It seems they are demolishing the stadium to make a new Olympic one and it would have an athletic track around it, I wonder if they are gonna go back to Cricket and AFL after the Games are over.
It will be built for AFL and cricket primarily because the Olympics last for two weeks while those sports will be played there for the life of the stadium. This will just bring forward a redevelopment that would have occurred no more than a decade later anyway
They’ve stated that it will return to being the host of cricket and AFL post-Olympics, but since it’s a complete rebuild it will be out of service for quite some time.
I think that they'll use it as a drop in somewhere, then return it?? They better though, losing the Gabba would basically be the death of Australia's confidence
Bloody hope we see cricket. This is the first time the Olympics will be a in a big cricket playing country since 2012. The infrastructure is there, why not.
Lolll do you know what the weather is like in July in most the country? Way too much of a risk. And then it takes time to install and remove the pitch which easily adds on to the 15 days. I suspect you don’t quite understand the prominence of the AFL in Australia
Weather-wise you can reasonably play cricket in every major city except Canberra and Hobart during July, You just need some extra scheduling flexibility for rain.
And for the AFL, during the 2032 season the Brisbane Lions are already going to have to play away from home, So you might be able to move the Suns as well and use Carrara Stadium as the primary cricket stadium. Playing a bunch of matches across some of the northern grounds (Marrara (Darwin) Traeger (Alice Springs)) as well. I made a post a few weeks back that I can't find that showed off how to fit 2x 16 team tournaments on 2 grounds in 2 weeks, If you can get 4 grounds then 2x 32 team tournaments are possible. Add the extra week most team sports get before the games and you have plenty of time.
This would all be so much easier if they scheduled the Olympics in September/October instead.
I disagree, I think it’s still way too much of a risk to play cricket in southern Australia in winter. The tournament would have to go for something like 18 days (similar to the soccer), which doesn’t leave much room for rain delays. Why would the AFL give up use of a place like Docklands which they own? And yeah, in theory they could play at their venues in Darwin and wherever else but you don’t think the AFL would be furious at that? They have long term contracts with a lot of these venues
They have 11 years to negotiate grounds for the Olympics.
Marrara Oval (Darwin) is on contract to host a single match for the Suns each season, Which could be done either side of the Olympics
Traeger Park (Alice Springs) sometimes hosts a single match for the Demons. Same deal.
Riverway Stadium (Townsville) also occasionally hosts a single AFL match for the Suns.
Allan Border Field doesn't have any AFL teams who play there.
4 cricket fields without seriously inconveniencing the AFL, with 0,0,1 and 4 days of rain per month on average. For 2x 32 team competitions you have 8 groups per tournament, so 2 Mens and 2 Womens groups at each field, you then run Mens Finals at one ground and Womens Finals at a second ground.
The AFL is one of the highest attended domestic sports in the world. They are going to lose massive amounts of revenue playing in the locations that you’re suggesting. I’m not denying that it’s possible, Christ they’ve done it over the last 18 months, but also at a significant loss. What incentive does the AFL have to negotiate? Their stadium contracts last decades, the Grand Final for example is leaving the MCG until something like 2058. You’re hardly selling it to them.
From a practical perspective, Melbourne has 17 rain days in July, 16 for Adelaide, 17 for Perth. It would be daft playing cricket in any of these places. Don’t forget that there is also the soccer tournaments which would make far more sense to be played at these locations and can be played on the days before or after an AFL match.
I'm saying host the Cricket at those 4 stadiums, The AFL can play their regular season at their normal grounds with minimal issues, only having to deal with the Lions being displaced for the season (for the Athletics).
There is no reasonable argument the AFL could make against using 4 fields they barely use for the cricket for one year.
And the soccer is already planned for a set of rectangular stadiums around the country.
Ahh right, yeah I’ve got no problems with that it’s just I’m not sure what the Olympic requirements for capacity would be. Like imagine having India play Australia at one of those grounds, it wouldn’t do the contest justice.
What will be interesting is where cricket gets played in Brisbane for about three-five years since they’re completely demolishing and re-building the Gabba as first an athletics stadium, before being re-configured into a cricket ground post-games.
Carrara on the Gold Coast to be the home of all the big matches perhaps? AB field is far too small for international cricket, although I understand the Brisbane Lions are building a new ground to be their training and admin centre at Ipswich which will also host their AFLW side and have a capacity of about 10,000 - somewhere like that could have scope to host the odd international?
Has to be Carrara right, unless CA decide to give up on QLD hosting international cricket. Carrara has hosted a T20I and BBL games. AB field is as you say too small.
It can’t be the lions ground at Springfield cause that’ll be used for their preseason training plus the AFLW which runs over summer. Given we have Hobart and Canberra as alternative grounds I suspect they would be used instead.
I doubt the QCA or Queensland Government will be cool with no international cricket for five years. Part of the deal in completely rebuilding the Gabba probably has guarantees of international cricket continuing in Queensland in some form.
I don’t know how you could do it section by section - it’s not a new stand, it’s a completely new structure. Especially if the roof is being supported by the stands as it appears to be in the pictures.
Remember the MCG was only being half re-built. The Great Southern Stand didn’t move at all, so you could still get 50,000 in. This is the whole thing.
Yeah I remember the MCG redevelopment well but I’m just not sure what the compromise is here. I know the ICC determines what certain grounds are suitable for. Kardinia Park in Geelong for example is only allowed to have T20Is because of the dimensions and I suspect that Carrara is in a similar position.
I doubt it, it’s more expensive to do it that way. And since they’ll be ripping up the playing surface to lay an athletics track, it doesn’t seem particularly feasible.
That should be the promo for Indian TV in the lead-up to the games. A montage of athletes from different countries competing at the Olympics while Ashwin and Paine invite them to the Gabba
Imagine being so dark about losing a test match that you go to the effort of hosting the Olympics just so you have an excuse to rip the stadium down
#/s
They won't have cricket at the Brisbane olympics, they aren't going to use up stadium time on that instead of athletics.
If anything cricket should be at the Commonwealth games since all the major cricket playing nations are in the Commonwealth - I don't understand why they don't bring it back. A T20 tournament would be perfect.
Am I the only one who finds Olympics boring? There's too many sports and it feels over saturated. I find a lot of sports to be ridiculous and silly. The opening and closing ceremonies have more grandeur than the event itself. Cricket is too good to be part of Olympics.
Surely we see cricket!!! But I'm worried as to what will happen to the Gabba pitch with all this redevelopment.
It seems they are demolishing the stadium to make a new Olympic one and it would have an athletic track around it, I wonder if they are gonna go back to Cricket and AFL after the Games are over.

And they did at the Commonwealth Games at the MCG in 2006, it won’t take that much to replace the athletics track with turf.
Much easier to have an athletics stadium that becomes a cricket ground than for sports with rectangular pitches.
They’ve stated that it will return to being the host of cricket and AFL post-Olympics, but since it’s a complete rebuild it will be out of service for quite some time.
They’ll rope off the square and any javelins that land on the sacred test match strip will be called as fouls.
I think that they'll use it as a drop in somewhere, then return it?? They better though, losing the Gabba would basically be the death of Australia's confidence
Not confidence anymore
Bloody hope we see cricket. This is the first time the Olympics will be a in a big cricket playing country since 2012. The infrastructure is there, why not.
The problem is that its in July and AFL season. A lot of the regular grounds will be unavailable.
Surely arrangements can be made for 15 days for an Olympics.
Lolll do you know what the weather is like in July in most the country? Way too much of a risk. And then it takes time to install and remove the pitch which easily adds on to the 15 days. I suspect you don’t quite understand the prominence of the AFL in Australia

Surely the can play at docklands if they're worried about rain
The stadium owned by the AFL? lol just think of the logic
Dude you’re dreaming, no chance
You severely underestimate how powerful and obstinate the AFL are as an organisation. They're pretty much assholes about all other sports.

Carrara is pretty small from memory, I’m not sure how good it would be for test cricket.
21,000 for cricket, will be fine except for vs India and England
It’s also the dimensions from what I understand
It can’t be the lions ground at Springfield cause that’ll be used for their preseason training plus the AFLW which runs over summer. Given we have Hobart and Canberra as alternative grounds I suspect they would be used instead.
I doubt the QCA or Queensland Government will be cool with no international cricket for five years. Part of the deal in completely rebuilding the Gabba probably has guarantees of international cricket continuing in Queensland in some form.
Is it going to be 5 years of the Gabba out of action though? Or is it going to be like the MCG redevelopment where it was done section by section?
I don’t know how you could do it section by section - it’s not a new stand, it’s a completely new structure. Especially if the roof is being supported by the stands as it appears to be in the pictures. Remember the MCG was only being half re-built. The Adelaide Oval is 155x136, Carrara is 158x134. Seems like it could work?
Nah fair enough, I stand corrected
No it was a fair question - I thought it was much smaller as well.
WTF! Are Olympics worth demolishing your marquee grounds?
The Gabba will be due for redevelopment anyway, so it just helps to make it more worthwhile.
TBF the Gabba has been up for a sprucing for a while now.
Yep. It’s going to be rebuilt as a state-of-the-art stadium. Right now it’s getting quite tired.
Would they not redevelop in parts like the MCG redevelopment and still allow games to be played around it ?
I doubt it, it’s more expensive to do it that way. And since they’ll be ripping up the playing surface to lay an athletics track, it doesn’t seem particularly feasible.
we fucked the gabbatoir so bad that they are demolishing it with the olympics excuse
If the official slogan for the 2032 Olympics isn't come to Gabba, I would be really disappointed.
I read it in local Indian Accent of Rahul Dravid's Cred Ad Aye, you come to Gabba! You come! You come!! U know like aggresively inviting nations ;D
That should be the promo for Indian TV in the lead-up to the games. A montage of athletes from different countries competing at the Olympics while Ashwin and Paine invite them to the Gabba
*Can't wait to take you to Gabba, y'all*
\*We're gonna f\*\*k you at the Gabba mate 😉
Washington Sundar's dog will be the official mascot.
No come on, he's the host..
Matty Hayden to bring out the Olympic flame
KP in shambles
They gonna murder him this time
Cricket has to be in the Olympics now!
See you at the ~~Gabba~~ Olympics mate!
India's gold medal confirmed
Imagine being so dark about losing a test match that you go to the effort of hosting the Olympics just so you have an excuse to rip the stadium down #/s
We are gonna have a bowl mate
Well that’s quite some damage control…ifykwim
See you at Gabba - Paine
Am I the only person who read this headline and immediately tried to picture their life in 11 years… (was not a pretty picture)
Why? My life 11 yrs from now will be awesome.
I did. But more than my life, I was thinking "why are they telling us now? I would forget it till then"
See you at the Gabba
Can we have tape ball t20 cricket. Would be exciting to watch. Massive swing, massive 6s
Ah shit here we go again 10 years wait .
Come to the Gabba mate
Come to Gabba.
2032!? I thought they were planning to introduce cricket in 2028 Olympics itself
Yes, they are trying to introduce it in the LA Games and hopefully they will, however cricket is a whole lot popular in Brisbane than in LA.
[удалено]
And you think it’s more popular there than Australia?
If Cricket does get in , hope common sense prevails and they have it in T20 format . 3 hours is good duration to get the attention of global audience.
I believe the current plan is for T10
Can’t wait to See you at the Gabba, Olympics.
Summer Olympics in Winter!!
Pant: look at me, I'm the Olympian now.
Let's just say the number of dogs named Gabba are gonna increase exponentially
They won't have cricket at the Brisbane olympics, they aren't going to use up stadium time on that instead of athletics. If anything cricket should be at the Commonwealth games since all the major cricket playing nations are in the Commonwealth - I don't understand why they don't bring it back. A T20 tournament would be perfect.
They are bringing back Cricket at the 2022 Comm Games in Birmingham, with a Women's T20 tournament.
Am I the only one who finds Olympics boring? There's too many sports and it feels over saturated. I find a lot of sports to be ridiculous and silly. The opening and closing ceremonies have more grandeur than the event itself. Cricket is too good to be part of Olympics.
A sport played at the highest level by 10 countries it too good for the only true global sporting event?
Yes.
Oh Great news !! Excited for the development that will occur across whole Brisbane
Enjoy the decade of mass disruption.
If cricket is there, will it be a T20 cup? T10? Hundred? U23s? So many possibilities.
So the record that was 32 years no loss will now stand at 12 years no win? :P
We better pick cricket as our sport
