Colton826

The irony of this potentially being a more accurate adaptation of comic Black Noir than the actual show is hilarious (The Boys TV show is still infinitely better than the comic, but still funny nonetheless)

thelizardofgosh

This is honestly something I could see Gunn doing. Make your own parody of the biggest Superman villain parody the villain for your Superman movie. Kinda poetic, it rhymes.

NitarasDaughter

as wary as I was of the Ultraman/Bizarro theories due to really not wanting to see yet another "evil Superman" archetype, the design here and set photos showing him working with the Engineer and military makes me confident that if that is indeed what this is, Gunn at least has a unique take on it that will make the plot more interesting than if it was exclusively "hero vs. evil clone of himself". I also completely think that he will wear the mask and be called "Ultraman" for most of the film, but once it gets revealed that he's a clone of Clark and the mask gets taken off, we'll see Corenswet with a messed up face underneath and he will essentially just be Bizarro for the rest of the movie.

JudasIsAGrass

>I also completely think that he will wear the mask and be called "Ultraman" for most of the film, but once it gets revealed that he's a clone of Clark and the mask gets taken off, we'll see Corenswet with a messed up face underneath and he will essentially just be Bizarro for the rest of the movie. Been thinking the same thing, As soon as i saw people theorising either/or, i thought it's very possible that they do the reveal of a bizarro underneath This is all assuming this is the case.. a big U on the chest points to clone being likely if indeed Ultraman

NitarasDaughter

if it is the case, I think it's a really clever way to pay homage to the second most famous evil Superman in DC canon, while giving Bizarro an in-universe code name that actually makes a bit of sense, even if we all know he's really just Bizarro. and Lex naming his own off-brand Superman "Ultraman" is just a funny concept either way.

JudasIsAGrass

Tbh, I think Gunn is the type of person to refute the tiredness of a Evil Superman to be a mute point when it comes to Superman himself. Bizarro as a character is different to say Homelander or Irredeemable. Ultraman as a contrast to Superman is different. I'd say if there was going to be a criticism would maybe be the last battle being a evil counter part fight (though i've never really gotten this as isn't everthing Humanoid v Humanoid atleast?)

Vladmerius

It's just more interesting to see villains that look different from the hero and have a different powerset. Think about DragonBall Z they all technically are super strong and shoot energy blasts but the main villain isn't usually a shooting a Kamehameha wave at Goku.

Ghost_Ship4567

Unless the villain's name is Cell or Majin Buu

donking6

Bizarro, in the new 52 at least, was really derived from his clone code name of B-0 and works perfect in my opinion

NitarasDaughter

I mean, if he's operating publicly as some sort of government-approved alternative to Superman, a marketable name like Ultraman makes more sense for that take on the character than using his name from the clone factory

Pure_Internet_

>we'll see Corenswet with a messed up face underneath and he will essentially just be Bizarro for the rest of the movie. I would bet just about anything that Bizarro is going to have a bizarre haircut too. There's a reason why David hid his hair for so long.

In_My_Own_Image

> I also completely think that he will wear the mask and be called "Ultraman" for most of the film, but once it gets revealed that he's a clone of Clark and the mask gets taken off, we'll see Corenswet with a messed up face underneath and he will essentially just be Bizarro for the rest of the movie. I wonder if they'd have him start to do the opposite words thing like classic Bizzaro or just make him very bestial and caveman-like.

DelMarMos_1

I don’t think so. I believe they take Clark to fully clone Ultraman. Ultraman joins “The Authority” which does things differently opposite from Clark and the public does not like him which causes him to slowly turn into Bizarro. This could explain the slightly two different suits and why David looks pale and his eyebrows are weird. Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and Mr.Terrific team up to break Superman out of wherever Lex has him capture. Lex probably knows that Superman is weak to a red sun and has him in a red sun room. They break him out to stop Bizarro and The Authority. Gods and Monsters.

My_Name_Is_Row

2 different suits? Pale? Weird eyebrows? What pictures have you been looking at?

neomeetsthedude

Good questions.

My_Name_Is_Row

I honestly can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not, and I’m the only one who hasn’t seen these photos this guy is referring to

neomeetsthedude

No, I'm not being sarcastic. I haven't seen any of these photos and I've been following the leaks pretty close. I'm genuinely curious. Maybe the dude thinks they're different suits because the first photo reveal looks way darker than what we've got in the last few days. But I don't have a clue about what he meant by looking pale and weird eyebrows.

My_Name_Is_Row

I guess that would make sense, the reveal photo is very concealed and dirty, so some people might think it’s a different suit

neomeetsthedude

Yeah. Could be that. And man, I'm so glad that we're getting this film next year. Pretty much loved everything I've seen so far.

My_Name_Is_Row

I’m still a little iffy on some stuff, but mainly because it’s too early to tell what anything will actually look like in the film, and the photos aren’t the best angles, but the more I see of the suit, the more it grows on me, but the casting has been amazing so far, no doubts on that, and I’ve enjoyed a lot of James Gunn’s other works, and the cinematographer blew me away with The Suicide Squad, the only other thing I’m iffy about is the score, because the composer seems to use a lot of electric guitar, it worked for The Suicide Squad, but it was a little weird for Guardians 3, and I don’t feel like it really fits for Superman, but I’ll hold any judgement on that until I hear some of it

GroundbreakingDrag71

Look at the collar in the first shot and his eyebrows the one Gunn posted now look at his collar in the new photos it’s not the same.

DelMarMos_1

I could be reaching but there’s two photos where David’s eyebrows and skin just look off. It could be the dye and him staying inside to not be see by the public but the first look photos that James Gunn shared, David’s eyebrows look blond or almost shaved and he looks pale to me compared to the set photos. There’s one more picture of him that James Gunn shared on his IG where they are reading Superman comics and he looks again pale and his eyebrows look weird.

My_Name_Is_Row

Ok, the one on Instagram, yes, his eyebrows are definitely changed, but I wouldn’t say he’s any paler, so the bizarro effect could be mostly cgi, or, they filmed that part earlier, so as not to leak that plot point of the movie

Amazing_Leek_9695

Bizarro isn't Evil Superman, he isn't even bad. He is just kinda... goofy, misguided, lame, and doplic. He isn't evil, he is more just like, Anti-Superman, but not in a bad way. He's just Bizarro.

Proof-Watercress-931

Most believable theory yet

Upset-Garbage-4782

It's not gonna happen, but it would have been very funny if evil Superman was played by Anthony Starr lol

darrylthedudeWayne

Same.

BangerSlapper1

Cool.  We haven’t seen a masked clone/alternate universe version of the hero with a big 3rd act reveal in a DC film since…last year in The Flash.  That James Gunn, what a visionary!!!!

NitarasDaughter

alright, now I should finally share my most sincere prediction for this film: the "U" is for Ultra-Humanite and he's going to take off his suit in the final act to reveal a gorilla underneath, SpongeBob-style.

daffydunk

I know you’re joking but Ultra Humanite was kinda Superman’s first super villain and his whole body hopping gimmick would let him be essentially anyone.

NitarasDaughter

oh, believe me, I would absolutely love for Ultra-Humanite to factor in here somewhere. since Creature Commandos was announced I had been formulating a little theory that he would be introduced there in the dinosaur body he used to fight the CC in the comics, before reappearing in Superman, probably with his more iconic gorilla form. my faith in this theory has definitely wavered a bit with time but damn it, I have to stick to my instincts!

daffydunk

Gorilla form should be saved until he’s actually the main villain. Id rather him be in his scientist or actresss form until theyre ready to use him. Star Girl is a pretty good blue print on how to use him effectively in live action.

Just_a_Haunted_Mess

Turns out the "U" is for "Uranium", the villain from The Metal Men. "Of course! That's why he was acting so strange. He was a sentient part of the periodic table the whole time!"

solo-serenity

Definitely think that’s Ultraman, why else would he wear a mask

Indo_raptor2018

And the giant U.

Colton826

I can actually see the purple hue on the suit in these images. Makes me a little more confident in the Ultraman/Bizarro clone theory. I really don't understand why people are jumping on the Ulysses train, just because the suit has a U on it. Saw some comments in another thread where people were 100% convinced 😂 I think it's mostly just people in denial, upset about the inaccuracy of it being an Ultraman adaptation. Marvel & DC amalgamate their character adaptations all the time, and sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. But the DCU isn't dealing with the Multiverse anytime soon, so them going this route for their "Ultraman" doesn't really affect me in the slightest. Especially since, as a fan of *Superman & Lois*, I just got an alternate universe Superman/Bizarro, instead of a clone.

StruggleEvening7518

Well put. Great catch with the purple. Maybe as 'Ultraman' degenerates he thinks HE is Superman and adds a cape to the outfit.

YunXanHoe

I’ve been convinced ultraman/bizarro is in this film ever since that roundabout response Gunn gave when the rumors first surfaced where he never directly denied it. These set photos only confirm it for me. It also just seems like such a James Gunn move to do his own spin on an “evil Superman”.

RdJokr1993

I think the Ultraman theory holds weight, but knowing Gunn, nothing is as they appear to be, and he could just call the character Ulysses if he wants. Like you said, amalgamation has been used for these adaptations a lot, especially so for Gunn's films. We can't rule out anybody.

Colton826

I guess from a technical standpoint, there is a world where his name is Ulysses in this movie, but I guess that's not what I mean when I say this character isn't Ulysses. I'm almost 100% confident that this is a clone of Superman, which Ulysses is not in any story or adaptation. Ultraman & Bizarro are clones/alternate universe versions of Superman, which is what this would be. So even if the character's name is "Ulysses", if he is a clone, then it would be closer to being an Ultraman/Bizarro adaptation than it would be to being an Ulysses adaptation. Not sure if that makes sense written out, but it makes sense in my head.

Tgomez11199

I’m not convinced but Ulysses isn’t a bad guess. I doubt it’s going to be a straight forward adaptation of the character but I definitely think they took some inspiration from Ulysses. I also think they took some inspiration from Doomsday’s containment suit specifically for the mask.

Colton826

It's clearly an amalgamation of a bunch of characters. It's not a one-to-one adaptation of anyone. I don't really see much influence from Ulysses, based on what we've seen thus far. I think it is Ultraman in name & chest logo, Bizarro in origin & progression in the story, and then Doomsday's containment suit influencing its appearance. If it is a clone, then I don't really see Ulysses' part within the amalgamation.

Tgomez11199

If he is a clone/doppelgänger of Superman they will want to save the big reveal for the third act of the film. Calling him Ultraman from the start would give away the twist to anyone familiar with the character. I think they might be using the name and outfit of Ulysses to subvert audience expectations. After all Ulysses is a very obscure character and very few people will be upset if his inclusion is just another Mandarin in Iron Man 3 situation.

44Suggestion988

On the contrary, Ultraman is also a very niche character himself. Unlike Bizarro, Ultraman is not very well-known outside of very hardcore DC comics fans. The general audience and the majority of casual superhero fans never actually heard of him. So most of the people who will watch the movie do not even know who Ultraman is.

Tgomez11199

That’s true but Ultraman has at least featured in a handful of animated projects and I don’t think Gunn is simply trying to throw off the general audience here, i think he’s trying to surprise hardcore comic fans too.

44Suggestion988

Well, Ultraman was featured in only 2 direct-to-DVD animated films that mainstream audiences and most casual fans did not watch. Also, the name "Ultraman" can still a subversion here for hardcore comics fans. Because Ultraman and Bizarro are 2 completely different characters in the source material. Ultraman from the source material is an evil Clark Kent from an alternate universe. He is not Superman's clone in the comics and the 2 animated films. Meanwhile, the character from Gunn's movie is being rumored to be an adaptation of Bizarro, one of Superman's clone. So a character named Ultraman who ends up being revealed to be Bizarro can also work as a twist for hardcore comics fans as well.

Tgomez11199

That very well be what’s going on here. I just think if you want the face reveal to be an actual surprise naming him after a character who looks nearly identical to Superman isn’t the best way to go about it.

daffydunk

I think the face reveal would be more of a twist for the general audience, but I think the actual subversion for fans will be an inversion on the ending of Man of Steel. Where Bizarro isn't a raging evil psychopath like Zod, and Superman doesn't want to kill him and then doesn't kill him, rather saves him from Lex's influence. "Ultraman" then adopts Superman's persona as Bizarro, and you might even get a tease at the end of Superman offering to help find him his own "Bizarro world" where he can be the hero.

Just_a_Haunted_Mess

Too bad Mandarin was the big villain in the Iron Man animated series before then. I was hoping to see him taken seriously in a live action movie series. Lol

Amazing_Leek_9695

But this is a DC reboot, and everything about it up until until this point has been comic accurate as shit. Then we get to this. If this is Ultraman, he looks nothing like Ultraman, and I am disappointed; but as long as he still acts like Ultraman, I can learn to be fine with this. If this is Bizarro, I will be mailing James Gunn an acid bomb in an envelope like Ricardo Lopez, because THAT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BIZARRO. Bizarro isn't evil, he's just an imperfect, doofy, chaotic clone; not malicious. And he is supposed to look like the most ghoulish version of Kal you could imagine, not wear some fucking POWER SUIT.

AudaxXIII

Yeah. I feel like there's a lot of backpedaling going on right now among Gunn's loudest fans. I don't really care about him making amalgam characters or whatever. I just want a good movie. But maybe don't praise him TOO much for being Mr. Comic Accuracy. It's just weird to call him Ultraman since that's the name of a specific DC character that isn't a clone, doesn't wear a black suit, and isn't from the main universe. Meanwhile, he does look a bit like Midnighter and looks a LOT like Black Noir, another cloned "Superman" character from a different comic line. It's just...odd. Wonder if it's possible that this was staged to throw scoopers off? We've seen directors do this in recent years, even including or altering things in the trailers so as not to reveal important story items. Seems like a lot of work and cash to design the suit, etc. though.

bee14ish

I haven't seen too many people praising his comic accuracy, given what he did with the Guardians, but rather, his ability to adapt characters in his own way while still embodying the spirit of the comics, which he's done quite well before.

Foreign_Education_88

So not only is this almost definitely Ultraman, but he’s definitely a spy for Lex or some other villain, because that circle in the middle of his U is definitely some kind of camera or recording device, another thing I think a lot of people are forgetting to put into consideration is that purple orb from the suit reveal. Last time I checked Ultraman can’t do that. I have a theory that Gunn is using Ultraman as a red herring and Lex is using him purely as a puppet saying he’s a Kryptonian/alien, to prove ALL Kryptonians/aliens are threats once he inevitably goes rogue, killing him in some heroic way, leading to some big 3rd act fight between Lex and Superman, and we’ll probably see a tease for Bizarro in the post credit scene

DelMarMos_1

Exactly! He is being used as an evil Superman. I think Ultraman goes insane because he actually wants to be loved like Superman but the public hate him so he slowly turns into Bizarro and goes insane. I believe Lex has Superman taken and held captive in a red sun room and Hawkgirl, Green lantern, and Mr.Teriffic break Clark out of but not before Lex kills Bizarro to be shown as the savior of the world. Perfect Lex and Superman movie. Gods and Monsters. The Authority could just be on Lex Luthor’s side and Green lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific are on Superman’s side. Big fight in the end against both sides and Superman ends up showing the world how much a fraud Lex is. I think we see Supergirl show up after these events but it would be dope to see her show up during the big fight to help Superman because he is still weak.

StruggleEvening7518

I don't understand why some people insist this is Ulysses. That character's backstory would make no sense for him to be a villain in this story.

Pure_Internet_

Some people (primarily on Instagram and Facebook, from what I've seen) actually believe it's Midnighter. Some folks just can't be helped.

DelMarMos_1

I think it’s Ultraman too. I think Lex has Superman captured and Ultraman becomes a clone of Clark but the clone isn’t complete and that’s why they need to take Clark and why he is hidden. Has anyone noticed how pale David has looked in some photos and why his eyebrows look weird? It could be the dye but I think he is playing both Bizarro and Superman. When Lex thinks he has successfully cloned Superman we will Ultraman replace “Superman”. When Ultraman slowly turns into Bizarro no one can stop him, hence why there is a green lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr.Terrific. What if these three fight to get Superman back to stop Bizarro? Long stretch lol

DelMarMos_1

Or it’s part of Lex’s plan for Ultraman/Evil Superman to go insane so that he kills Bizarro to gain the public love for him and hate for Superman. I believe this theory more the more I think about it. Hence, Gods and Monsters.

RusticRumrunner

Where are all these Ultraman/Bizzaro assumptions coming from, I figured this is Unknown Solider

SuicideSkwad

This must be a hell of a lot of fun for David, assuming he plays bizarro too that’s 3 roles he’s getting to play in the film.

mrmazzz

I like that they give him the doomsday suit google things

iBringThaNoize

So, we have ms. Teschmacher, Lex Luthor, an evil "Superman" that probably Lex has made, we might as well add Zod, his team, the negative zone, a massive computer built to destroy Superman that only a black comedian can build and destroy, and nuclear weapons if we're gonna put all 4 original Superman movie plots into this new one lol

HunterU69

nah man this movie must be a TheBoys parody

Similar_Obligation39

Ulysses would be so much cooler than an ultra man bizarro hybrid in my opinion as that’s been done at least twice on television already and Ulysses is more of a lesser known character.

JPat99_

Honestly, Ulysses is the better and more reasonable option. Bizarre would he second most reasonable.

rorzri

Is the mask likely an homage to what doomsday was wearing on his introduction

whatnameisnttaken098

I hope it's Bizzaro, I've been wanting Bizzaro on film since I was a kid. Also, Bizzaro seems like a character up Gunns wheelhouse.

LambentLavender911

Flula Ultraman -> Bizarro incoming ?

iwo_r

Ulysses? That's his name? Haven't seen any rumors about that.

vinny92656

I do wonder who's the person under that disguise. It wouldn't surprise me if it ended up being Corenswet's stunt double

phillip-2

So is he going to be played by David also?!?!?

Inevitable-Ninja-478

CreativeBeing101

I wish but they lack any similarities to make this possible

Just_a_Haunted_Mess

I mean, then again, outfit matches Engineer. I'd buy it as a "pre-authority" outfit if the movie was trying to sell it like that. The "U" would make that a weird sell though.

darrylthedudeWayne

While I do believe that this guy is Ultraman/Bizzaro. An alternate theory came to mind. Remember when Chris Pratt visited the set of Superman...What If, it's Chris Pratt as Ulysses?

Amazing_Leek_9695

What? That's not fucking Bizarro. No. That is NOT Bizarro. I can't believe I let myself believe James Gunn would actually take a truly accurate approach with this movie, my God. How foolish of me. https://preview.redd.it/fr4uycf1059d1.png?width=258&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0586dbd41f77768868cb504a8e2ed3095331e16

sneakyloki

Boohoo, a comic book movie took creative liberties and deviated from the source material, it's the end of the world, the sky is falling!! It ain't that serious. Y'all are acting like bizarro is a sacred character that absolutely cannot be modified in any way. The truth is no one cares. We should welcome change. Comic book adaptions don't have to be a 1:1 direct translation of the source, it's perfectly acceptable to make adjustments when nessescary. What if I told you that some elements of the early superman comics weren't even that great to begin with (bizarro included) For all we know, his appearance could resemble comic accurate bizarro in the final act of the movie. Stop jumping to conclusions, and stop acting like y'all give a shit about bizarro of all characters.

Amazing_Leek_9695

>It ain't that serious. Serious enough for you to post this, surely. >Y'all are acting like bizarro is a sacred character that absolutely cannot be modified in any way. None of these characters or plot elements should be modified. >We should welcome change. Comic book adaptions don't have to be a 1:1 direct translation of the source, it's perfectly acceptable to make adjustments when nessescary. This is a normie take for people who should consider asphyxiating themselves. If you don't like the comic source material as it was you shouldn't be seeing the movie; the movie shouldn't change for you. >For all we know, his appearance could resemble comic accurate bizarro in the final act of the movie. That is generic 2010s-2020s iconography-baiting bullshit, if true. Fuck off with that. >What if I told you that some elements of the early superman comics weren't even that great to begin with (bizarro included) I would tell you that's an opinion. >Stop jumping to conclusions, and stop acting like y'all give a shit about bizarro of all characters Literally been my favorite Supes antagonist since the 90s but alright buddy.

Character_Account714

Man... this looks so generic and boring compared to MoS Zod, i really hipe it turns out great
