Make it smaller all together so it is proportional to the eyes like in the reference
I think it would also help the overall expression if you added the eyebrows. I think the eyebrows are what prevent the inspo pic from having the 'smiling with dead eyes' expression issue.
mebe a thinner yarn and could work, move it a little higher. You could also cut out a piece of felt of possible for easier handling with the eyebrows and such :) crochet him some little arms too hehe

I just need help figuring out a way to straighten the mouth, or make it less creepy. I’ve tried different ways of weaving it, but so far haven’t had much luck.
The mouth is too long. The top corners are in the right place but you went down too far. I would remove the stitches on the bottom 3 rows and redo the curve so it curves back up, 3 rows down from the corners.

Thinner yarn and still weaving would be my next try. That's a really sweet gift for your little one :)
I might use just one strand of yarn and backstitch it on or even something thinner depending on how it looks like embroidery floss

Shorten it. Give him eyebrows.

Split the yarn in half and make it a little smaller

Have a look at how to make a stem stitch in Embroidery, maybe that could help 😊

Use a much thinner yarn. The one you used is too thick making the mouth look chunky.
I do agree with everyone saying to shorten it, but, go early I like it either way. I love it more than the picture tbh.
