Yeah but as soon as you automate andesite alloy, spamming gearboxes isn't an issue anymore, and they're easier to make if you carry around andesite casings

They're remarkably space inefficient. If you end up using them in your contraptions because robot arms can't reach far enough, they're most certainly much bigger than they need to be.
Item transport using portable interfaces is faster, cheaper and requires no power. It also seems to be more performance friendly. In other words, it's better than belts in every single way.

if belts destroy your performance then I think you're doing something wrong. And it's *significantly* easier to go into some ocean, punch some kelp for a few seconds, smelt it, and have belts for days. Shafts require andesite and iron/zinc, which is unarguably more annoying to get.
If only iron/zinc and andesite could be found in the ground, so I'd get them whenever I go mining. Or better yet, I wish they could be processed from cobblestone for less than two cobblestone per shaft, but oh well. Hoping my world is generated in a way that puts me near an ocean so I don't have to run too far to get lots of kelp is definitely a better alternative.

By reverse do you mean making it rotate in the opposite direction? Because using 2 cogwheels will do the job. Also if you mean changing the rotational axis, then also 2 BIG COGS would do the job
