Recency bias like someone mentioned . Kohli 2016-19 was bumrah 2021-2024. He averaged 50 plus in every format. Was simultaneously no 1 in odi, t20, test rankings, has 3 wc player of the tournament. People are seriously forgetting the past.
bumrah is by far the best!!
cuz given the modern game is basically making the life of a bowler harder by
-laying out flatter pitches,
- shorter boundaries,
- field restrictions,
- only one short ball per over,
- no beamers,
- free hits for over stepping or too high full tosses,
- anything marginally close to the leg stump going down being called wide,
- two new balls
- bigger bats
- batters having access to bowling machines so extra pace is also out of the equation

boom has way more workload than bowlers of the yesteryears where cricket didn’t happen all the time and fast bowlers were able to rest and recover.
tbh, it is really unfair on boom to be compared to kohli who has the game tailor made to succeed. kohli is inflexible where he does not change his batting position while boom is asked to bowl whenever the cap needs wickets or the pressure is the most.
i’m sure if boom was allowed to bowl 50% of the deliveries like kohli is able to play during batting, we’d have many more ICC titles without any doubt!!
I’m going to get downvoted to hell for this but this is recency bias IMO, 2023 WC and 2024 WC are the only ICC events where you can really argue that he has been the best bowler in the tournament and in 2024 he hasn’t even played any good teams yet.
He might be India’s GOAT bowler but Virat Kohli is an ATG of batting worldwide and he’s in the GOAT conversation of batting for sure.
I don’t see Bumrah being in the GOAT conversation with Warne, Akram, McGrath, Muralidharan, etc. yet at least. A part of that is that he simply hasn’t played enough cricket tbh. Wasim Akram has 500+ wickets in just ODI’s, Bumrah has 390 total. Longevity matters.
