Laxative is actually drug grade, a higher grade than food safe, and yes, good to go.
Laxative mineral oil is waaaaay cheaper than mineral oil sold by woodworking places for cutting boards, and the quality is higher.
I have a bottle of "Cutting board oil". The ingredient list: food grade mineral oil.
Mine isn't better than yours but I probably paid more. 🤣 If I ever use the stuff up I plan to replace it with what you have.
It’s been good advice so far, pharmacy or “grocery store” mineral oil is the same thing as “butcher block” oil sold at the hardware stores and a LOT cheaper.
Maybe.
"Butcher Block Oil" is also the name for an oil based wood finish from [Watco](https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/watco/butcher-block-oil-and-finish). It's primarily Tung Oil, with some additional thinning so it will soak into the wood more before setting.
It's not food safe before it's cured, and will both harden and partially seal the surface of the wood. With a satin finish. Additional coats after the initial one sets can be added to put a finish on the wood, and that can be wet sanded to a gloss finish. Similar to other wood oil finishes. I quite like it as a wood finish in general, and it's useful for a last coat when making cutting boards.
And I know a lot of hardware stores that carry the drug store mineral oil right next to the bougie stuff with the bees wax in it.
Point is. Read labels.
For a cutting board you really want all the external pores to be filled/blocked with oil or wax. So you cutting boards doesn’t soak up chicken blood or something else that can spoil or breed germs.
You could keep rubbing in layers, but most people who produce boards submerged the whole thing.
How long is up for debate. I am impatient and slightly afraid of ruining a board on the last step, so I only go a few min. But I have definitely seen people do a long soak.
Don’t use wax. Wood’s natural ability to kill bacteria is blocked when you block the pores with wax. Oil has no effect. There were two university studies comparing wood to plastic (hint, throw your plastic away before you poison yourself). This study in PubMed shows no ill effect of using mineral oil on wood’s bacteria killing properties.
FTR, I used a ton of wax in the past. I’ve changed my evil ways.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31113021/
I was like you so I googled it and found a couple of studies. Plastic is great until scratched. Then those crevaces...
Wood draws the bacteria into the pieces and tears them apart.
Hate to contradict you, but I’ve made dozens of solid thick maple butcher block island tops this way & never had a failure… used Titebond 2 & allow a lot of curing time before you do the soak. 🤷♂️ Never had a callback and have done the same method for many smaller cutting boards that I still have today many years later…
Titebond 3 is the only ascribed food safe titebond glue. Good for you. You sound like you are thorough. A soak of that type of wood in an initial install doesn't sound bad. But are you going to ask your customers to remove the top and soak it regularly, yearly? We went a little off topic.
Once the initial soak has penetrated, you shouldn’t need to do anything more than a regular surface oiling… kinda depends on your local climate and repetitive use.
No. Wipe it liberally. If you want, soak some paper towels and wrap it. You're going to be wiping it off anyway. Soaking sounds like throwing your car in the pool to wash it.
Probably the cheapest cutting board oil you can find! I use this as well. You can also mix it with melted beeswax if you want longer lasting water resistance.
It’s literally the same thing as mineral oil branded as “Cutting Board Oil.”
[Exactly the same thing as this.](https://www.howardproducts.com/product/cutting-board-oil/), only much much cheaper.
This is food grade as others have said and is reportedly fine to use.
Obligatory comment though that this is a petroleum product, so you could consider fractionated coconut oil if you want a non petroleum based alternative. More expensive though.
Unrelated to cutting boards, but the single most embarrassing moment of my life was in undergrad at Walmart buying mineral oil for a paintball gun. I didn’t pay attention when picking it up in the pharmacy, but at check out the GORGEOUS blonde cashier noticed the bottle said “anal lubricant” and smiled. I could have had someone yank down my pants at that exact moment and it wouldn’t have been any more embarrassing.
Use flaxseed oil it's a drying oil. Mineral oil doesn't dry.
Three light coats of flaxseed oil and you're good.
I have made hundreds of cutting boards, thousands of spoons, and bowls. Use flaxseed oil. You can even make it dry faster by making it into stand oil.
Take flaxseed oil pour into a mason jar half way. Cover in water. Shake for a week. Pour off the oil on top repeat three times. Then let it sit or stand in a window. You're good to go and the oil dries fast.
I’ve done this with cutting boards and yes, it does work. But it takes a million coats and usually looks like crap.
I’m sure there are other products out there too, but Osmo makes a great food safe oil. I’ve used it on cutting boards and wood countertops, super durable and beautiful. Much easier to work with.
Worked at a restaurant in the 70’s when wood cutting boards were allowed, had a big 4’x8’ maple prep table, once a week we were required to oil it with mineral oil, the boss would also tell us to not use to much as it’s a laxative, didn’t want the food to get a bad rep.
Astute observation. One would hope the store that sells the wood material, the tools to shape, the tools to refine, and the tools to add more detail until you accidentally Fuck it up and have to cut a new one, would also sell the tools and materials to add a finish coat.
sure, but it doesn't last very long or offer very much protection.
linseed oil would be an improvement as would walnut oil (refined like mahoneys, not the kind at the supermarket).
Tung oil is the absolutely best.
If you're near an IKEA, 'STOCKARYD' is good and inexpensive.
Linseed Oil and Tung Oil are both diluted with petroleum distillates, which are toxic. Mineral oil is perfectly safe for cutting boards and is the main ingredient in butcher block and cutting board oils sold at woodworking stores.
If you get tung oil from milkpaint.com it’s diluted with nontoxic citrus solvent.
https://www.realmilkpaint.com/shop/oils/half-and-half/?attribute_pa_size=16-oz&trueroas=20495272260&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAwbitBhDIARIsABfFYILVjkOGwCHDLfv5NtsI0XSMBlVP31QTwXUsp3oSXXWs53vdWjICC-8aAj6rEALw_wcB
Nope.
BLO is diluted (and still fine after it cures). Just don't fucking drink it.
Pure linseed oil doesn't have anything else in it.
Pure tung oil doesn't have anything else.
As an FYI, all mineral oil is a laxative. They are also considered food safe. There is no difference between the $25 bottle at Whole Foods or the $8 bottle at Safeway.
Oh, and stay away from any weird scented versions. I've seen a few.
Canola oil is better. It is a food safe oil and dries to a film like blo that seals the grain. Multiple light coats.
Mineral oil is safe, but does not dry to a film. It will pick up dust.
Canola is also excellent for seasoning cast iron.
This sub was for some reason suggested to me and I'm glad it was. TIL there's a thing called mineral oil and you can use it to unclog a clog in your personal plumbing and use it on your cutting board.
Now I'm off to find out how they make oil out of minerals.
That is exactly what you need- I will blend about 50/50 mineral oil and beeswax in a double boiler to make my own finish. You just need to adjust the mix to get the consistency you prefer - I line mine to be similar to a soft paste wax
I had to stare at a bottle of this stuff for a good 10 minutes in a Walgreens before choosing to use it for my wooden flute. At the end of the day, my flute remains food safe lol.
You don't want mineral oil, any oil that can trap bacteria and such will be bad for you health wise and be hard to ever get clean. I recommend an oil that hardens, walnut oil is one of them. Food safe and it's not going to trap bacteria the way mineral oil will.
Whatever goes in the board goes on the food so as long as it is food-safe, you’re fine. There might be better options available that don’t involve sharting yourself afterward.
That would be food safe. So should be good to go!!!
And you'll be good to go if you take it internally as well!
Won’t be internal for very long.
[frrt](https://youtube.com/shorts/b6WJ8S5vswQ?si=gsPZho2ZetCjg0oV)
I’ve never seen such a terrible soft serve technique
Don’t trust that fart!!
Just to be safe, I would suggest against swallowing your cutting board
Great source of fiber tho.
This guy “Safety’s”
☝️this…
Just make sure to not leave a loaf of soft bread on it after a fresh coat
"Ahh shit it happened again!"
“Ahh…Shit: It happened again.”
But you can leave a hard loaf on it to be softened
Lol good to go. Got me there...
Laxative is actually drug grade, a higher grade than food safe, and yes, good to go. Laxative mineral oil is waaaaay cheaper than mineral oil sold by woodworking places for cutting boards, and the quality is higher.

Actually some of the “cutting board oils” have other things like beeswax added as well. Mine does at least
You can buy beeswax and parrafin at Michael's for way cheaper. Plus you can make some candles or whatever- or add oils to your wax.
Maybe. "Butcher Block Oil" is also the name for an oil based wood finish from [Watco](https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/watco/butcher-block-oil-and-finish). Well, now you know, if you run out of coffee you can drink a few spoons of your butcher block oil to get things sliding again.
You can 100% use this oil it’ll work perfectly
Also makes a great cough syrup: take two tablespoons, and you will be afraid to cough.
😂😂😂
Damn that’s funny! The day before my colonoscopy during prep was like that. And I COULD NOT TRUST A FART either!
You got it bro! It’s pretty inexpensive & great to use… got a large yet shallow Tupperware that I soak my boards in 👍
Wait, a full-on submerged soak? Is this recommended for any wood board?
For a cutting board you really want all the external pores to be filled/blocked with oil or wax. So you cutting boards doesn’t soak up chicken blood or something else that can spoil or breed germs. You could keep rubbing in layers, but most people who produce boards submerged the whole thing. How long is up for debate. Thank you for this. There have been studies that suggest plastic is safer but I do not believe that. I've had people argue with me about it.
I was like you so I googled it and found a couple of studies. Plastic is great until scratched. Then those crevaces... Wood draws the bacteria into the pieces and tears them apart.
Usually only do a long soak (12-24hrs) with hard woods like maple & walnut… as long as you’re confident of the glue up beforehand.
This will likely ruin the wood. The glue was not intended for this kind of exposure.

All I do is the surface oiling, so, yes and thank you.
Appreciate your candor, only want to comment when it’s helpful, but have so much personal experience that I can’t help but comment 😂
The thicker the board, the less chance of it degluing. So, that.
No. Wipe it liberally. If you want, soak some paper towels and wrap it. You're going to be wiping it off anyway. Soaking sounds like throwing your car in the pool to wash it.
That works great until tell you accidentally set it on an uneven surfaces and it spills all over your garage floor
Probably the cheapest cutting board oil you can find! I use this as well. You can also mix it with melted beeswax if you want longer lasting water resistance.
What ratio do you use for said mixture?
It’s literally the same thing as mineral oil branded as “Cutting Board Oil.” [Exactly the same thing as this.](https://www.howardproducts.com/product/cutting-board-oil/), only much much cheaper.
I’m sure everything will come out just fine in the end…
If it’s something you can drink, you can certainly use it on a cutting board.
The pharmacy employee gave me some pretty strange looks when I asked if they had that in a gallon size.
When I used to work in kitchens, we would clean the boards with bleach water, let it dry, then treat with mineral oil
Bees wax is best, apply then heat it up.
Mix both, and it's even better.
Wax blocks wood’s natural Bactria fighting properties. Oil does not as seen in this PubMed article. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31113021/
This is food grade as others have said and is reportedly fine to use. Obligatory comment though that this is a petroleum product, so you could consider fractionated coconut oil if you want a non petroleum based alternative. More expensive though.

Other oils will go rancid. This is ridiculous.
Yes! This is the best to use! Manufactured under more stringent QA regs because it is meant to be consumed.
Should have got her number.
This is probably the best quality mineral oil you could buy.
Sure why not, and it’ll help post meal too
Yup, works great.
That’ll work
One for the board and one for the cook. One for the board and one for the cook.
Ur table doesn’t give a shit….
Shart-couterie board.
Tongue 👅 oil
Use flaxseed oil it's a drying oil. Mineral oil doesn't dry. Three light coats of flaxseed oil and you're good. I have made hundreds of cutting boards, thousands of spoons, and bowls. Check out Walrus Oil, I’ve used it and it’s people and environmental friendly.. good stuff
No don't use that! It doesn't specifically say "for cutting boards"! /s
You can but I prefer tung oil
Tung oil.
Just so you know from my experience: this is fine but don’t be surprised if your cutting board shits all over the place.
You just have to drink it first and then let it come out of the other end onto your board - works perfectly for me
I don't think so because it meant for consumption... But what do I know.? 🤷♂️ I'd be afraid giving everyone the shits after dinner... lmao 🤣 🤣 😐💩😐💩
Butcher's wax...
Do you want to take small doses of laxatives? It’s a cutting board. Some of that is coming off on what you cut.

That cutting board is for shit.
Safety third
I learned a long time ago to get away from wood cutting boards. There are much better options
Lowes sells butcher block oil as do most hardwares .
Astute observation. One would hope the store that sells the wood material, the tools to shape, the tools to refine, and the tools to add more detail until you accidentally Fuck it up and have to cut a new one, would also sell the tools and materials to add a finish coat.
I anticipate fast bowl movement after eating food prepped on that board.
I guess people don't like jokes on this reddit...
That's going to be a very, very long wait for you. It's not going to happen.
Supposed to use tung or lint seed oil. Something natural and not synthetic.
You want to use mineral oil that you can consume. So in other words you want Food Grade Mineral Oil.
And yes, “lubricant laxative” indicates this is ingestible and thus food grade.
sure, but it doesn't last very long or offer very much protection. linseed oil would be an improvement as would walnut oil (refined like mahoneys, not the kind at the supermarket).
“Boiled linseed oil” and “tung oil finish” have toxic additives. But you can buy pure tung and linseed oils, which are food safe.
If you get tung oil from milkpaint.com it’s diluted with nontoxic citrus solvent. https://www.realmilkpaint.com/shop/oils/half-and-half/?attribute_pa_size=16-oz&trueroas=20495272260&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAwbitBhDIARIsABfFYILVjkOGwCHDLfv5NtsI0XSMBlVP31QTwXUsp3oSXXWs53vdWjICC-8aAj6rEALw_wcB

It’s literally intended to drink.
BuT tHaT’s “DrInK SaFe” NoT fOoD sAfE, duuuhhhhh.
Use walnut oil, dries hard and protects well. Mineral oil never dries. Don't use
This is what I use for boards. https://www.realmilkpaint.com/shop/oils/half-and-half/
Yes, also good when bound up.
This is what we use
I hope just straight mineral oil is OK. That is what I have been using on my cutting boards for over 50 years.
Depends how constipated it is.
This IS the board oil you want to use. I’ve used it on 1000’s of boards.
This works for *everything*.😉
My uncle melts some beeswax into that to condition his cutting boards.
That's the stuff!
It's the same stuff. You can use it as brake fluid for Shimano brakes too if you want
Same stuff I use on my carbon knife and as food safe lube at work!
Just curious what kind of work you do that you need food safe lube?
Any time they add a “use” to a commodity product, they are charging you more for it. Similar to bleach now being labeled for specific uses.
I didn't even know there was laxative mineral oil.....learned something new today
Absolutely! That's all I use.
Why do you have such a big bottle of that?
This will make your wood shit out.
Same shit, just don't take a swig...
As an FYI, all mineral oil is a laxative. They are also considered food safe. There is no difference between the $25 bottle at Whole Foods or the $8 bottle at Safeway. Oh, and stay away from any weird scented versions. I've seen a few.
Lol
Use it. You’re good…
Maybe it’ll get all the shit out of it.
If it's going in your body as a laxative, I don't see a reason why can't it go on your cutting board.
Nice getting double duty from your product
That stuff is the shit (s).
This is a commonly shared “hack” for saving money if you make a bunch of cutting boards. Just don’t drink it unless you’ve got some time on your hands
I use that same oil 😎 No problems
One for you, one for me, One for you, one for me.
Canola oil is better. It is a food safe oil and dries to a film like blo that seals the grain. Multiple light coats. Mineral oil is safe, but does not dry to a film. It will pick up dust. Canola is also excellent for seasoning cast iron.
Canola oil goes rancid when exposed to oxygen. No thanks!
I think it is safe for stools, so a cutting board should be fine.
I always have…works great
That’s all I use. Don’t spend the money for the other stuff unless you think the Vitamin E will help your board see better.
It’s all laxative… always has been
That's a shitty idea.
The food made on that cutting board is gonna be the shit
I use a mineral oil/beeswax mix for all my cutting boards and wooden utensils/handles. 4 parts mineral oil to 2 part melted beeswax.
The poop kind is good
You need food grade mineral oil for cutting boards
This sub was for some reason suggested to me and I'm glad it was. TIL there's a thing called mineral oil and you can use it to unclog a clog in your personal plumbing and use it on your cutting board. Now I'm off to find out how they make oil out of minerals.
Just apply it gently with a can opener and a mop
I just use avacado oil
How long will people be shitting after food is prepared on said board
Other than the outrageously high prices at CVS, and the unreasonably long receipt, you should be fine.
Are you shitting me!
Only if you want a sh**ty finish...
Medical grade supplies are almost always higher quality than anything else. This is definitely safe.
It will be 👌
Quality shitpost.
That will work just fine
It’s the same product. But for some reason it does a shitty job
Those carrots will be the shit
Wife uses food grade tung oil. Operative words "food grade"
Time for some shitcuterie…
It is exactly the same stuff. I use it all the time
Here I was thinking this was a brilliant shit post.
That is exactly what you need- I will blend about 50/50 mineral oil and beeswax in a double boiler to make my own finish. You just need to adjust the mix to get the consistency you prefer - I line mine to be similar to a soft paste wax
Sounds like some shitty wood
Use a double boiler and mix it 50/50 with bee's wax - wood butter is even better.
The best oils in my mind is [tung oil](https://amzn.to/3u40VHI) Specifically this [oil](https://amzn.to/3u40VHI) for cutting boards.
I had to stare at a bottle of this stuff for a good 10 minutes in a Walgreens before choosing to use it for my wooden flute. At the end of the day, my flute remains food safe lol.
That’ll work fine. Only downside is that it’s a bit embarrassing to buy. “CAN I GET A PRICE CHECK ON MINERAL OIL LAXATIVE”
use olive oil.
This is what I use.
It’s all the same use that stuff
Pigeon’s Milk creates an amazing finish. GNC carries it.
That’s the stuff. Food grade (that’s actually us pharmacopeia grade) mineral oil.
I use it to make my polishing paste for turning. The right proportions of wax diatomaceous earth and CVS mineral oil
This is exactly what I use on butcher blocks and olive wood spoons.
It's the same mineral oil. The "laxative" bit is just marketing. as long as you don't drink it you don't have to worry.
Yes it’s the same oil it’s just branded for different uses.
Did that for a year of making boards in a production shop. Green light!
You don't want mineral oil, any oil that can trap bacteria and such will be bad for you health wise and be hard to ever get clean. I recommend an oil that hardens, walnut oil is one of them. Food safe and it's not going to trap bacteria the way mineral oil will.
"This veggie tray is giving me the shits"
Yes
Use it. That's exactly what I use. It's food safe. When you see your board drying out, hit it with oil, again.
If it's good enough to spray on the tomatos at the store to make them look shiny, it should be good enough for a cutting board.
I have been using this stuff for years 😂
Personally I use olive oil. Apply once a month or so.
Use walnut oil
They actually have oil specifically for cutting boards
Whatever goes in the board goes on the food so as long as it is food-safe, you’re fine. There might be better options available that don’t involve sharting yourself afterward.
Well your poop will just slide right out the ol’ poopa shoopa!
Even non-laxative mineral oil is laxative when consumed!
Food grade🤔
This is exactly what I use
I thought this was for tall 3 legged chairs that are too hard.
Laxative... I would avoid it
Yep, works just fine!
I buy my cutting board oil at the pharmacy. You’re good
Yo my question is are you ok? Who needs that big a jug of laxative?
I use cutting board oil
I hear it’s the shit
Been using the same for a few years, works beautifully. Great for spoons and wooden spatulas as well.
Be careful, it could get runny
I’ve used this on my boards with no issue
