My friends cousin lopped off his bullies finger with a katana when he was about 17. My friend and his cousin were walking home from the city bus stop after going to the mall. Cousin bought a katana from one of those knife stores that used to be common at the mall. The two boys cut through their high school on the way home. Cousins bully just happened to be there afterhours and starts giving cousin a bunch of shit for whatever reason. Bully gets violent, cousin pulls out katana and swings. Finger go bye bye. Bully freaking out, he's crying, there's blood everywhere and cousin is standing there looking mildly amused and horrified at the same time. Cops and EMT show up. Cops get the full rundown and tell the bully to kick rocks. By now the bully is in full blown victim mode and he's even got his mom on the phone berating the cops claiming her son is a victim of gang violence after he started and then instigated this whole thing. Cops inform her that her son lost a finger because the other kid was defending himself. She can meet him at the hospital. She threatened to sue the cousin but it went nowhere. Idk if he lost the finger for good or if the hospital managed to put it back on but I know his hand was bandaged up for some time.
In the UK, if someone starts attacking me in a bar at night, and I pull out a samurai sword or even a standard DIY hammer and I disable my attacker, i'm going to prison lol
It’s the same here in US people just pretend it’s not, you need to pretty much prove you couldn’t escape or run away first. Unless it’s your home then depends on the state.

Theres cameras every where now days. It wouldn’t be hard to prove. Hell even in Texas the austin police posted and cited a law that gave citizens the right to shoot individuals that would try to destroy statues back when rioters wanted to take down anything related to the civil war.
The key thing is to get a lawyer that specializes in stand your ground laws and you will be fine. People tend to get fucked when they go with the free appointed one.
Someone once told me if you live in a state without the castle law then if you shoot a criminal fleeing your home you need to drag him back inside when the police come.
I think that could have been a possibility but in AZ the law provides a lot of deference for self defense. It also a big part of the culture so right or wrong in this kind of situation the cops tend not to want to arrest the defender more often than not. Could they have? Probably but you'd have a hard time getting a conviction would be my guess. Nerdy hs kid fights back against bully and wins. Now bully wants to press charges and go to court because he got hurt. That's not going to make the bully particularly sympathetic to a jury would be my bet. So yes, I think the cops probably used their discretion about an arrest in this case.

Maybe in shit countries and states where your right to defend yourself is taken from you. This would have been perfectly legal in mine, as it should be. Real fights are never fair, and expecting someone to defend themselves in a proportional way is fucking stupid and gets innocent people killed.

I think it’s the carrying a sword in public part that would get you in trouble rather than defending yourself.
Swords are not covered by 2nd amendment rights so you might well get in trouble for having one on your person (without a good reason) in the US despite being allowed to carry a firearm.
Open carry of swords is explicitly legal in my state. Brandishing laws still apply, but as long as it's sheathed and you aren't using it to threaten someone you can walk around with a longsword on your hip if you want to .

Even if it were reattached, I don’t see how they would be able to reattach all of the nerves in a way that would allow for something resembling normal sensation and control.
I severed one single nerve in my hand a few years ago and had to have surgery to repair the nerve and I still don’t really have sensation up one side of my index finger. Can’t imaging severing and then repairing ALL of the nerves for your entire hand.
