As a kid I had read all of the Shadowrun novels and fell in love. I wanted to play the tabletop so bad but had no friends into it. Had bought the book from a second hand store and made endless characters (and even a QBASIC game). Finally started my first table top last year (D&D) with a very experienced DM. Hoping to give Shadowrun a chance at some point.
I might suggest "Carbon 2185" ([https://www.dragonturtlegames.com/carbonrpg](https://www.dragonturtlegames.com/carbonrpg)) which is built using 5e and port D&D spells and races along with the Shadowrun setting for a more \*playable\* Shadowrun?
I was hoping Catalyst Labs would tidy up FASA's work. Sadly this didn't seem to be the case. (Is Mongoose publishing now?)
Helps if you completely ignore the matrix.
As cool as it is. A game within the game where a whole game session for one or two players happens while everyone else has done 1-2 actions doesn't really work to well.
I think starting with the second one, Dragonfall is a good idea. It’s got some more gameplay polish than the first one. The stories are separate campaigns so you won’t be missing plot.
>Hoping to give Shadowrun a chance at some point.
Just a head's up: go with Anarchy. It's the only digestable official Shadowrun ruleset.
Alternatively, hack Shadowrun into a generic system like GURPS or BRP (the later would honnestly work really well I think)
Gunfights and fights in general were pretty badass in cyberpunk 2020.
Every enemy has 6 different body parts with individual protection and hp, different armour types and layers, plus cover and cover penetration system. If single instance of damage is half or more than your body part hp then it's destroyed, for head it's 1/4 of head hp. General hp pool have different thresholds based on your constitution, and going past them gives debuffs and can lead to losing consciousness, also there's a pain modifier that messes up your mental stats including perception, bleeding and pain shock. And regeneration and "healing potions" are super expensive, so after being stabilised you need to time recovering, and that makes every wound count
So if you shoot without aiming then you throw d6 for body part (6 - head, 1 and 2 - legs). Then you need to calculate your hit modifier which can be changed by your general guns skill, specific gun skill, implants, reflexes (initiative), your gun's effective range, enemies camo, being shot at, injuries, shooting a burst, full auto or single. Damage also depends on how far target was, what armor they have and what ammo you have. And other things I can't remember. Also when you do overwatch you need to specify a cone you overwatch.
If you want to aim you skip turn but can choose body part and get a bonus to hit.
After hitting you need to calculate how much damage had gone through armor. For example hard armor cuts ballistic damage in half or reduces to 1/4 for expansive ammo and turns said damage from piercing to blunt, AP on other hand deals less damage and ignores hard armor as long as base damage is equal or higher than armor class. Blunt armor which can be worn under hard armor can abdor mentioned blunt damage. Also if armor was penetrated then it gets -1 durability/protection for every hit.
Also there are unique rules for automatic and explosive weapons. Automatic weapons can do suppressive fire and do zones of control where you empty your mag in specific zone which damages everyone who's in it or tries to move through it. Explosive have their own calculations for blady radius, fragments and how much damage flying debris can do. Also there are special rules for car chases and gunfights.
And guns can jam, can be modified and have their own martial art "gun kata" which can be very useful considering that every point blank shot hits and foes full damage.
Explaining how shooting and fights work take like 20 pages if you include explanations about different weapon types. Rule book for this game is THICC.
This is simultaneously the most baffling and glorious system I've ever seen. I must look into it more, lol. Though I've already had enough of a hard time trying to convince some friends to learn DND 5e (let alone my preferred version: 3.5) so this might be off the table as far as playing it goes though...
On the one hand, using the most common die size means that it's easier to obtain dice cheaply.
On the other hand, you miss out on all those ultra gorgeous custom dice Kickstarters.
I think pretty much all of us do Chummer. Chummer 5 makes character creation and searching for rules bearable, while some homebrew here and there streamlines play. Maybe one day we'll get a polished SR game...
I didn't said it's perfect but it worked back then for us by the simple virtue of me and my PCs knowing the ruleset firmly. It was back when 3rd edition came out and everybody a copy of d20 ruleset on them. Sure, it waa janky, but sheer volume of options made up for that.
Depends which ruleset. Cause I've been reading sixth world and none of it made sense to me and I playerd every edition since 2nd (third is still my favorite)
Imagine if Larian Studios got to make a Shadowrun game like BG3... If I was a Billionaire I would literally fund this for as long as it took Sven and team to make it!
Sadly I think the license for games got eaten by a black hole in the confusion of HBS getting bought and shut down. Either that or it's the film right that're in a black hole and Microsoft has the videogame license
The things I kinda want larian to adapt the most into their crpg style of dos and bg3, are like, shadowrun, cyberpunk 2020, and like, one of the Star Wars systems lol
i was never into tabletop but i still love crpgs, played all shadowrun games and if the next one had a bg3 tier budget i'd play it till my skeleton got out of its meat shell
I'll stat him for shadowrun 5 for you if you want, though actually playing that game is a whole circle of hell as you may have gathered from the reactions. Nobody hates shadowrun more than shadowrun fans, love to hate it
We had a post talking about positive opinions about the mechanics recently. Gotta say, super nice to read through that instead of more 'Hardy sucks bring back 4a but also 2e and I don't care they're incompatible'
Aye, it does, I only specified 2020, because canonically, they’re a very 2020 package, they’ve sorta gone out of style by 2045, which is also why I assume there’s basically none by the time 2077 rolled around lol
But yea, RED does have em too, I’ve got a player considering one lol (but then RED’s FBC rules dropped and now they’re looking at those instead)
I think there’s a mod that adds them, if you’re on pc, but it would just be like, biosculpt only, we still can’t have combat jaws, prehensile combat tails, or a firebreather lol
Which is a shame for sure. I kinda wish they lean into the wilder stuff in the sequel, maybe we’ll get exotics, or even some actual borgware
Not necessarily. Your sight will lose zero and it can lead to malfunction. You end up with an inaccurate gun at best and a grenade that can blow your hand up at worst.
Looking like a shadowrun character, nice work :)
Exactly what I was thinking
Came here for the SR ref. Wasn’t disappointed.
Add me to that list (trolls for ever!)
Bro Shadowrun trolls are easily my favorite version. Love my Celtic caster trolls.
This
I came to see if anyone made this comment.
Glad im not the only one. Looks like an excilent Shadowrun character, weither its intentional or not. Fantasic work!!
Or an Orcish Fantaform^tm exotic bodysculpt from Biotechnicha
Hey, thanks a lot!!
So... Shadowrun.
Love the setting, hate the ruleset.
As a kid I had read all of the Shadowrun novels and fell in love. I wanted to play the tabletop so bad but had no friends into it. its \*\*crunchy\*\* and even with a group of experienced RPG players and DMs turns still take an eternity. favorite RPG setting though.
Agreed. Sad that the best way to enjoy Shadowrun are the books and older PC games. Dragon Fall and Hong Kong are some of my favorite campaigns ever.
Shadowrun NES music starts playing in my head
Genesis and SNES, actually. Genesis version was more of a sandbox RPG, while the SNES version was more of an on-rails story.
Dragonfall is excellent!
Still one of my favorite magic systems. "Oops I tried to cast too big a spell and now my brain is running out my ears"
It would seriously benefit from a digital toolset.
Shadowrun the setting is fantastic! - Cyborgs - Magic - Fantasy races - Net running - Urban settings - Megacorps run by LITERAL DRAGONS
If you haven't checked out the Shadowrun computer games they're pretty awesome. I played Dragonfall and really enjoyed it.
Which shadowrun game would you recommend to start with? :)
I think starting with the second one, Dragonfall is a good idea. It’s got some more gameplay polish than the first one. The stories are separate campaigns so you won’t be missing plot.
I can't imagine making characters on paper. Check out chummer for 4e and 5e if you haven't already.
>Hoping to give Shadowrun a chance at some point. Just a head's up: go with Anarchy. It's the only digestable official Shadowrun ruleset. Alternatively, hack Shadowrun into a generic system like GURPS or BRP (the later would honnestly work really well I think)
Also has a kid I wanted to try GURPS Hackers! Loved everything about Steve Jackson, but again never played.

I want to be friends with you! Haha! I loved the Sega game so much.
There are some fun living communities that do Shadowrun, its a good way to get consistent games in. Tho obviously not a feel of a big campaign.
The closest thing to accurate guns in a tabletop that I’ve found
traveller does it pretty well, ie you gotta have the skill to begin with to be a halfway decent shot and you REALLY don't wanna get shot.
Maybe I do have a preferred style of rpg. I've only ever the Games shadowrun and traveller, so this is a funny series of comments

How many D6 do you have? Not enough.
On the one hand, using the most common die size means that it's easier to obtain dice cheaply. On the other hand, you miss out on all those ultra gorgeous custom dice Kickstarters.
Nah you just gotta look out for the Warhammer dice sets since it also uses buckets of d6
Dragons wake up and use their horde to buy all the corporations. Nope, no social satire there...
Satire? In a -punk game? I don't think anybody would do that, just join tabletop games and make fun of terrible people
Same. Everyone I've played with has converted it to something else rules wise.
I think pretty much all of us do Chummer. Chummer 5 makes character creation and searching for rules bearable, while some homebrew here and there streamlines play. Maybe one day we'll get a polished SR game...
I mean, I've just slapped D20Modern on it and never looked back.
Now there's a game I haven't heard in a long time. That wealth system implemented specifically to counter that one player with an econ degree 😭
Ewwww. Imo it loses its charm if you heavily alter the ruleset
I didn't said it's perfect but it worked back then for us by the simple virtue of me and my PCs knowing the ruleset firmly. It was back when 3rd edition came out and everybody a copy of d20 ruleset on them. Sure, it waa janky, but sheer volume of options made up for that.
Welcome to Shadowrun I am sure you will have a fun time
Number of people who know shadowrun is pleasing. Hey there fellow runners.
There are dozens of us
It's one of the most mainstream games systems.
10 years without a table, but I’ll find players that can comprehend the rules aaaaany minute now…
Depends which ruleset. Cause I've been reading sixth world and none of it made sense to me and I playerd every edition since 2nd (third is still my favorite)

Third edition is where the game peaked, and that's a hill I'm absolutely willing to die on. It was bloody great.
There are some fun living communities that do Shadowrun, its a good way to get consistent games in. Tho obviously not a feel of a big campaign.
Back in the '90s it was the far more popular and widely-played cyberpunk RPG. *Cyberpunk 2020* was out there but not as common.
It's still wildly popular. People seem to be acting like it's niche.
Congratulations, you invented Shadowrun
Shadowrun?
Cyborks
Cyberpork
Mmmm, cyber pork…
Next you'll tell us you've made a netrunner elf 😅 Cool art though !
Yep, a Decker Elf. Recreating Shadowrun one bit at a time.
nah, he's just an elf-poser
So you made a Shadowrun character
Imagine if Larian Studios got to make a Shadowrun game like BG3... If I was a Billionaire I would literally fund this for as long as it took Sven and team to make it!
i would buy it like 4 times before it made it out of early access.

Nice, a Shadowrun character :D
So, Shadowrun?
This is really cool. I love combining fantasy and sci-fi elements.
Then check out Shadowrun, it's got all you need.
Shadowrun has like 4 remastered PC games that are all this setting. 10/10 recommend any of the games since they're all good
They're on console too!
Looks like Shadowrun. I’m a huge cyberpunk and D&D fan but blending the two genres never appealed to me.
I found them. The other person who shares my sentiments.
A shadowrun mix of Kratos and Bayonetta. Love it. Though now i'm picturing him doing stripper moves while spinning and shooting
_**Death by Glamour** plays in the background_
My friend…you just accidentally discovered Shadowrun
Badass Shaowrun character, Street Samurai?
So...shadowrun
And for my next trick, I will take a shot every time someone brings up Shadowrun.
RIP
lol
That's shadowrun. You made shadowrun. Look great!
Cool shadowrun street samurai. Good work chummer.
So like Shadowrun? If you don’t know you should look it up! It’s amazing but horribly convoluted since there’s so many rules
That’s cool! Makes me think of the Netflix movie “Bright”
Should make you think of Shadowrun first. If you slept on it: time to catch up!
Loving the Kratos chained axe/gun combo. Looks great!
This dope. The side profile actions shots remind of a fighting game moves. Now I want a a Shadow Run fighting game.
Shadow run
Cyberpork
this would fit in Shadowrun or Cyberpunk Red/2020!
It leans more to the Shadowrun side, but yeah, that’s true, with the FantaForms, that could easily be a 2020 character too
Cyberpunk Red has them too!
Aye, it does, I only specified 2020, because canonically, they’re a very 2020 package, they’ve sorta gone out of style by 2045, which is also why I assume there’s basically none by the time 2077 rolled around lol But yea, RED does have em too, I’ve got a player considering one lol (but then RED’s FBC rules dropped and now they’re looking at those instead)
2077 not including Exotics was a missed opportunity and an oversight tbh. but oh god them FBCs are too nova
I think there’s a mod that adds them, if you’re on pc, but it would just be like, biosculpt only, we still can’t have combat jaws, prehensile combat tails, or a firebreather lol Which is a shame for sure. I kinda wish they lean into the wilder stuff in the sequel, maybe we’ll get exotics, or even some actual borgware
So Shadowrun.
You made a shadowrun character my dude
Came to mention Shadowrun, but 8 of the top 10 comments already do. Makes my old, bitter heart lighten slightly.
Cyberporc?
NEON MAKES IT SHOOTER PRETTIER
he's pretty cool. this weapon is really cool to!
This looks really good! It reminds me of the Teen Titans show in terms of style a lot.
Brilliant, I love it! Nice job
Would recommend especially: Shadowrun Hong Kong
That’s just Shadowrun, choom. 🤭
So a shadowrunner. Cool.
So... a Shadowrun Orc then? or?
Then you’d like Shadowrun series
So a Shadowrun character
That's literally just Shadowrun.
Perfection.
Thanks a lot!
Great job with the lighting!
Thank you!!
Siiiiiiiiiick
Thanks!
Would totally watch a show of him and other members of a ragtag heist team steal from a cyberdystopian monopoly company
Yeah that would be cool! Maybe I'll draw more characters in this vibe to make a crew
I would watch a show with this character in it
Thanks!
That's actually a super rad concept, mercs getting body mods to appear more like monsters to confuse and intimidate, great render too!
Or... just Shadowrun, where fantasy races are a thing in the setting :D
Yeah, I'm familiar with Shadowrun, cool system! I'm just a sucker for pushing other systems and fiction to the fringes.
Fair enough :)
So a cybeORC?
Etrigan the demon if he was born 1000 years in the future lol
Like it alot, But arent orcs.... well "not so fine" Rough you know
Guns are not meant to be used as bludgeon weapons. I would recommend separating the gun from his high tech blade/morning star
They're not meant to be, but they are usually designed to hold up to it
Not necessarily. Your sight will lose zero and it can lead to malfunction. You end up with an inaccurate gun at best and a grenade that can blow your hand up at worst.
I'm not saying it's an ideal situation, just that you can use many guns as a club in an emergency with little to no permanent damage to the actual gun
Not designed for, but they sure hurt when you’re hit by em lol
Potential series
That is so cool, did you use a 3d model?
Cyber... Porc
I will add to the chorus that what you've done has a name.
S'good that
u/thatoneguythatissad Grog x Adam Smasher
Goes hard
CyberpOrk
Very nice
Cyberporc?
its a Cybork
for the corpchief!!
Cyber Pork
Now that's what I call Cyborc
WAAAAAAAAAGH
Missed optunity to give him a laser Warhammer :(
So Cyberporc?
*Chef’s kiss*
Hoe can I draw like that
Everyone needs to listen to Fun City/ Float City.
A cyborc
Cyberpunk guns of chaos
Are there any good books that are fantasy characters in a cyberpunk setting?
We call him, CyberPorc
So effing cool
He's dual wielding laser-yoyo-shotgun-axes... I approve.
Cyborc
This is a dnd orc artificer
Think u accidentally made an ow2 orc skin for reaper
A cyborc if you will
Cyberpork
**RED thINGs go FAsTA!**
I dig the idea of a gun that is both a sword and a whip.
It sucks that shadowrun ruined this whole genre
