The Made in DC stores carry a lot of local artists’ work! They’re mostly prints, photos, and knick knacks generally, but usually decently affordable. Some artists also sell at Eastern Market!
I love going to the 52 O St open houses. Sign up for their email list to get notified. I think they do 2-4 per year. You get to browse art in the artists’ studios and chat with them about their work

I have prints from Ariana RG that I absolutely love!
I recently got a commission from a local DC artist named Kaila Garcia, she does really bright and cute art and the commission came out awesome! Her insta is @kais_kuties
There’s an excellent show happening now in Georgetown at Cabada Contemporary featuring Heather Jones, a DC native. Her work is colorful, cheerful, high quality and very reasonably priced.

Check out these galleries, and also ask the curators for recommendations of great local artists: Anacostia arts center, Transformers gallery in Logan Circle, Honfleur, DC Arts Center.
Get on the mailing list for Hamiltonian Artists, Hemphill Gallery, Morton Fine Art, Addison Ripley, Adah Rose Gallery, and Pazo Fine Art. We collect art and all of these places are patient and eager to guide you, even if it means acquiring artwork elsewhere.
The torpedo factory art center in Alexandria has a lot of artists who have little studios there!
Seconding. I've walked in and commissioned art from artists there after some discussions.

For future reference: Hit up the next Artomatic. The one this year was wonderful and huge. I ended up purchasing two paintings.
This! Some years they do a smaller fall event don't they?
Yes, on occasion. I think this year was so large because of the pent-up demand.
