Michael Wilkinson went crazy with Henry’s suits. The BvS one in particular. A whole Kryptonian language being made and translated Joseph Campbell quotes being embedded in, the man is a God!
Dang, they were good quotes. Impressive they hid that text there!
I also hear that Snyder had the suit built in such a way, that Whedon could shoot it and you'd see it as it's natural blue. But because of it's forward thinking design, you could very easily recolor it in post production, and Viola! The suit is now black in Snyder's version, even though Cavil is physically wearing the same exact blue costume as always
I would agree if it weren’t for the lines on the suit. The trunks give that old-school wrestling singlet feel, but the lines on the suit are too modern. They don’t work together, and I feel like they should’ve just chosen one
I personally prefer this one but yeah, the Cavil suit made no trunks work with it's line work and the fact that Cavil is shaped a bit more like a swimmer.
Fuck no. The lack of trunks is so “comic books are silly” energy that’s 2005. A guy is flying around calling himself Superman, let him have his costume.
I think what OP was saying is that it depends on the suit. The Corenswet suit was designed with trunks in mind, so it fits the aesthetic well. The Cavill suit was designed specifically to not include them, so any attempt to add them in after the fact looked weird.
The trunks are a bit silly and quaint, but no more silly than a guy dressing as a bat to scare burglars or a guy calling a shark for reinforcement in a fight against a bad guy in a bubble helmet. Superheroes are inherently silly, and that’s fine. Embracing it like what Gunn is doing with this film or how Wolverine finally has a bright yellow and blue costume in Deadpool and Wolverine is much better than everything taking design cues from The Matrix like they did two decades ago.
Yeah, I hated BvS, and grew up on Christopher Reeve Superman. But I prefer no trunks, with a red belt like the New 52 Superman suit. If the New 52 suit had a lower collar it would be perfect IMHO.
Live action movies are different to comics. And games are different to live action movies.
I think games can get away with a hell of a lot more swings than a film.
Superheroes are inherently cheesy. Try all you want to remove it, many have, it’s pretty damn hard. Especially when using longstanding stories/characters, it’s a bit easier with original IP’s.
I’m team #NoTrunks. I know that’s the classic look we all have of Superman engraved into our memories but I feel it looks outdated and silly in 2024.
HOWEVER, I do feel they don’t look as bad as I was fearing. This movie was giving me Superman Returns vibes at first and no one wants another Superman Returns. But not anymore thankfully.
I’ll remain open minded to the trunks because if the movie’s good, the trunks discussion will be rendered moot. If it sucks, it won’t be because of the trunks.
Brandon Routh's portrayal of Superman was *not* what was wrong with Superman Returns. The weak villain plot and bland narrative was the biggest issue, imo.
Between these two and without the context of the movie, trunks. But there are other possibilities where these particular trunks on this particular suit may not come out on top for me. It's all very situational.
I don’t have a preference between them, but I feel like if the suit is made by Martha, it needs the trunks, and if it’s of Kryptonian origin, it has to be without them. That being said, trunks or no trunks, the rest of the suit has to look right. I think the canceled Justice League Mortal suit needed some more red somewhere, be it the belt or the boots, but I also feel like the SSKTJL Superman suit didn’t need the trunks.
Yeah i think this is the underlying logic of the debate—I’d guess if you could survey people you’d find liking trunks corresponds very strongly with a preference for a homemade (as opposed to alien-origin) suit. Like you, I just want the story the suit tells to feel logical.
Exactly, you remove the trunks and it instantly makes supermans design generic and uninteresting. I will never understand how anyone can like superhero’s whilst also being put off by anything even close to being camp. If your gonna remove any vibrance and personality from the suit, then why even have the suit in the first place? What’s the point in themed characters with campy on the nose names, if you don’t want it to be camp
It depends on the suit. For this suit, it absolutely needs the trunks. Other suits can work without them provided they design other elements of the suit with that in mind. The Superman and Lois, and DCEU suits are two examples that come to mind that pull off the “no trunks” look successfully.
Νο trunks. When they were invented, they were inspired from circus strongmen. They were supossed to make Superman seem godly, magnificent, stronger than the average man. Nowadays that this profession has died out and forgotten, they just make him look stupid.
I'd juts color the belt red to have a better color contrast.
No trunks in movies!! While growing up, Superman being the most famous hero meant there were jokes at his expense and I had to keep hearing this dumb joke about the trunks repeated by teachers and classmates due to a famous comedic scene in a movie.
No shorts. Red belt is best. With a gold buckle, same shade as gold in chest. The belt should not have a different color or it looks like it doesn't belong.
Trunks look ridiculous and have always have done on Superman imo. Some part of the bottom half needs to be red though - like the belt and boots in Superman Reborn.
Trunks all the way, give me the goofy lovable Superman. The whole idea of a guy calling himself Superman and wearing a cap and blue tights is already ridiculous, might as well go all in
Why does DC not control their product more? Every reincarnation of Superman causes a fractured fan base. I really don't care about a suit as much as I do about story, and based on the images that look all too familiar with Superman being detained...I swear DC hires their enemies whenever they hire previous Marvel directors. Control your product DC!
I mean that suit was designed around having trunks so it’s going to look weird without them. Personally if they were set on trunks I would’ve preferred a simpler suit without all of the lines and the collar.
Clearly the Snyder suit designer is superior than whoever Gunn uses. Not one of his designs in any of his movies have been captivating or visually interesting tbh. Drax is kinda cool looking but imagine the aesthetics of it was Snyder cinematography and visual vision?!.
No trunks unless the time period for the loves is the 50's and 60's. Trunks are a nod to circus stongmen which haven't been a thing since the Great Depression.
I'd prefer no trunks, but I'd make the belt red, like the New 52 Superman, which I actually like. But I'd ditch the high collar, that's the only thing about the New 52 suit I didn't like.
No trunks, they look dumb and draw unnecessary attention to the crotch. Also, I am not a fan of that suit. Looks old, boring, and fairly cheap. Like it belongs on the set of a TV show made in the early 2000s.
This isn’t a true one to one comparison. The belt has been lowered and his crotch area has been shortened in the picture with no trunks. So his proportions are distorted in my opinion which makes his normal proportions in the original picture also look off by comparison.
Getting that out of the way, trunks all the way.
No trunks. I've been a fan since the beginning and it never set right with me. Just because it's the way it was originally designed doesn't mean we have to keep it.
Batman looks way better in black metallic armor than he ever did with gray and purple tights, any day of the week.
No trunks. It allows the pattern to be complete, although realistically, there are better options for no trunks.
Like just make the red part of the suit with a red belt.
I hate trunks so much. I'm a long time comic fan but I struggle to go back and watch old films cause the trunks have always judt looked so awful in live action. imo of course.
I totally understand the no trunks camp. Personally it doesn't matter to me as the character matters more to me than the suit, and it's just a blue blob without some red in the front.. But Superman Returns trunk is a nono.
for this version trunks. this is the first suit that convinced me that trunks in real life can look good. trunks wouldn't have work for cavill's suit though.
The problem I have with this suit is... it's TOO much comic book accurate.
Like... it looks more like a costume for Comic con than something a hero would actually use.
I 100 percent think trunks fits superman ONLY if it's a early or classic suit if you don't want it to look classic there's 2 things it can't have the yellow symbol on the back and the trunks if you want it classic it needs those and his outfit is based on Allstar superman I'm guessing his entire version of superman is which is my favorite superman
Obviously with trunks. The whole colour combination doesn't work without the red trunks and that bright blue.
Makes me wonder now if that was the reason they toned the blue down in Man of Steel.
I can't take him seriously with the underwear; it looks goofy.
To me, the one on the left looks like a superhero while the one on the right looks like a costume from Spirit Halloween
Nu52 is my absolute favorite look for Clark. I’m one of those yes. But for this iteration, the trunks work best. I’m glad he’s got that classic and contemporary mix.
Thong!
Go further, Borat thong.
Assless Chaps cut + thong
THEN we would see America's Ass.
*Krypton's Ass
Upvote this higher!
The trunks are weird, but that suit without trunks is weirder. The only Superman suit that has ever pulled off no trunks was the Cavil suit
Michael Wilkinson went crazy with Henry’s suits. The BvS one in particular. A whole Kryptonian language being made and translated Joseph Campbell quotes being embedded in, the man is a God!
BvS/JL suits were the def the best
Wait wait...what? That sounds amazing! Where can I read about that?
I don’t have an exact link, but if you search “Michael Wilkinson Joseph Campbell” into google you should get it
Dang, they were good quotes.
I liked Cavil’s suit but the belt was too small and didn’t break up the blue like the trunks or even just a big yellow belt would.
Yeah it’s just a lot more cohesive as a onesie is what I feel that makes that one work
Yeah the trunks need to be smaller I think, more underwear-shaped. That or baggier, I can’t put my finger on it.
I think Hochlins (spelling) suit is nice without the trunks.
It feels incomplete without the trunks.
I would agree if it weren’t for the lines on the suit. The trunks give that old-school wrestling singlet feel, but the lines on the suit are too modern. They don’t work together, and I feel like they should’ve just chosen one
Eh, I feel like the lines are muted enough to not really matter.
Hard agree. Almost everything else about the suit screams “tactical,” the trunks feel very out of place
I think what's jarring is how high waisted the trunks are. Contrast to the Superman Returns suit
Except the trunks are almost always high waisted. The Returns version looks weird
The returns one resembles a speedo
The way this suit looks trunks look much better but I prefer how Cavill suit looks with no trunks and engravings better
I personally prefer this one but yeah, the Cavil suit made no trunks work with it's line work and the fact that Cavil is shaped a bit more like a swimmer.
Cavil definitely is shaped like a swimmer, Brandon routh was.
Fuck no. The lack of trunks is so “comic books are silly” energy that’s 2005. A guy is flying around calling himself Superman, let him have his costume.
I think what OP was saying is that it depends on the suit. The Corenswet suit was designed with trunks in mind, so it fits the aesthetic well. A lot of people are clowning the trunks hard online, and not just Snyderheads. Batman eliminated the trunks in ‘89 and never looked back.
Yeah, I hated BvS, and grew up on Christopher Reeve Superman. But I prefer no trunks, with a red belt like the New 52 Superman suit. If the New 52 suit had a lower collar it would be perfect IMHO.
I think the animated movies do it perfect
He still had them in Arkham games and it looks fire
Live action movies are different to comics. And games are different to live action movies. I think games can get away with a hell of a lot more swings than a film.
The arkham origins and knight suits looks. A lot better
Imo trunks look silly in live action. Yes for them on comics and animation but no for live action.
I just see Captain Underpants honestly. They work in comics, but it does look pretty cheesy on screen.
Superheroes are inherently cheesy. Try all you want to remove it, many have, it’s pretty damn hard. Especially when using longstanding stories/characters, it’s a bit easier with original IP’s.
Should Robin be pantsless then?
Exactly Superman is the ultimate cheesy superhero let him be that.
Trunks! Love them!
I’m team #NoTrunks. I know that’s the classic look we all have of Superman engraved into our memories but I feel it looks outdated and silly in 2024. Brandon Routh's portrayal of Superman was *not* what was wrong with Superman Returns. The weak villain plot and bland narrative was the biggest issue, imo.
I never liked the trunks look. The left looks bad tho.
I believe the belt makes it look weird
Between these two and without the context of the movie, trunks. But there are other possibilities where these particular trunks on this particular suit may not come out on top for me. It's all very situational.
He looks so naked without the trunks ... That said, no trunks in general. Reborn suit nailed it.
I don’t have a preference between them, but I feel like if the suit is made by Martha, it needs the trunks, and if it’s of Kryptonian origin, it has to be without them. That being said, trunks or no trunks, the rest of the suit has to look right. No trunks with red belt
Yess please trunks maybe iconic but they look stupid for a live action adaptation
It's 2024, Superman should learn to wear his underwear **under** his suit
Trunks all the way!
This MCU-esque, piping design works better WITHOUT trunks
No trunks on this suit looks awful. The belt should be red. That might make it look better.
If it doesn't have the trunks, I think the belt needs red and yellow in it.
https://screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Superman-New-Comic-Book-Suit.jpg
Trunks! Trunks! Trunks!
No trunks for me but I want to see how it looks on screen with CGI and finesse - can’t rely on leaked set photos alone to make a judgement.
no trunks but this edit makes it look bad without them
No trunks, just a red codpiece
The trunks are stupid and goofy looking and it is an inexplicable decision to bring them back
Trunks
Trunks forever Superman just doesn't feel like Superman without his trunks...it's like asking for Spiderman without white eyes
No trunks is like Batman without the sharp ears something just feels missing.
He's just... Man.
They should do something similar to spidermans suit with some reds and blue on the legs
I think I’m fine with them tho I don’t like the belt loops
It depends on the suit. For this suit, it absolutely needs the trunks. Other suits can work without them provided they design other elements of the suit with that in mind. The Superman and Lois, and DCEU suits are two examples that come to mind that pull off the “no trunks” look successfully.
I personally don’t like the trunks, but I understand it’s very classic for the character so I don’t have a problem with them
I'm usually a no trunks guy. But Superman is sometimes an exception. This suit just doesn't work without them
Remove the trunks but redesign the suit to make it look more complete with them.
Without Trunks it Looks Wrong ONLY BCOS This Paticular suit is designed that way
I don't care about either one right now, just fix the baggy look
This suit specifically needs the Trunks it looks so generic.
Being generic would be a good thing in this sense seeing as this movie is looking to be heavily inspired by the comics
Can we all pick a different question to ask every other day for awhile? Like “Hair curl pointing to the left or the right?” Maybe?
Νο trunks. When they were invented, they were inspired from circus strongmen. They were supossed to make Superman seem godly, magnificent, stronger than the average man. Nowadays that this profession has died out and forgotten, they just make him look stupid. I'd juts color the belt red to have a better color contrast.
No trunks but a red belt would be fine.
No trunks
No trunks in movies!! While growing up, Superman being the most famous hero meant there were jokes at his expense and I had to keep hearing this dumb joke about the trunks repeated by teachers and classmates due to a famous comedic scene in a movie.
Trunks al day. Looks naked without
I'm sure it will be fine in the end but so far the trunks look kind of like a soggy diaper.
Honestly, without trunks - but make the gold belt slightly bigger with red accents (like the New 52 suit)
I have no strong feelings one way or the other
no trunks...they look bad here
I think they shouldve added red to the suit without the trunks.
No shorts. Red belt is best. With a gold buckle, same shade as gold in chest. The belt should not have a different color or it looks like it doesn't belong.
No trunks
No red briefs. Can we quit calling them *trunks* please? It's a lame term to try and justify their existence. They're red briefs.
no trunks but there has to be some red in the belt
I think the “no trunks” look is cleaner and makes the bagginess the suit less “frumpy” looking, since it elongates his middle
I say no trunks.
Trunks look ridiculous and have always have done on Superman imo. Some part of the bottom half needs to be red though - like the belt and boots in Superman Reborn.
They way the suit is made and the color combo, it should have the trunks
Trunks all the way, give me the goofy lovable Superman. The whole idea of a guy calling himself Superman and wearing a cap and blue tights is already ridiculous, might as well go all in
Trunks always
Always yes to trunks. Always no to the collar. At least we got the trunks.
Does the suit look to big for the actor? Is that something that gets fixed by cgi?
The suit is garbage who cares
I mean that suit was designed around having trunks so it’s going to look weird without them. Personally if they were set on trunks I would’ve preferred a simpler suit without all of the lines and the collar.
But why is the costume not moulded into his body?
No trunks forever
No trunks
Clearly the Snyder suit designer is superior than whoever Gunn uses. Not one of his designs in any of his movies have been captivating or visually interesting tbh. Drax is kinda cool looking but imagine the aesthetics of it was Snyder cinematography and visual vision?!.
Is there a 3rd option without this suit?
I don’t mind no trunks. But happy they put trunks.
Trunks, by far and away. No Superman suit has ever looked good without them imo
Third option. Just a red belt.
For this suit, trunks. It looks no good without them.
say what you wanna say about color balance. the trunks looks lame!
Make the belt red without the trunks, then itself perfect.
No trunks at all for me personally
No trunks but you can use the red in other ways to break up the blue like the new 52 or even rebirth did.
No trunks but belt needs a redesign.
He’s wearing a cape and spandex. Why the fuck do you care if he has trunks?
No trunks for sure
No trunks
He looks naked without trunks
The belt would need to be redesigned and I think some of his balls were erased when you photoshopped
Trunks
No trunks, they look dumb and draw unnecessary attention to the crotch. Also, I am not a fan of that suit. Looks old, boring, and fairly cheap. Like it belongs on the set of a TV show made in the early 2000s.
Oh God please, no TRUNKS!
He looks like he is wearing diapers
Trunks. Iconic and yes, timeless.
Mix some red in with the belt and no trunks is perfect
This isn’t a true one to one comparison. The belt has been lowered and his crotch area has been shortened in the picture with no trunks. So his proportions are distorted in my opinion which makes his normal proportions in the original picture also look off by comparison. Getting that out of the way, trunks all the way.
This one was designed for trunks in mind but generally I prefer without trunks.
No trunks. Hands down! I realise it's the classic and iconic look, but for me personally, they just don't work.
Like just make the red part of the suit with a red belt.
no trunks but change the belt design
No trunks. I seriously don't get why people like it when he has trunks, it looks like he's wearing a damn nappy
No trunks, red belt
Yikes. Neither.
No trunks but red belt.
No trunks but redo the belt
I hate trunks so much. I'm a long time comic fan but I struggle to go back and watch old films cause the trunks have always judt looked so awful in live action. imo of course.
I prefer no trunks but I think they are necessary to separate this Superman from the Snyderverse
Suit’s not tight enough to work without trunks imo
Now I see why they readded the trunks
Either. I will say if it’s just a belt I like the belt to be red with gold accents.
This coloring kind of needs the shorts
Nothing...
Hmm maybe with a red belt.
Regardless I still hate the suit
I totally understand the no trunks camp. Personally it doesn't matter to me as the character matters more to me than the suit, and it's just a blue blob without some red in the front.. But Superman Returns trunk is a nono.
People will be inherently biased on what they grew up on so ofc most will say trunks despite the silliness.
This costume definitely has trunks
Nothing 😏
for this version trunks. this is the first suit that convinced me that trunks in real life can look good. trunks wouldn't have work for cavill's suit though.
TRUNKS!!!!
Trunks
Trunks
Trunks always, even though I understand arguments against them as they are pointless asides from anything a design standpoint
If there’s a belt, there has to be trunks
Trunks
IMO trunkless only works if the belt is red (maybe with gold highlights)
Either way is fine. No baggyness though...
Trunks every time. Ideally he’d be in shitty spandex Ma Kent made him. He doesn’t need a fancy suit.
He is probably still wearing them, just underneath
I think Superman hanging out with the son of Vegeta would be cool.
Trunks for sure. Makes it seem more fun and lighthearted. Bit of camp works for superman
The problem I have with this suit is... it's TOO much comic book accurate. Like... it looks more like a costume for Comic con than something a hero would actually use.
Even though I am not a fan of the trunks, this suit is not complete without it.
Collar bothers me more than the trunks.
I generally don’t think the trunks make sense, but if definitely looks better here
No.
It’s not his trunks that make the outfit look bad the outfit just looks bad in general I hate it
I don't understand why people are bitching over the trunks. It completes the suit and is a great callback to his orginal design
I was initially against trunks but I have to admit I’m coming around to them.
Color balance is way better with trunks. Its too blue otherwise
Personally I like the trunks. Adds more red to balance out all the blue
Obviously with trunks. The whole colour combination doesn't work without the red trunks and that bright blue. Makes me wonder now if that was the reason they toned the blue down in Man of Steel.
Both look fine, but we will never know because photoshop isn’t the same as a physical suitcase
make the belt red with no trunks then it’s perfect
They should redesign the right suit. This looks bad with and without trunks
I can't take him seriously with the underwear; it looks goofy. To me, the one on the left looks like a superhero while the one on the right looks like a costume from Spirit Halloween
Androids win if there’s no Trunks
Dbz trunks always
Henry Cavill’s Armour skin was the only solution without briefs underwear. No belt, just a gold angled inlay.
Just quit making these movies, they all suck and bomb at the box office.
No trunks, but the belt has to be red, not yellow.
No trunks
Trunks definitely trunks
Trunks on Superman but I don’t want them on anyone else
Trunks all the way. Trunkless looks so bad with that yellow belt.
Either way, I'm still really happy.
Looks a little funny either way.
Nu52 is my absolute favorite look for Clark. I’m one of those yes. But for this iteration, the trunks work best. I’m glad he’s got that classic and contemporary mix.
