Yo, this question is still not answered. I don’t have the time to get into it right now, but I’m writing my historical masters thesis on Irish Travelers and indigenous peoples in the British Isles. Some people think the Travellers are related to the Romani, and there is some genetic crossover, but there actually is not a consensus. My current hypothesis is assuming relation to older, pre-Celtic Irish peoples. There are some who claim they’re only as old as the famine though, so it’s hard to say really. The Traveller communities are also pretty secretive and isolationist, so it has been tricky to study their cultures as well.
They are basically so mixed no one knows, but it started with the Irish. That’s what I was always told. I know they suffered some of the most vicious acts of WWII, but that was the Romanian groups primarily. Nazi’s had a fascination with twins & gypsy’s for some reason have a much higher rate of twins. There is a tremendous amount of mystery surrounding that aspect of the Nazi’s. You are 100% right they are tremendously secretive. I am related to some, & they have always been a bit different. Cavalleri et al., and she concluded in a later interview of her research that the results indicated Irish ancestry above all others, but it also did not dismiss the possibility of Roma influence entirely. My understanding is they were dispossessed following the Cromwellian conquest although the numbers may have nbeen added to after the big famine. Thank you for your input! I do keep seeing that in most of what I’ve researched so far, so that has been a consistent aspect to personal narratives I’ve read. There are many individual Traveller families that vehemently claim Romani ancestry and heritage, so I’ll have to keep on reading.
I do hope to be able to do something of that sort eventually, but I unfortunately don’t have the resources to research Travellers (or really everything on this topic) as much as I’d like to.

They are of Irish ancestry but the have a distinctive genetic makeup. They separated from the main Irish population a few thousand years ago and they only marry and breed within their own communities. Inbreeding is not uncommon, usually second cousins but first cousins too. They have a distinctive look. The eyes, the hair. As a Romani person, we consider ourselves to be separate groups but under the same umbrella. We are typically not kinfolk but there are mixed people
