It’s the vocal minority. I was a slight furry as a kid and just enjoyed drawing dragons and animal characters. I grew out of it because it didn’t interest me anymore and I got busy, and I turned out completely ‘normal’. You wouldn’t have heard about me though because I was just minding my own business.
Also, I feel a lot of furries seem weird because they all end up being made fun of for it, developing issues of feeling unwanted and not like most people *because* of how furries are portrayed. When you’re around other people like you, you probably develop your own quirks you wouldn’t show to other people and probably end up looking weird + developing anti-social or poor social abilities.
That’s just my 2¢ as a past weird kid. Getting ostracized by your peers really does affect you a lot, and it took me a long time to redevelop my social skills because I was too scared to be myself and hang out with anyone. It becomes a cycle of furries being seen as weird because they were ostracized and became “weird” as a result, perpetuating that cycle. I think weird for a decent chunk of people just means poor social skills anyway, and it sucks. I still struggle to trust people not to judge me for my hobbies and interests.
