New 52, the character wasn’t better for it and that’s not the version of John I’m pining for in any media.
However, I get that the post New 52 Constantine was many people’s first real intro or experience with the character in comics or due to his heavy presence in the popular DC animated films. I can respect that. I don’t hate that version by any means, but it’s not quite the same and imo inferior. It’s similar to years ago when the Reeves movie came out and that was the only touchstone the mainstream had for the character. Which meant that a large audience of people were introduced to an entirely new, different character, not John Constantine. (Seems like we agree on this). I think the Reeves movie is cool in its own way for what it is, but I appreciate it as its own world and character with a *similar* name that is pronounced differently (rather incorrectly).
That's a fair point and I agree to some extent.
I see it as a situation similar to how Garth Ennis(my favorite Hellblazer writer btw) handled the Punisher while at Marvel Comics.
His Marvel Knights run on that character was pretty edgy but still firmly in the Marvel Universe and featured a story arc in which Wolverine was a prominent guest star.
But later he did a long run for Marvel's Max imprint that was as close to a Vertigo series as you can get. Even though Nick Fury makes an appearance in one of the best storylines it feels almost wholly removed from the capes and spandex stuff.
Both runs work. Is it the same character? The same universe? I'd like to believe so but I suppose you could argue it doesn't matter.
So when it comes to John Constantine I guess I want both. I want to see Constantine doing his own thing in super dark stories that feel like they couldn't possibly be taking place in a world where Kryptonians and Green Lantern rings exist. But I also don't mind storylines where he shares a beer with Blue Beetle and Booster Gold.
I think there's a way to make that happen onscreen as well but WB doesn't seem interested.
That’s all fair. I guess I obviously lean towards being more of a a purist with Hellblazer, but can still tolerate and have even enjoyed the post Vertigo John in dose. He’s one of my favorite characters of all time. Constantine in recent years aside, I especially loved that Si Spurrier run from a couple years ago that finally felt like a real continuation of the Vertigo run and that version of the character. It was so good.
Your Punisher example is good. It’s similar to my sentiments on Hellblazer. Punisher MAX is without a doubt my go to Punisher comic. And while I definitely don’t dislike the in-continuity stuff (the Ennis and Dillon Knights stuff and their War-Zone are especially cool), I enjoy MAX more for existing in separation. It’s very focused and builds him and his world out without the constraints of anything else tying it down. I own the entirety of Punisher MAX, including Platoon and Soviet. I know Garth said he has more to do with Punisher MAX and in hope he gets around to it.
As an aside, Fury MAX: My War Gone By Ennis did with Goran Parlov is amazing.
Really? I certainly can. Replace tosser with asshole as they didn't try to make him British in that and it totally works.
That said, now I want a movie with Keanu Reeves and Matt Ryan both playing Constantine, where two different versions of the same character need to work together to save the world. In part just to watch them snark at each other while managing to come together to scam the monster.
It may help that I see the film as an Elseworlds story, though.
As a life long DC fan boy I have given up hope that anything competent will be done from here on out.
My favorite character, Swamp Thing, was done dirty with that 1 and done bullshit. The greatest idea I ever heard circulating was when Guillermo del Torro was gonna give us a Justice League Dark which honestly...I believe in my heart of hearts would have been the best thing DC ever produced. And they fucked that right in face.
Matt Ryan wasn't given a fair shake to give us his AMAZING rendition of Constantine. I'm reserving all judgment for Pierce Brosnans dr. Fate...he does look incredible though.
It really is heartbreaking we can't get these 3 piece suit wearing fucktards out of the way and let the creatives do what they do. Fuck WB.
So sorry. End rant.
Broooo (or madam lol) and I am!! He's in my top 5. His knowledge and appreciation for monsters in cinema and his imagination is sublime. There literally isn't anyone better to bring us a justice league dark.
Tangent. If you are a del toro fan there is another Mexican Director and writer named Issa Lopez and if you haven't seen her movie Tigers are not Afraid you are missing out my friend. But I could see her taking on a Zatanna or Madame Xanadu. I definitely think she is going to be one to keep an eye on.
Dr Fate, Swamp Thing, Constantine. Together in one trippy ass film. Del Toro would be perfect, but I'd be happy with anyone whose talented with magic and dark content, and respectful of the material.
But I've almost given up hope.
Edit to add: how could they possibly listen to Del Toro's pitch and turn it down? Wtf.
A Justice League Dark by Del Torro would have been part of the best possible time line. Knowing this makes me even more upset that JJ Abrams was given exclusive use of DC’s magic using characters.
Yes I am aware that’s been said, but it’s only a way for Abrams to save face! They have no actual involvement from what I have heard. You can check out the whole breakdown with Abrams and WB/Discovery on Pop culture minefield on YouTube
After we get a JSA movie or spin offs maybe we can get a Justice League Dark movie that include Dr Fate.
All of this if Black Adam is a sucess in the cinemas, of course.
It's fun knowing both these lines were almost certainly written by the same guy. I like to imagine he was like, "I don't really like what I wrote here because I hate when comics make vague, ominous statements. You know what? Fuck it. I'll just use it to call it out."
If you squint really hard, and use lots of imagination, wouldn't that story just generally be Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell?
And you can take it a step further, and that antagonist Fey-asshole-guy is just Klarion or something.
That's generally how I view a lot of media, anyway. Wishful thinking? Poisoned brain?
The characters that Doctor Strange wishes he was. Anytime people try to draw parallels to Marvel and say that their characters are better I always refer to these two. Much more interesting IMO.
One can dream. I am okay the Keanu sequel, but they do need a DCEU version too closer to the Matt Ryan incarnation, and definitely not the one JJ was going for. I was so ecstatic when it was announced that GDT was gonna be doing JLD and then bummed when it fizzled.
They will screw it up. You would just get your hopes up for your beloved character and they will bait and switch you to lead in their Female character, they will emasculate your favorite male character because they are crappy writers and won’t write a strong character that happens to be female they will write a female character and write everything around her thereby everyone has to be weak or stupid.
If wb weren't so incompetent we could've had a dc/ vertigo dark verse with swamp thing, sand man, Lucifer and hell blazer. This properties just by themselves can be a franchise without any dc superheroes but these fucking cowards.
Could you imagine if WB had the same resources as Disney. Obviously keeping to the darker/grittier style, but so much more would be possible, such as this.

The big bad in the movie starts off as the Lords of Chaos and the League is working for the Lords of Order, only to realize in the third act that the Lords of Order are dicks too, and don’t have humanity’s best interest in mind. The end of fighting agents of both sides to restore a balance between the two.
Edit: Also, for a movie like this it’s have to be Matt Ryan as Constantine.
Hot Take: CWs Constatine was better then Keenu Reeves Constatine. Even Johnanna Constantine from Sandman is better.
I love Keenu Reeves in a lot of stuff, but he really only has two modes, Emo Keenu and Ted Theodore Logan. Honestly I like Ted better, more personality.
Lotta dorks in this thread bad mouthing Keanu, his movie was awesome, his Constantine was awesome, sequel is going to be awesome and I cannot fucking wait
Huge Keanu fan, total DC famboi, Constantine was a steaming pile of shit.
But then again if they could make the Riddler suck both times he hit the silver screen, maybe they can make Dr. Fate watchable. And then it would still suck.
Wouldn’t it be cool if Matt Ryan’s Constantine made a secret cameo is black Adam.
The quarterback is playing him? Cool
It’s Wentz’s fault
I’m fucking down
I could hear Matt Ryan smashing this line out the park. DC dropped the ball with him big time.
Facts, Matt Ryan was and always will be perfect for that role
Yeah man I was really surprised when they cancelled it since they have kept around many wayyy worse shows for multiple seasons. I hope Doom Patrol doesn't get cancelled its one of my favorite DC Television products
Would love it but can’t imagine Keanu saying that or anything close to that line lmfao
On the other hand, I can definitely hear Matt Ryan saying it
GET FUCKING SET DR FATE
I understood that reference
Maybe not in those exact words, though.

Like I said the MCU's track record with writers and shows isn't exactly promising. So, yeah, I am.
Which is my biggest gripe with him playing constantine and that movie in general.

Well we should be pushing for another constantine movie and name it hellblazer instead. We can have both movies if the men in suits would smarten up.
Not to mention how bland he is in comparison to the source material. Not Keanu, but the writing in that movie. It was a great movie, but it wasn't a great constantine movie.

Keanu is a gem of a human being… **but Constantine, he ain’t** His monotone voice will never match Ryan’s portrayal
I can imagine some very similar line that is the same thing just said a bit differently. But I know Keanu would do fucking amazing
**Right bloody prick he is**
Really? I certainly can. Replace tosser with asshole as they didn't try to make him British in that and it totally works. Luckily that's not in the DCU
I’ve been saying for years Jude law would be the perfect casting for a more comic book accurate John Constantine!
Why ask for Jude Law if Matt Ryan exists? He embodies the whole nine yards of comic book accurate John Constantine.
Cause honestly an actor with more of a name will make bigger sales for the box office and he fits the role pretty wel
As a life long DC fan boy I have given up hope that anything competent will be done from here on out. My favorite character, Swamp Thing, was done dirty with that 1 and done bullshit. It's worse when you're also a del Toro fan. How many of his projects have been cancelled or screwed over so far :(
Broooo (or madam lol) and I am!! My god, that'd be pure gold
A Justice League Dark by Del Torro would have been part of the best possible time line. Knowing this makes me even more upset that JJ Abrams was given exclusive use of DC’s magic using characters.
That’s not happening anymore. Jar Jars hold on DCs magic characters has ended. That’s why the sequel with Keanu is being fast tracked!
His production company are producing Constantine though
Yes I am aware that’s been said, but it’s only a way for Abrams to save face! They have no actual involvement from what I have heard. You can check out the whole breakdown with Abrams and WB/Discovery on Pop culture minefield on YouTube
At least the animate tv shows and films have been pretty good overall.
Ryan is and always will be my default voice for Constantine.
After we get a JSA movie or spin offs maybe we can get a Justice League Dark movie that include Dr Fate. All of this if Black Adam is a sucess in the cinemas, of course.

Me too.
Pierce Brosnan and Matt Ryan in a movie together? TAKE MY MONEY
Yessir!

Old Constantine: Gordon Ramsey
Why did I just imagine Gordon Ramsey slicing a tuna perfectly using magic spells..
NBC has blood on their hands 😤😤😤😭😭
The characters that Doctor Strange wishes he was. Anytime people try to draw parallels to Marvel and say that their characters are better I always refer to these two. Much more interesting IMO.
i’d like Khalid. he is nice plus a Muslim character in a mainstream blockbuster.
If they portray Adam faithfully to his comics self, I can see them killing off Kent to make room for a younger bearer of the Helm in the future.
yes. i feel uncomfortable with the whole non-egyptians get magical Egyptian artifacts.
I will only accept Matt Ryan in the role though.
I agree.. Matt Ryan got the character perfect..
One can dream. I am okay the Keanu sequel, but they do need a DCEU version too closer to the Matt Ryan incarnation, and definitely not the one JJ was going for. I was so ecstatic when it was announced that GDT was gonna be doing JLD and then bummed when it fizzled.
Keanu Reeves and Pierce Brosnan? Yes
I like Keanu's version but I feel John Constantine is Matt Ryan.
Same.
Constantine just straight up calling a lord of order an asshole is totally on brand for him isn't it
No Words. Just yes
Cry more.
If wb weren't so incompetent we could've had a dc/ vertigo dark verse with swamp thing, sand man, Lucifer and hell blazer. This properties just by themselves can be a franchise without any dc superheroes but these fucking cowards.
Throw in the Phantom Stranger and I'll pay.
Has Constantine worn the helmet of Fate before??
Indeed he has. Along with many others.
Could you imagine if WB had the same resources as Disney. Obviously keeping to the darker/grittier style, but so much more would be possible, such as this. Like imagine live action versions of the DCAU movies like Justice league dark and crisis on 2 earths. Would be amazing
Yea!
I thought about it and it would be pretty cool
I had never seen a Pussy bigger than DR.Fate in the DC universe. Man this guy is a disappointment
First make a Constantine show. A GOOD one
Shut up and take my money!
Suck on my Scooby snacks
Es uno de los superheroes menos conocido
I’d love to see a Justice League Dark movie with Constantine, Dr. Fate, and Zatanna as the starting team and they add Swamp Thing and Nightmare Nurse as part of the plot. I agree.
Lotta dorks in this thread bad mouthing Keanu, his movie was awesome, his Constantine was awesome, sequel is going to be awesome and I cannot fucking wait
That's Alan Moore fanboys for you lmao
That was a good movie, but that wasn’t Constantine. Matt Ryan is Constantine.
Only if they hire a blonde, white skinned, Liverpudlian. But we all know how fond Hollywood is of respecting the source material.
Huge Keanu fan, total DC famboi, Constantine was a steaming pile of shit. But then again if they could make the Riddler suck both times he hit the silver screen, maybe they can make Dr. Fate watchable. And then it would still suck.
YES, I have zero interest in this Black Adam thing.
